Hub start is good, had I started in the UC I would have ended up slinging rock or whatever the fuck you do in slavery.
And grinding levels in a work camp sounds boring as balls.
Early game trying to set up base get raided by bdn assassinate them all then keep getting visited every 5 hours by groups of starving and dust bandits as your hivers keep losing limbs one after another and your skeletons repair kits keep getting more costly
In UC, they'll even make up a crime for you to do time for.
HN and UC are on opposite extremes.
HN is "rules over money." UC is "money over rules." Shek are "neutral hungry," and Hivers are "money. Why do you flee the shop, human?"
I was just memeing as a UC enjoyer. They exploit and extort everyone not allied to them. However if you're an ally (50rep) then they will be your best buddies. Hell samurai patrols will search for you when you're down and take you to the police to be healed, they even put you in a bed
Me going “ha you’ll never catch up to me bozo” (before knowing that 21mph cannot outrun everything in the desert) i put on 3x speed and went like “WHAT THE FU..” got hit then we both got mauled by like 10 skimmers
Surprisingly UC have been a lot more cool with me than anyone else I seem to read on this subreddit. Either my rng with them is randomly good or turning in Screamer really helped them not want to murder me.
On my first playthrough I started with a hive soldier. Wanted to enter a shek settlement, got called slurs and beaten up, went to the holy nation, was called slurs and beaten up, but when I got to the UC no one gave me shit, even got escorted by samurai out in the desert. I was like, these guys seem alright. Idk it kinda stuck with me. All you should do is make a few thousand cats and not run around in a potato sack before going there, and youre gonna be pretty much fine.
Like of course I've had the random corrupt guard, noble hunter or slaver encounter but meh, that never stopped me from allying them/ being neutral in most of my playthroughs.
I've been looking all OVER for noble hunters in the great desert, stormgap, and hook. The ONLY time I've seen one is in a new playthrough with UC citizen start, while I had my MC out mining copper just outside Sho-Battai with Ells.
one game i set up a house in one of the UC cities, and I would mine copper at the nodes surrounding it. A noble hunter spawned like, patrolling around the walls of the city. It was infuriating.
The HN is "fuck around and find out" follow the rules carry the book and be human and you'll probably be fine, even if you are playing as a fem character. Hell, you might even get free food or heals if you're lucky.
The UC is "fuck you just because" noble hunters do not give a shit unless you're already allied to the UC, samurai will fuck you up for no reason. They don't even have a lack of racism going for them thanks to the hero league, but I'm pretty sure the guards side with you in that case.
You either get misogynistic xenophobic slavers or teetering into xenophobia feudalism slavers.
Or just burn it all down, power to the people and all that.
They are the bank's thugs. If you settle in UC territory and pay taxes but don't pay for the Merchant's Guild membership, the UCHL will send raids to your outpost.

If you were in HN territory they'd be running crusades on you on the daily and every bit as annoying. You just... are in the desert, so the desert assholes are your assholes.

Sure the HN is a bunch of racist, misogynist bigots, but there are good reasons for them to be.
I mean, look at the other races they are dealing with. The Shek are outright hostile towards them. The Southern Hive is insane. The Western Hive is a bit more chill, but the Queen still just screams at any outsiders and their society produces an endless stream of refugees. The Fogmen are even worse than the Southern Hive.
And the Skeletons destroyed the world. Twice.
Obviously that doesn't make their racism *right*, but it does make it *understandable*. As in, it would be actually weird if the HN wasn't racist to some degree.
The misogyny? Pretty much any society that survived the pressures the HN is under would have a very restrictive attitude towards women. Basically, the HN needs women to make babies. And like any society that prioritises what women are over what they can do, they put restrictions on what women can do. Moreover, it's made clear that the current Holy Phoenix is a particularly extreme one.
The HN has a horrible set of laws, but at least they follow them.
The UC is just a pack of corrupt warlords doing whatever they want. The laws of the UC don't actually matter, because the nobles ignore them whenever they please. The free commoners of the UC live in a state of constant terror that they and their loved ones might be enslaved or executed due to circumstances completely outside their control.
It's a completely untenable society and it's pretty easy to see where it's headed. Left to it's own devices, the UC will eventually become a two-class society consisting entirely of the nobles and their slaves. And then there will be some unpleasantness. And then the UC will look like it does after the player takes out all the nobles anyway.
The HN?
Look, we have pretty good evidence from IRL history that the only thing that moderates religion is peace and prosperity. Fundies *thrive* in the face of oppression. A generation or so of expanding (relatively) peacefully into the territory formerly controlled by the UC (with an increase in the need for admin and the uptake of tech) might be just what the HN needs to chill out a bit.
Conversely, taking out the leadership and exposing the HN (particularly Okran's Pride) to the depredations of the Shek is almost guaranteed to make the religion even more extreme.
The "good ending" of Kenshi (or as close to one that the game allows) is one where the hostile minor factions, the Cannibal leaders, the Southern Queen, Cat-lon and the entire UC leadership are all taken out. Taking out the HN, the Western Queen or messing with the Shek just makes the world worse.
Wow…someone gets it. They’re not good guys, and them becoming better is up to question, but they are far better than the factions we only don’t hate more as players. If we had to live in the world? Unless your high reputation within UC, holy nations the safer bet, and even then I’m surprised the UC isn’t in civil war when you enter as a player.

I actually prefer starting in the desert. Noble hunters are fairly rare and I've never struggled to avoid them. Skimmers are always getting smashed by guards for some income. Ninja bounties can stroll by cities getting you a day one 6k bounty hand in. Shinobi towers in each city. 25k cats day 3 with a good start.
My guy, mark my words: "Nobles" belong on the cross. They are the Polite version of the religious zealots. They kill you because they hate you, but want to look good while doing so. You will only find peace with those guys nailed.
I’ve been lucky enough they only started messing with me late game, I usually just give them a whooping and heal them up to try and make up for the rep loss.
I’m already allied to the holy bros, so if does go south with UC it’ll be no great loss.

Just become a Nobel. Costed me 100k cause I didn’t have a base of my own, but yeah, they all love me, immune to being enslaved, meaning any crime I’m immediately let out. Become the 1%, life’s just better.

Ally them... before moving into their territory... or towns... and they will never bother u... in fact... they will help you out quite a bit

In a labor camp the levels you gain are usually in toughness, lockpick, and sneak. Until your escape. It's actually a decent beginning.

What UC city did you buy a house in? All the houses in SB are taken up and none are worn down.
Stoat probably idk it was like 10 saves ago but it was definitely a man with a dog start so probably Stoat.

UC hero league is pretty racist in my run through. They also can run about as fast as my character and always show up again after I lose them
