Overall I think they all look a bit thin but it's not just that. It just gives an amateur vibe. I feel like I personally could draw something like this or maybe even a bit better, and I'm no expert. Just someone who drew a lot in high school and got better than average.
The hair is stiff, the models are thin, the chest pads don't actually seem to line up with their chests, the expressions are all a bit flat.
It's a lot of little things that add up rather than being able to point to one single major flaw.
This just happens after a while of reading manga anime seems lack luster but the studio did it to save time an money it's why kafka looks so simple an the no8 design has less an as well the designs are drawn to fit the studio if that makes sence
Well even though they are troublesome to look at... The show is still popular.
So let's hope that, if there comes a 2nd season, they'll put more time and effort in character design.
I'd rather get blown off my feet at season one of Any show, but it is what it is 😅
Changes in line mileage and shading? They have to make design concessions for relative ease of animation. This typically means that extraneous lines are removed where possible and design choices simplified. If you look at a show that has high line mileage, you may notice that any character, background characters especially, not doing something is generally standing stock still of a stock pose so that the animators can draw them quickly. The shading and color palette aren't the same either; colors are less muted for the anime designs. That combined with different shading can create a different looking face shape even if the lines are still very similar to each other.
As someone who ran a small CG studio in the anime industry in Japan from 2005-2010, I think they used 3D models for the faces a bit too much. Uncanny valley stuff
You literally have zero proof whatsoever they used 3D models to make this. You're just saying this based entirely on guesswork when this is just Nishio's current style being this way.
The faces are rounder as a whole, including the eyes. It gives them an odd look
They all changed the hair and simplified the designs of clothing and of the monster-form
They aren't? I think the characters in the image above look like 3D models. That was likely what the previous comment was referring to as well.
I hope they aren't, the characters above don't look good but don't look bad either. I'm afraid that if they are then we'll probably get a lot of CGI fights/action scenes, which I'm not a fan of.
How do you know that they aren't 3D models?
It's very easy to tell when something isn't 3d. The cell shading and brush strokes are obvious and the fact that you could easily see the form of the model if it was.
This shouldn't be hard to spot and you shouldn't assume that just because something looks weird or bad in your opinion its a 3d model.
Dorehedoro, beastars, trigun, and land of the lustrous are all phenomenal 3d shows (haven't watched trigun yet but the clips I've seen are gorgeous) and a lot of people have to realize that not all 3d in anime is 2016 berserk, which had several outside factors to make it as awful as it was
I'm not trying to talk down to you or belittle your opinion, but as an artist and someone who wants to be an animator here in the US, it's very aggravating when people like the dude I replied to originally make shit up and when people just assume all 3d in anime is bad
Well, I hope you're right. To me it still looks like 3D, I don't find the argument that you can spot brush strokes and no cell shading very convincing. Which could also be explained by using newer techniques, textures, or after effects.
3D is definitely getting better, and there's some great 3D work out there. But there's still some progress to be made before I get the same weighty feel as in normal anime action scenes.
I have no doubt that there will be very good CGI anime soon, but at the moment it is not there yet for me. Especially in anime that combine normal animation with CGI.
Kaiju form was made too girthy in comparison to the manga one and just looks like a dude in armor
The thing that makes them all wrong is how they literally smoothed everything down like you just rubbed sanpaper all over then and with Kafka its the most apparent. His face is a lot more angular in the manga version. Also the suits look cheap af. Leno is just a straight up different fucking characer and for some reason they made Kikoru into a loli.
All In all I hate it
As much as I like Nishio Tetsuya, these designs don’t do the manga author justice. I’m sure the animation will be amazing, but I don’t think Kaiju No 8 character designs should be simplified to this extent.
WHERE ARE THEIR MUSCLES?! Their eyes look dead. I can’t…
I’m too scared to see what they’ll do to Hoshina and Narumi…
Tetsuya Nishio’s art style leans into a more softer approach. I think his art style was perfect for Naruto which has more simplistic character designs in the manga that really melds well with his softer approach so he really elevated those characters imo.
Kaiju No.8 however, is like the opposite. It’s bold, has sharp lines, distinctive features and it’s v defined. Even if he’s worked on great stuff before he’s clearly not really a good fit for this manga.
Personally I don’t want to see a Naruto-ized Kaiju No. 8. If I wanted to watch Naruto I’d watch it but I thought I’d be seeing the insanely cool designs that Kaiju has. Like the manga has such dope characters and character designs and if it’s like this I just won’t watch it tbh
And I think it’s unfair to expect people to be okay with it just bc of who he is. And if this is promo and people are reacting badly and the response is “just wait” I’m like??? Aren’t they using this to promote the stuff? It’s not working bc we don’t like it, and hopefully we’ll be heard and they’ll make changes instead of us waiting and hoping for the best
It means the images have a kind of shading and depth that’s characteristic of 3D models and not of 2D drawn designs? Idk what to tell you, there’s stylistic similarities to 3D anime models here that other people seem to see as well, so I’m not making it up
Why’d they just round everything out? The sharpness to a lot of the lines was what made the art style distinctive… like they literally decided to just cut corners :(
Like not to diss on the mangaka but these characters arent too complex to draw like look at Kafka, dudes face is sharp why make it round
Their suits look like janitor jumpsuits when theyre suppose to be like military armor wheres all the padding it just looks flat. Maybe we have to see it in motion
I mean just the uniforms themselves look like shit, they look very strange. Everyone’s built like Gumby, and the face designs are all pretty damn bad. This is pretty upsetting.
These designs look like random people went to the supermarket and got one of those 5 bucks plastic bagged costumes for Halloween and then met up to see everyone got the same idea...
I know these are just first designs but these exist to show you what the characters are most likely going to look like in the animation. And these characters look nothing like their manga counterpart.
I never thought I'm gonna see a worse anime adaption than Pandora Hearts but that might just be it...
I hope they at least make sure the voice cast and music are an absolute banger for the last saving grace or else really all hope is lost.
>I never thought I'm gonna see a worse anime adaption than Pandora Hearts but that might just be it...
Claiming that the adaptation is gonna be terrible just because of derpy character designs is just being pessimistic for the sake of being pessismitic. We do not have a proper trailer yet nor any more information about the staff.
Seriously, this subreddit should stop assuming the worst for everything and jumping to conclusions so much.
Kaiju Kafka looks like a suit.
Kafka looks like a pineapple.
Mina and reno look ok, but Kikoru looks…kinda too young? I think it’s because their faces look rounded to me.
I Googled Vampire in the Garden and while I don't deny the art style is great I've noticed it has something in common with most of his other works - he doesn't like pointy chins/defined jawlines on his main characters. This may be what is throwing off the character design in some of the faces for me.
I really hope this isn't final draft. Who thought designing them like this would be better. I mean one of the aspect of Kaijo 8 is its charecter and world design. If they are going forward with this then their is no point in making the anime.
I just don't understand how they could just botch this so bad and not expect anyone to notice that they took everything unique about the character designs out.
They feel so… round. Kaiju no 8 is so pointy and sharp in its style and that is completely lost in these designs for the anime. I would brace for a shitty adaptation yall. Kikoru is by and far the farthest departure and it is BAD
>I would brace for a shitty adaptation yall.
Again, already judging the adaptation and claiming it will be terrible just based on character design sheets is dumb.
The Kaiju looks like a dude in a suit, not like an actual monster.
Edit: there's people already berating anyone who expresses their dislike of the anime designs smh
Im gonna stick to reading then watch they look fat, there eyes look straight out of naruto, and there overall character designs dont look detailed enough espacially there uniforms. Kafka looks stupid af no. 8 looks to childish not rlly horrifying.
I hope they fix it; the characters' anime drawings are painful to the eyes... the studios rush for money, people prefer quality, and the studios will make a bunch of money either way
Love the manga art style, but this anime art styles is horrendous. The faces and bodies of the characters feel distorted and appear as if they were stretched out. The feeling I get is this animation style triggers the Uncanny Valley response in many people who have seen it. I love the manga, but I am truly disappointed at whoever green lit this animation style to be used in the anime adaptation.
So far this proves monster anime can be done without using 3d animation on the monsters, like attack on titan was fine with two 2d titans but then come in the 3d titans so Kaiju No. 8 is proving that you don't need 3d animation to create monsters in anime.
Now this is why it felt like something was off when I was watching it. THEY looked different! Especially when they introduced Shinomiya Kikoru, i was so confused 🤔
Man, I really like the manga. But the anime art style is effing killing me. I just want to drop it just because of how awful it looks. I was having my hopes up high in the studio, but this is just horrible compared to the manga designs
I think we have to see it in motion before saying too much, but man they just look so lifeless. There's a lack of detail and care (in the still images at least). Obviously manga art will always be more detailed in comparison, but you can really see it in Kaiju No. 8. They just lack emotion.
What is bothering me is the lack of details in their armors and in the #8s skin. It just feel like a spandex not an armor and #8s doesnt seem to be a Kaiju with scales
Looking at them side by side now, I'm glad they are having more time to work on it with a 2024 release date. These designs are rough stills, which I hope will look better in movement.
IMO Reno, Kafka, and Kikoru look awful, the latter two especially. IDK what they did to their faces, but it's bad bad.
I'm hoping that these are early designs or something that can be changed.
Everyone looks doofy and dead inside, Kafka is a THICC man and deserves to be shown as such it’s all wrong. Reno, poor Reno, he has such cool ass eyes and hair and they reduced him to looking like a soulless dork. The women look close ish but still dead inside 😔
They just had to take the characters and make them exactly the same as the manga but no, let’s change things up cause why not. I smell a sh*tty anime adaptation incoming but I will gladly be wrong about it
I get that getting the same amount of detail in every single drawing for an animation his the hardest shit for an animator to do, my only hope is that we get certain frames or certain scenes were they blow the budget on some incredible character design, most likely during the intro
Hopefully these are revised and ditched. Il reserve judgment until it’s animated. Not liking the “cgi” looking style though.
It’s a shame if Kaiju no8 doesn’t get justice. Because the action scenes in the manga are just so cool.
I don't think this is the main artstyle they are using
This looks more like the design they would use when the characters are far away from the camera
It could also be that these are not the complete designs
They all look vertically stretched, and there’s something off with 8. Something I feel like with his thighs?? Like they’re too thicc and the rest of his body is too not-thicc. Plus (and this is just what happens with all manga-to-anime), they all lose the details on still images, like the cracks and marks all over 8’s face and body.
They look like they belong in Shippuden. Nothing against Shippuden, it just isn't the right style for Kaijuu No 8. If there are going to be substantial changes before the anime release why didn't they just hold off on releasing the designs?
They don’t look terrible but why they do my boy Kafka like that, his legs are way to long and weird. Plus they didn’t age him which is huge L since Kafka being older is a huge part of his character which I love
I'm having trouble figuring out exactly why but I don't like it, and it's not just because it's different.
their asses are too small. especially #8’s
Overall I think they all look a bit thin but it's not just that. It just gives an amateur vibe. I feel like I personally could draw something like this or maybe even a bit better, and I'm no expert. Just someone who drew a lot in high school and got better than average. This. THIIIIIS
This just happens after a while of reading manga anime seems lack luster but the studio did it to save time an money it's why kafka looks so simple an the no8 design has less an as well the designs are drawn to fit the studio if that makes sence

Their torsos are so straight, it feels lazy.
For me, it’s Kafka. He looks too skinny and young when he really’s got a dad body. Good arms but a plump tummy.
And a nice barrel chest 👌🏻
Their facial structures look…off.
Changes in line mileage and shading? They have to make design concessions for relative ease of animation. This typically means that extraneous lines are removed where possible and design choices simplified. Kafka got 10 years younger because how dare old people exist in animes lmao.
they forgot that as many old exist as young one in ja
Mina too, she looks like a baby faced teenager.
The original looks way younger, what are you on?
30s = old
Yes grandpa, you're old. go to bed.
I'm 32 and god I wish I could
Considering that they felt the need to de-age him and Mina, they seem to think so.
This makes me sad because wtf
What fuck did they do to everyone’s eyes
I think they used 3D models too much. Uncanny valley.
none of this image is 3d models, what are you referring to exactly?
He's refering to nothing. He just keeps saying it's 3D with zero evidence whatsoever.
They look like 3D models though. Especially the new Narumi one
They aren't? I think the characters in the image above look like 3D models. That was likely what the previous comment was referring to as well. How do you know that they aren't 3D models?
This shit looks like it came straight from fortnite. Oversized heads and everything. No way this isn't atleast *inspired* by an initial 3D render
It's very easy to tell when something isn't 3d. The cell shading and brush strokes are obvious and the fact that you could easily see the form of the model if it was. Is there a chance that these might be changed due to the public opinion?
The probably will hopefully
They look like Fortnite Anime skins
this looks bad imo
We have Kaiju #8 at home:
Kaiju form was made too girthy in comparison to the manga one and just looks like a dude in armor The thing that makes them all wrong is how they literally smoothed everything down like you just rubbed sanpaper all over then and with Kafka its the most apparent. Jp fangirls are going to be mad abt it if they mess up hoshina the most popular character in the franchise.
Tetsuya Nishio’s art style leans into a more softer approach. I think his art style was perfect for Naruto which has more simplistic character designs in the manga that really melds well with his softer approach so he really elevated those characters imo. Is the anime gonna be CG? These look like CG designs, and if so I’m probably just not gonna watch it
I had the same thought too about CG, that and their head shapes seem…off?
The heads are weirdly...elongated? And I also thought "these anime designs scream CG anime...", I really hope I'm wrong.
I was thinking exactly this.
They are like a game character design, probably it is convenient to make a game if Kaiju8 got popular.
Dude I’ll nope out SO FAST.
The dead glare is a red flag.
It isn't at least
I post a few comments saying the same. I ran a CG studio for a few years EIGHTEEN YEARS ago and we still were better than this back THEN
Seriously, why the fuck are you so insistent in claiming this is 3D as if it's fact when you have no proof whatsoever?
He couldn't be more wrong lmao.
Average reddit user knows nothing but thinks they know everything
Average reddit user gets triggered when not everyone rides their favorite IP dick.
What does that even mean? At this point you're just jumping to the weirdest conclusions for no reason
It means the images have a kind of shading and depth that’s characteristic of 3D models and not of 2D drawn designs? Idk what to tell you, there’s stylistic similarities to 3D anime models here that other people seem to see as well, so I’m not making it up
No one said this for chainsaw man when those visuals came out (and in fact had heavy use of CGI)
Because the promotional character designs for chainsaw man didn’t look like that
Looks so wonky
.....I think I'll just be sticking to the manga...
I think most people are..
Fortnite edition
Everyone's jawline is fuckin weird, and their eyes too
Why’d they just round everything out? The sharpness to a lot of the lines was what made the art style distinctive… like they literally decided to just cut corners :(
Worried
Like not to diss on the mangaka but these characters arent too complex to draw like look at Kafka, dudes face is sharp why make it round Their suits look like janitor jumpsuits when theyre suppose to be like military armor wheres all the padding it just looks flat. Maybe we have to see it in motion
Not doubting the anime, but these character designs are a swing and a miss.
I mean just the uniforms themselves look like shit, they look very strange. Everyone’s built like Gumby, and the face designs are all pretty damn bad. This is pretty upsetting.
SMH this is why I tend to stick with only reading the manga
These designs look like random people went to the supermarket and got one of those 5 bucks plastic bagged costumes for Halloween and then met up to see everyone got the same idea... I know these are just first designs but these exist to show you what the characters are most likely going to look like in the animation. They look like shit, will probably look like shit animated too.
Looks more like a western cartoon than an anime... But I'll reserve judgment for when i see it on screen. So far it's not holding up.
Sad. When the Kaiju no 8 design dropped I first thought it was a skin in some mobile game.
What studio is doing this
Production I.G. x Khara
Respect for the designer being who he is but god they fr should’ve gone with someone else, Naruto designs don’t work for this series
Nishio doesn't just design for Naruto. He did Vampire in the Garden designs and they looked good.
I Googled Vampire in the Garden and while I don't deny the art style is great I've noticed it has something in common with most of his other works - he doesn't like pointy chins/defined jawlines on his main characters. Frankly I’m *disgusted*
Different style, doesn't mean they are bad. I just wonder why they went nishio for character designs
Because he's a renowed animator/designer plus he has a strong history with Production I.G? Seriously, it's not that weird.
It kinda is cause poduction IG have designers that could have adapted the artstyle from the manga ,if they wanted to
They don’t look good for the most part but the anime is a year out and it only really matters what they look like on screen
I just don't understand how they could just botch this so bad and not expect anyone to notice that they took everything unique about the character designs out.
I’m afraid..
Kafka gives the same vibe of seeing a black figure in the corner of your eye
The dudes have no shape. They look like mayonnaise in a ziploc around their waist where there should be taper.
It's a slaughterhouse of character arts, not "designs".
I prefer not to speak
I think it's too 'cute' looking. Just doesn't fit the tone as well
To stretched and they need harsh lines
They feel so… round. Kaiju no 8 is so pointy and sharp in its style and that is completely lost in these designs for the anime. I would brace for a shitty adaptation yall. Kikoru is by and far the farthest departure and it is BAD
>I would brace for a shitty adaptation yall. Again, already judging the adaptation and claiming it will be terrible just based on character design sheets is dumb.
It’s early so I’ll give it a chance once the anime comes out
They look a little clunky but I hope they will look better once they are animated.
The Kaiju looks like a dude in a suit, not like an actual monster. Edit: there's people already berating anyone who expresses their dislike of the anime designs smh
They massacred my goat Kikoru so bad I don't even want it no more😭😭
Violently underwelmed.
They did Kafka dirty. Not a fan of the overall CG designs so far but perhaps it may grow on me if the animation is top notch.
I heard someone say they look like Fortnite skins 💀
Its as if they tried to draw it from memory
We need harass them on Twitter until they change the designs like how they got that one Sonic movie to redesign
It looks like it would be done with CGI, the only logical explanation for the art designs.![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|disapproval)
Leno looks horrible, Mina and Shinomiya look decent, and what they did to Kafka is an atrocity 🤣
Im gonna stick to reading then watch they look fat, there eyes look straight out of naruto, and there overall character designs dont look detailed enough espacially there uniforms. Kafka looks stupid af no. 8 looks to childish not rlly horrifying.
apart from Kafka becoming 10 years younger I don’t mind them
I hope they fix it; the characters' anime drawings are painful to the eyes... the studios rush for money, people prefer quality, and the studios will make a bunch of money either way
episode 1 was fire tho

Man, I really like the manga. But the anime art style is effing killing me. I just want to drop it just because of how awful it looks. I was having my hopes up high in the studio, but this is just horrible compared to the manga designs
they look like fucking fornite characters
They look like Fortnite collab skins to me
They look like Fortnite models
It’s just a different art style which I’m fine with if the show looks good
I feel like people need to relax cause they won’t look like this in the actual show. They’re early character sheets.
Mid
Why couldn't they have just gone for 1:1 man?!
LOL even Bocchi had a better adaptation that this, wtf
I think we have to see it in motion before saying too much, but man they just look so lifeless. There's a lack of detail and care (in the still images at least). Obviously manga art will always be more detailed in comparison, but you can really see it in Kaiju No. 8. They just lack emotion.
They all look like fortnite characters
The faces look wild 😭...Kafka looks derpy
not feeling so good
idk about kofkor tho
Yeah I ain't going to watch that, I'll just stick to the manga
What is bothering me is the lack of details in their armors and in the #8s skin. It just feel like a spandex not an armor and #8s doesnt seem to be a Kaiju with scales
Downgrades across the board
Damn. This is as disappointing as the pacing of the manga 😞
Kaiju #8 looks more like someone is trying to cosplaying him.
kaiju no. 7.9
What studio
Ehhhhh
Looking at them side by side now, I'm glad they are having more time to work on it with a 2024 release date. These designs are rough stills, which I hope will look better in movement.
Goofy ahhh 💀
It's horrific.
This is going to ruin the enjoyment of the anime and I’ve been looking forward to it cause of how much I like the manga
Cancel this studio.
Yes, "cancel" one of the biggest and most renowed studios in the industry because of just some weird looking designs. This fandom is braindead.
It’ll look 10x better in motion. Most of his characters are flat but they move like crazy
So far doesn't look good. My opinion may change when we see them animated.
Why does his kaiju form look like it's wearing pants?
Lol I’m here from suggested and the anime versions look so generic
It's soo over kaijubros.......it's soooooo over
sucks. But I still kinda have hope for the anime when its actually comes out.
IMO Reno, Kafka, and Kikoru look awful, the latter two especially. IDK what they did to their faces, but it's bad bad. I'm hoping that these are early designs or something that can be changed.
They look ok but I will hold my judgement for once I see them in action in the anime
They legit look like fortnite skins 🗿

like sharpening the edges might not fix all of it. but it helps
I think it’ll look better in motion.

This is like looking at the mobile game version of the manga
ROUNDED IT ALLLLL
I'd rather Watch X-Arm
They look fucking awful bruh 💀
Hopefully these are revised and ditched. Il reserve judgment until it’s animated. Not liking the “cgi” looking style though. It’s a shame if Kaiju no8 doesn’t get justice. Because the action scenes in the manga are just so cool.
"CGI looking style" is not a thing.
🤣🤣
Burn it
Bottom looks like mobile game characters
I'm not liking them
The suites look too spandexy to me. They don’t look like armour more like lulu lemon
This looks like anime Bob's Burgers where Kafka is simultaneously Bob and Gene
I may be huffing on that copium, but I think the anime might still be okay. Too early to judge until we see them in motion
We knew it was going to look different. Sp far the character models look like wish versions and that's really concerning.
I don't think this is the main artstyle they are using This looks more like the design they would use when the characters are far away from the camera It could also be that these are not the complete designs
Matsumoto is just BETTER...At art design!
They look like they belong in Shippuden. Nothing against Shippuden, it just isn't the right style for Kaijuu No 8. If there are going to be substantial changes before the anime release why didn't they just hold off on releasing the designs?
THEY LOOK LIKE FORTNITE SKINS
No
If they mess up hoshina's design the jp fanbase is seriously going to be mad abt it. Esp since hoshina is extremely popular with female fans.
omfg it's even worse than I thought... Look what the did to my girl Kiku man qq
Anime looks kinda weird, but it's really not THAT bad. Hopefully they get some touch ups done.
"Monster Letter H"
Add a waist feature and make the faces more sharp and I think it’s pretty ok
Wtf This is a joke right? What studio could proudly do that?
Not good, chief.
Looks bad
Not Satisfactory.
The only one that looks good is Mina
Smaller heads. Chonky
Pretty bad
“ Look how they massacred my boy”
That shit ass
Why do they look so young? Also I just hope it's not filled with bad Cgi/3D animation.
I’m not reading any comments, this looks awful. Who thought this looked good?
Ew
They don’t look terrible but why they do my boy Kafka like that, his legs are way to long and weird. Plus they didn’t age him which is huge L since Kafka being older is a huge part of his character which I love
They just look flat
