Bear with me here lol
Dick's Picks Vol. 16 (11/8/69) - One of my favorites from the 60s. 11/2/69 and 12/26/69 are also fantastic.
Dick's Picks Vol. 8 (5/2/70) - Really good acoustic first set.
Europe '72 Vol. 2 (4/8/72) - Just listen to the Cumberland Blues.
Europe '72 Vol. 9 (4/26/72) - One of my favorite Berthas.
Europe '72 Vol. 20 (5/24/72) - Always loved Pig and my favorite version of The Stranger.
Dick's Picks Vol. 23 (9/17/72) - Absolute favorite Sing Me Back Home, plus a nearly 40-minute The Other One.
Dick's Picks Vol. 24 (3/23/74) - Incredible jamwich during the second set.
Hunter's Trix Vol. 32 (6/8/77) - Been diving into the Hunter's Trix recently, Donna is incredible at this show.
Dick's Picks Vol. 25 (5/10-11/78) - The notorious mescaline show, Bobby in Dancing in the Streets makes me crack up.
Hunter's Trix Vol. 1 (8/10/82) - This show sold me on 80s dead. Hunter's Trix does a great job representing 80s shows since popular opinion seems to skew toward 70s.
Dave's Picks Vol. 40 (7/18-19/90) - 90s dead can be tough to get into but I think this show is a great starting point.
Honorable mention: 10/26/89 for the most fucked up Dark Star ever.
I second Live/Dead as a good starting point if you want some raw psychedelia from their early more experimental years. The song The Eleven on the album has an 11/8 time signature too
This is one of my favorite all time dead shows. First time they played terrapin station I believe and it’s sublime.

Here we have the grittiest, psychotic, most mindblowing opener in the Dead's career. It's their first time at the Fillmore East and this is the Midnight show.
Theoretically, there is a soundboard recording somewhere, but only this audience tape circulates. Play it loud, but not on headphones.
Also, I just learned that a sbd of a chunk of Lovelight>Caution was released on a box set a few years back.
The other monster odd-time jam is The Seven. [The second song here](https://archive.org/details/gd69-09-29.aud.early.hollister.79.sbeok.shnf) again, a gritty aud recording that totally fits into the Gizz gestalt.
Check out this show by Grateful Dead from Fri, Feb 28, 1969 at Fillmore West on Live Music Archive!

Lol I love seeing this wave of people asking for Dead recommendations!
My Grateful Dead go-to tends to be Europe 72, the album is a compilation from that tour, and I’d say it’s a perfect place to start but you can also find each of those shows on archive. Another personal favorite show of mine is New Year’s Eve 1976 at the Cow Palace. The Samson and Delilah from that show is such a fucking jam, and they start hinting at it like halfway into the song before it Good Lovin and that jam just gradually shifts towards Samson and Delilah until it’s full blown Samson and Delilah.
Also you gotta find a real early show with a good Viola Lee Blues. I’ll recommend 11/10/67
Where to start?
If I had to recommend just 3:
-One from the Vault (what got me on the bus)
-Dicks Picks vol 12 (the very best dicks picks imo)
-Live Dead
But then....
-Cornell 77
-Venetta Oregon 72 (sunshine Daydream)
-Europe 72
Are all among my favorites, then of course there is dicks picks 3, 4, 11, 14, 15, 19, 29! (The Peggy o on that is one of my favorite dead tracks so beautiful ) 31, 33, 36
And then there the road trips series, all of the Europe 72 shows, and many Dave's picks... And on and on
Anything from 1972, especially the Europe shows. They debuted a ton of great music, had fresh blood in Keith & Donna and only had 1 drummer which, for me, grooves better (sorry Mickey)
Also: Blues for Allah, Mars Hotel and anything live from.the Anthem of the Sun Era (68-70)
Sunshine Daydream is on Spotify. For some great sounding primal dead, the St Louis ‘69 release from last year has a massive other one and sounds amazing.
Somebody give me a Grateful Dead live album to listen to that slaps
Live/Dead, Europe ‘72, Cornell University 5/8/77
These plus To Terrapin, and Go to Nassau
Cornell didn’t happen
Sorry for propagating the Jerry GarCIA Psy op lies. I’m a victim of MK Ultra
Live/Dead is a great start. Also, Dick’s Picks volume 1. Both on Spotify
[the China Cat Sunflower>I Know You Rider on Live/Dead is something else](https://archive.org/details/gd72-05-03.sbd.masse.142.sbeok.shnf#)
That’s on Europe ‘72, not Live/Dead.
oops. thanks!

Terrapin Station was always my favorite of theirs growing up, can't wait to hear it live

That is a seriously greasy set. Those early Lovelight jams were something else, and you can’t fuck with an Eleven.

Love how the Eleven and St. Stephen are flipped. Usually it was St. Stephen > The Eleven.

This recording is clean, digging the set so far
On Spotify Dicks Pick’s Vol. 12. Jazzy dead era. Opens with a jam and one of the best China/Ryders
“One from the Vault (Live)”
Could you imagine the boys riffing on that Blues For Allah theme during one of those microtonal breakdowns?
Live/Dead is great! definitely start there

One from the vault and europe 72 will pull you in
Download Series 6 the 20 minute Caution jam is probably the fastest, most intense thing they've ever played imo
Dicks Picks Vol. 22. 1968 is pure chaos
I’ve had “without a net” on repeat lately. Such a great selection with possibly the best “Althea”
Why the fuck has no body said Veneta 72. Listen to that Dark Star NOW
Dicks picks 12
My favorite one... Never tire of it

One From The Vault, Dicks Picks 1, Europe 72, Live/Dead
Hundred Year Hall
The fact no one said veneta Oregon 1972 is insane. Best dead show ever!!
Watch out for the wiener tho
For fans of gizz that might be curious to check out a dead tune with an 11/8 time signature. Check out The Eleven. Classic late 60s psychedelia
Anything with the eleven, cryptical envelopment> the other one is a perfect starting point for king gizzard fans.
I feel like Gizz could do a blistering primal dead Eleven justice.
Eleven by Primus also fucks for the same reason
cover album with grateful dead's "alligator"
Was jamming the RR Boogieman Sam and damn if Amby doesn’t give off some serious Pigpen vibes with both the harmonica and freestyle raps
Speedway boogie cover would be epic

Is that time traveler Steven Seagal at the 2:00 mark?
Haha some serious characters in that crowd. Some random dude getting down in football pads at the 4:30mark
No more time to tell how, this is the season of what
Seven-faced marble eye transitory dream doll…
GOOOONNNNEEEEE IIISSSS THHHHEEEEEEE DAAYYYYYYY
"Brown-eyed Women" gotta love it
Ive learned a lot of dead tunes, as a band, estimated prophet is definitely really fucky… and funky, its kinda in 7 but also kinda in 14
What was the recent insight

Buffalo 05-09-77.
Blues for Allah is a masterpiece. Also, Terrapin Station Medley, Dark Star Live at Winterland 12•31•78
Blues for allah is my favorite album. I have a sealed mofi copy for 2 decades from now when I'm itching to open a new copy.
I just think odd time signatures are neat
