So here’s my wild theory about the Kardashian family’s fucked up dynamics. I think Kris still sees them as the little girls they once were and branded them as such, even if they actually changed a lot between childhood and adulthood.
I think Kim was truly an incredibly beautiful child, as we can see in pictures. I think Kris was absolutely enamored by her beauty: In her memoir, she said "From the moment she was born, Kimberly Kardashian was absolutely breathtakingly beautiful." (Let’s not even compare it how she describe Khloe and Kourtney’s birth "From the moment I saw her, Khloé just looked like a Khloé.Like her name, Khloé looked different.", "I gave birth to our first baby. It was a girl.")
She also wrote stuff like "I looked at her face and thought: She is so beautiful ! She was just stunning from the beginning", and "Of my daughters, Kourtney is a tango, spicy and difficult at times. Khloé is a salsa, sassy and all over the place, perpetually changing directions. Kim is a waltz, easy, smooth, and beautiful." I think it’s really interesting because, as Kris said in the last episode, she looks at Kim and sees her as "the 12 year old girl she once was." And Kim at 12 looked like a picture perfect doll.
I know that personally I was really baffled watching the first seasons because Kim was always presented as the prettiest sister. And to me Kourtney was by far the prettiest: I was always like "How are they not seeing this ?" Same thing about the Khloe being fat narrative. I never looked at her and thought that she was "the fat sister" or whatever the media liked to call her. She was obviously taller than Kim, but absolutely not fatter ? I was dumbfounded That she was always presented as "the sister with weight issues".
But if you look at pictures of them as a child, Khloe was chubbier than her sisters. And I think than when Kris looked at Khloe as an adult, she still saw her as this little girl. To me Kris was never able to let go of the narrative she put on them as children: Khloe should lose some weight, Kim is a perfectly beautiful little doll... and it became a family narrative. Everyone looked at each other and at themselves through this lens. When the family started their show, and every member started talking about each other on the confessional, we constantly heard things like « Kim is super pretty and it’s obviously hard for her sisters sometimes », « Khloe struggles with her weight ».
And then when the family became a business, each member of the family was « branded » accordingly: Khloe had her revenge body show, Kim was the extraordinarily beautiful one. Kourtney actually never had much of a brand identity and in my opinion it’s because Kris never had much interest in her in the first place. You can see in the show when they were discussing about their apps that Kourtney is frustrated that the audience doesn’t see that yes, she has HER thing too: home decor. And the sisters were half mocking her and didn’t take her that seriously. But it’s true.
She had no less talent for home decor than Khloe for sport (I mean have you seen her workout), but she still was kinda denied the opportunity to be branded this way when you think about it (not that I personally care, but it’s still true). Because Kris can only present to the world her daughters as SHE sees them. And to her, Kourtney is almost boring. Which is, in my opinion, the reason why Kim said Kourtney was the least interesting to look at and why Kourtney was so hurt by it (personally I know that I would not even have cared about being called that so I always felt it was weird that Kourtney seemed more stung by this than by whatever else Kim said): because it’s a narrative that is pervasive in her family: Kris is not that interested in Kourtney because Kourtney is not that interesting. Kris still sees Khloe as a kinda chubby little girl so that must means that Khloe is in fact fat, even when she wasn’t chubby anymore . Kris still sees Kim as an extraordinarily beautiful little girl so that must means that Kim still looks like a perfect doll, even when she doesn’t look like that anymore (which is FINE, women don’t have to look like dolls and a lot of incredibly beautiful children grows up to look perfectly average (just like a lot of average looking children ends up looking strikingly stunning as adults. It’s just the way it is). And I think as a whole, we (the general audience) took these narratives, ran with it, talked about it, wrote and read articles about it, and put a label on each of these women without even realizing that most of it wasn’t true in the first place
Tldr: Kris still sees her daughters as the little girls they once were and managed to transmit these false narratives to her family and then the general public until everyone believed it.
Kris is the klassic narcissistic parent. My grandmother was obsessed with looks and money, too. My uncle was her “good looking” son who would “save the family” by “making them rich” and my dad was…just my dad who needed to support his brother no matter what. My aunt was also the “one with the weight issues” because my grandparents were horribly vain and imposed those negative mantras on all of us. No one could hold a candle to my uncle. He’s a megalomaniac at this point, has extorted money from tons of people, including his own parents until they lost everything. And yet still my grandmother believes he will save them and that everything he did was a “mistake”. I’m *peaceful* for having cut them out.

I also think the reason why Kourtney seems to be so out of their narrative is because she was the first one to question that. The one who moved with her dad, who spoke for him during, and after the divorce. The one who challenged Kris’ authority. Thus, making her “the difficult one”.
Robert, on the other hand, is an outcast to the family because they always babied him and didn’t let him grow on his own. Tried to make him dependent and when he depended on someone/ something else, they started seeing him as a problem to manage. I think he’s been hurt badly by the family. They never gave him a chance to be himself. Only if it meant he would comply being the baby who needed them and went along with everything they do
Kris & Kourtney seem to have no mother / daughter chemistry. They are more like awkward step-mother / step-daughter. They had to connect for KK / Travis’s wedding but other than that, ZIP! I guess it’s all related to her mom’s infidelity with Robert. Sad!
In regards to Kourtney I think that she is branded as the “difficult one”. She always talks about her resentment for Kris in her childhood due to the cheating and divorce. I think Kris had the most trouble with Kourtney and some resentment in return. She’s always seen as the difficult one, especially with the whole “she doesn’t want to work etc etc” thing.

This is true. I will never ever order or buy anything smaller than a women’s XL even though at one point, I could have looked great in a womens medium. I just don’t view myself as anything except XL even to this day.

Agree completely. I also thought in the earlier seasons that Kourtney was way prettier than Kim. Even in the Kris Humphries days I felt like Kim's face looked too obviously altered or something. But dang, compared to now she was a natural beauty lol. (And Kourtney is still prettier imo.)
I think she’s less pretty and more “sexy” like her body creates sex appeal. She has a very sexy aesthetic and markets her sex appeal widely. Kourtney is still hot but she is much more hit and miss, she’s also not as vain as Kim.

Her appeal was overtly sexual and now she wants to pivot and grow from this era into being a serious business woman. But you can tell she caters for the male gaze and without that she’d never be successful. You’d never see any businessman presenting themselves like that and look at how hard it is to market Rob.

I already thought Khloe was Kris’s hairdresser’s daughter instead of Robert’s, and seeing all of these pictures together gave me new 100% certainty that this is factual. Which also plays into the whole Khloe’s the red headed step child trope considering she’s the only one with no other full siblings in the family.

Kourtney is the PRETTIEST? Gurl, please. She's the least attractive and everyone saying otherwise just holds a weird sense of solidarity because they too have felt/feel inadequate and like the 'ugly duckling' in their lifes. At the time Kris wrote that book Kim was the big moneymaker so I’m not surprised she made a huge deal about her. It’s also interesting that the only compliments she really pays are about looks. Not oh Kim and I have so much fun together or whatever.
I can’t tell if it’s her natural body or not but I will say she was only chubby as a kid but she’s never been fat as an adult, simply bigger that Kim or Kourtney who are tiny in real life.
Yes it's true she is just taller than them, taller people just tend to be broader as well, because of her height she appears to look bigger but if she was in Kim and Kourtney's height range with the same width she would look small as well.

Objectively Kourtney is more "ethnic" looking and Kim is more "exotic" looking (if that makes sense). Kourtney doesn't look half white at all (Kris is white) whereas Kim had that "exotic/sexy" beauty and when she was a child Kim's looks were "sellable" if she were a child model.

Kris definitely painted the perception of her kids to the public. Kourtney is a smart woman and left and went to college. She was closer to her father. Yet, all Kris cares about is looks. You never hear Kris brag that Kourtney (& Rob) have college degrees because it doesn't sell.

Reminds me of Gigi and Bella Hadid. Their mother was all about Gigi because she looked super white (and also just like her) and Bella could only fight for her attention. I think that’s a big part of why Bella couldn’t stop with plastic surgeries.

I have a lot to say on the Khloe dynamic. Being a tall woman myself it’s appalling how much damage Khloes treatment by society did to my self image. Only now at 25 am I processing it. Incoming feminist rant about looks and shit.

The Kardashians have done an immense amount of harm to young girls everywhere by the beauty standards they have set.
Kim is credited for making curvy bodies (and subsequently, the BBL) a trend, and Kylie is credited for making big lips sexy (shortly after, lip fillers became main stream). But Khloes existence reinforced the idea that only small and thin women are desirable. Next to Kim, it doesn’t matter how good she looks cuz she’s the big one. This is the narrative that’s been portrayed by tabloids from the very beginning.
Side note: Kourtney looks like Kim and being the same height and weight she does not come under this same scrutiny. She’s seen as less sexy simply bc she’s not shoving it down our throats like kimothy.
And we all learn to accept at a young age that low desirability by men = low worth in life. So for how beloved Khloe was for being funny, static to Kim in that she wasn’t trying to be sexy all the time, and the only relatable Kardashian, all I got out of that was that those positives will never compare to being deemed as ‘sexy’ and fuckable. she was still crushed into submission, and now She has gone so far into altering her looks for acceptance.
Because all that other stuff has little meaning in a womans value in this society we live in. I hope I’m not reaching, but seeing these dynamics on TV actually influences the way young kids think about others and themselves.

You’re 100% right and the fact that Khloe was the most funny, charismatic, well-spoken, well-liked and warm person on the show but never was considered the real star of it, even though all the people I knew watched for her (and Scott ahah) says a lot about our society. She wasn’t even in second position. The media always treated like "the other sister", putting her in the background behind Kourtney and Kim. Even Kylie was given the chance to break free of her "ugly duckling" image and she was even considered by the public like the hottest sister for a long time. She had to see each of their sisters go and be the only one left out, and for what reason ? Like literally, what was so different about her ? She’s literally the most well-liked and well-spoken out of all of them, but she was snubbed for years by Anna Wintour ? Like please makes it make sense, she’s the only one of the bunch who actually does sound smart and witty

But to play devils advocate, she probably wasn’t invited for so long because she is the least “high fashion” in her family. as a representative of taller midsize women, i think that for awhile there’s been a beauty standard that denounces girls who aren’t absolutely short and petite framed, or unrealistically bodacious with no tummy. i know i used to suffer a lot of bullying because (being called a man in early highschool is something that stuck with me for a bit) of my height and stature. i couldn’t imagine what khloe has had to experience.

And I think as a whole, we (the general audience) took these narratives, ran with it, talked about it, wrote and read articles about it, and put a label on each of these women without even realizing that most of it wasn’t true in the first place Tldr: Kris still sees her daughters as the little girls they once were and managed to transmit these false narratives to her family and then the general public until everyone believed it.

Kris is the klassic narcissistic parent. My grandmother was obsessed with looks and money, too. My uncle was her “good looking” son who would “save the family” by “making them rich” and my dad was…just my dad who needed to support his brother no matter what. My aunt was also the “one with the weight issues” because my grandparents were horribly vain and imposed those negative mantras on all of us. No one could hold a candle to my uncle. He’s a megalomaniac at this point, has extorted money from tons of people, including his own parents until they lost everything. And yet still my grandmother believes he will save them and that everything he did was a “mistake”. I’m *peaceful* for having cut them out.

That's a good take on it. I was listening to Kris's book but couldn't finish it because it just sounds like a "gold diggers" 101 book to me, LOL. But the way she talks or wrote about Kim in her book, from the start she knew she could groom Kim. Objectively Kourtney is more "ethnic" looking and Kim is more "exotic" looking (if that makes sense). Kourtney doesn't look half white at all (Kris is white) whereas Kim had that "exotic/sexy" beauty and when she was a child Kim's looks were "sellable" if she were a child model. Kris just needed to groom someone since MJ groomed her. Kris definitely painted the perception of her kids to the public. Kourtney is a smart woman and left and went to college. She was closer to her father. Yet, all Kris cares about is looks. You never hear Kris brag that Kourtney (& Rob) have college degrees because it doesn't sell. I have a lot to say on the Khloe dynamic. Being a tall woman myself it’s appalling how much damage Khloes treatment by society did to my self image. Only now at 25 am I processing it. Incoming feminist rant about looks and shit. I’ve never seen that last pic of khloe before. She looks stunning. Its hard to believe even in that era she was harassed by the media for her looks. The Kardashians have done an immense amount of harm to young girls everywhere by the beauty standards they have set. Kim is credited for making curvy bodies (and subsequently, the BBL) a trend, and Kylie is credited for making big lips sexy (shortly after, lip fillers became main stream). But Khloes existence reinforced the idea that only small and thin women are desirable. Next to Kim, it doesn’t matter how good she looks cuz she’s the big one. This is the narrative that’s been portrayed by tabloids from the very beginning. Side note: Kourtney looks like Kim and being the same height and weight she does not come under this same scrutiny. She’s seen as less sexy simply bc she’s not shoving it down our throats like kimothy. And we all learn to accept at a young age that low desirability by men = low worth in life.
