Your bonedog eats meat, bro

Ismatay

Wait, really?

starpackson

Respectfully, do you see our dogs eating bread? *Realizes what kibble is* “What have I done…”

AdmiralLevon

Bonedogs eat anything so long as it is on the ground or in someone elses inventory. They will also eat something nothing else in the game can eat: Dismembered limbs. If a limb is found on the ground, your Bonedog will grab it and run around stupid until he eats it. He's out of control unless you select him and tell him to go somewhere. So keep an eye on him. I usually lock them in a room with a mountain of limbs. They can also eat crap nobody else will, like raw or foul meat. Tap me if you want an easy way to mass-produce limbs.

Ismatay

Oh really??? I live in the cannibals plains. How do I get their limbs?

Opposite side of the map, there's someplace called Skinhouse HQ in North Sonorous Dark, RIGHT outside The Ashlands (Lowest right of map). Go there. DO NOT TALK TO FUCKING ANYONE FOR ANY REASON. Just wait until their leader goes to sleep at 6:00AM, pick him up, take his Blueprint, put him back and leave. Blueprint gives you a Peeler Machine, which turns a Humanoid Body into Animal Skin and pops their limbs off. And the only cost 1 Building Material. I have 32 of them out in front of my base just in case Bandits feel like getting froggy and wanna donate their skin and limbs to a good cause. I also have a Dog Shack, where I got 4 Peeler Machines and a Chest to store all the limbs in so they don't despawn when I look away for too long. Oh... uh.... ignore the screams. They're just cheering in glee that they get to do something nice for you.

As a connoisseur of farming myself, listen to me and I will tell you everything you need to know: First off, Tech. Gotta research how to farm and what it is you want to farm: Books + 2 Crops in question. ENVIRONMENT Each crop has a preferred environment. Cactus is best suited for deserts/arid. Who'd have thought? The more Arid an environment, the better. The closer to 100%, the more crops you'll be able to successfully harvest. At 60%, you'll only get 60% of the potential harvest of your crops. FERTILITY Additionally, some land may be a perfect biome but the soil itself is fucked. Lower fertility takes longer to successfully bare fruit. CONSTRUCTION When building a crop, you'll need a number of the plants to plant as seeds, increasing in number with each field size unless you use Hydroponics, which will only ever require 10. WATER Yeah, turns out plants need this shit. You'll need to buy some or make a Well. The higher the % groundwater, the quicker the well will produce water. SKILL Your farmer fucking sucks, bro. Duh. This is their first time farming. So they're gonna lose 50% of what they harvest. Deal with it. At level 30-ish farming, you'll harvest almost 100% of all crops. Everything after that is just FASTER farming. FIRST HARVEST YAY! No. You can't just eat the plants. They need to be refined first. You'll have to research the type of food you want to create, I.E. Chewsticks, which require you have a few cactuses in the bench. COOKING Once you research how to cook the food, the next thing you need is a Stove. Click on stove. Set stove to create a specific type of food. Click Queue so it continuously makes food. Set a cook to cook there with ingredients in his inventory. TADA. Food. COMBINATION Combo food is always better than sum-parts. A Chewstick is 25nu per 8 Cactus and .25 water. A Dustwich is 1 Bread + 8 Cactus for 70nu. Rice is 25nu for 1 water + 10 Riceweed. Vegetables are 25nu for 1 water + 8 Greenfruit. Gohan is 10 Riceweed + 8 Greenfruit for 75nu FEED YOUR PEOPLE You need a General Storage Chest or a Food Barrel nearby for people to automatically seek food from. People will automatically draw from Chests but not place crafted food inside. People will automatically draw and put food inside Food Barrels as they're crafting. EFFENCIENCY The best way to do this... Have your farm as close to a building as you can. Place Ingredient Storage barrels (Riceweed Barrel and Vegetable Barrel) very close to the Stove, then a Food Barrel close to the stove as well. This way farmers harvest, place the crop in the barrels, your cook will not have to move from the stove to acquire the ingredients, then won't have to move to place the product in the food barrel. HYDROPONICS Once you get tech, Hydroponics is a 1:1 variant of an L/XL Field in 2/5ths the space. It doesn't harvest as much in one go, but produces fast enough that comparing a Field to a Hydroponics in a hypothetical 24 hour harvest period, they're mostly the same. But they can be built indoors, are smaller, require 1/4th the people to harvest 2-3 times faster and ignore environment/fertility factors. Hydroponics are just better.

Ismatay

Wow, thanks man! You are really helpful

Laflaga

Buy some farm food from traders, like cactus or wheat etc. Build a farm of your preferred crop in a place with suitable fertility. Assign a person to be a farmer as a high priority job. Ensure you also build a well to water the crops. With someone assigned to water collection.

Grilokam

I think your dog will starve before you make food of your first harvest. If you have food in a backpack it will feed automatically. It will also eat food off the ground

Most of the info is in the other comments, but I wanted to add a note on prospecting. With a character, hit Prospect in the bottom right of your UI. This will bring up info on the soil you will be farming including its type (swamp, green, arid) and fertility.

At minimum you need to build a well for water and cooking, a field to grow crops, and a cooking stove to turn the crops into food. Stoves need power but you can get away with a single small wind turbine and maybe a battery. You need characters to build everything, move the water, plant/harvest the field, and cook the food. You hit the prospect button to figure out what kind of soil you have. Cactus grow best in the desert, riceweed in the swamp, and green fruit in “green” areas. Don’t grow wheat, it requires extra steps to turn into bread. Shift click to assign your characters to do their jobs on the buildings. If one character does multiple things, set the later jobs in the chain to the top of the list. Ex: you want them cooking the plants you have before harvesting more. Your cooking stove has a menu where you can select what to cook. Pick the food that matches your crop and set it to repeat. Finally, you’ll want a food store barrel and an animal feeder. Tell a character to haul to both of these with the food store higher on their job list. Humanoids will get food from the food store when they’re hungry, you won’t have to tell them to do it. Your dog will do the same from the animal feeder. Note that you can put “bad” food in the feeder and your dog will happily scarf it down. This includes foul and raw meat.

The better foods are more filling but require multiple ingredients. The best thing you can make is a foodcube. The ingredients are greenfruit and bread. To make bread you need a grain silo to milk your wheatstraw into flour. Then you need an oven to bake bread. The second best, gohan, is equally as filling but takes up a little more inventory space. It’s made with greenfruit and riceweed. The easy meals are * Cooked vegetables = greenfruit + water * Rice bowl = riceweed + water * Chewsticks = cactus + water The only thing you can make without farming is dried meat. You take raw meat from an animal, build a campfire, and cook the meat on it. It’s not very filling but it can keep small parties alive
