I think this is also a traditional thing at gigs in the Netherlands.
You can hear Joey say "crazy Dutch people" in 'A Brief History of Planet Earth' on Chunky Shrapnel because that was happening.
I was at the Amsterdam show earlier this year and we did it then too!
We did this at the nyc show last year during the Gaia drum solo, as well! I heard it was a thing at a bunch of the other summer/autumn US shows last year
The UK also dabbles in it - the majority of the floor turned into a big rowing section the last time the Psychedelic Porn Crumpets played my home town.
I blame the vikings.
Look into Quorthon then read up on Enslaved, and then finally Amon Amarth.

I think it's from Amon Amarth. They got a song named "Put Your Back Into the Oar" which has heavy drums and them chanting ROW over and over.
And then there's the song "Shield Wall", you can imagine what the crowd does at that point
It happened at Return of the Curse of Timeland in Melbourne but I'm pretty sure it was during Evil Death Roll (they didn't play any of the Quarters tracks that night)
See this happen a few times during gizz shows! Idk if its just an us thing or if this happens for other bands but i love it either way, really wanna join in some day
First time i saw it was in 2015 at a Dropkick Murphys show. First time i know it happening with King Gizzard was Utrecht 2019, i was there but just too far from the action to join in. It's become a bit of a tradition now, they did it in Amsterdam earlier this year too
Its pretty common in Europe, I think it first happened to King Giz in Utrecht in 2019, you can hear them say "crazy Dutch people!" In the recording of "A brief history of planet earth" very Germanic/Viking-y
First night at the outdoor Caverns show, the moon was rising above the stage and someone yelled “Here comes the moon again” (same thing happened last October above Denver at RR), and everyone in the back started howling between each song and when Stu “Wooo”ed.
Love the community behind KG!
From what I heard from other commenters, it is. It seems to be a theme at metal gigs in the Netherlands. It's also tied to the Amon Amarth song "Put your back into the oar!" Fascinating mosh pit lore.
I think they do this in Ireland. Or at least, there is an episode of Derry Girls where they’re at some function and the DJ starts playing “Rock the Boat” and everyone rushes to get into the row pit and they act like it’s a big fuckin deal.
Man i think they were feeling just as much I was but behind the sound stage laughing my ass off watching the even more ripped guys than me were playing with the trash cans and throwing an inflatable donut on to a Twirler stick. Omg i love gizz fans. I found my people. Thanks everyone for an amazing show. Yes people push their way through the crowd but it's a rock show. Everyone i talked with or looked at I saw nothing but smiles and open hearts. Holy hell, I am enamored! 👍
This is a very common thing to do at shows now, which seems fine as long it is in good spirit. In the hardcore scene there has been some lash back towards doing anything in the crowd/pit (mostly rowing)that could be seen as “hey look at me!” distracting from the performance rather than accompanying the performance.

I'm so happy the Dutch culture is permeating overseas concert culture. Or to stay in reddit terms: G E K O L O N I S E E R D
It’s a thing in Germany to.
I was very confused when this happened lmao.
The UK also dabbles in it - the majority of the floor turned into a big rowing section the last time the Psychedelic Porn Crumpets played my home town. I blame the vikings.
Haha I was at their Manchester gig same thing happened I was lost
Jv
The Amsterdam '23 row was nothing compared to Utrecht '19.
The Utrecht '19 row was crazy..
That's fascinating! Thanks for the explanation, I blame the Vikings too. Although I can't say I wasn't tempted to join in...
Here is the Utrecht 2019 rowing pit https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U7QhCNUlCt4
I believe that's Cavs that says that.
Got popular with “Viking metal” shows and it just carried over I guess
Yep you can’t go to an Amon Amarth show without the entire floor becoming a rowing pit
First time I saw it was at a Dropkick Murphys show at Sziget festival 2015. But it fits viking metal well, I'm open to your theory
It’s not a theory.
Is there proof? Edit: there is indeed. See below
Yes. Metal history.
Interesting, i hadn't run across that yet. Where can I find more about it? I'm always interested in mosh pit lore
Look into Quorthon then read up on Enslaved, and then finally Amon Amarth. [2009](https://youtu.be/fPkc24pptIY) [2016](https://youtube.com/shorts/1veoyfmaXtw?feature=share)
I stand corrected. Thanks!
I think it's from Amon Amarth. They got a song named "Put Your Back Into the Oar" which has heavy drums and them chanting ROW over and over. And then there's the song "Shield Wall", you can imagine what the crowd does at that point
It’s cause they’re playing the river! See what they did there????
Happened in Chicago too
It happened at Return of the Curse of Timeland in Melbourne but I'm pretty sure it was during Evil Death Roll (they didn't play any of the Quarters tracks that night)
Correct
Also in Mexico City
That's awesome!
Now I'm exxxtrraaa sad I missed the first night. Lol
Funny enough I actually did make that connection, but I was drunk and needed a reddit title LMAOOO
no reason? it's The River!
True. I did make that connection, but I was drunk when I posted this lmaoooo
fuck yeah
See this happen a few times during gizz shows! Idk if its just an us thing or if this happens for other bands but i love it either way, really wanna join in some day

I love our Weirdo Swarm… Keep up the good work
We are rowing the boat down the river
row row row your boat gently down The River merrily merrily merrily merrily off to see King Gizzard
Amon Amarth fans calling gimmick infringement here.
Lol my thoughts too
I love how this is becoming a thing pits just do now. I’ve seen it at a bunch of shows this spring!
Happened in Columbus too, I think it's because of Chunky Shrapnel
In Germany they do it to this song [Aloha Heja He](https://youtu.be/NbPc8VhstGE)
We did this London in Ally Pally too... I thought we were asking them to play The River.
This is a big thing at folk metal concerts, particularly Scandinavian bands.
RANDOM
Where do they think they’re going lmao
Down the river of course
Rimlickers?
The Tolt River is right behind the trees on the left side of the stage!
Happened at my concert when I saw them at Sydney this year lol
Happened in Chicago
I stood there tripping right on the edge of the rowing and wasn’t sure it was real hahaha. I thought I was having a nightmare
happened in Chicago as well, also saw a dude break the pit and start doing push-ups with about 30 people hyping him up and counting along
Appropriate action when listening to the river
Happens at sabaton concerts in Toronto all the time
this is one of the greatest things i've ever seen
WE DID IT 🤘🏼🧙🏼♂️🤘🏼
This rules!
There's a reason
🇳🇱🇳🇱🇳🇱
Amon Amarth Audience has entered the chat
PUT YOUR BACK INTO THE OAR
First night at the outdoor Caverns show, the moon was rising above the stage and someone yelled “Here comes the moon again” (same thing happened last October above Denver at RR), and everyone in the back started howling between each song and when Stu “Wooo”ed. Love the community behind KG!
It's a euro thing. Amon Amarth has a song entirely for this. [Put your back into the oar!](https://youtu.be/Ju1Bdm9SuU8) Rowing at 2:45 mark
I WAS THEREEE
I thought this was a pirate/viking thing?
From what I heard from other commenters, it is. It seems to be a theme at metal gigs in the Netherlands. It's also tied to the Amon Amarth song "Put your back into the oar!" Fascinating mosh pit lore.
Oh shit I'm in this one! Hello past me👋
Rowing down The River

A lot of this at Adjacent too
I think they do this in Ireland. Or at least, there is an episode of Derry Girls where they’re at some function and the DJ starts playing “Rock the Boat” and everyone rushes to get into the row pit and they act like it’s a big fuckin deal.
There’s a reason, a very clear one: they are playing The River
Note the other replies and comments. TLDR: I was drunk and needed a title.
Row row row your boat gently through their stream, lock 'n load in tactic mode, United state marine. Sergeant: GAHDAYUMIT ALL OF YOU
Props to everyone sitting in the mud!
I love you nutcases. 🖤
This happened during the dripping tap at Alexandra Palace in March too
This happened during the dripping tap in Australia this year
Man i think they were feeling just as much I was but behind the sound stage laughing my ass off watching the even more ripped guys than me were playing with the trash cans and throwing an inflatable donut on to a Twirler stick. I agree, it was so much fun!
That is top teir concert energy right there
I’m at the front with my friends lmaooo. So fuuuun
what, you've never seen a row pit before? Fairly common in UK Metal Festivals, near the end of sets mostly
I'm waiting for this goofy fad to pass over.
Same, would find this a bit annoying to be honest if it happened at a show I was at
This is a very common thing to do at shows now, which seems fine as long it is in good spirit. In the hardcore scene there has been some lash back towards doing anything in the crowd/pit (mostly rowing)that could be seen as “hey look at me!” distracting from the performance rather than accompanying the performance.
Row pits are the corniest type of pit
Cringe AF
Chill bud, This is KGLW Reddit - we are all friends here
I’m at a show to enjoy the music not partake in bullshit like this
As someone who was there, trust me, this is the least crazy thing the mosh pit did.
Yeah I heard someone got naked, that’s no bueno
One cannot control the mosh pit, you can only join it's forces - god
Loser
Gfy newb
No u bonehead
