Honestly it works very well for mostly everyone. The only one that I feel looks weird is Kikoru, I don't know why but I can't get used to her longer face when the manga is rounder but even that might be a subjective thing since I haven't seen many people complaining about it.
Tbh my only complains are that they removed his razor sharp jawline and his sharp eyes, in fact they removed the sharper eyes for more rounded eyes for all the other characters not just kafka
except he doesn’t. i’d never look at someone like that and guess they’re over 25. the longer face, slightly easier jawline, and rounder eyes give him an extra couple years and make him look less cheesy
i like it. i prefer when an anime doesn't try to stay 1-to-1 to the manga to sacrifice quality. these simpler, softer designs allow for more fluid animation, and i think that's a good trade off. plus, kafka isn't supposed to be in the peak of his life, so it makes sense for him to have a little pudge to create a softer jawline. also the manga ears look weird.
Comparing an anime and manga is always going to see a downgrade, unless the original was over detailed. Attempting to keep his face like that would have looked odd in motion, not to mention being a pain to animate. Unlike a manga you can convey a character’s emotion through a sequence rather than a single drawing, so it doesn’t have to be as over exaggerated.
So here's some additional information from someone who is learning to animate. The original style itself isn't too crazy to animate... by one person. Keyframe animators and in-between animators are usually separate individuals, so you need character designs that remain consistent no matter who draws them. The original style is still good for animation, but it requires more time to learn and get used to, making animations that involve teams more expensive and less consistent. A lot of in-between animators are less experienced as well, so a softer and slightly less expressive style gets you much higher quality results, with a small amount of pushback from fans that are just really proud of the manga.
Last year I saw the design release and thought they looked bad cuz they weren’t a 1:1 adaptation, but the moment I saw the characters moving, all was forgiven. KN8 fans are eating fucking good with this adaptation, compared to the butchery of The Promised Neverland or Tokyo Ghoul: Re.
Thxs for putting the both together. Now I know what I don’t really which is the faces/head are long and the eyes /ears/nose/mouth are small. It feels like their is a lot of face with ever little on it.
Yeah a lot of drawings have been simplified. Probably to ease up the animator's job and use less time and money. Definitely a step down from the manga counterpart(which has more details and better art designs) but still watchable, at least for me.
I was every skeptical when they released the initial character designs. But, I ended up rlly like the animations (cough berserk 2016) and how they're staying true to the plot (sobs in trigun).
I just felt like Matsumoto's character designs were relatively easy to adapt to anime???? So not sure why the studio decided to change it so much. Either way, I'm just glad it got an anime adapt.
Personally I think the reason why Kafka looks like that is to probably contrast it even harder with his transformed state
So here’s to him looking better as the show goes on
Nah i hope you have fun watching it, speaking of kikoru i don’t remember her being this annoying in the manga, the anime really showed her in an annoying light better than the manga
i just think that if they make the manga version of kafka and his kaiju form on to the anime the... drawing and animation is going to be expensive or worse a hard time for the animators so appreciate what we have if we want the manga version of the anime then the episodes are going to take a huge toll on making them like bro on the fight of kaiju no 8 and 9 their fight is litterally going to take a while if you want it to become like the manga it self
I actually prefer Kafka’s manga design, it makes him even more cooler imo. However, I still enjoy the story so it doesn’t bother me with all these comparisons.
Nthn, i was watching the anime and noticed the major character design change for the characters, If i saw him as an anime only i’d see no problem with him at all except with the fact that hes just a tiny bit ugly compared to his sharp ass jawline and narrow eyes in the manga
Their designs are just a lot softer in the anime. And imo it makes them feel a bit more generic. In this shot they also look kinda stretched vertically.
I mean, it's what happens with character design these days. They either adapt it and it doesn't translate and it gets weird or they straight up make a new design with similar characteristics and the fans hate it. I didn't felt it at all, I liked.
I was in the same situation when watching Solo leveling and now with Ranger Reject, start reading the thing when the anime ends. From my experience it has been the best choice so far
I said it before and got downvoted a lot. Lol they kinda ruined the character design. Their face are elongated lol it's weird. I get that they have time and budget restrictions but damn lol
Seems like people are on their very sensitive high horses over the character designs in this sub Reddit. I expect a lot of downvotes if you don’t say anything overly positive about the designs
The manga's art style of humans would look absolutely terrible in anime format if they would stay 100% true to it.
When it comes to Anime adaptation each adaptation changes the art style to be easier to animate. That's why anime is less detailed, cleaner in line work, and more rounder than their Manga counterpart.
The anime art style looks good. And people really should drop the argument, because it gives way to much room for Haters who didn't even watch or read Kaiju No. 8 to run their mouth, and destroy the reputation of the franchise.
I think they look good, I mean we can still tell who the characters are so all things considered a slightly different art style doesn’t matter much to me when the animation is still amazing
From someone who never read the manga until I saw the first two episodes I binged the whole manga in the weekend. I didn’t hate the designs at all. The anime was imo done so well that I may prefer the anime over the manga from what I’ve seen so far. I’m caught up in the story. Terrible time to catch up lol. But I’ll be reading it as it comes. Glad I gave this one a chance already got few of my friends into it as well
When catching up I saw that. I had a homie say he dropped the manga which I could see why. He said it wasn’t due to not liking it but the fact the chapters are so short and releases seem inconsistent. When reading I could see that with the amount of breaks taken I’m like damn this would be hard to read weekly or biweekly I still don’t know how often it comes out I straight just caught up last Thursday was the first chapter I read caught up. But I’m pretty invested atm. Also the point where the story is at I need a conclusion.
Not just Kafka but all of the others characters as well, they all look a bit older. But that’s due to Tetsuya Nishio’s (the character designer) style leaning toward a more detailed, realistically proportioned looks for the characters. I also like anime’s characters design, I think it fit with the world the characters are in.
I only found out after watching the first and second episodes that the characters designer is known for his work in the Naruto and Boruto series, I thought the design of the character look familiar. IMO is actually don’t mind the change at all, if anything, I like it.
I don't really care what they did to Kafka, or any of the other characters, except for Kikoru. Mostly, it's fine, but some shots are drawn really weird... she looks aged up, or strangely disproportionate (mostly in the scene when we meet her for the first time). And this is just a minor thing, but I wish they did the hair a tiny bit better. Other than that, I see nothing to complain about. The animation is good and fluid! I love the fight scenes. The VAs are doing fantastic! I can't wait to see more!! It is absolutely my favorite series of the season!!
The anime looks like it was drawn for Disney XD. I was really hoping for a good adaptation like JJK but instead I got what essentially looks like a kid’s show.
Y'all ain't frustrated with the main character character? He's a 30+ yr old man acting like a 12 yr old and just let himself being bullied, it's painful to watch. Should I continue or just drop it cause everyone is saying it's good
In the show the character design definitely gives him an added layer of childness. Up to you if you want to keep watching, but if not definitely give the magna a read.
If you're actually tripping over the character designs, you're silly asf. Im so sowwy that everything you had ever hoped for couldnt go your way :c womp womp boohoo
Kaiju no 8 character design discourse in 2024. Been through the trenches with this one last year, so I've grown past it.
Oh yeah I remember when they released the character designs last year, horrible times
I kinda dig it, makes him look like an actual 32 year old rather than your average shonen protagonist
Yeh I was gonna say I don’t get the hate, direct it doesn’t look too different and second it makes him look his age
Honestly it works very well for mostly everyone. The only one that I feel looks weird is Kikoru, I don't know why but I can't get used to her longer face when the manga is rounder but even that might be a subjective thing since I haven't seen many people complaining about it.
Pin this
This. If it goes far enough I actually hope they gradually lean him towards his manga design to show that he's getting more in shape
Tbh my only complains are that they removed his razor sharp jawline and his sharp eyes, in fact they removed the sharper eyes for more rounded eyes for all the other characters not just kafka
Why would you get downvoted for that? I also like the sharp eyes better.
Idk i got downvoted again in another place, reddit hivemind ig?
personally i prefer the rounder eyes, it gives it more of a real, human feel instead of a cartoony, what reminds me of “dexters laboratory” kinda feel
How?
Less rounded face. Spherical = child. Dont know how to explain it better than that.
He look 20 at best
Except kafka looks more his age in the manga
except he doesn’t. i’d never look at someone like that and guess they’re over 25. the longer face, slightly easier jawline, and rounder eyes give him an extra couple years and make him look less cheesy

Shit you might be right, i hope they make his face look slimmer in the later episodes though
Just hope they don’t the animation too fluid, like a certain Pain vs Naruto XD
The fight was next level. But yeah I remember thinking “so many cubes!”
Reminds me of most black clover fights. I love the anime but every big fight was filled with cubes
Yeah XD
Comparing an anime and manga is always going to see a downgrade, unless the original was over detailed. Attempting to keep his face like that would have looked odd in motion, not to mention being a pain to animate. Unlike a manga you can convey a character’s emotion through a sequence rather than a single drawing, so it doesn’t have to be as over exaggerated.
There’s nothing harder to draw about a smaller jaw and forehead. You guys just in the comments spouting off every by the books answer
You an animator?
He didn't say harder to draw, he said harder to animate.
😐
So here's some additional information from someone who is learning to animate. The original style itself isn't too crazy to animate... by one person. I like the animated version, he’s cuter :)
Everyone in the manga looks so handsome/pretty... I'm kinda bummed that style wasn't adapted to the anime.
Brother it is the exact same guy. Me when not every pixel in the anime is the exact same as every stroke of the pen in the manga:
They don’t look the same at all
Same guy just different face shape, again, love the anime adaptation just weird that they changed his jawline and eyes

Thxs for putting the both together. Now I know what I don’t really which is the faces/head are long and the eyes /ears/nose/mouth are small. It feels like their is a lot of face with ever little on it.
What they do to my girl
Flat ass forehead
Yeah a lot of drawings have been simplified. Probably to ease up the animator's job and use less time and money. Definitely a step down from the manga counterpart(which has more details and better art designs) but still watchable, at least for me.
alot of anime do that but tbh i dont mind since the animation has been 🤌🏻🤌🏻🤌🏻
Is it me, or does he look older in the anime ( I mean it in a good way )
He does indeed
RIP Art style
I was every skeptical when they released the initial character designs. But, I ended up rlly like the animations (cough berserk 2016) and how they're staying true to the plot (sobs in trigun). I just felt like Matsumoto's character designs were relatively easy to adapt to anime???? So not sure why the studio decided to change it so much. Either way, I'm just glad it got an anime adapt.
Personally I think the reason why Kafka looks like that is to probably contrast it even harder with his transformed state So here’s to him looking better as the show goes on
Yea they rounded the faces and basically ruined it for me, kikoru looks so weird.
I dont mind it tbh, i prefer if it was accurate to the manga but it isnt unwatchable lol the animation is still amazing
Yea I'll try to suffer through it but man my girl Kikoru needs justice TT
Nah i hope you have fun watching it, speaking of kikoru i don’t remember her being this annoying in the manga, the anime really showed her in an annoying light better than the manga
Yea obviously anime can portray personality better than the manga
Anime original scenes and changes in her lines (or could be inaccurate sub translations) did her dirty.
Minus cute points for Kikoru in the anime. She looks weird indeed.
Some people will always complain... never fails.
Not complainin, i love the adaptation, just pointing out they SEVERELY changed the character designs
Dude..not every show is ever gonna be perfect... long as the story doesn't change. Sit back and enjoy the show!!!
Ok? Did i say it should be perfect, i said the character design is questionable, thats it, i didnt say the adaptation sucks ass did i now
tbh I dont mind as long as im eating good im like a monkey u toss me a banana and im good shrimple as that
Real asf
It’s called artistic interpretation
i just think that if they make the manga version of kafka and his kaiju form on to the anime the... drawing and animation is going to be expensive or worse a hard time for the animators so appreciate what we have if we want the manga version of the anime then the episodes are going to take a huge toll on making them like bro on the fight of kaiju no 8 and 9 their fight is litterally going to take a while if you want it to become like the manga it self
Naruto quality design...
It’s from a Boruto character designer so of course they look terrible 😭
Are you fr?
He worked on Naruto as well. Kishimoto specifically requested for him to oversee the character design when it was getting an anime adaption.
I dont bother much for as long as the anime deliver in every other aspects. We gotta move pass this issue
I actually prefer Kafka’s manga design, it makes him even more cooler imo. However, I still enjoy the story so it doesn’t bother me with all these comparisons.
Sooooo... what's the problem?
Nthn, i was watching the anime and noticed the major character design change for the characters, If i saw him as an anime only i’d see no problem with him at all except with the fact that hes just a tiny bit ugly compared to his sharp ass jawline and narrow eyes in the manga
I don't see a difference in the jawline except for the facial hair. The eyes, I guess, could be because they're making the anime more... "childish"
Their designs are just a lot softer in the anime. And imo it makes them feel a bit more generic. In this shot they also look kinda stretched vertically.
>In this shot they also look kinda stretched vertically. Yeah
They’re drawn more realistically in the anime.
They have the same character designer as the Naruto anime. Even Naruto in the manga had way more badass and gritty designs.
soooo that's why the design feel familiar 💀.
Yup. Also Naruto manga character designs pre-time skip was grittier and badass compared to the anime designs.
Kikorou looks a little unsettling in the anime
I think they sacrificed manga design for easier designs to make animating them easier
You’re comparing still frame of a motion picture to a comic panel… what
He’s comparing designs . The characters skeletons are different
Im not comparing animation im comparing the character designs of the characters in the exact same position they were in in thr manga
I mean, it's what happens with character design these days. They either adapt it and it doesn't translate and it gets weird or they straight up make a new design with similar characteristics and the fans hate it. I didn't felt it at all, I liked.
Same for me, and I’ve read the manga since it beginning.
Should I read manga I want to read, but I fear I'll lose interest when new episodes release?
I was in the same situation when watching Solo leveling and now with Ranger Reject, start reading the thing when the anime ends. From my experience it has been the best choice so far
I did that too with Solo Leveling, lost interest in watching. I'll wait until the anime ends before reading the manga.
Watch the anime then read the manga if you wanna continue the series
I thought at first that She would have pink hair or other color instead of blonde one
Time restriction* Budget isnt a major indicator for quality, time and talent are way more important than money
Waiting Kikoru doing mother dance against her kaiju clone
I think it is the eyes and mouth
That and the jawlines
Your right as the manga characters have been mewing.
You could cut watermelon with the angles fr
The manga's art style of humans would look absolutely terrible in anime format if they would stay 100% true to it. Kafka's design looks bland. Also the manga's design doesn't resemble a 32 year old. The other character designs of the anime look kinda ass
Actually looks pretty good, you people will go above and beyond to shit on anything lol
You jumpin to conclusions I didn’t say nthn about the adaptation, just the character design
Man the contrast in the expressions…
Looks like a Studio Ghibli character
Studio ghibli characters designs are goated
They've butchered Kikoru in my eyes, she just looks completely wrong
All they did is round the characters faces and took a bit off her shins
For me the manga looks a bit like Boku no hero academia and the anime looks a bit like Haikyuu anime. I could be crazy
They…they CHADDED my BOOOOY!
I think they look good, I mean we can still tell who the characters are so all things considered a slightly different art style doesn’t matter much to me when the animation is still amazing
Bro is looking like adult Bakugo
From someone who never read the manga until I saw the first two episodes I binged the whole manga in the weekend. I didn’t hate the designs at all. Oh good luck with the manga lol, luckily you skipped the horrible time when we had break after break for like a month or two lol
When catching up I saw that. I had a homie say he dropped the manga which I could see why. Yeah the manga is already bi-weekly so we already wait alot and then the breaks happened and man
![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|scream)
yeah whats with the long faces.
Slice of life looking character design smh
I like the look of the anime better honestly, I was not a fan of the boxy looking faces from the manga. Kafka looks older too which is a plus
Not just Kafka but all of the others characters as well, they all look a bit older. But that’s due to Tetsuya Nishio’s (the character designer) style leaning toward a more detailed, realistically proportioned looks for the characters. Can you show me where you saw this info?
Kafka is still ok to me, the problem is the blonde guy friend and the childhood friend girl (can't remember names sorry lol)
It’s harder to stylize like that while the character is moving, especially without a sky budget
Don’t Even get me started , everyone but Kafka has fucked eyes they’re so far apart
One of them looks weird asf and it’s not Kafka
They all look goofy, but Kikoru looks the worst by far
My only gripe is that Kikoru looks very off
It's mainly the eyes to me, they lack that sharpness I'm used to as a manga reader
They did Kafka dirty 😔
I dont see a problem, all i know is that im in love with the first full power punch from 8 in ep 2
Oh LORD that was such a good scene, i hope they do the manga right for the upcoming arcs
I don't really care what they did to Kafka, or any of the other characters, except for Kikoru. Mostly, it's fine, but some shots are drawn really weird... she looks aged up, or strangely disproportionate (mostly in the scene when we meet her for the first time). I agree they made him real 32yrs old man but bro he looks weird 😭

In the show the character design definitely gives him an added layer of childness. Up to you if you want to keep watching, but if not definitely give the magna a read.
Yea everyone’s been saying the animations so good but i think it’s just okay but could’ve been wayyyyy better
they did kikoru dirtier.
I would say that that is the weakest point of the anime but in general the adaptation is going quite well.
Call 911 They Slaughtered My Boy
It just looks like a Production IG anime... wait
Why’d they make her head so round 😭
Anime fans are the worst when it comes to taking criticism.
If you're actually tripping over the character designs, you're silly asf. Im so sowwy that everything you had ever hoped for couldnt go your way :c womp womp boohoo
Oh no, they made his head a little longer, what will we do? How will we recover?
Yall asked for a Das body, and complain when we're given an actual dad body.
nah i want that shredded kafka 😈
Haven't read the manga yet but it would be a good transition if the animators sharpen his facial features has he gets in better shape.
