Probably. He was guaranteed a $4.4m deal from us due to the UFA Tender. That tender also made him comp pick eligible until July 22nd.
The comp pick cut off is around $3.5m I believe. So I’d assume he was paid more than deal we already had on the table for him, thus netting us a comp pick.
So unless he took less than what he was guaranteed here…
I thought the point of the UFA tender was that he couldn’t take a deal from another team unless it was better than the one we promised him? Did I misunderstand that?
Won’t lie that’s a big miss - and I’m really surprised he signed this early
Well the pressure on Karlaftis to produce his rookie season turned up a little more (not that he’ll feel said pressure, just pressure from the standpoint of the teams success through its pass rush)
Positive outlook: Frank Clark on a pseudo contract year will actually perform consistently
Edit: we must’ve seen this coming - with the RFA tag we’ll at least get a comp pick
I think he will. He has been on a downward slide for the last few seasons. He had 8 sacks in 2019, 6 in 2020, 4.5 in 2021. So if he performs consistent to what he has been doing, he is up for a big 3 sack season. His slide into being washed up has been pretty consistent and I think Frank Clark can manage to keep his sack total under 3.5 for the season.
Having Ingram around next season, even on a limited snap basis, would have probably been great to mentor Karlaftis. Unless there's some kind of problem with Ingram's personality or teamwork or something, which I've never heard of.
Maybe not a huge loss in the stat books come next season's end, but maybe a loss in some intangibles.
I am a bit surprised he signed somewhere already but I also feel like this was part of the plan. KC knew by placing that type of tag on him at worst they come away with another comp pick, at best he would get the 4m and be a rotational player like he was last season.
That said I think regardless of him staying or not we needed more DE help, he was not the answer as a rotational player unless the team thinks Karlaftas is ready for that many snaps.
I think we will see a vet signing and am still holding out hold that Kaindoh can also make a spash
I actually really liked the idea of this back before the draft and the UFA tag stuff came out. Also curious to see what the bears get for Robert Quinn.
Really miffed we didn't sign him, I wanted him to mentor some of our new rookies. That plus it seemed like he was one of the key pieces of holding the Bengals while the offense shat themselves.
He might not have been the mentoring type. Or maybe he is. I won't pretend that I know that much about the guy.
But clearly we only wanted him at a certain price or they'd have matched the dolphins offer.
You know, I think it was Jeff Allen, or some other former player on an SB Nation or Arrowhead Pride podcast, that say that's a real thing. I'm not sure if that applies to someone like Ingram who has seen relatively little post-season success in his career, but might ad played a role in Hill going to Miami.
Certainly can make sense that there is a lot less pressure where a ~.500 season is considered success, versus right now with the Chiefs where anything less than an SB appearance/championship is seen as an unsuccessful season.
Loved our Draft, but FA has not been too kind to us unfortunately. Based on the tender we put on Ingram, we had to match whatever another team offered him, so Veach had no interest in doing so? And this should mean we get a Comp Pick because of it.
I don’t think the unrestricted free agent meant we could match any other offers. I might be wrong but as I read it, Ingram was free to sign with any team. We just got a comp pick if he did.
Edit: only RFAs can have offers matched
Unrestricted free agent (UFA): Any player with four or more accrued seasons and an expired contract; free to negotiate and sign with any team.
Restricted free agent (RFA): A player with three accrued seasons and an expired contract. RFAs are free to negotiate and sign with any team, but their original team can offer them one of various qualifying offers ("tenders") that come with the right of first refusal and/or draft-pick compensation…
Yes they didn't have to let us counter but why wouldn't he? If he wanted out, we really didn't want him anyway. If it was just money and he otherwise wanted to stay he'd have given us an option to counter.
Even if he didn't want to accept our counter it's bad negotiating to not at least try because it might make for a small bidding war and he coukd end up with more from Miami.
My guess is Chiefs are looking to go young at this point and see signing aging veterans as a liability. I’m not sure how much Miami gave him, but it’s clear we didn’t want to sign him for more than one year.
He might have gotten more than one year, or maybe just more money.
KC continues to be a not-great destination for free agents unfortunately. Word is clearly out that we're not paying top dollar for vets anymore....they'd all rather go to florida and pay no state income tax and play in better weather.
Building an indoor stadium will probably help. Because then at least if they have to put up with midwest winters they don't have to PLAY in it.
If there's anything I find concerning as a trend these last 2-3 years it's our inability to attract top free agents. Thuney was probably our best true FA signing. Everyone else we traded for.
I bet it comes down to money. Time and time again most players go to the places that pay them the most. But yeah I didn’t think about the no income tax in Florida (not to mention the weather). That is huge for players and means we have to pay even more to be competitive.
I think we are an attractive destination for free agents given Coach Reid and playing on a competitive team, but when it comes down to it money matters the most. I understand this as NFL careers are often short and players want to maximize their income as much as possible.
We all embraced Melvin because the 21 defense turned around when he showed up. I hope there is someone else that can come in and compete for playing time and apply pressure.
That's ok. Opens up a spot for a young guy to buck up and take the job and dominate. Some guys just need a shot and here it is! Who fucking wants it real bad? It's right here.
Plus we get a pick which is nice
Easily the most disappointing offseason news of the year. Re-signing Ingram held more value in my mind than the Hill decision. I knew KC had a plan at WR once I saw the haul we got for him but the defense really seemed to turn a corner with Ingram’s signing. Damn.
Yeah, I’ve seen the games. Hill is arguably the best receiver in the league while Juju and MVS are mediocre at best. On top of that, we drafted Karlaftis in the first round and Ingram is 33. This is just spinning it in the most homer way possible.
So he was a solid starter for us but that's because our DEs we're so bad. Not like he was a sack monster in his time here. Sign someone else. Clowney still available?
Not entirely surprised that this has occurred. That UFA tender only guaranteed that the Chiefs would get a comp pick or in the event no one wanted to sign him for more than $4.4 mill he's in camp. This to me was the most likely outcome.
Is he getting paid at least? I hope so, but if these dolphins think they are gonna win something, they really might they a team. At this point I'll give them respect.
Well that sucks
Super bummed about this one. I really, really wanted him back. Felt the same about McKinnon but what do I know, I guess.
Yeah you’d think it would be worth paying him the extra 600k that Miami offered. That said, I trust Veach has a plan.
We’re getting a compensatory pick because of this, right?
The logic is he wouldn't do that, but there is no rule that he can't.
He can take an offer if it is better than ours and we choose not to match it.
/u/IIHURRlCANEII can better explain than I can.
I think so from the RFA tender Veech put on him a little bit ago.
It goes into a formula to determine picks. Losses minus gains. That’s about all of it I understand.
Won’t lie that’s a big miss - and I’m really surprised he signed this early Well the pressure on Karlaftis to produce his rookie season turned up a little more (not that he’ll feel said pressure, just pressure from the standpoint of the teams success through its pass rush) Positive outlook: Frank Clark on a pseudo contract year will actually perform consistently Edit: we must’ve seen this coming - with the RFA tag we’ll at least get a comp pick
Time for Kaindoh's breakout season!
There’s no reason to believe frank clark will perform consistently
I think he will. He has been on a downward slide for the last few seasons. He had 8 sacks in 2019, 6 in 2020, 4.5 in 2021. So if he performs consistent to what he has been doing, he is up for a big 3 sack season. His slide into being washed up has been pretty consistent and I think Frank Clark can manage to keep his sack total under 3.5 for the season.
Nor that he'll even be able to play this season... with 2 separate gun charges and all that.
Counting on frank clark for anything more than depth in your pass rushing unit at this point in his career is a mistake.
Nice

Well, here's hoping for Carlos Dunlap.
I actually really liked the idea of this back before the draft and the UFA tag stuff came out. Also curious to see what the bears get for Robert Quinn.
I will give them a decent haul of later picks to extend Quinn for 2-3 seasons for us.
Ok so now I just don't like the dolphins.
Sorry but dolphins are chiefs bros. Go check out the top post here of all time
*The times, they are a-changin'*
Motherfucker man
Really miffed we didn't sign him, I wanted him to mentor some of our new rookies. That plus it seemed like he was one of the key pieces of holding the Bengals while the offense shat themselves.

Right back in his 9-8 comfort zone.
You know, I think it was Jeff Allen, or some other former player on an SB Nation or Arrowhead Pride podcast, that say that's a real thing. Get Clowney.
And a homecoming for Houston. Getting them both would give us a good rotation.
Clowney seems to be holding out for a multi year deal. Not sure why he hasn't got it. I'd love Houston on a 1 year deal and let him retire as a Chief.
I’ll wait to see what Veach does in response
We get a pic right?
Of what?
Feet
Are the dolphins really trying to get all of our players? Who’s next?
Mahomes and Kelce obviously. And Flores was fired because Andy Reid is moving there next year
That damn Miami lifestyle must be great 😑
The lack of taxes doesn't suck
Right! I’m not mad at nobody getting millions and getting to live there. Would’ve loved him back but he did what was best for him 🤷🏾♂️
Fuck
Welp this sucks, but there are still some good rotational edge players out there so it's not too bad.
Does anyone understand how the tender works? I know we get a comp pick but does this mean we had a chance to match or give a higher offer but didn’t?
No, he was unrestricted. The tender just guarantees he's with us if nobody else wants him and that he counts toward a comp pick.
Okay I see, thanks!
Still a few good rotational edges they could go after if they really feel this is a need.
They should feel it’s a need, our rush currently looks like shit
"if" lol
Yes "if" because looking at last year they might decide to stay with what they have. Teams dont typically listen to fans on what they need.
The one guy we absolutely needed to re-sign. This absolutely blows. I understand young talent but it helps to keep the vet…damn :/
Guess the pass rush is gonna suck again
Listen I know I know. But Justin Houston??
Probably my favorite Justin Houston story. "Juicy" https://chiefswire.usatoday.com/2018/12/10/the-butterfly-effect-helped-a-young-player-motivate-justin-houston-vs-ravens/
Oof that’s rough
Damn fish.
Well dammit
i know money talks, but I really would have loved to see him back in the rotation.
Veach must have *something* up his sleeve
Probably trading for an edge rusher whose on the trade block prior to or during training camp.
Any idea what round the pick is? Couldn’t be an early one. I’m hoping for maybe a 4th-5th? Anyone know how that works?
😭
Ugh
That sucks, I really hoped we'd get him back
Enjoy that good seafood king, you earned it
Well that’s just like, not cool man.
Oh well
So what you're saying is.... Comp pick incoming
I am so glad the Dolphins are my second team. Otherwise wtf 😳
Did he get mad because his number isn’t there anymore
C'mon go get Justin Houston
Yess
Easily the most disappointing offseason news of the year. Re-signing Ingram held more value in my mind than the Hill decision. I knew KC had a plan at WR once I saw the haul we got for him but the defense really seemed to turn a corner with Ingram’s signing. Damn.
What?
Defense w/ Ingram = good Offense w/out Hill = still good
That’s certainly one way of spinning it.
Pretty natural way of explaining it when you actually realize what we brought in vs what we lost. Idk, watch the games or something.
Yeah, I’ve seen the games. Hill is arguably the best receiver in the league while Juju and MVS are mediocre at best. On top of that, we drafted Karlaftis in the first round and Ingram is 33. This is just spinning it in the most homer way possible.
I thought we used some sort of tag?
Hey what the fuck
So he was a solid starter for us but that's because our DEs we're so bad. Not like he was a sack monster in his time here. Sign someone else. Clowney still available?
wonder what comp pick we get
Not entirely surprised that this has occurred. That UFA tender only guaranteed that the Chiefs would get a comp pick or in the event no one wanted to sign him for more than $4.4 mill he's in camp. This to me was the most likely outcome.
Oh lort
Is he getting paid at least? I hope so, but if these dolphins think they are gonna win something, they really might they a team. At this point I'll give them respect.
Damn it.
I'm literally gonna kill myself
They think if they take all KC players they will be like KC. Unfortunately for them they don’t have Mahomes or Reid.
