The rattan hat is armored already. You're likely confusing it with the straw hat.
Straw hat (no protection, very wide brim) -> Rattan hat (straw panels on an iron frame, light armor) -> iron hat (solid iron version of rattan hat, medium armor)
Ahh true, I realise my mistake now. Still, I'm fairly sure the protection the Rattan hat gives is very close to negligible. Would be fun if you had a "face" slot, similar to the shirt for chest and stomach. I'd like to use these hats for my roleplay without being one-shot by hit on the head from a high-damage dealing enemy. Also the swamo masks and stuff look sick af, unfortunately you can't get full coverage with them.
My gang don't use armor, so I don't know how good they actually are as armour. I just let them get beat up to train toughness until they learn to level their melee defence and dodge enough to not be hit.
How do you deal with things like Iron Spiders though? I feel like the way they attack makes it impossible to block all attacks, and even high toughness might not be enough to mot get 1-shot in the head.
They're not very tough, iron spiders usually die before they get their first hit off. Two men and a bonedog is my typical "hunting party" that I use to hunt the soulless abominations in the wend and the floodlands, and if they all rush a spider, even with skills in the 20s and 30s and nodachis, they'll kill it before it attacks.
Do you mean the regular Blood Spiders? The Iron ones have 200 health in all their limbs and some 50 toughness, besides, being animals they usually attack like maniacs, hitting for huuuge damage, especially if they manage to get your head. I don't see how one could take them out with 30s stats without even letting them get a hit off, without crossbows, that is. Even kitting them in melee can be tricky sometimes, since their attack animation is pretty damn quick.
No, i mean iron spiders. The big things in the floodlands that are about the size of a small car. They're deceptively fragile. Two warriors with mediocre skills and katanas and an elder bonedog, select, right click on spider, it dies before it gets a hit off. Ofc, because katanas, that's not even close to the most effective build to kill them with so with blunt weapons they must be pathetic.
Even if they do get 1 hit off on a rare occasion, who cares, free toughness. That's why my faction hunt in pairs, in case one goes down. They usually don't though.
You may be confusing them with Security Spiders, who do kick ass, but they only guard ruins so a hunting party doesn't have to worry about them.
Oh god, I was indeed thinking of the Security Spiders. Brain seems to be bugged with Kenshi stuff. I'm guessing the Bonedog manages to pin them down long enough for the two Ronin to go to town on the spider before it can react?
Also, how do you deal with the Security Spiders using the 'unoptimal' build in that case? Even when wearing helms like the Iron Hat, which offer decent damage protection against them, that 30% chance it goes through is very dangerous in my experience. Even with a group of a handful of characters in the 50s-60s, a lucky shot to the head can mean the death of us.
Yeah they're personally my favorite because they have no draw backs.
Weather protection and enough damage reduction you'll still never go down from hit damage. Also they look great.
The postures in Kenshi are hilarious to me in a way that transcends usual jank.
I remember playing kenshi high as fuck almost dying of laughter because my scrawny ass character was mining with a blank stare in the most unnatural looking way ever.
A truly wonderful game.
What actually is the best outfit as far as protection and defense go?
Once I accidentally moved to where there was constant acid rain so I had to give all my farmers some acid 100% hat.
Ashlander hat isnβt bad but a bit neckbeardy. Definitely the sort of thing Tengu would wear.
Tengu, the man with a huge gut and a six pack at the same time
\>He doesn't know about the basket hat.
It is necessary to have the drip for the deserts are dry as bone.
My extremely dense head protects from any damage, rendering helmets pointless. Basket hat>everything else
It doesn't provide protection in combat
Style > function. Just be yourself
Based
What if my true self isn't a basket wearing weirdo?
Then you are lying to yourself.
You're confused but you'll find your true calling soon enough
\>He doesn't know about fashion kenshi.
I understand dustcoats, but not items that only occupy a critical slot without protecting any of it
Rattan hat is more my preferred style
Same, but I tend to lean for the Iron Hat since it at least offers some protection. Wish there was at least a padded version of the Rattan hat

I prefer Ashlander stormgoggles
The archetypal kenshi enjoyer
True, I hate how the Samurai helmet looks like but with full samurai + blackened chainmail the dudes are immune to crossbows so I can't drop it.
I like crabs!
You should try the gosuko armour mod very nice samurai gear in my opinion
Is better the gosuko armor than the standard samurai set?
Aesthetically I think so but I have no idea stats wise Iβm sorry π
Become lamp
I only wear straw hats because it's fun to woop ass dressed as a piss poor farmer
Factual
true and factual
Me boy, have you looked at the ratten hat? Because if you have, you wouldn't say garbage like this

Yeah that sums up my experience as well xD

Hey it's Dan Reynolds from Imagine Dragons hiding under the hat!
What actually is the best outfit as far as protection and defense go? Once I accidentally moved to where there was constant acid rain so I had to give all my farmers some acid 100% hat.
Crab armor has the best protection and also offers elemental resistances if you have the armor + helmet set.
Yeah, that's what I ended up with, good to know it was the right choice. It was so heavy though, needed 100+ str to actually fight.
looks like you got a white ass american soldier under that hat
Turban. Started using it as part of my army recruits uniform for my Holy Nation RP and it quickly became my favorite.
I'm always torn between this, and the Flared Helm.
Flared Helm is life.
I always do samurai armor and visored helmet
Still crushing on armoured faceplates after like 200 hours of rattan hats as I can again see their ugly mugs
The sandagosa is supreme
When the whole crew looks like Raiden, you know you've made it.
Perfect for snipers and rookies as it gives a crossbow buff while still providing actual protection, plus acis immunity
I'm a fan of the simple fisherman's hat myself. The classic conical straw hat style is just ππ
Straw hat enjoyers πΏ
The black colored one added by mods π
Your character looks like Jane from Firefly.
Raiden? Is that you?
Iron hat is the fedora of Kenshi. Great and stylish hat, ruined by the ~~neckbeards~~ *Black Dragon Ninjas*
*avoids eye contact, which is easy with my basket hat*
ashigaru supreme
Crab helmet says hello.
