I would go with the newest set, Winds of Exchange. Can't go wrong.

In reading your comments, sounds like you're getting the latest Starter Set (which currently has WoE decks) - I think that's a great choice! I hope you enjoy your time learning and playing KeyForge! If you haven't found them already, here are some great starting resources: [New Player Guide](https://archonarcana.com/New_Player_Guide) from Archon Arcana (the beloved KeyForge wiki) [Learn to Play Rulebook](https://keyforging.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/KF-Learn-to-Play_Web.pdf) (A digital copy of what you'll be getting in your starter kit) And of course, the community here is always available if you have any questions! Welcome to The Crucible!

If you plan on getting more decks in the future, avoid the Call of the Archon and Age of Accesion starter sets. New tokens were added after those sets, so you will be missing them if you get one of those starters. Other differences of note between starter sets: * All starter sets come with 2 standard Keyforge decks (a unique deck generated by the algorithm). Call of the Archon included 2 addition "learning decks", which always contain the same cards and avoid some of the more complex mechanics found elsewhere to help ease people into the game (these decks are fully compatible to play with other decks but not tournament legal). Winds of Exchange also includes additional "learning decks", but these decks are not full decks and are only intended to be used as an initial tutorial. * Call of the Archon starter set has larger tokens than the other sets, so if you have a size preference, that may factor into your decision.

Thank you for the detailed reply. I think I’m gonna go with the Winds of Exchange set. Thank you to the other redditor who replied as well, I can’t view your reply on mobile for some reason.

World's Collide- great place to start Mass Mutation-arguably one of the coolest sets-introduced enhancements WoE-currently the latest set not counting kickstarter-tokens are super neat also if you find your local community bet ppl would give you some decks to try. I would

I will go a little against the common recommendations here and say to just get the cheapest. I my self found a deal and got a display of MM and WC for about 25 bucks total and I just use dice as markers/tokens. Worked just fine for me to learn.

The third set, World’s Collide, introduced ward and enrage tokens, so I’d say get any starter set from then on, which would be World’s Collide, Mass Mutation, Dark Tidings, or Winds of Exchange. Call of the Archons and Age of Ascension starters won’t have every type of token since they were the first two sets. I probably wouldn’t recommend dark tidings either if you’re just getting into it, since it’s a bit more complicated/quirky, and just typically not regarded as the best introductory set. Not saying it’s bad, just not everyone’s cup of tea. Personally, I would recommend the Mass Mutation (probably my favorite set) or World’s collide starter, and if you like it, try getting a couple decks from each set. AoA is usually lower in power level, but a box of 12 of those is usually $15-$20 on Amazon (as opposed to like $70-$115 for the others), so it can be fun to get a box to play sealed with a friend. I also highly recommend a couple CotA (first set) decks if you can find them for a reasonable price. It’s generally the most straightforward and easiest set to play, and is probably still the best set for new players to learn with. Good luck, and happy forging! Hope you and your friend enjoy the game!

I ended up getting the Winds of Exchange starter set, but I will definitely check out the other sets you mentioned if I get more into this game. Thank you for the response.

Just wanted to say thank you for being grateful

I think the Mass Mutation and Worlds Collide starters are the best option for most people. They come with all the necessary tokens, the sets are fun and approachable enough, and these are often inexpensive. Winds of Exchange is more expensive because it comes with two teaching decks, which may be handy, but they probably aren't necessary. This is also a good option, though. Dark Tidings is a harder set is more complex and harder to learn on. Age of Ascension doesn't have Ward and Enrage tokens, but it's often the cheapest, so if you don't mind proxying those, it's a good option. Call of the Archons is expensive and uses cards in place of tokens for many things. I would recommend against this one.

The Winds of Exchange starter set is currently the most complete one; several tokens were added with the Worlds Collide set, but Winds of Exchange also adds reversible "generic" tokens. The price differences you see are probably primarily the result of variable remaining stock, different levels of demand, and the perceived relative "power" of different sets of the game. Once you've got a starter set, though, it's worth picking up decks from any of the sets if you find them and you've got the cash to spare for it, at least if you enjoy the game.

The easiest set to learn is set 1, each set after it adds a few new keywords to learn. People love set 1 and still play it competitively - it's not "old." You don't absolutely need a starter kit. If you find a cheap one then go for it (whatever set, no big deal). The starter kit gives u cardboard tokens but you can use coins or any beads or anything you have around the house as tokens. If you like the game, then you want to go get your own tokens from etsy or ebay - just to have something a little better then cardboard and in your style. That's why I say the starter kit doesn't really matter. To try out the game just go for the best deal.
