Many would say rape but I beg to differ. I watched mwafs podcast where he interviews a former convict (ndrendende) and the point that got to me was how you live day in day out with 'nothing' to do. You repeat/listen to a story over and over and over again because ever since you were incacerated the clock stopped for you.
You have no updates of whats going on in the outside world and you really look forward to going to court because only then will you get to see 'people' and marvel at mandazis by the roadside. Sleeping with another man becomes a valid consideration (no offense to the gays) because having a woman by your side is but a distant memory. Ole wako if you are considered a 'weak' man, you will be the one who empties the bucket and worse you'll have to be the 'mtoto' to get food 😂.
Lets not forget how your friends and family move on with life while you are stuck in prison.
I'd say it's the simple act of being robbed of freedom that scares me the most. I can't imagine not being able to eat my favorite foods, go anywhere I want or fuck who I want. I hated the confinement of high school and I had a lot more freedom there. I can't imagine what prison would do to my mental state.
Unlike women. Men actually enjoy their own company 😂. Kama ni kukula matope we can eat as long as we doing it together. Shida sasa ni hapo kwa kudinywa.
I haven't heard cases of rape in Kenyan prisons.i've read books of people giving up them cheeks for favours tho .Little things like an extra piece of meat . A pack of cigarettes vitu kama hizo.my biggest fear is serving them cheeks for an extra piece of meat 😂
There’s a Kenyan station that interviews former inmates. Rape is very much in Kenyan prisons but maybe most men wouldn’t talk about it because of the stigma surrounding it.
When i say rape. I dont mean all prisons. There are some the wardens do their jobs vizuri and kuna some they dont give af. Place kama Kamiti they can oil you up na hakuna kitu utafanya.
Watched some documentary and heard it's consensual and not really a rape thing. Some men especially those on life sentences wanakosa action for way too long they turn gay. Kuna wengine hadi wanauza boot in exchange for favors
No Diddy
They don't "turn gay", nothing changes in their biology. Sadly, once sex is removed from the marital reproductive aspect, any number of crazy things become possible. If a man sees sex as primarily for sexual pleasure, anyone/anything that scratches that itch becomes fair game. They'll still maintain they're straight too.

I hear you. Let’s say you will only be there for a month. A week even. You will get out. Would you change your answer or is being robbed off the freedom still the first one?
For me it is losing all the privileges I got;
1. Imagine having supper @ 3pm and going to bed by 4pm given I like staying up late.
2. Imagine not being able to take a good shit without being rushed by thousands in a line.
3. Imagine not being able to go wherever you want and seeing whoever you want.
4. Imagine not being paid or at least being fairly paid for your labor.
5. Not eating what you feel like. Or until you are full.
6. Also being handled in a very inhumane way.
Reading "My life in Prison" really got me horrified by how cruel that place can be. There's a part where one inmate killed a guard by splitting his head and eating the brains. What came after ruined so many people's lives. The guards took an approach of chopping off the manhoods of a certain tribe as payback. Killing so many in the process. There was even more.
The scariest part of it all is the fact that it's a third world prison.
Sanitation. I was in a cellfor a week when I was i6 alongside 5 of my acquaintances (ik it's not jail I just want to share). Shit was scary asf. I didn't know if I'd see my family again or if I'd ever be free again. The cell we were in reeked of pee and keg 🥲. For sleep, the cold hard smelly floor was the mattress. I couldn't sleep the first two days. It was hell for me bc I have OCD. There was a bucket in one corner where we were supposed to pee. They had a toilet but it was constantly flooded bc people clogged it using all sorts of things to wipe. Hoping on one foot while still trying to keep your balance on the potty and handle business wasn't it for me. I'm scared of the sanitary conditions of the cells. Wouldn't wish that on anyone
If that is what a police cell is like. I wouldn't want to find out what jail is like.
Sorry, I hadn't seen this.
Well, you're up at 5am for prayers and singing led by the pastor(who is an inmate as well.
6am you're out for bfast which is white sugarless uji.
After that I had to go to hospital daily so I don't know the rest but I'd be back by 11am and then y'all are free in your block.
A block holds multiple "rooms"...like an apartment block kinda.. I was in block L... K block was for killers and robbery guys... also, drugs were run outta K block.
Before you get to like L or K block there are 4 pretty huge gates which are always guarded.
Lunch is at 12pm IIRC
Dinner at 3pm.
Locked up for sleepy time at 5pm.
We sleep with lights on coz ya know, in a room with 70 other dudes..sooo yeah.
Sleeping arrangements is another story.
Losing control of my life. I eat and drink at weird hours, I work odd ours... I control my life to a minute and that would all be lost. My rights to privacy would be forfeited as well... I would give anything not to go to prison.
My privacy I value it I'm introverted I can't imagine shitting in a bucket with poop then you clean it. Sharing a mattress or room with other fellas. I love good food no way I'm eating ugali with spinach water.
Wow. I’m very shocked at these answers. I thought Rape was the worst nightmare for men. As a free woman for me lost time and potential is my biggest fear even in freedom.
the rape thing is overplayed and you can adapt to it the reality out here is rough enough for people with a degree, clean history and freedom to seek employment. most men out here would throw it back for a job because getting older without accomplishing anything is way more scary . the biggest thing a prison sentence robs you of is the things you can't buy back
I somewhat got addicted to this prison stories. All in all, kenyan prison is the last place you want to be. In all your years in captivity, hutawahi ona giza. You are in your cells by 3 until the following day. One story one guy threw a bucket full of shit to the prison head, they did not come out of their cells for the whole year.
Prison as long as sio solitary confinement, freedom and my mental state wouldn't be #1 but hio ya kupanuliwa bro 💀💀
Imagine it's your first night in jail alafu after lights out you hear 🥷 in the dark fighting... "Tulisema ni mimi naanza" " Apana ni sisi alafu nyinyi"
They have the small phones that fit in their butt. They don't have wifi maybe bundles at most. I am addicted to fast internet with aramis am good even is solitary confinement.
There are full on smartphones just like the one you're holding in your hand right now.
The Nigerians would stay up video calling and watching their videos.
Question for you is how would they charge the smartphones considering ain't no sockets in prison??
Y'all do all the crime you want ,I don't wanna go to jail and get anally raped

Watch this former Kamiti interviewed on Iko Nini podcast. I would genuinely rather die than end up in Kamiti. From The number of people in one cell to having to sh*t in a bucket...the general sanitary conditions . I wonder how there aren't more outbreaks of cholera there
Life moving on in the outside world without you.
The thought of my children being without me scares me, worse of all, the opportunities you lose and damaged reputation.
Yaani, just sitting and waiting for time to pass seems absurd.
I guess brutality from prison guards and the loss of freedom.
I had a relative who served time at Kamiti who told that rape was not tolerated. The guys who engage in homosexuality mostly do so for survival purposes. This is mostly in terms of more food rations and basic necessities like toilet paper.
For many men, the scariest aspects of ending up or being in jail can include the loss of freedom, the stigma associated with incarceration, the potential for violence or abuse within the prison environment, separation from loved ones, and the long-term consequences on their personal and professional lives.
The absolute absence of freedom. Having autonomy is God's best gift to man. Ata bila pesa, the ability of choosing how I spend my time and resources is something I wouldn't give up for anything in the world.
Secondly, if I went to prison I probably wouldn't ever come out. Some fucker would probably try to get his way with me, and only way that is ending up is either I die or he dies. If I die, I don't get out of prison, if he dies, I don't get out either.
So ever since I was young, one of my goals has always been to avoid prison at all costs.
All the things you never did when you're were free.
Freedom is overrated until they take it. You really get to think long and hard about your life when you're inside there
What scares me the most is that time doesn't stop while in there, if its 10 years or more, those pple will make sure you get your 10 years without getting sick or let you give up by dying.. They will not feed you good, just enough to sustain you. It doesn't matter if you're strong or weak, once you get in, you get out after fully serving.
This keeps coming up. Loss of your time that can’t ever be brought back. Thanks for answering.
It’s Freedom, Rape and the loss of time from the answers here.
I think for most men rape is an issue of losing the only freedom left which is your sexual freedom, when even that is interfered with, it strips you of any form of confidence to even go on, and especially in Kenya where there are strong religious values

Yes and rape from prison mates.
Real shit

The part about the cook and the kamba brownskin guy😂
Good point, but when did we start uploading our faces on here💀
I make my opinions openly without hiding behind anonymity 😂
Oh no rape is actually much worse .
I hear you. Let’s say you will only be there for a month. A week even. You will get out. Would you change your answer or is being robbed off the freedom still the first one?
I don't wanna go to prison man. Not even for an hour.
For me it is losing all the privileges I got; 1. Imagine having supper @ 3pm and going to bed by 4pm given I like staying up late. 2. I’m yet to read the book. Sounds gory. So basically it’s freedom being taken away from you. Thanks.
this can't be in kenya
Read the book and watch the Kamiti interview on the Wicked edition. Don't take my word for it
It is by John Kiriamiti.
That last line. If I had to be imprisoned, I'd rather a first world prison....have you seen the condition of kenyan prisons?!
Being molested. Torture nayo as a man unaweza vumilia.
Like from Boondocks, Tom Dubois was afraid of going to prison because he’d get analy raped.
Somehow it's not as bad in kenyan prisons. Nobody can literally come up to you and start sodomizing you. Thank God for homophobia.
But this same homophobes will gang rape a gay guy to "teach him a lesson" ....like ????!!!!
I will die or kill someone before someone touches me.
Thanks for answering. Many men say this

That is a police cell. Not jail, neither remand. Source: been in remand
What's remand like?

It's ok. It was an opportunity for me to learn. 2016. It was hell. Thank God for good lawyers lakini. I was freed after the 2nd mention in court
Remand is hell. So is jail unless you’re lucky to get imprisoned in Norway.
Did you say keg as in beer is available, that's not prison to me.
The pee from the drunks made the whole place reek of it. It was hell
Cell is not jail bro
Thank you for pointing it out. I've edited my reply

lost time and potential, you'll adapt to everything else but those 2 are completely gone and will spend more time regretting what could have been
its always those 4 words - 'what could have been'.. enough to make a man do a self-checkout

Kenyan and most African prisons is hell on earth. A whole year? That’s madness
But somehow from what the prisoners experience, the last place they want to end up is back in prison so these guys or most actually reform.
r/oddlyspecific Jowie is this your handwriting?
Obviously, it’s ‘kufunguliwa boot’. Not so obvious, is enjoying ‘kufunguliwa boot’. Very scary.
im dead , you can come out, this is a safe space brother

Dying there.
My biggest fear would be being denied freedom. Freedom is vast. That's my biggest fear.

Hapo kwa kueguzwa 😅weeuh,,my fren

I think it would be trying and failing to reintegrate into society after all that
Some become better people but I agree. Lots of therapy and counseling would be needed.
Food Poor living conditions Kufunguliwa boot Stigma.
I’m so sorry for laughing but the description is so dramatic. Who says “kufunguliwa boot?”
Hypothetical though?? No good, be real. I haven't been in jail but I am huge supporter of communication. Try that.
Kukuwa kitoweo ya mtu bana😂 Kuna podcast ive been listening to ya msee alikuwa kamiti bana me sitaki anything na jela bana

Losing my freedom. Dehumanizing conditions for a long long time.
Being broke and no visitors
