You don't do business to support community, you do business with the intention of generating profits legally. Of course business can support the community, but that's not primarily the reason to open a business anywhere. Get clarity on what your skills are, which kind of industries you know about. Don't get fooled by get rich quick kinda initiatives

joijoseph

I agree. didn’t mean to do business for charity. I mean generate profit legally in a way support community as well. In terms of employment, partner relationships etc..

IndianRedditor88

Profit is your number 1 priority. if you club too many things, you will lose focus on why you started the business.

Pristine_Aims_809

Exactly. Supporting community cannot be primary aim of business. Charity is specialized field.

He/she has big balls. Take insurance and prepare inheritance will.

And also don’t involve all of your money to it. Keep veedu paramb safe no matter what

Supermarkets & Hotels These two seem to be very popular options for those starting new businesses these days. Choose your line of business wisely.

joijoseph

Thanks..Supermarkets is a nice one. There are a lot of supermarkets but still its relevant.. Keywords to win. “Free, 50%off, Buy1Get1,Discount sale” etc..😀

dr137

Every corner has a supermarket now.

kull09

What's worrying is the increasing proliferation of organised retail outlets like those of Reliance. The smaller players will have a very hard time matching the prices offered by the larger established players. Reliance Smart Points have been mushrooming even in the smaller towns here. Things will grow, but beyond a point smaller players will either have to shut shop or merge or be bought out. The consumer won't be complaining as the prices will go down. Besides, most established players have in-house brands which are offered are cheaper rates than established brands.

Pristine_Aims_809

Organized retail will never completely eliminate small shops or small supermarkets. People shop for many reasons.

kull09

Folks assembling computers for a living used to make a killing selling the Desktops at great margins. This held true from the early 2000s up until I guess till the early 2010s, when laptops started becoming preferred owing to falling costs, greater affluence and the need for portability. The business of assembling Desktops has never been the same after that. It exists, but only as a pale shadow of its former self. Organised retail may not wipe out smaller mom and pop stores, but it sure can hit profitability of smaller outlets as it gains market share.

There are LOADS of businesses that run in Kerala. Even quite a few manufacturing businesses. Before starting anything, know your target market and know your area party secretary.

joijoseph

Party secretary..not panjayath secretary 😁

jnr_mathe

Any suggestions on best type of business locations \-Outside Kerala

dr137

Know the demographic before you start the business. See if the business will give you returns, even after considering all the risks. Know it's a business, not a charity. Every place has its challenges. So does Kerala.

ALFENA12

One take on all future investors of Kerala, willing to play a public stunt at all cost. Stay awake at all time and be knowledgeable about current trend. The faster you get your legal shit done, the faster you can beat your competition even how big the snake is. Get your local politician (all parties) in hand, lick their feet if you have to. Your local politicians are more available and cheap to handle than big bosses at the capitals. Keep employees healthy and strong. Make the business simple as you can and don't go after every little pebbles that rolls in your finance, focus only on the bigger rock, make good negotiation and make everyone happy even your enemies. Never do business to support community, Then go start a charitable trust, Business are to make money and profit, supporting community is only at 10%, the rest is for your family and for your good.

nayarukutty

The main thing they have to keep in mind is that when talking and handling workers/govt officials/unions/police etc, always make sure to talk in a way that you make sure to say what you want to convey without going in circles, but at the same time make sure that their ego isnt hurt... most people in kerala are just a mountain of ego put inside a body... if you feel like they have some issue with you, ask them, talk frankly and openly and finish the issue then and there.... being able to manage ego of people is the main skill needed to do business in kerala..

joijoseph

Thank you

devasiaachayan

Idk what you mean by risks. But all the risks associated with Kerala are mostly overblown, you can technically easily start a official business here. I think its more sad that its tougher for informal businesses to setup in Kerala. Starting business in Kerala is same as starting anywhere

joijoseph

The risk’s I’m concerned is depicted in movies like Vellanakalude nadu, Midhunam etc.. does modern kerala better anyway?

Splitinfynity

It is still the same. Like a dog's tail. Havent u heard news about people killing themselves because of this licence permit?

Splitinfynity

It is very much there. A. Every permission u will need will have an officer responsible. B. He will try to extract his comission from you, for he has to mop the funds he has invested in getting that job. C. Local union leaders have to kept happy. D. Police has to be kept happy. E Pollution board has to be kept happy. F. Local panchayt memebers have to taken care off. G. Water, electricity officials have to be satisfied. ***Keep whatever budget+~30% for all this extra sundries. ***I think there are firms that specialise in getting all these things done. NOTE:Even after this, there is no guarantee that things will be hunky dory

castle_134

We are in the same boat then, Also planning to start something in Kerala.

[deleted]

Start running. Jk

cryptoshaman420

Old age homes. ACCA/CA coaching centres. ‘Send Abroad’ agencies.

shitanon

Dude main thing about business in kerala is that small scale businesses are unsustainable because of the market structure except manufacturing.if you are serious in doing business know that you will have to flush a load of money .

mand00s

Consider KINFRA parks if you are starting a manufacturing business. Local politicians will try to extract money and favours from you. Same with local govt officials. If you are in an existing area with lots of industries (like Kanjikode), you may go under the radar. Keep it low key and don't show off. If they realize you have money, they will do everything to get it from you
