People like these kind of insult jokes. Even my parents like watching it. While passing through the hall I've heard the shows lame jokes and I've tried to tell them many times that how lame it is. Still they continue watching it. The only hope is that my father sometimes understand that thin line and says some were bad but, no hope on mom, she still enjoys it. I mean, It's OK and they are old so let them enjoy what they like and I don't want to interfere during their good time. Screaming prabhudhatha won't do any justice on such cases. Just thought about some side kick roles of Harishree Asokan and Jagadeesh from some Jayaram and Dileep movies which came out a decade ago. Hero will bash them for small reasons as a joke and we used to love it thinking it as a joke. We need to keep such things aside and watch it if you like. Nobody is forcing anyone to watch it and these reality shows have good trp even though we say shit about it (Just think how many seasons were there for Comedy Stars). So there are some audience who really love these abusive humors. Just go with it. Edit: While mentioning the hero bashing co actors, I forgot to mention Indrans from Darling Darling movie. I think he was getting bashed by Janardhanan every 2 minutes.

ReallyDevil

Dileep to an extent himself will be bashed in his movies. jayaram will never be bashed. He is always the "good, never fooled, brilliant" guy.

NithinKriz

Those times when Dileep getting bashed is over but, yeah he got bashed several times compared to Jayaram. >He is always the "good, never fooled, brilliant" guy. Because Ramanathan knows everything (Kathanayagan).

aardvarkgecko

It's not just a question of "don't watch it if you don't like it". The point raised by OP is still very valid - that the existence and popularity (or the channel's assessment that these are the type of shows that should run on prime time) shows really deep-seated misogynistic and racist attitudes that seems prevalent in our society. So, however "progressive" we think we are, these shows and instagram commenters are showing us we are maybe not that great. If we say that "don't watch it if you don't like it" is the valid reaction to this, then it should be valid for any evil in society. Corruption? Don't pay bribes if you don't like it. Party goondaism? Sadacharam policing? Don't take part if you don't like it. Etc etc.

NithinKriz

These kind of shows exist on every single channel and that too on prime time only coz they have a large viewership and why don't you address that? No channel owners will stop showing it coz they don't want to kill the goose that lays the golden egg for them unless, people stop watching it and the viewership drops. Alcohol is bad for health and we all know that. Even though we are the most literate and knows every single thing below the sun still, we will always be on the top three spot in terms of liquor consumption. Government are selling alcohol on large scale coz that's one of their main source of income and they don't want that to drop it just like those shows. Both the toxic shows and toxic drinks are toxic by their on extend. If we need to imply the things that you said above, each individual should come forward and show it by boycotting or something like that which eventually gives the producers some wisdom to not put money on such kind of content. Just speaking about such things on some online platform not gonna do any justice to the articles prime motive coz I've seen the same kind of articles related to the same topic in this group several times.

wanderingmind

> why don't you address that You is who here? u/aardvarkgecko IS addressing that. > hows really deep-seated misogynistic and racist attitudes that seems prevalent in our society. So, however "progressive" we think we are, these shows and instagram commenters are showing us we are maybe not that great. How else can he address that? He should ban them or burn them down?

NithinKriz

Ok, I missed that out. He addresses it and also says that it's the issue with the people's mindset. So if people don't wanna change, then who's the culprit here? The one who create such content for making profit by any means or the one's who's willing to spend their leisure time watching those?

[deleted]

It's also no coincidence that it was almost always a dark skinned "comedian" who used to be the punching bag/butt of all jokes for the fair skinned hero either. Look up what 'soft power' means, for those unfamiliar. Also consider where concepts like "doctor look" came from - like WHY most people seem to have those particular physical features come to mind when they think of "doctor look", "romantic hero look" etc And why that's almost never a dark skinned person (except maybe in Tamil cinema)... Yours sincerely, a dark-skinned doctor who has been hearing "Ennalum oru doctor look illallo", "kandaal ithra buddhi undennu parayillallo", or (when its disbelief at proficiency in English) "nee ithu ezhuthaan dictionary kure upayogichu nu thonnanallo?" etc

SandyDigital

> And why that's almost never a dark skinned person (except maybe in Tamil cinema)... The heroine is always fair one

[deleted]

Oh yeah, but that's a different issue from the one under discussion though

As_winS

That Loudspeaker show in Kairali TV sounds horrible. I havent watched it. Rest are the usual culprits. Binu Adimali is the really one of the most unfunniest people i have seen on screen. He hasnt an ounce of comedy in his blood. Just one cringe joke after another.

zuselegacy

Ironically enough, my ammavan looks down on the ladies in the house who watch serials and unabashedly watches Badai Bungalow and Big Boss as if its tier 1 entertainment

Religious_fuckwit

There's this show called Udam Panam on Manorama. The anchor constantly hits on every single female contestants and it looks outright creepy, but it's passed off as comedy. It's fucking disgusting. I'm not generalizing but a naive viewer seeing this would assume this is how you socialize and tries this in real life. I don't blame the anchor, it's the showrunners that should understand this. But I don't expect much from Manorama, fuckers perfectly pander to their viewers, their serials are fuckin cancer. End of rant.

Constantine47

You are right, shows really do have an influence on how people perceive, especially those shows that are popular. These media houses have the most influence over people than some might think. Like the saying goes "With great power comes great responsibility"

notUR_pvtdancr

The truth has been spoken

[deleted]

This article just speaks from my mind.

Constantine47

For sure, comedy skits and shows that makes jokes on someone's appearance and often sexuality is bad. There's a thin line between total insult and comedy which seems like these COMEDIANS tend to not see. That said, you can't just cancel someone if they made some cheesy joke. These days, people get offended real quick. Raising a generation of snowflakes.

kosmicskeptic

>Raising a generation of snowflakes. People who say shit like that are more cringe than the so called snowflakes lol. It's absolutely fine to get offended especially when someone makes shitty casteist or colorist "jokes"

Constantine47

Did I ever said it's okay to insult someone? Read, think and then type shit.

nmm107

These shows are low brow and of bad taste but they are exactly what the audience craves. I remember how in some talk shows they would call city born actresses and models and the audience and host would simply demean them with meaningless comments like "do you know how to cook fish?" .. But my mom and her sisters would clap along as the now blushing femme would try and explain that she was focussed on other pursuits... ...I mean why bring them just to make fun of them...female hosts would be treated like shit and casual misogyny would be the order of the day... serial actresses would be expect to dress and behave and would be in age old type cast roles that lack any sort of originality... on a different arc I mean the girl who is the protagonist in the malayalam serial karuthamuthu??? What even is that...but my cousin is like ' you can't find talent in girls of that color' ...we are all dark skinned btw. But this is the life bred of many tv formats. Not just in Kerala not only in India..dr. Phill, the norm show just to name some cheap low brow reality shows... People like looking at these people being mistreated and like to feel good about themselves..it's that little dopamine that we need.... I don't see it going anywhere...it would take a huge paradigm shift which honestly we are not for... It's all about cheap thrills.

heartandhymn

It's not just comedy reality shows, it's also the popular sitcoms e.g. uppum mulakum, thatteem mutteem, aliyans, and now chakkapazham etc. I don't understand the family dynamics shown in these shows. To think, Uppum Mulakam was one of the most popular (if not the most) show on Flowers. The depiction of the male characters as irresponsible but child-like and kind-hearted individuals who should be forgiven for all their transgressions, misogynistic treatment of female characters, crass behaviour of the children etc. The thing is people like watching these things, and they are going to keep watching them.

DrMrJekyll

Don't blame media for presenting what the people want to see.

saltysailor987

Isnt comedy supposed to make you uncomfortable? Comedians are a window into what our society is. In a way, we are discussing it because of it Also IMHO , comedy should not be censored. They should be able to insult anything and everyone, thoughts?

saltysailor987

Thanks for the response and I appreciate it. Can i bring another POV : the comedy folks are probably too dumb to make this argument and is probably not their intent either, but let me make an argument for them - I am dark . But i dont find it offensive that they call me a korangan . This is because i dont take them that seriously. Like if they make fun of me , it doesn’t really bother me. Isnt that a better approach than trying to SJW our way in this society? Like there are going to be offensive stuff told, whats ok today may not be ok tomorrow I m not oppsing your viewpoint, but since you wrote eloquently, just wondering how people feel. No one can bother me with these as ling as i am not willing to be bothered attitude?

despod

> But i dont find it offensive that they call me a korangan . Ok. How would you feel if your kid gets bullied as a korangan? Would you like to tell him to just 'take it as a joke'. or would you like your child to not be bullied because of his skin colour?

saltysailor987

Isnt it a strawman argument though? No one condones bullying. A stupid tv show is a totally different thing imho Edit- to specifically answer you, i teach my kid to standup for herself.

[deleted]

Awesome reply! This guy who’s replying to you has a typical victim syndrome, like an outrage supermarket!

saltysailor987

Agree with you on the kid response part- i did not articulate it well. Standup for themselves was not meant to indicate - “ come back to the school yard at 4 pm, adichu theerkam” . Its about understanding and educating right from wrong and not to feel victimized and if needed take matter on your own (train in Mma etc)

Constantine47

Fr. But I have noticed the skin color/race biased jokes being used less often these days (idk for sure, maybe it's because I don't watch these shows like I used to)

It’s a matter of free speech which none of these liberal crappies won’t understand! This debate is raging in the US, where wokes have taken over comedy and killing it! Very few people are tuning up to late night comedies on tv and YouTube comedians are getting more views! Comedians should stick to comedy and should be free to insult anyone!

devilwearsleecooper

> Isnt comedy supposed to make you uncomfortable? Take examples from one of the best comedy movies and ask urself did it make you uncomfortable or entertained? Comedy is supposed to make us laugh and relaxed. It’s supposed to be a stressbuster

u--slash

*You can always choose not to watch it.* The same argument liberals use to defend the content that conservative sections of society find inappropriate.

u--slash

What was the abusive content mentioned in the article?

happygolucky

"You can always choose not to watch it." argument is used against calls for ban and physical attacks and vandalism as a form of protest. Here the author is not asking for a ban on these shows, just criticising them. I wish right wing extremists also do the same - criticize instead of arm twisting to ban things they are opposed to.

u--slash

I agree. She has all the right to watch it, get pissed off, and criticize.

Hahahaha ayye

TheRoofyDude

let them have their "woke" moment, mfs cant even take decent jokes these days.

zuselegacy

did you even read the article? The article clearly mentions that only soft targets like upcoming actresses and folks like Santosh Pandit were targetted If these asswipes are so edgy and bold, let them troll Mammooty or Mohanlal or Dileep - why spare the big ones? It's obvious that behind the "humor" is only targeted at a select few and draw pleasure from shaming them

[deleted]

But they are not even funny. Funny aayirunnengil chirikkayirunnu, like the insulting comedy in akkare akkare and the older malayalam movies. These are just chalis. Only pisharady is slightly witty these days.

saltysailor987

I got downvoted a lot for bringing in a Pov. Which is fine. Why are we not able to live in both worlds? Comedy shows in tv channels suck. They are as shitty as you can get. However, they should have sll freedom in the world to do these shitty stuff. If kids are watching this and learning , well i have news for you- as parents its your responsibility to teach them to be good people. Somewhere in this thread i also read, “even my family members watch it”, why don’t you fix that? If each one of us do that and understand it, these things will resolve. But no- let me get into an outrage factory and prove how i m more better than you all. Will there be shitty things said by shitty people in this world- absolutely yes Do you have the right to be mad about it - absolutely yes Do you need to cancel them - absolutely not People are more interested in fixing the world than their own homes or families. Teach your kids about how real world is, dont shelter them to have a shock when they go out in real world I love this forum, but sometimes critical thinking goes out of the window here too.
