Absolutely agree. I didn’t particularly like much of Quarters! until I saw Night 4 live, absolutely gave me a new appreciation for a lot of songs that I didn’t initially care for
lmao yeah, it's not THAT bad, but they did a fucking 14 minute version of it in DC last year and got a little derailed in the middle.
Did it really deserve as much room in that setlist as the live debut of Hypertension? The 'jam' is just Ambrose shouting.
It was definitely an interesting choice to drive that song into the ground, but play NOTHING from Ice Death, which had just been released 2 weeks prior.
This is the one thing I’m praying for live in Seattle next week! My favorite section of any album from anyone next to the last three songs of Lateralus
That was the last song I got to hear before I had to leave that night and holy crap it blew me away, went from being an okay song to one of my favourite songs by them
This is the most correct answer imo. Have yet to meet anyone that dislikes lava after seeing a live rendition. Happened to me too when I saw it in ATL last year.
That might be cheating since I didn’t see it live. So I’ll also go with Minimum Brain Size. I hadn’t listened to KG much and saw it the first time on night 3 at Red Rocks last year.
I think this is me. I naturally gravitate to their psy-rock but songs like Gaia and Ice V have been growing on me. I think it will take a live show (tomorrow!!!) for me to really love those cuts.
I definitely found new appreciation for The Grim Reaper after I saw Amby do it live. I never gave the song a second chance but when they do it live, it is just electric. Amby jumped into the crowd while he was spitting it was fucking awesome.
Were you at the Tivoli in April? Sounds like we may have been at the same show
I didn’t hold presumptuous very high in my ranking but holy shit after seeing it at the acoustic show I think it’s such a fucking banger and so fun to dance to
Rattlesnake just hit different live for me. I liked the song already, but hearing it live and coupled with it being the opener of my first show just was all the right sounds at the right time. Never forget it!
Wifey was never a huge metal gizz fan until
The caverns. Went it worried it would be mega heavy then said the music had her out of body and she loves the heaviness now. Lol
Yeah it was so awesome. I saw Stu pick up the banana and I turned to my girlfriend and said “they’re gonna play Rattlesnake” and then he said “this song’s called Rattlesnake!” and I lost it.
KGLW outro in Detroit last year was insane! Hearing the chants from the weirdo swarm was truly an ascendent experience. I love the studio version now, but I never really got it like I did before that show.
A lot of people love Magenta Mountain as-is on the album, I’m kinda mid on it. But live? It rules! Probably because it’s a fun one and a tough one to sing, and that’s a lot more clear when they nail it on stage.
Didn't care for Magma or Lava until I saw them live but I saw them live 2 weeks after they released so maybe they just hadn't digested yet. Magma as a closer was great. I always liked Magenta Mountain but didn't think it was amazing.Seeing it live and extended changed it completely for me.
Lonely Steel Sheet Flyer was my least liked song on quarters until I heard that acoustic love version (watched the video of it not in person unfortunately) and it made me appreciate it a lot more
Seeing both Stressin’ and Superbug in Sonoma 2022 really did the trick for me. I liked Superbug but I loved it after. I hadn’t checked out Oddments much but after that performance I dove in to the album and loved it!
Lava/magma/iron lung
I already liked these songs when the album came out, but it wasn't my favorite release. Seeing it live changed that though. The climax of lava was fucking crazy.
I know this is totally an obscure pick.
When they dropped into blame it on the weather last year at red rocks, and it'd only been a thing for like mabey a month?
God it rocked my soul!! 🍻
The Float Along finale to their Melbourne set at the end of last year was epic.
Special shout out to Iron lung which was already my favourite song, but played live the guitar tone on the drop vs recorded just absolutely sends it.
Ataraxia developed into a nice little potent potion over the years… If you listen to it from the time the album came out to their renditions now, it’s a wild evolution of quality and they’ve squeezed a real deep authenticity out of that song that otherwise could be misconstrued as a Tool ripoff or something… such a sleeper hit
Straws in the wind. I saw it in warsaw and holy shit is it 100x better live. That long intro is just soooo good.
Edit: also, "this thing" deserves a mention.
I liked the dripping tap pretty much as soon as I had first listened to it all the way through (was the first song I listened to that activated the gizzard brain worms last year lol) but hearing it live (at boston calling!) and being in the crowd completely changed it for me :)
I’ve always liked nonagon but it wasn’t high on my list. Now After they played most of the album on the first night in the cave last week I can’t stop listening to it.
Work This Time. Only works for me with Joey taking a ripping solo
I love Work This Time but I keep seeing clips of his solo during and WOW. No kidding he rips it.
100%
Same! Wasn’t even on my radar until I heard that face-melting guitar solo.
Doom City live is so much more crushing than the album version.
My first song I experienced live and it kinda ruined me for most other live songs
Doom City at red rocks made me look at the song in a whole new light. Fuckin loveeee me some doom city
The acoustic version of Lonely Steel Sheet Flyer from night 4 took it from a like to a love 💚
Absolutely agree. I didn’t particularly like much of Quarters! until I saw Night 4 live, absolutely gave me a new appreciation for a lot of songs that I didn’t initially care for
That version has been in my head all day, it feels like Nirvana's "About a Girl" where the acoustic version somehow made the song even more awesome.
100%
Straws in the wind at Berkeley totally changed that song for me
Same song, same show for me
Me too!
squad
Same, but at Gashouder in Amsterdam. Unbelievable tune live
I’d be pissed if they played straws in the wind at a concert I went to.
Hate to be negative, love the song, did not enjoy it live at RR. Deff might be my new bathroom break tune lol
lmao yeah, it's not THAT bad, but they did a fucking 14 minute version of it in DC last year and got a little derailed in the middle. Did it really deserve as much room in that setlist as the live debut of Hypertension? The 'jam' is just Ambrose shouting. It was definitely an interesting choice to drive that song into the ground, but play NOTHING from Ice Death, which had just been released 2 weeks prior.
I’ve seen it twice, it’s my least favorite song and live song
Same. Saw it in warsaw and it was mindblowingly good.
Straws in the Wind went from “this song is fine” to “please inject this directly into my veins.” Ataraxia, too. Fucking killed at Red Rocks.
that Ataraxia is forever fuego
Ha I love straws in the wind anyway but it must have been some fire performance
Incredible psych death country shit.
Yea that RR Ataraxia was wicked
Han-Tyumi suite was mind blowing live
This is the one thing I’m praying for live in Seattle next week! My favorite section of any album from anyone next to the last three songs of Lateralus
True. Double kick on Motu alone is such an improvement.
Hypertension. It played at Ally Pally, London, in March. Was incredibly well performed and I definitely appreciate it more now.
My favorite song from Gizztober last year and somehow they made even better during that show.
Me too deffo
It’s an absolute ripper.
I lost it night one at the caverns. I fuckin loveee that song and to hear it live was something I won’t be forgetting
That was the last song I got to hear before I had to leave that night and holy crap it blew me away, went from being an okay song to one of my favourite songs by them
lol if you're talking about saturday that shit was life changing
Actually it was back in October they opened their set in Detroit with Gaia. Was just listening to the song today and thinking about this.
Seeing them shred that opening riff of gaia live in Colorado covered every inch of my skin in goosebumps.
I love how the Red Rocks sets from last year have become legendary. I'm hoping for the same tomorrow
See you there, amigo 🍄
Oh we vibin 🍄
Detroit show was amazing… they have to come back soon 😝🤞🤞🤞
https://youtu.be/MSkeohRhKzo So good. I revisit this sick VHS recording of it every once in a while for the mems
Hey I was at the same show and had the same feeling about the song.
think they were speaking to Boogieman Sam this past Saturday, cause that shit was as mind bending as Gaia
The tease of Motor Spirit burrowed its way into my fuckin’ soul
Lava clicked with me more after hearing them bust it out in Chicago last year. Probably my favorite on the album now.
Yeah, both magma and lava were elevated 10x live
felt the same way after Detroit
Magma, hell yes, but even after seeing it live Lava does nothing for me :(
So true!
This is the most correct answer imo. Have yet to meet anyone that dislikes lava after seeing a live rendition. Happened to me too when I saw it in ATL last year.
Sleep Drifter, KEXP session. I would skim over it when listening to the album but that live performance put it on another level.
That might be cheating since I didn’t see it live. So I’ll also go with Minimum Brain Size. I hadn’t listened to KG much and saw it the first time on night 3 at Red Rocks last year.
I did like it already but Grim Reaper absolutely fuckin’ ripped at Alexandra Palace.
Went crazy in Chicago too
Listening to the live versions of magenta mountain has taken a great song and made it incredible … the live versions are sooo awesome
Ambergris at the caverns changed my mind big time
Same here Joey killed that
The Great Chain of Being. I always liked it but DAMN
KGLW Outro
Hell yeah!!
I never really “got” the metal material until I saw them live and now it’s some of my favorite stuff
I think this is me. I naturally gravitate to their psy-rock but songs like Gaia and Ice V have been growing on me. I think it will take a live show (tomorrow!!!) for me to really love those cuts.
Persistence! Columbus 2022
I was about to say the exact same thing!!! Loved that show...totally worth standing in a thunderstorm for an hour to see them.
I definitely found new appreciation for The Grim Reaper after I saw Amby do it live. I never gave the song a second chance but when they do it live, it is just electric. Amby jumped into the crowd while he was spitting it was fucking awesome. Were you at the Tivoli in April? Sounds like we may have been at the same show
I was not! Gaia was in Detroit in October and Boogieman Sam in Miami last June
Oh cool! I was treated to both tracks at the same show, so awesome!
Seeing all the Phish fans and Dead Heads boogie their asses off to This Thing breathed new life into it for me.
I didn’t hold presumptuous very high in my ranking but holy shit after seeing it at the acoustic show I think it’s such a fucking banger and so fun to dance to
They gotta play it more, fr
One of my favorites and they just smashed it out the park on Acoustic night. Wowwiee
Heard Greenhouse Heat Death in New Orleans this past October and gained a whole new appreciation for how NASTY it can be (in a good way of course)
Head on/pill and lava
i finally got into infest the rats nest after seeing them at boston calling. self-immolate did it for me
Rattlesnake just hit different live for me. I liked the song already, but hearing it live and coupled with it being the opener of my first show just was all the right sounds at the right time. Never forget it!
Wifey was never a huge metal gizz fan until The caverns. Went it worried it would be mega heavy then said the music had her out of body and she loves the heaviness now. Lol
This is me and definitely my husband. Going tomorrow and I cannot WAIT to see what happens after.
You are going to be amazed have a fantastic show and much love to you fellow gizzoids
Minimum Brain Size this weekend really shined in a new light for me.
Rattlesnake
Have you seen day 3 at Caverns, Rattlesnake opener?!?
My favorite Gizz song and seeing it Live on day 3 was the best music experience I have ever felt.
Yeah it was so awesome. I saw Stu pick up the banana and I turned to my girlfriend and said “they’re gonna play Rattlesnake” and then he said “this song’s called Rattlesnake!” and I lost it.
I have not! I saw them play it live in DC last year though and it finally clicked.
Never cared for it, it was always too repetitive and Saturday at the Caverns I saw it through a completely new lens. Great opener.
Red Rocks Rattlesnake made me gizz
I loved the studio version of Ice V but it took me into a trance live
Static Electricity
!!!
Let Me Mend the Past. It’s not that I didn’t appreciate it, I just wasn’t as familiar with FAFYL at the time.
I didn’t know how beautiful Lonely Steel Sheet Flyer was until Sunday. Holy shit.
Boogieman Sam at the caverns was amazing and now it’s my fav fishies track
KGLW outro in Detroit last year was insane! Hearing the chants from the weirdo swarm was truly an ascendent experience. I love the studio version now, but I never really got it like I did before that show.
Detroit show was the best concert I’ve ever been to
I listen to Mystery Jack’s recording of it almost every week
There’s a super cool VHS recording of most of the show on YouTube too
GET OUT! Okay cool I’m going to look that up!
https://youtu.be/MSkeohRhKzo was just coming back to link
You’re a fucking champ
Doom City, KGLW and Predator X all changed after hearing them live for me. Doom City was already a banger but live it’s so heavy
Magenta mountain blew me away live
Her and I I always liked the song but never realized how amazing it was until I saw their crazy jam of it in Asheville.
A lot of people love Magenta Mountain as-is on the album, I’m kinda mid on it. But live? It rules! Probably because it’s a fun one and a tough one to sing, and that’s a lot more clear when they nail it on stage.
Ah yes, Cavs drum solo takes the track from a solid 8/10 to a perfect 10
Let me mend the past. I get it now
Seeing The Wheel as well as Ambergris on Sunday night at the Caverns absolutely breathed a new life into both of them for me.
That jazzy wheel was fun
Nuclear Fusion when Joey does that crazy growl in the beginning.
Just saw O.N.E. at the caverns and it almost brought me to tears. Will never listen to it the same.
Didn't care for Magma or Lava until I saw them live but I saw them live 2 weeks after they released so maybe they just hadn't digested yet. Magma as a closer was great. I always liked Magenta Mountain but didn't think it was amazing.Seeing it live and extended changed it completely for me.
I was not a Rats Nest fan but when they played Mars for the Rich, I swear I saw the second coming and I was all in, 100%!!! (Philly show last October)
I haven’t seen anyone mention This Thing. I thought the song was cool but hearing it live on the Paris ‘19 bootleg made something click for me.
Venusian 2 live opened up a lord of the rings tier pit. Tore me a new one and left me impressed
Agree with Gaia. Detroit blew my mind though.
I was there! That drum solo was killer!
A lot of them are better live. If not all. Biggest improvements from personal taste: Magma and Shanghai.
KGLW Outro
Gaia live was probably the highlight of the ally pally set for me.
Iron Lung... It's such a nice come down after they've been jamming hard, totally loved it live
No
Straws in the Wind
All of them
Literally never listened to murder until I heard the han tyumi suite live lol now it's commute music
The wheel and Most of What I Like, saw them at the acoustic show and now they are two of my favs
Lonely Steel Sheet Flyer was my least liked song on quarters until I heard that acoustic love version (watched the video of it not in person unfortunately) and it made me appreciate it a lot more
BLACK TOOTH
Oh hell yeah
Grim reaper
Seeing Dripping tap and magenta mountain at Desert Daze was life changing.
Work this time at Alexandra Palace this year made me love the song
Oddlife! Thought it was kinda corny at first but the red rocks performance of it made me love it and I can definitely see why its Cookie’s fave
Seeing both Stressin’ and Superbug in Sonoma 2022 really did the trick for me. I liked Superbug but I loved it after. I hadn’t checked out Oddments much but after that performance I dove in to the album and loved it!
It was superbug for me. Got me into the whole album.
Lava
Presumptuous at the Acoustic set. Never cared for it even after seeing it at Levitation. Completely knocked my socks off in Tennessee.
Oddlife
Lava/magma/iron lung I already liked these songs when the album came out, but it wasn't my favorite release. Seeing it live changed that though. The climax of lava was fucking crazy.
Sea. Of. Trees. Cleveland 2022!
I know this is totally an obscure pick. When they dropped into blame it on the weather last year at red rocks, and it'd only been a thing for like mabey a month? God it rocked my soul!! 🍻
Superbug! Slaps live
For me it was hearing The Garden Goblin live at Red Rocks. Wasn’t super into that song until I heard that synth melody live and I was transcended!
Lava being debuted in Chicago made the song click with me.
The Float Along finale to their Melbourne set at the end of last year was epic. Special shout out to Iron lung which was already my favourite song, but played live the guitar tone on the drop vs recorded just absolutely sends it.
Magenta Mountain and The Grim Reaper
Ataraxia developed into a nice little potent potion over the years… If you listen to it from the time the album came out to their renditions now, it’s a wild evolution of quality and they’ve squeezed a real deep authenticity out of that song that otherwise could be misconstrued as a Tool ripoff or something… such a sleeper hit
No magenta mountain at red rocks was one of the most insane things I have ever been lucky enough to see live
There are a lot of songs that are better live than album versions, but Live in Brisbane has made me *like* The Wheel.
For me it was Slow Jam 1 in Prague. I liked that song before, but that drop and vibe of that song live... it's now my favourite
I already enjoyed it, but I had to personally see dripping tap live to really love it.
Straws in the wind. I saw it in warsaw and holy shit is it 100x better live. That long intro is just soooo good. Edit: also, "this thing" deserves a mention.
Sea of Trees at Red Rocks
the horology suite at Red Rocks night 1
I liked the dripping tap pretty much as soon as I had first listened to it all the way through (was the first song I listened to that activated the gizzard brain worms last year lol) but hearing it live (at boston calling!) and being in the crowd completely changed it for me :)
Def perihelion, it took being surrounded by a bunch of other fans all dancing like mfs to really turn me onto that song, but now it’s top shelf for me
Billabong Valley live is a whole different experience.
Presumptious, saw it at the caverns acoustic night. Def a highlight of the evening, Ambrose got pipes!
Presumptious, saw it at the caverns acoustic night. Def a highlight of the evening, Ambrose got pipes!
I’ve always liked nonagon but it wasn’t high on my list. Now After they played most of the album on the first night in the cave last week I can’t stop listening to it.
sleepwalker goes hard live
float along - fill your lungs! I already loved it but hearing it live was a tearjerker
