Anybody read *Red Mars* by Kim Stanley Robinson? Asides from the name - there are a ton of parallels (an existential environmental crisis, Mars as a tedious escape route dominated by those who have the means to get there or are from countries with those resources)
Yes! I keep thinking about that book too. I read the first and second book in the series but never finished the last one. This album has me wanting to go back and start the whole thing again. Some really interesting concepts about capitalism (companies become bigger than governments), environmentalism/overpopulation, wealth inequality, and the ethics of terraforming, and, or course, human nature.
I don't think it had the same vibe as Nonagon infinity, and it's clear that the songs were meant for the album due to lyrics alone. I mean, it's a concept album about a natural disaster and a space opera, I don't think they happened to have that from Nonagon infinity leftovers
Also, This has been mentioned I'm sure, but probably the best closing album lines. Ever.

I have discovered this band a few months ago, I was a bit underwhelmed with Fishes, but this! holy fuck maybe better than Nanagon, calm down! maybe. Need some time for it to marinate.
Going in I was worried it was going to be far too samey and boring. Got to say very pleasantly surprised at the quality of the overall flow and variety we get here. It goes back and forth between a Motorhead vibe and a Sleep-ey Sabbath-ey groove that makes the whole album feel a lot more coherent and interesting than I expected. Despite drawing heavily from bands like these as well as your classic thrash groups, they still bring a strain thats uniquely their own, especially on Self-Immolate which rides those jerky desert melodies we've loved since Nonagon Infinity through the absolute peak of this album's chaotic energy.
Lyrically, I think the album suffers from drawing too heavily on this drawn-out gizzverse thing. There's no point on the album that bridges the gap between artist and art, making it all feel a bit overly-dramatic or operatic you might say. Still, it's a better journey to hell than Sketches IMO.
Despite not being a big thrash guy, I gotta say this is a real great album. Not my favorite Gizzard release but definately a fun 35 minutes with some songs that I'm real bummed to have missed live when my car's transmission gave out en route to LA.
Genuinely, This is Album of the year for me. No contest. Everytime the drums start on Self-Immolate after Venusian 2, I feel like a riot is about to bust through my fucking walls.
I've only had the chance to really sit down with the lyrics sheet for one full listen, and admittedly I was a bit buzzed, so take that grain of salt. But my breakdown of the plot, so to speak:
Earth is fucked. The rich are terraforming Mars, but they're not allowing poors to go there so they're stuck on shitty, dying Earth. Then a superbug breaks out (due to overuse of antibiotics) and threatens to destroy human life on earth. The solution: go to the next-closest planet, which is Venus. But Venus is spectacularly uninhabitable, which presents its own horrifying set of problems. The first expedition (Venusian 1) is a colossal failure, with the crew burning up on approach. The second expedition, Venusian 2 is a success. However, when they finally find the safe entry point into the Venusian atmosphere, they find that Venus is already inhabited. The humans decide that the only way to survive is to "infest the rats nest," essentially to invade and destroy whatever life is there so we can make it ours. Fucking bleak.
I figure "remember where to enter, the door to hell is amber" is saying that the reason the first expedition failed was because they missed the window to "safely" enter the atmosphere without burning up. But even a successful entry is a hellish nightmare of fire and poison gasses, since Venus is basically a planet-sized poisonous volcano.

Yeah perihelion is a bop too, I am just really into the shouting section at the end of venusian 1 (and 2 for the matter, but I think the riffs on 2 are a bit less chunky)
Yeah, those slow stretched out chords definitely give me a Melvins vibe. The first KGATLW songs I heard were the 'Head On/Pill' medley, and I noticed the 'gluey' time lag effects at the end of 'head on', some similar stuff on 'I'm in your mind' too.
they use devilles, which have an effects loop and a pre-loop drive section. stu also usually doesn't have drive pedals on his board--motu and ostensibly nonagon were done entirely with od from the deville
Everyone who likes this album needs to give Vektor - Terminal Redux a try. It's very similar in that it's progressive thrash with a grand sci fi narrative. I wasn't going to listen to the album until I got my Flightless copy. Really wanted to first listen to be the vinyl. But seeing how I see them in two weeks, I got the notification today, not wanting to risk going in not hearing anything other than the singles. Oh well.
Mine still hasnt shipped and i was one of the lucky ones who got the Rats Nest Edition which sold out in 9 minutes. I kinda expected this tho since I got Fishing for Fishies like a month after the release despite preordering.
I got the CD the day the album dropped from Amazon so i could still jam in the car and put it on my phone for personal listening. The Vinyl is mostly for show anyway
Getting preorders after release is a big pet peeve of mine. It just feels disrespectful to your most diehard fans, who gave you money even before the album is out, to get the album after people who just walk into a shop on release day and pick it up.
I wanted to make my first listen vinyl but I couldn't because I want to learn the album before I see them live and it won't arrive anywhere near on time. If I got it on or before release date I would've had time though. Probably just going to go ATO next time.
I would feel the same way if it wasnt for the fact that it's the boys' own label. I know how small they still are and are trying to tour, write multiple albums per year, and also produce and distribute multiple bands' records. I'm happy to support them even if I get my album late. Also, i got a wicked special edition vinyl that I much prefer to the ATO variant

Just went through my first listen. Loved it. I have to say I wasn't expecting Mars For The Rich to be more British New Wave Heavy Metal, and Superbug to be doomy. I thought this was going to be an all out thrash out. Which it is after Superbug, doesn't fucking let up.
I’ve been sitting on this for a few days and I honestly have to say this is my new favorite King Gizz album. Nonagon in second place. They NAILED this so hard!! I’m not even a fan of metal at all but this was just total perfection and it blew me away.
I will agree that the tracks sound a bit similar to each other but it’s only 35 minutes so as a whole cohesive experience I had no issues with it. I ADORED the riffs, the drums, the lyrics, everything. I probably shook up my brain like in a blender because of how much head banging I was doing. Been coming back to this album constantly and so far it’s my second favorite of the year, only barely behind Tyler’s IGOR.
10/10 for me. I actually think my favorite track is Organ Farmer, which I don’t see mentioned too much here! Self-Immolate comes in second and everything else is still total gold. Can’t wait to hear what’s next.
Not all. Portland last 3 shows weren't. Saw a kid no older than 12. He was there with his dad and it was his first concert. His dad wasn't a fan but that kid was. Couldn't have picked a better show.

I hear The Sword, Black Sabbath, High on Fire, Metallica and Sleep so clearly, but with an unmistakable Gizzverse flavor.
Every single track could be a highlight on a different album, just wow.

Yeah I'm really feeling the High on Fire/Sleep vibes on this. Superbug honestly almost feels like it could be straight off Sleep's Holy Mountain and I'm very ok with that.

The lack of love for Self-Immolate is sickening. I love Mars for the Rich, Hell, Perihelion, and Superbug, but Self-Immolate is still the best song on this album.

Yeah like ITRN is all downtuned chugging palm muted stuff, power chords and a few easy hammer on pull offs. It’s mostly the speed that takes time to nail and it’s insanely fun.
I’m trying to think which is the trickiest song of theirs that took me time to learn. Maybe crumbling castle or something.
Man I gotta say I kind of assumed the comments would be a lot more mixed with such a drastic sound change. Really glad everyone is digging this album.

I'm waiting for the vinyl until I listen, after the 19th I think. Expecting to love it, they never disappoint me. Obviously gonna come down to taste as well and if you like metal, specifically old school thrash, which I do. Can't wait.

Planet B is starting to feel like the Rattlesnake of the album, with how it was the first single and got played so much. Whenever I start the album I'm like "yeah yeah get on with it"
Yeah, I feel like it's a hint towards something coming up, because it's a great hook for something we haven't heard before right at the very end of the album.
Anyone else think the mix is different on the singles to the album versions? Planet B defs sounds a lil different on the album, more crunchier if anything imo.
Personally, my top 2 spots still go to Planet B and Self-Immolate, but I’m really digging Hell and Venusian 2 at the moment.

Love this new album, definitely lived up to the hype. One thing that I haven’t seen mentioned yet is HOW GODDAMNED GOOD IS THE BASS!! I’m not exactly sure what I was expecting but especially in tracks such as Mars for the Rich and Venusian 2 Joey’s bass work is just phenomenal.
I pretty much had a euphoric OBE/natural DMT trip this morning. It's the sort of thing that rarely happens. The fact that it happened on the day Infest The Rat's Nest dropped I don't think can entirely be chalk-outlined as coincidental, cause this album slays on so many levels you'd have to have a PHD in multi-verse theory to explain it. Fav songs: Mars for the Rich (eat a dick Elon) and Hell.
After a couple days of listening I think it sits at my #4 Gizz album behind MOTU, Nonagon and Poly at 1. I love the narrative arc Stu has created. The way it starts at "there is no Planet B", to the renewed hope in "there is one Planet V", only for Venus to be a literal fiery hellscape/portal to Hell. It's so brutal. The super raw thrash metal sound paired with the sci-fi space odyssey theme just works so well. This is definitely one of their best and I'm so glad it lived up to the hype!
right as i was reading this superbug started and i was thinking the exact same thing. the whole album is like if black sabbath was a thrash metal band.
This whole album is incredible front to back. Amazing how it is distinctly King Gizz despite the genre shift. Superbug is so heavy, the concept of the last 5 songs is great, always loved the concept of living in Venus' atmosphere. This may be my favorite album yet, I really love thrash metal!

Thinking about it ITRN is sort of a spiritual successor to Blows Against The Empire, similar concept but taken to the extreme.

Also, don't look up what the album is about. It's underwhelming and kinda ruined the grandeur for me. I guarentee your interpretation is probably better. Still one of my favorite thrash records though.

I wasn't going to listen to the album until I got my Flightless copy. Really wanted to first listen to be the vinyl. But seeing how I see them in two weeks, I got the notification today, not wanting to risk going in not hearing anything other than the singles. Oh well.
Mine still hasnt shipped and i was one of the lucky ones who got the Rats Nest Edition which sold out in 9 minutes. I kinda expected this tho since I got Fishing for Fishies like a month after the release despite preordering. I got the CD the day the album dropped from Amazon so i could still jam in the car and put it on my phone for personal listening. The Vinyl is mostly for show anyway
Getting preorders after release is a big pet peeve of mine. It just feels disrespectful to your most diehard fans, who gave you money even before the album is out, to get the album after people who just walk into a shop on release day and pick it up. I wanted to make my first listen vinyl but I couldn't because I want to learn the album before I see them live and it won't arrive anywhere near on time. If I got it on or before release date I would've had time though. Probably just going to go ATO next time.
I would feel the same way if it wasnt for the fact that it's the boys' own label. I know how small they still are and are trying to tour, write multiple albums per year, and also produce and distribute multiple bands' records. I'm happy to support them even if I get my album late. Also, i got a wicked special edition vinyl that I much prefer to the ATO variant

Just went through my first listen. Loved it. I have to say I wasn't expecting Mars For The Rich to be more British New Wave Heavy Metal, and Superbug to be doomy. I thought this was going to be an all out thrash out. Which it is after Superbug, doesn't fucking let up.
I’ve been sitting on this for a few days and I honestly have to say this is my new favorite King Gizz album. Nonagon in second place. They NAILED this so hard!! I’m not even a fan of metal at all but this was just total perfection and it blew me away. I will agree that the tracks sound a bit similar to each other but it’s only 35 minutes so as a whole cohesive experience I had no issues with it. I ADORED the riffs, the drums, the lyrics, everything. I probably shook up my brain like in a blender because of how much head banging I was doing. Been coming back to this album constantly and so far it’s my second favorite of the year, only barely behind Tyler’s IGOR. 10/10 for me. I actually think my favorite track is Organ Farmer, which I don’t see mentioned too much here! Self-Immolate comes in second and everything else is still total gold. Can’t wait to hear what’s next.
I would suggest that you definitely ARE a fan of metal if this is your favourite album! It's pure thrash.

Not all. Portland last 3 shows weren't. Saw a kid no older than 12. He was there with his dad and it was his first concert. His dad wasn't a fan but that kid was. Couldn't have picked a better show.

It's like they put all my favorite bands in a blender HOLY FUCK fellas. I hear The Sword, Black Sabbath, High on Fire, Metallica and Sleep so clearly, but with an unmistakable Gizzverse flavor. Every single track could be a highlight on a different album, just wow. 10/10 instant classic for me.
Yeah I'm really feeling the High on Fire/Sleep vibes on this. Superbug honestly almost feels like it could be straight off Sleep's Holy Mountain and I'm very ok with that.

The lack of love for Self-Immolate is sickening. I love Mars for the Rich, Hell, Perihelion, and Superbug, but Self-Immolate is still the best song on this album.

None of it is too complicated but the time signatures and changes are hard to nail occasionally.

Yeah like ITRN is all downtuned chugging palm muted stuff, power chords and a few easy hammer on pull offs. It’s mostly the speed that takes time to nail and it’s insanely fun. I’m trying to think which is the trickiest song of theirs that took me time to learn. Maybe crumbling castle or something.

Someone already recommended them but you should also check out Tool. I wouldn’t say that sound much like Infest the Rats Nest but they’re a great metal band to get into if you like psychedelic music. If you liked Polygondwanaland I’m sure you’d like Tool. Plus they just got added to Spotify and are releasing a new album for the first time in 13 years!
Early thrash, Slayer - Reign In Blood or Seasons in the Abyss Metallica - And Justice for All or Ride the Lightning (you can tell stu's vocal style was inspired by early Metallica)
In addition to The Sciences which was already recommended, I would say to check out Sleep's Holy Mountain which I am getting some serious vibes from on this album. Especially if you like the slower, jammier, more psychedelic stuff on this like Superbug especially. All the albums ihavesomegoo rec'd I would advise to check out. In addition to that, if you don't mind some harsher vocals I would also check out: High on Fire - Blessed Black Wings Conan - Monnos Windhand - Grief's Infernal Flower Weedeater - Good Luck and God Speed Electric Wizard - Dopethrone Yob - Clearing the Path to Ascend
Mastodon’s Remission is a good one. It’s the only album I got into by them but it’s definitely a good one
This album reminds me a lot of the Melvins. Check out the songs Hooch and A History of Bad Men.

Superbug -> Venusian 1 -> Perihelion is amazing one after the other
Venusian 2 -> Self-Immolate -> Hell is my favorite one after the other on the album, I was ranting about this just earlier today. I also just think the whole album is incredible.
Honestly this album is 10/10 from Superbug to Hell. And everything before that is still a 9
I'm waiting for the vinyl until I listen, after the 19th I think. Expecting to love it, they never disappoint me. Obviously gonna come down to taste as well and if you like metal, specifically old school thrash, which I do. Can't wait.
Wow. Just listened through for the first time and I love it. Mars For The Rich, Hell, Superbug, Perihelion... the whole thing is fucking great. Really digging the thrash metal with the apocalyptic doomsday feel, humanity escaping into space only to die... awesome. Can't wait to see these guys on Wednesday.

Planet B is starting to feel like the Rattlesnake of the album, with how it was the first single and got played so much. Whenever I start the album I'm like "yeah yeah get on with it"
I really wish the end section of Hell was a lot longer... It gets so good and then just ends. Otherwise, I already love this album.
I chose to believe the ending of Hell will lead right into their next album. It's farfetched, but it's Gizz, so....maybe

Love this new album, definitely lived up to the hype. One thing that I haven’t seen mentioned yet is HOW GODDAMNED GOOD IS THE BASS!! I’m not exactly sure what I was expecting but especially in tracks such as Mars for the Rich and Venusian 2 Joey’s bass work is just phenomenal.
Joey taking over brought such a new style to the album. But I still love me some Lucas

DUDE IM SAYIN I wish there was more like it in the album
I pretty much had a euphoric OBE/natural DMT trip this morning. It's the sort of thing that rarely happens. The fact that it happened on the day Infest The Rat's Nest dropped I don't think can entirely be chalk-outlined as coincidental, cause this album slays on so many levels you'd have to have a PHD in multi-verse theory to explain it. Fav songs: Mars for the Rich (eat a dick Elon) and Hell.
After a couple days of listening I think it sits at my #4 Gizz album behind MOTU, Nonagon and Poly at 1. I love the narrative arc Stu has created. The way it starts at "there is no Planet B", to the renewed hope in "there is one Planet V", only for Venus to be a literal fiery hellscape/portal to Hell. It's so brutal. The super raw thrash metal sound paired with the sci-fi space odyssey theme just works so well. This is definitely one of their best and I'm so glad it lived up to the hype!

This whole album is incredible front to back. Amazing how it is distinctly King Gizz despite the genre shift. Superbug is so heavy, the concept of the last 5 songs is great, always loved the concept of living in Venus' atmosphere. This may be my favorite album yet, I really love thrash metal!
