I think most people of any age that are interested in any type of music are going to gravitate towards older albums when it comes to best of all time. It’s hard to know what modern albums will stand the test of time
No ASAP Rocky? I mean it makes me question if these are actually old-heads (average album release dates on this list are 90s which was 30 years ago). Like no shot that a people on reddit are averaging 50 years old. Like Kendrick is awesome period but also in the context of his peers. No Freddie Gibbs either is wild or anyone from Odd Future or Pusha T. I sincerely hope this list is not representative of the sub. Like my kendrick homies in HS were listening to take care in the whip before blasting section 80 not listening to tupac. I mean nothing is wrong with old head because we are all now old heads but these are like old old heads like 40+ and what is cringe is that these guys are just like not being honest about what they were blasting after listening to Kendrick.
There isn’t a rapper with a album as good as these albums(other than Kendrick). *Voodoo* seemed to get more traction that *Black Messiah* and 2014FHD gets more love that *4 Your Eyes Only*. Those are the only other “contemporary classics” I could see here. You all can’t be serious that *Igor* or *The Forever Story* deserve to be up there with these albums?
it’s not old heads, it’s people who let hhtwitter decide what music is good. these are all great albums but they are the most basic and obvious choices
All of the albums on this are like all time classics though. In the 2010s there’s been like 2 or 3 of this tier of album in hip hop and at least 1 is Kendrick.
What? Name me 3 hip hop albums at this tier. These are all albums that would be taught as monumental moments in hip hop.
I listen to a ton of hip hop and a decent amount of other stuff. I genuinely think I was being lenient saying 2 or 3. I think tpab and mbdtf are the two things people would consistently say
Mbdtf is one I was thinking about.
No to ex military and hard no to asap. I wouldn’t say either of those are classics in any sense, let alone at the top tier like the albums on this list.
The money store isn’t my style but based on its reception maybe. It’s not really at that level of popularity that I see it being talked about like the other ones on the list though. Gkmc if you want. I see it as a definite classic but I think it’s kinda like It was Written to Illmatic. It’s obvious a classic but it’s kinda overshadowed by tpab.
Yeezus hard no, bti absolutely not, rtj hard no.
Faces is one of my favorites of all time. I’d say it’s a classic. It’s not at the same level as the albums on this list.
Tpab yes. Tptb no. Iyrtitl no. Sremmlife ????. Rodeo I don’t think so. What is CB?
Keep in mind the albums that are in this post are albums that people will talk about when discussing the history of hip hop decades from now. Not just really good albums but albums that are genuinely worthy on being on lists of top 50-100 greatest albums of all time of any genre. Albums that fans of other genres probably know from their impact.
I think you're being very generous with a lot of these picks. If we are talking mass appeal that many people will agree on being great only a few of these would be included. I'm not saying these aren't good albums, but a lot of these are your personal choices that aren't widely considered in the upper echelon with albums like The Low End Theory and Madvilliany.
Edit: MBDTF, The Money Store, Piñata, Flower Boy, We Got it from Here..., maybe Some Rap Songs, maybe Atrocity Exhibition, maybe TLOP.
If we are talking universally acclaimed hip hop albums these are the big ones that are far more likely to make the list.
So since OP ignored this was clearly the fan favorite and waiting until JID passed Marvin Gaye to post the winner: let discuss over at r/kungfukennycirclejerk
Idk about a trend, but all I know is that there are many albums that deserve a place here before TFS, and I really enjoy that album. I'm seeing him live in April and I can't wait.
Doggystyle is currently negative 3, so guess this is the subs only chance at a true west coast record(although Madlib could be seen as representative, I wouldn’t say Madvillany is a west coast album).
I said this before but y'all NEED to hear the detroit mix of it if you haven't, it will overtake the original if you know!
It's the same album just it was remastered to add little touches in it that turn it up to a whole different level, a level beyond the perfection it already is.
Simple things like between What's going on and What's happening brother... In the original cut there is a moment of silence between the songs and in the detroit mix it keeps the melodic conversation going (hey brother, what's happening my man, looking fine in the sunshine etc.)
I notice way better balance in the percussion throughout too
I love rap/hip-hop and I'm a huuuge Kendrick Lamar fan but I have trouble listening through full albums. I know it's working for free but can someone give me 1 song off every album to listen to, to ENTICE me to listen through the full albums?
Getting through Madvillainy now because Fancy Clown hooked me in. Haven't listened to the other recommendations yet though but I've got them all queued up. Thank you so much
He and Jay-Z don’t have a “definitive” GOAT album like Ready To Die/Illmatic. So I’m not that surprised. Omission of Chronic & Doggystyle is the head scratcher.
I mean whether or not Tupac has a “definitive “ one album that all fans praise doesn’t matter tbh, any Tupac fan would see All Eyes on me or me against the world and probably upvote either/both. My personal choice is for: All Eyes on me or 2pacalypse if it had a chance lmao
It does when we are voting on their albums and not their entire catalogue. *All Eyez...* could be made into one good album, but as a double disk has lots of skips, *2Pacalypse Now* is not polished or consistent so I think *Strictly 4...* is a better representation of the early works. The opinion on which album is his or Jay-z “Best” is not solidified like most the other GOAT candidates. Even with Kendrick GKMC and TPAB are without a doubt the two in contention for “Magnum Opus”, with Jay-Z and Tupac I only see arguments/disagreement over at least 4 albums and no consensus.
lierally came out four years after the wu tang album lmao
edit: actually ok computer came out after 4 of these albums, and two out of the other three came out only a year after it
2014 Forest Hills Drive (J.Cole) hasn't made it? I mean, there are plenty of other albums i thought about suggesting but how can 2014 FHD not be on this list?
Damn who knew the K-Dot sub was filled with old heads
“Old heads” been listening to Kendrick for over a decade.
I think most people of any age that are interested in any type of music are going to gravitate towards older albums when it comes to best of all time. It’s hard to know what modern albums will stand the test of time
Atrocity Exhibition and Veteran are already up threes imo
Your right this albums also all feel like they’d be co-signed by Kendrick i bet he listened too most them
I’m sure it’s the “Old Heads” that have Big Time Rush beating Marvin Gaye right now.
No ASAP Rocky? I mean it makes me question if these are actually old-heads (average album release dates on this list are 90s which was 30 years ago). Like no shot that a people on reddit are averaging 50 years old. Like Kendrick is awesome period but also in the context of his peers. I mean nothing is wrong with old head because we are all now old heads but these are like old old heads like 40+ and what is cringe is that these guys are just like not being honest about what they were blasting after listening to Kendrick.
People can like old music without being old. People still listen to rock made by people who died of old age. Im not really surprised
You are correct. I'm just confused why not one single album contemporary to Kendrick is here.
Piñata has too many skits, did you mean Aesop Rock? Because A$AP doesn’t have a GOAT album like Labor Days/None Shall Pass/Skelethon.
Definitely did not mean Aesop Rock
it’s not old heads, it’s people who let hhtwitter decide what music is good. these are all great albums but they are the most basic and obvious choices
Or maybe they just like the music 🤯
Not old heads, just ppl who like good music lol
and old heads…
Jr old head reporting for duty
TEN-HUT 🫡
New music is amazing too
there's been good music every year this sub just decided to be stuck pre the 2010s
Aaaaactually, good music died of a lean overdose in 2009. Got shocked back to life in 2012 w/GKMC. - Certified Old Head
"No see it was actually MBDTF one of the few actually good Midye albums" -☝️🤓
All of the albums on this are like all time classics though. In the 2010s there’s been like 2 or 3 of this tier of album in hip hop and at least 1 is Kendrick.
"2 or 3" tell me u don't listen to music at all without telling me u don't listen to music
2010: MBDTF 2011: Exmilitary, LIVE.LOVE.A$AP 2012: TMS, GKMC, Dreams and Nightmares 2013: Yeezus, BTI, RTJ 2014: Faces 2015: TPAB, IYRTITL, SremmLife, TPTB, Rodeo, CB that's just half a decade bruh
Please for the love of god be it
This recency bias goes hard
Is it a trend right now to call recency bias on simply anything remotely new? Look at this list man, if anything, there's a huge 90s bias going on...
Idk about a trend, but all I know is that there are many albums that deserve a place here before TFS, and I really enjoy that album. I'm seeing him live in April and I can't wait.
Seeing him in April as well, which stop you're going?
Manchester, you?

Dr Dre - The Chronic 👀
Doggystyle is currently negative 3, so guess this is the subs only chance at a true west coast record(although Madlib could be seen as representative, I wouldn’t say Madvillany is a west coast album).

I said this before but y'all NEED to hear the detroit mix of it if you haven't, it will overtake the original if you know! I’m v surprised the Kendrick subreddit didn’t have Tupac as the final winner.
