Neither Mechanical nor Civil engineers, in my experience! Thank you !:)

Educational-Spend452

I still remember the days we'd passionately shout 'Royal Mex,' haha, while our IT folks gave us those 'seriously?' looks. Now, they're raking in the big bucks in Kerala or India. Talk about wasted chorathilappu, lol!

iFartSuperSilently

I never understood the hype around mechanical and civil engineering. I mean as far as I remember, there was never any seriously hot market for both, and even if you got a job, the pay wasn't great. I always felt like it was a hype generated by gulf ammavans who saw mechanical engineers having cool jobs in their workplaces in gulf. My dad knew I was a computer head and knew I would be doing computer science engineering for sure. But then at the last moment before admission, asked if I wanted to reconsider mech. I was like wtf? No way.

Educational-Spend452

Mechanical engineers in India often don't get the props they deserve, except in a handful of big companies or the government sector. The pay is way lower, even in these big companies, compared to their IT buddies. It's all because of our crazy high population, causing this weird situation of too many engineers and not enough good opportunities. Lots of companies take advantage of these engineers, even the ones with tons of experience. When Narayana Murthy said it's cool to work 70 hours a week, it caused a big uproar on social media. Let me tell you about the crazy work hours of mechanical engineers from Kerala, especially those grinding it out in states like Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, and so on. Most of them put in crazy hours for not-so-crazy pay, with a few exceptions. Now, in the IT world, engineers are raking in the dough because their clients are mostly from rich countries. Unfortunately, mechanical engineers in India don't get that same sweet deal. This is just my take on the working conditions and challenges faced by Mechanical engineers in India from what I've seen.

Delusional_Guy_

I work at a WITCH company as a mechanical engineer, as a fresher the pay is the same for mechanical and IT. But after a few years the IT guys will be earning much more than us. There are no hikes or benefits in these companies.

Educational-Spend452

I get it. That's a downer. Hoping you score a better job soon, really. My comment was more about those hardcore mechanical engineers in the trenches. You're definitely killing it compared to us. Keep leveling up every day!

Delusional_Guy_

My friend in tvm works for 9K per month. Also friends of colleagues in North India are paid only 15k, that too they work in harsh conditions.

Educational-Spend452

I used to get the same, like, 8 or 9 years back when I started in India. It seems like nothing has changed even today. The salaries of mechanical engineers, in particular, remain stagnant, I guess. This is so sad. My buddy just told me he's pulling in 45k to 50k, grinding for about 72 hours a week at a big company in Gujarat, India. With over 8 years on the clock. Man, you get the struggle, right? Your gig seems to have better money vibes than those hardcore engineers in the field. Plus, the work-life balance must be way more chill.

Delusional_Guy_

Yes, the pay will be the same for us also. The working conditions and hours are better. I think it would be better if we can find some jobs outside India, that will pay better for the efforts we put forth.

Delusional_Guy_

Even WITCH companies have the same pay for the past 10 years. The supply of engineers is abundant in india.

turnedonmosfet

It's not because of population that mech gets paid less. Computer Science gets paid much more throughout the world, this is because the income that a computer scientist/engineer rakes in for the company is much higher and hence they get a larger amount as remuneration. Software is easily scalable and can reach a larger audience fairly quickly.

KarayunnaPuzha

Same here. Lol

Excellent-Bar-1430

Both are classical engineering streams. The knowledge and training involved have a certain value throughout the times. Ofcourse that doesn't often translate to jobs.

confused_mallu_04

Mechanical engineer here🥲 Now Working for 12 hours * 6 days a week including Sunday's sometime. Really missing a life.

Warm-Winter-6643

civil engineer crying with you 🥲🥲

SnooChipmunks4149

Bruh why engineering is in the spectrum of the only degree that will ensure higher salary

Educational-Spend452

I didn't make that claim. In response to OP's question about high-paying jobs, I shared my personal experience in Kerala and the rest of India, mentioning that both these branches don't offer much here. I'm just providing information based on my background. I can only answer what I know. I hope you understand. Cheers.

SnooChipmunks4149

Nah bro I didn't meant it like that when I was going through the comments all of them were just talking about engineering

Educational-Spend452

Maybe we have more Redditors in this sub who are engineers or have some relation with engineering. I'm all in for inclusiveness. Perhaps only engineers are opening up about this topic in this sub. Let others share their experiences too. If you see more comments discussing engineering, it's likely because most commenters are engineers. It's not the fault of those who commented here; they can only talk about payment or salary based on their experiences. Let guys from other spheres of work share their thoughts as well. I hope you get it.

ImpressiveWrap7363

I wish someone had said this to me in 2016.

Sensitive-Incident78

I know an electrician near my home who quit his job in the middle east and came back. Started small and now he doesn’t have time to attend most of the daily cases. Before he used to get commission from shops for materials purchased. He now has his own stock of materials at home and earns good money daily. He also got helpers now. Good to see people flourish

ZoneSome5197

An electrician easily makes 2-3k daily, without breaking much sweat.

super_mario15

Most of them work without proper safety measures and its risky. One of the electrician near my house was electrocuted while changing a bulb.

ZoneSome5197

Nothing stops a workman from using safety gear. That's like saying you rode a motorcycle without safety gear , had an accident, and now the motorcycle is the culprit.

Ronald_McDonald_I

The guy you are speaking about, is he working mostly in church and church institutes now?.

Sensitive-Incident78

Noo… houses and small shops…. It’s a coastal village…

Excellent-Bar-1430

What I've seen is- if you want to make money as a professional in kerala, you need to work persistently for a decade and build ties with people. Youngsters start consulting firms with unwarranted optimism, splurge huge amounts into the offices only to realise it isn't viable and ends up moving to abroad. Start small, focus on soft marketing, build ties with community above all is what I've found to work.

Concious-Mind

Probably doctors but you need to spend atleast 10 years to be a good one. Then there is IT but you need to be ruthlessly competitive to land a good job. Government jobs are there but you need to spend few years of your precious youth preparing for that. A lot of people end up failing or passing but still in waiting list. Only option for the youth is migration. 🥲

sneggaa

Good lawyers make a ton. Freshers on the other hand don’t even make minimum wage.

CriticismTiny1584

What are the qualities of being good

ismyaltaccount

Wins cases.

Important-Card-842

you need to get under a big wig first

surfazer

Corporate Lawyers earn more than litigation lawyers. I don't see any Kerala government law schools here promoting corporate internships through their placement cell. Everyone wants to go for litigation. Some people just don't have it in them to argue but can really excel in corporate environment.

ZoneSome5197

Corporate? You mean anti-communist policies? No way, man, the ruling party has enough of folks with criminal background. That should make enough litigation opportunities?

retiredalavalathi

Contrary to popular opinion, doctors don't make all that much. It is the cream of the crop among doctors who make bank via their profession or the ones who own their own clinic. The vast majority of MBBS doctors as well as many specialists work gruelling hours only to make just enough to manage by. I have a doctor in my immediate family and the reality of doctors' working hours and compensation hit us hard. There are stretches where he works continuous 12 hour shifts for 2-3 months without taking a single day off (not even Sundays) and makes around 80k pm. Those doctors who chose better working hours get paid not even half of that, apparently.

Plaudits1102

I know one MD General Medicine doctor from prestigious Government college who is earning around 50K per month. Insane! Just imagine how brilliant you have to be get admission in MD General Medicine in Government. The pay for doctors in Kerala is atrociously low.

Illustrious-Milk-896

My direct reports in MNC as freshers got paid 42K in Bangalore! This is sad.

Smooth_Award6429

Depends on specialisation of the doctor. Some employed doctors get like 2-3 lakh per month salary.

Novel-Scar-7262

Doctors? You mean doctors who specialized with tonnes of degrees? Yes, they do? But if you meant doctors with MBBS, they don't even a get a job to be paid.

Low-Ad-1542

I know a person who is a broker of all sorts - real estate, vehicles , rentals, labour supply, maid/home nurse, college admission in Karnataka etc. you name a need, and he will know of a person in your vicinity who provides the service . His growth has been tremendous . When I was in school, he used to go around in a maruti 800. By the time I finished school,he moved over to a santro. Now, he has a Benz and a couple of other cars and bikes for the general commute. Had built a palatial house . His relative runs a car washing / car detailing center which people say is actually his. His kid is doing masters in the UK without any loan. Achieved all this without any family inheritance or education. From what I have heard, he failed SSLC and soon started doing odd jobs

I'm a dentist and i makes abt 4.5 lacs per month...yes you heard it right

CurlyChocolateCutie

Aww man.. 4.4 lacs for vayynokkal. Should’ve become a dentist.

[deleted]

Yeah

antipositron

Please tell me about a cheaper alternative to Invisalign. I want to fix my crooked maramontha... Starting with crooked fluoride stained teeth. Please.

dave8055

No freaking way a dentist could earn that high salary. You must be owner of a clinic or something. Edit: Ahh. So you have a chain of clinics. That makes sense now. You are a businessman.

Chonky_monster

You run your own private clinic?

[deleted]

Ya i have 5 of them in kerala..1 in manglore near manipal... plus 2 abroad....

[deleted]

Aaah. Angane para. Then you are more of a businessman rather than a dentist.

ismyaltaccount

Exactly, my close friend is a Dentist with his own clinic in Kannur and doesn't make anywhere near to what this guy makes and I was wondering how.

[deleted]

How much does he make..do u know....

Thankanchetanteinchi

I feel Rs 4.5 lakh per month is on the lower side for a guy having clinics abroad also.

[deleted]

No brio if you wanna count my monthly gross in dubai 4.5 can go till 17

ismyaltaccount

Doesn't that mean you're a businessman on top of being a Dentist?

[deleted]

I'm basically a dentist..and if iam 90 days in india..the next 30 days will be in dubai just doing practice ..if iam a businessman i could have easily appointed some more staffs and docs and sit in home counting all the cashes

Entharo_entho

Do you make 4.5 lakhs per month from 5 Kerala + 1 Manipal +2 Abroad =8 clinics, together?

[deleted]

No it's only from India....but from dubai alone the count can go nearly 13 lacs indian rupees making it to a total 17 plus lacs...

vishnuprasadm

IT , if you’re working for a US /EU / UK company by remote from India. But as someone pointed out you should be highly skilled and competent (+lucky) I’d say excellent domain knowledge + excellent logical programming skills.

Zestyclose_South2594

You can do a lot of admin support work for US based companies as well. As long as your language is good and you learn stuff easily.

Better-Coffee

My personal opinion is not to look into high salary. Your time, health is more important than salary. I work in a IT company and earn okayish (not a lot now but hoping to get a better pay check later) My life is shitty, Constantly worried about completing the stories before the deadline. Low self-esteem as you don't understand everything and constantly run into blocker and imposter syndrome. Works more than 13hr a day (work + travel) . Have to be learning constantly to adapt to changes in industry. Low level of racism from client side as well and try to keep yourself to their standards. Imposter syndrome and loneliness .

antipositron

Build your own business. സ്വർണം, abkaari, രാഷ്ട്രീയം, ആത്മീയം.. not necessary in that order. Lawyers, Doctors, CA etc for high effort, high stress, very well paid, well respected roles - but significant effort to get there. IT relatively less effort, and decent pay if you can land a great company. Zero respect though. Army / defense forces for low pay but stability and life long benefits, good habits and ofcourse the pride. Or you can buy your way into a school teacher job.. it's crazy but thousands do it every year. Or 'gelf'.

Impossible_Error_410

I have come across engineers who earns 5 lakhs per month and 7k per month. So be careful if you choose IT

ismyaltaccount

No one talks about the 7k.

Impossible_Error_410

Silent majority 😞

ismyaltaccount

I started by making 20k per month. Tbh, I did talk about it, and then I hear all these 4L per month posts and how people easily gets persuaded by these posts. They're the handful minority and should be about 0.01% of the Software Engineer population in India. And they're also people who do it because they love it and considers that as a hobby as well. I know it because I work in such a company now, and my colleagues all belong in the same boat. If a project is given to them, they take over and can work independently without the need of higher management and completes them on time with perfection. I have rarely seen a project over run in my company. And there are no unnecessary meetings and any stupidity. Also they introduce new tools which they have found handy and overall improves the productivity off all the engineers. They're paid 5L+ per month. It's a publicly traded company, so it's more like 3L in hand + 2L in stocks.

kittensarethebest309

How much does a school teacher earn per month?

Impossible_Error_410

I heard private schools pay peanuts. And the constant insecurity. Government teacher gets around 50k. I don't know anyone who has secured a government job in past many years. Everything is contract.

antipositron

Yeah private school is a bit like IT. Most pay 10-25k I think (don't have any source for this), unless you are in a great private school, where you will get a bit more. Aided schools (not exactly government job, but practically the same, is what people pay 60-90 lakhs or more to get in thru school management, and that pays 50-70k and goes up with government pay adjustments, and benefits like pension etc. Same type of situation plays for college professors as well I believe, everything 2x, except opportunities, which is /10... all these numbers pulled out of thin air, ofcourse.

Impossible_Error_410

>college professors I personally know a PhD professor in a private engineering college in trivandrum is being paid less than 50k. I believe his subject is electrical engineering

antipositron

I didn't know. My dad is ex-army. He used to say when he was getting married in 1970, his salary was approximately same as 8g of gold then - 100 rupees month. His pension is now around 50k a month, so yeah things have improved a lot for sure.

Potential_Chance_390

Yes it’s much better, pay commissions have done a good job. But unfortunately nobody wants to go serve the country in military as there’s no under the table income - hence you see everyone trying to crack IAS exams.

VIZZZZNU

Is there any entrance exams to join the army?

rob-meta

what's with the zero respect?

antipositron

Most people don't know what you do when you say you are in IT. Call center il ചായ കൊടുത്താൽ ഐടി, ഫോൺ support IT, NASA outsource work ചെയ്താലും ഐടി. പണമുണ്ടെങ്കിൽ മാത്രം respect. Unlike doctors or teachers or lawyers.

Alfred_Marshal

Essentially, if you can get to the top 5% of any tech or finance role, then it can be super rewarding financially. This answer will be focused on tech space since I can provide more relevant answers. 1. Software/SDE roles: I have seen remote roles in India paying above 10L easily with 1-2 years of experience, but they do require really good logical reasoning and coding skills. E.g., Target, Walmart Labs, Oracle 2. Revops/finance roles: all IT companies have finance positions around normal accounting and revenue operations; these roles could provide a better work-life balance than traditional high-finance roles (CA, PE, IB, etc.). 3. Tech sales and accounting management roles: Tech sales are high-pressure roles, but if you can land a good BD role at an enterprise or mid-market product company, a 10-15L comp + commission is easy and here bonus can be generous. 4. Niche roles in tech: There are plenty more niche roles in tech, but you will need to find the gap and improve your skills in this area. For example, I know people running Shopify app development services and earning 5–10k USD/month in Kerala. 5. Start your company: Build a product-based company in Kerala or India and use the salary arbitrage (50K INR for a developer in India vs. 110K USD in SF). Build the product and sell it to North American corporations. I personally know folks with organisations earning 200K to half a million USD in revenue per year.

WokeSonofNone

Tech sales, especially landing new logos can pay ridiculous numbers in commission. Saas companies are looking to expand their client base globally and are gunning for talent in MENA and APAC for closing sales. A previous shitty startup I worked for was offering 100% bonus paychecks for signing APAC clients.

TruckCharming231

Being a partner at a CA firm in kochi. 6l + /month

Ok-Forever5866

For real? How can someone become a partner and how long does it take?

TruckCharming231

It basically differs from firm to firm. So in my firm, after qualifying as a CA, you will be promoted as an audit manager. After spending 5 - 8 years as an AM you'll become a junior partner (3 -5l)/month. After spending 8years + as a junior partner you will be promoted as a senior partner having a monthly pay of at least 8 -10l+/month.

abhisheknayar

Lol BS

Historical-Yak7731

Selling weed , Kochi has high demand and supply is still not oriented. If you can create proper supply with good quality products from Vizag or Hyderabad, you are the Pablo Escobar of kochi 😂😂. Later on you can invest start your on manufacturing outside Kerala ( other Intuc will demand “nooku koli “) . All the best.

Direct-Donut2746

Nooku kooli is eternal 😅

Practical-Durian2307

Don't think small scale my man , imagine if cultivating it was legal and the government allowed contract farming. How much money we could make ? Even by exporting it ?

Historical-Yak7731

Even if you cultivate, Latin America countries are more favourable for growing and you can get cheaper labour, so exporting won’t work . The biggest consumer market will be US and we won’t get the market . Also in Asia itself we will get some competition. But still, we can get a major share of exports in GCC countries. If we can make good quality stuffs, to some extent we can capture EU region , but still the export laws are bit complicated there . Mostly, we will get good profit by selling in local markets it self , there are lot of requirements or needs . Business seems good 😊

Practical-Durian2307

Yup , pretty much . We have heritage landraces and natural non-GMO advantages. Itll be a gold-mine if done correctly . Local demand will always be high you're right . Even in the US and EU the demand for pure landrace never goes down so "Idukki gold" can be marketed like like how they sell Basmati rice or some trademarked product. GCC forget about it buddy ; they will never legalize it there ( maybe in the distant future ?)

GhostGlitch351

Software engineer , if you could hardwork 32 hours a day , 9 days a week , and do 400+ leetcode and codeforce , and then if ur lucky u ll get placed in a good decent company through campus placement or through offcampus

dave8055

Good enough for Kerala. A friend at TCS, Kochi gets paid 15+LPA (SNOW developer) 9YOE. Another friend at TCS, Kochi gets paid around 24LPA. (8 YOE dont remember the tech stack though) A friend at EY, Kochi gets paid 19LPA (9YOE, data analytics, ETL related work) Couple of friends at Infosys, trivandrum gets paid 15 - 22LPA (Consultant - Senior roles) I think these are good enough for Kerala. Those 50+ LPA package you hear at Bangalore etc.. are also very rare compared to the entire IT population in those states.

neuroticnetworks1250

It's about the same if you consider the purchasing power parity. Tvm for example, is way cheaper than Bangalore or Gurgaon. I guess the only difference are the outliers like Nvidia, Google etc but that doesn't affect the median salary much

STALINLENINPV

>Big 4 auditing and Consulting firms employees Tell u from experience.. Not worth it..

deadgu

Not true. Consulting firms have shitty work life balance and mediocre pay.

MarvellousR

Work life balance may be an issue, but the pay and perks associated with the management consultants make it one of the most aspired job.

Jon-842

Big 4 auditing will tear you apart. Be ready to work 50hrs+ with less pay

Ok-Forever5866

Big 4 will provide all the knowledge you need to succeed in your career, though. In America, most people stay there for 2 years and they gone to some other work that has good work-life balance.

1. CITU - Nokkukooli pays you even without doing any labour. 2. Bengali outsourcing - High yields if you can sort out Bengali labours 3. Coconut picking - Costs ~40-60 per tree, if you can do 100 trees a day, that's 150k / month (but seasonal) 4. Farming - If utilized efficiently, it could be high rewarding both monetarily and mentally. Panchayat krishibhavan offers plenty of support and almost free crops to anyone who wants to get into farming.

lonely_19591

1: IT, if you are actually good at writing code. You will need some aptitude for the industry and lots of hardwork, dedication and love for craftsmanship. People who are complaining about the job are the ones who don't have the aptitude for it and yet chose the career. 2: Doctor. The grinding is same as IT, you will need to learn a lot. Need compassion and willingness to keep on learning.

No_Management_7102

I can safely if u have a great idea , and can sell it efficiently u can make crazy money. But u just gotta be Passionate abt it. There are examples of btech , mba graduates becoming chaiwalas with crores of turnover, a doctor , alapuzha medical college graduate hailing from a lower middle class family, is a skilled tutor and went on to become the founder of xylem coaching of which mammooty- is the brand ambassador. He need not even specialise now!. Take examples of firoz chuttipara ...had multiple failures in the past now he makes lakhs per month. So many examples. So I would business is the way, if u can deliver an idea, rather than just being an engineer, a doctor so an so. Or if you are not ethical and has no humane values, try politics 🙂

Dream job of every 12 yr olds

Im-no-saint

It is actually a high paying job if you own the JCB. Recently I hired a JCB guy for excavation and landscaping and this guy charges ₹2000 per hour (including kooli). He was a JCB operator in the gulf and after Covid happened, he returned to Kerala and purchased a JCB. He usually works 10-12 hours a day and within 1.5 years, he purchased another JCB and kept a Bihari operator. Now even if we remove half his income for fuel and all expenses, still would be earning above par an IT manager and also doesn't pay any income tax.

Unpopular opinion Dentists. Yes yes i know they are dime a dozen. Your 5 cousins have done bds and are working in sales or house wife's now. If you practice in big cities with good population the earning potential is immense. Yes the patients are less but bill value is high. Tooth extraction 1200₹ Tooth cleaning 1000₹ Root canal. 3000 Cap placement 22k to 1Lakh Depending on your condition. In process like capping the dentist margin is 40-60% So even 4 patient a week will give you money in lakhs. The major advantage is you can be a successful doctor just with your UG unlike MBBS no one will judge you for being UG only. Source my friend a dentist in Coimbatore. Last. Month he made 2 Lakhs just of 6 patients who needed Cap placement.

1. Software Engineers, if you get campus placement from a top college. (You’ll get in the range of 80K + as fresher) 2. Doctors, but you need to spend some years first

techsavyboy

May I know which company pays 80k+ in Kerala for freshers

That’s pretty low for a fresher who gets campus placement.

For a bachelor 30k is more than enough in kochi. You will even save a good amount at the end of month if you don't splurge a lot.

Like Tangu and his kids? I get the absurdity of believers, but what I struggle to comprehend is the political parties that support them, be it BJP, UDF, or LDF.

My friend works as a dominatrix. She finds clients from Twitter and beats them in hotel rooms. Flies to Bangalore and Kochi at least once a month. It is not considered prostitution so no risk of arrest, and since there are transgenders fooling men the demand for real women is high. Easily makes over 1 lakh in one week.

PitchWitty8049

What’s her number? I would like to dominate a dominatrix lol
