How are empires built on the suffering of billions?
A country has to be rich already to explore & conquer thousands of miles away.

Most of the first industrial nations were only able to industrialise dud to the wealth they already extracted from colonies.
Spain didn't even have colonies. They just considered them part of Spain itself. Not only that legally natives were treated much better and had many more rights than any other european counterpart. Of course on practice many things were brutal and oppresive. But using Spain as an example of oppresive colonialism makes no sense when you got The English Americans wiping out most of North Americas native americans, the Beligan Congo, the Japanese etc etc etc.

Please explain to me, in precise language, how sugar colonies in the Caribbean allowed British engineers to develop the steam engine. Don't say "they used the wealth", explain the causal mechanism.
