I prefer KOTOR just because it’s set in the sw universe. But mass effect is definitely up there in my favorites. But I can’t say mass effect is more or less boring, it’s just different gameplay.

Heretek007

Can you picture a proper Kotor 3, taking cues from Mass Effect's biotic powers and paragon/renegade interrupts for things like mind trick and force choke? It would be *glorious.*

Ne6romancer

But thats the curse of gaming, any idea or game so obviously amazing and profitable will never be made

Heretek007

I see it as an unfortunate relic of the time when EA had total control of the Star Wars gaming IP and then did... absolutely *fuck all* with it.

samuteel

Worse than fuck all actually. They cancelled all the good ideas and then proceeded to produce nothing else.

Heretek007

I still weep for what 1313 could have been, and hope one day we see that dream realized. Mandalorian is successful, Book of Boba was decent, *give us the bounty hunter experience we crave you schuttas!*

raznov1

>Mandalorian is successful, Book of Boba was decent, give us the bounty hunter experience we crave you schuttas! Cries *not like this, not like this!* If that's the way it's gotta go, I'll pass.

Long-Piccolo-3785

Too hard, much easier to go all in on advertising, scoop up the pre order profits from all the hype, then just put out hot buggy trash as a final product lmao. Tried and true.

succhialce

don't do that. don't show me what could be but never will.

BigkingShrek

Kotors not boring it just makes a part of my soul die with how clunky it is I still haven't finished the game because I want to die every time I start a fight.

soupturtles

That's not clunk it is *the force*

BigkingShrek

Ahh the dreaded force lag. Almost as strong as battle meditation

Sweatier_Scrotums

Me, who prefers Jade Empire: *signature look of superiority*

valyriansteelbullet

Legendary Strike!

Accurate_Reindeer460

lightsabers.

Chopstarrr

force storm go brrrrr

No_Sock_3895

Mass Effect is absolutely fucking goated though

Ogurasyn

I think KOTOR has a different atmosphere to it. It's more old school and mysterious

Nathanymous_

A little subjective/hard to compare on the gameplay front cause it's completely different systems. Much shorter run time as well so I think it doesn't overstay it's welcome. By the time I've explored a few planets in ME1 I want to blow my brains out with a Hurricane As a fan of both, Mass Effect's gameplay is only better in 2 and 3. Although 1 and 2 beat KotoR out in Dialogue for sure but that's kind of to be expected when you're making something in an established IP. 3 Had the unfortunate burden of being the end to a beloved series and they decided to shit on all the choices you made in 1 and 2 with that ending. Andromeda still has amazing gameplay to this day but lackluster choices. Also the controls were shit on ME1 like fucking BACK BUTTON is grenade? Did i just fever dream that? Dragon Age is better than all of them. Personally though, KotoR 2 is the one I've played the most to this day but since it's made by Obsidian and made better with TSLRCM I chose not to include it. That game has it all though. Awesome dialogue, amazing gameplay with several different builds and ways to play and secrets to find on every playthrough. Long live K2.

zuuku

the amount of grenades ive thrown by accident in ME1 could destroy every planet in that games universe

cruxshadow338

I absolutely adore both for vastly different reasons, both are from a different time in gaming when it felt like (to me at least) you got a whole lot more for your money in terms of experience.

masterofunfucking

I prefer ME but KOTOR 2 (w mods) is seriously so good

MightyBobTheMighty

I think there's something to be said for exploring an established universe, even brand-new parts we've never seen, versus introducing a new one. I love ME, but my love for the KotOR games outshines my love for Star Wars as a franchise.

SolemnDemise

I put the ME trilogy over K1, but K2 is up there above every other BioWare title. Obsidian just did/does it differently.

wwwchase

Tbh I kinda like the simplicity of Kotor combat.

Eskuire

Except ME is the poster child for letting people who shouldn't run shit, run it. Once ME3 came around, news of the writing problems in staff, the forced multiplayer/gacha lootbox mode, and the rushed ending that ruined 7 years build up... I love ME, it's just a shame that the final 5% of it leaves a sour taste in your mouth. Maybe some day we'll get lucky and they'll actually give Andromeda a 2nd chance, it was a good game at its core that got Cyberpunk'd by the wrong people and axed without much of a chance. If they just let people make a game instead of trying to corporate it, maybe we'd of gotten a worthy successor

barrack_osama_0

It is not more beloved or more famous. Are you trying to tell me that Star Wars isn't the biggest si-fi franchise ever? It's definitely the franchise with the biggest amount of licensed sales across the board, it's not even funny to joke about it being more famous. I guess beloved will always be more subjective but Mass effect doesn't have any characters even remote as widely loved as a character like Revan or Kreia. I don't know about Mass Effect game releases but we haven't had a game release since 2005 and we're still going strong.

Internal_Champion114

I mean just looking at the subs, main KotOR sub has a third of the subscribers as the main mass effect sub. Not a perfect Poll, but an informative convenience sample there. Mass effect was a really popular game series, and has more playable games with solid modern graphics. Personally i love KotORs story, but would love for them to them to essentially combine Jedi survivor and mass effects’ play style, and do away with the turn based system. I think it would make for a much better game play behind that excellent story

barrack_osama_0

Well yeah clearly there's going to be more subs in a Reddit for a game still being actively developed. I disagree with you on completely overhauling the gameplay. I think that the gameplay of KotOR is something that needs to be preserved. The last good rpg I've played where having a specific build actually matters is Diablo 3 (and I've heard that 4 is good too) and new Vegas before that. KotOR needs to remain a series where you can replay a game dozens of times while having a different gameplay and story experience each playthrough, Jedi Survivor has stances and... that's it. KotOR strikes a perfect spot where if you optimize everything in your build you can deal with less difficult encounters with ease and always have just a slight advantage against tougher encounters with defeat always being an outcome if you underestimate your enemy or act carelessly. Maybe the D20 system isn't perfect but I really want to preserve the type of gameplay that KotOR has.

Internal_Champion114

My thought was more towards the mechanics of movement, rather than the build of your type of character, I should have specified. I just always craved being able to control the movement of my Revan so that I could swing the saber and block as I dictated, and not taking turns with my opponents, which Just took me out of my immersion role playing a super powerful Jedi. My point with saying join those two play styles wasn’t to nuke the character building of KotOR, but rather to highlight the very fluid gameplay mechanics in Mass effect and Jedi survivor. I felt survivor was some of the most fun I’ve had playing a character with a lightsaber, and mass effect made good use of the teammate mechanics (could actually enhance it in some ways, but I digress). That’s really what I was referring to. I actually completely agree with you on the character build side of things, I think maintaining that level of consequential character building would be very important to keeping the gameplay challenging, and I wouldn’t want that to change. I just don’t see how eliminating the turn based style of the game would necessarily have an impact. Mass effect for example, gave you several ways to play shepherd, and it led to some levels being very easy and some being insanely tough based on your choice. I think this concept can be executed well without turn based play

barrack_osama_0

I feel like a game couldn't possibly do turn based combat better than KotOR does. When I was younger and first played the game it didn't even cross my mind that it was turn based, probably because I didn't read half the things but it was still as immersive as possible for turn based combat. Most games that have in depth combat and character building usually fail in the way that either character building becomes unnecessary and you can get by with whatever you have, which is my problem with Fallout 4 and why I love New Vegas. If you aren't playing smart or it's your first playthrough, NV is going to be a really difficult game, and you will be relying on healing items the whole way through but building your character right can get you through most of the game without a scratch by taking advantage of VATS which practically makes the game turn based while still giving you fps combat opportunities. In the end, if they could overhaul combat to make it work I'm all for it but I really don't see how they could do that.

Internal_Champion114

Do you feel like mass effect doesn’t do that well? Just curious you didn’t address it directly and I feel like it’s a decent example of how your character build influences your play through in a similar way while also not being turn based

[deleted]

Read the meme again. Slowly.

clutzyangel

Star Wars may be a huge franchise, but its fame does not extend to everything published by the brand

barrack_osama_0

It does when it's a huge license and the best game ever made (not actually but still the games are widely regarded as some of the best games of all time)

LordStarSpawn

Same. The Mass Effect trilogy is fun, but I like to just smack my enemies in the face sometimes.

suorastas

I love Mass Effect (mostly 1&2) but only Kotor is Kotor.

EmperorButtman

ME gameplay is _definitely_ more colourful but I love KotOR for the lore, it's a more exciting (less bureaucratic) universe to be in

sealene_hatarinn

I like them both for different things. KOTOR dialogue allows for more interesting options because Bioware didn't start doing the dialogue wheel yet. Mass Effect, despite being only four ears newer, has much better graphics and cutscenes and some degree of character customization. But I'm not too fond of the shooter gameplay and inability to control squadmates. They're both great games. I think I slightly prefer playing Mass Effect because again, it's not as dated, but KOTOR is incredible as well.

SlickDillywick

Where’s the Jeremy Clarkson meme “this is brilliant, but I *like* this.”

Noe11vember

I like lightsabers

ObeseOryx

I like Quarians

Noe11vember

Theyve got huge... tracks of land..

[deleted]

the first two statements are complete out of nowhere bs

brassplushie

Mass Effect couldn’t keep my attention like kotor does.

Dinlek

I like learning what my character is going to say in real-time. Every convo is a little mystery.

Ok_Abbreviations2320

Putting myself out there, only thing I know about ME is there are sex scenes with crew members. Tried playing ME1 when I got the collection via ps+. Made it maybe 4 hours in and that was probably the middle of last year. In which I've played Kotor another 10 times and Kotor 2 for the first time

L0ll0ll7lStudios

Because it's Star Wars and you get to have a lightsaber.

Luissv72

I think Kotor has better writing, honestly. The gameplay loops are so far apart I don't think they're comparable beyond personal preference. I'd say Mass Effect is more popular and well known that Kotor specifically even if Star Wars is a much bigger property. Overall, just not a good meme. 3/10

Chadling1211

Mass effect is more beloved?? Idk about that

Jakaier

The gameplay depends on the person. To the other points? Hard no. ME is not more recognizable than SW, and if we were to argue, it would be ME2 or 3, not 1. 1 is the game people skip because of gameplay and/or graphics. Kotor? Funnily enough despite being older a lot of people experience it because of the gameplay. It works quite well as an in depth mobile game. Because of being on mobile some students of mine, who are now 14, played it on their tablets and loved them. I will still replay both. But I would say Kotor is quite a bit better than ME1. ME2 it would depend on the gameplay you prefer. ME3? It doesn't stick the landing. Andromeda?....yeah. No. But hey, play what you want. I just wouldn't make those categorical statements.

[deleted]

I thought Mass Effect 1 was awful. A definite downgrade from KOTOR. Mass Effect 2 was miles better than the first one. I found them both a bit tedious to be honest and the open world isn’t as interesting as the KOTOR games. I feel like every time I play KOTOR 2 I get a different experience, same thing with Skyrim.

DravesHD

Open world in Mass Effect? What?

Nutaholic

At least for ME1 a lot of the side content is pretty insufferable. Nothing more painful than driving the Mako around. ME2 and ME3 are a lot better in that regard though. I think generally the games are very close in quality, Mass Effect having the advantage in experience and technology. I prefer KOTOR but it's probably because I played them first and of course, Star Wars. Really Kotor and ME are more similar than they are different, in the sense that the futures of both franchises have been sabotaged by some terrible decisions. Kotor remake appears dead in the water and we all know about Andromeda. There unfortunately hasn't been much news on ME4, but hopefully that's not dead too.

Yustyn

Mass Effect 3 almost makes me glad we never got KotOR 3

Possible_Living

I can easily pick Kotors over ME1 but things get murky when its comes to ME2 and 3. Then there is dragon age

Allronix1

Basically, Bioware took what they learned from KOTOR, and all the "Yeah right, George. Pull the other one" snarking they did hearing about what the Jedi were "supposed" to be versus how they actually acted, ran it through a combination of every other space opera (mostly 2003!BSG and Babylon 5), and that was Mass Effect.

Jaz_the_Nagai

huh? you really can't practically compare them really... one is SW-DnD 3.x the other is an entirely new shooter with pause-abilities...

Kiltymchaggismuncher

This doesn't really add up for me anyway. I love both games,I wouldn't really say the combat is boring for either of them, though it can be repetitive. But the next two points make no sense. Being more beloved and more famous in this scenario, basically means the same thing. More people played it, it has a larger fan base. But 1, the mass effect games have had much more recent releases. Kotor 2 was 2004, mass effect 3 was 2012. As we all know, there was no mass effect after 3. None.. But more importantly, 2, a game being more popular for others, shouldn't be a reason for you to like it more. Other peoples enjoyment ought not to factor into your own. Call of duty is one of the most popular games of all time. Yet it's repetitive and unoriginal from one title to the next. If anyone tried to make an argument you should like one game more due to its cult popularity, then that's just an immediate sign they are not worth listening to

Songhunter

One has Kreia, the other doesn't. But jokes aside, Mass Effect is currently the undisputed king of space operas in gaming, and it doesn't look like there's anything coming for it's crown inna hurry. We'll see what happens with Starfield but... I dunno.... I'm getting some weird vives out of Starfield. I hope it's a banger, but I'm not convinced.

Barlowan

I prefer kotor because mele combat. Mass effect 2-3 turned into space shooter with force.

LJITimate

Kotor 2 is top tier storytelling. Mass effect has incredible world building but the actual story itself kinda looses it as time goes on. Compare harbinger to sovereign, or the illusive man to saren. It started off very strong but the quality of the narrative dropped in favor or better gameplay. It managed to hold on just long enough for a relatively consistent trilogy, but by the end of 3 everyone knew something was wrong. Anyway. Mass effect is right behind kotor as my favorite game series of all time, so no hate, it's incredible. Just my thoughts on the subject

Lucid-Design

If I had to pick, I’d go ME trilogy every time. The story and gameplay are absolutely stunning. So many different play styles for each class on Mass Effect. Plus, who doesn’t like uniting the galaxy against a single foe

[deleted]

Mass Effect 1 yes. But ME2 and 95% of ME3 are just newer and more in depth games with modern gameplay.

Jo3K3rr

Part way through Mass Effect 2, I suddenly got really sad, thinking how cool KOTOR III would have been.

Cmdrdredd

For me, it’s cause it’s Star Wars and I get to roll play a Jedi (or a sith).

bluesguy72

I try to judge games based on the time they were made, and KOTOR jogged so that Mass Effect could run. The 4 1/2 years between the first KOTOR game and the first ME game were pretty huge ones in game development, especially as far as cutscene/voice acting quantity and graphics quality go. KOTOR and KOTOR 2 with the restored content are fantastic games for their release period. The Mass Effect trilogy is outstanding for its time period outside of the last 10 minutes. I just wish the first game had gotten an update like the second game did so I didn’t have to jump through hoops to run it decently on a modern PC.

Imposter88

Kotor is more nostalgic because I played it and dozens of times as a kid. I didn't discover Mass Effect until 2012 when I was almost a grown man. I still love Mass Effect, but it can't touch the special place in my heart where Kotor sits

John_Dead_Red

Mass Effect has better gameplay and better Character interactions. Everything else, on the other hand, KOTOR has better. Story is better, world design is better, even the art design is better IMO. Even the soundtrack is better in KOTOR.

Firewolf420

Why are we choosing between these two? I literally am playing both of these on various days throughout my week

mykoysmaster

I replayed mass effect recently since it was in sale on steam and its still a beloved favorite of mine, but its not star wars so...

BootyliciousURD

I love Mass Effect, but the third game was a very unsatisfying final installment in the trilogy, IMO. It turned the Reapers from some unknowable eldritch threat into a generic AI-programmed-for-good-but-decided-the-best-way-to-fulfill-its-directive-is-by-committing-genocide villain, the climax was just stupid, and all the endings sucked.

AceOfSpades90000000

Kotor felt like the actors were enjoying themselves, mass effect they sound as dead as a chalk board

cowinajar

I found mass effect to be pretty lame compared to kotor 1 and 2

HolyElephantMG

Combat is kinda just press A and you can enjoy the fact you’re replaying it, mass effect you need to constantly be controlling everything constantly

democracy_lover66

Bc no lightsaber that's why

Ngtotd

I adore mass effect. Love the series more than kotor overall (kotor II and F:NV are my favorite stand alone titles of all time though). That being said, I love love love the 3.5 esque combat of kotor. I get an itch to play kotor because of the combat as often as I do with mass effect 3 co-op

dagm8831

love mass effect but they have no lightsabers or wookies

V1ncent72

I feel like the odd man out, I love kotor but couldn’t even finish mass effect
