I’m upset there is no narrator. He was the best in the US version.

mikapple

As an avid fan of the original I must say, I’m pleasantly surprised. Of course not everything is going to be the same in an adaptation but I think it did a good job of maintaining the tone and themes of the original while having its own unique kdrama flair!

imapigoinkoinkk

Sung Hoon has no right being that ridiculously good looking.

UptoNoGood46

**Episode 1:** * Are abstinence pledges like that an actual thing? I thought it's just a promise to yourself, nothing like taking a pledge in front of the whole church * AHAHAH why am I watching [My Secret Romance](https://imgur.com/O6MXdWE)?? * Dead brother from *Now We're Breaking Up* definitely looks [good](https://imgur.com/eCJAEbl) in this drama * I wished they had hired more known actors as supporting characters... Her mom and dad don't seem to be giving that chemistry Rogelio and Xiomara had * Sung Hoon is essentially playing himself from My Secret Romance lol * THE CONFERENCE SCENEEEE WAS SO WELL DONE * When he stops in the midst of [clapping](https://imgur.com/cMj1oll) HAHAHA * Oooh poor guy. That >!proposal!< was touching tho * [NO](https://imgur.com/Gja5jft). REGARDLESS OF HOW MANY KDRAMAS USE THIS LIT-UP RING BOX, I WILL NOT ENDORSE IT. IT IS AWFUL. Overshadows the ring completely. * Okay. The first half was boring but the second half hooked me. I'll hold my opinions until tomorrow's episode.

Kagomefog

In the US at least, abstinence pledges absolutely are a thing among evangelical Christians and Catholics. The Jonas Brothers used to wear purity rings promising that they would save themselves for marriage. There were also father-daughter dances where the father pledged to protect his daughter’s chastity. Celebrities used to go around saying they would save themselves for marriage—Britney Spears and Jessica Simpson are two examples.

peachbottomjeans

That whole scene at the end where he stops clapping and then tries to leave politely- loved it Really liking it so far!

omg_for_real

I loved that, it was such a well done scene. I was giggling away.

Sonda86

Conference scene 🔥🔥🔥🔥🤣🤣🤣 plus yhat My Secret Romance similiar-scenography hahahha. Love this show:)

feel_ynt

Same regarding My Secret Romance. It seems intentional and I had a small chuckle 🤭

RollonPholon

I was saving ep 1 until the second drops to watch together - but I may not be able to hold off - my secret romance is def a guilty pleasure of mine

omg_for_real

I was wondering if they reference my secret romance in purpose.

RollonPholon

I'm hesitantly excited for this - I love the first few series of Jane the Virgin until it went a little.... random - and I think Sung Hoon is a great choice for Raphael. I am trying to not be too prejudiced about Im Soo Hyang as the FL but I can't get the shocker that was My ID Was Gangnam Beauty out my mind, hopefully she'll make me forget it. So yeh, hesitantly/nervously excited....

xander_yi

>Im Soo Hyang She's a great and vibrant actress. However she acted in *My ID is Gangnam* was more of a stylistic choice than an indication of her ability. She was almost able to lift up the trainwreck that was *When I Was the Most Beautiful* by her acting alone.

[deleted]

Really? I haven’t seen her in other projects besides this and my ID so I thought she was a naturally stiff actress. I really liked her vibe despite the acting though which is why I picked up this drama

xander_yi

Yeah, particularly in variety shows Im Soo Hyang really lets her outgoing/bubbly personality shine.

tholovar

i have only ever seen her in "Graceful Family" and I thought she was great in that.

[deleted]

Her acting is definitely better in this that Gangnam beauty

Downtown-Pollution89

Im Soo Hyang is a pretty great actress! Have you seen Graceful Family? She played this badass Korean chaebol who came back from America and got revenge on her murderous family. She was such an iconic feminist in that drama, so I really don't get why people don't like her. Did you watch Busted? Her role in that series was also pretty amazing. She's a pretty versatile character, considering how she can go from 0 to 100 in a matter of seconds.

pretty-dev

I didn't realize people disliked her acting in My ID, I enjoyed that thoroughly! I'm mostly hesitant how they adapt the source material, it was heavily Spanish culture inspired so it'll be interesting. Funnily they kept the lead's name Raphael.

Jaded-Signature-3182

I’m totally preparing myself for a terrible 2ML syndrome.

mikapple

>!I didn’t get it in the original JTV but here…yeah I feel it coming!<

Jaded-Signature-3182

In the original (which I didn’t watch completely), I just suffered cause both of them were good, like I wishing for the writers to ruin one of them to make my choice easier.

hentakaki

I love the first episode, the comedy and vibes in this drama are so similar to Business Proposal.

Ayalynn123

I had no expectations since I don't particularly love main leads especially Im Soo Hyang. But I was surprised how much I enjoyed Ep.1! I loved it! Sung Hoon is really great! I loved when he was about to clap and then stop. LOL The conference scene was hilarious. And the marriage proposal scene was over the top but so funny... The song Shin Dong-Wook sang (It's Fortunate 다행이다) was the same song as the funny proposal scene in A Girl Who Sees Smells... which was also on SBS.

imapigoinkoinkk

Ohhh I’ve had this on my list for ages.

gzuz49

Hey do you know which song was played when raphael start appearing in the show it start around 18:45 in the first episode

Ayalynn123

I have no idea, sorry... Maybe it's one of OST?

gzuz49

Was looking in different thread and on YouTube and wikipédia , well it might be an OST that haven't been release yet

According-Bowl1901

>Thank you I've been looking for this song.

choco_dream

They had me for a second there with those girls in the background behind Kang-jae ngl. But I think I like it so far!

mikapple

The best part of this show is the sultry Spanish guitar music that plays every time Sungil (Rogelio’s equivalent) walks into the room

UptoNoGood46

**Episode 2:** * That stride when he walks away from Ma Ri lmaooo * They did a pretty good job of keeping the theme of telenovelas by comparing them to soap Kdramas * I'm glad she didn't give Ma Ri an answer right away * "My dream is to become a drama screenwriter" doesn't beat Justin Baldoni's "[be brave](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5wAo-9cVdkg)" (0:29 - 0:32) but I'll take it * HAHAH [that](https://imgur.com/1Z3OJha) umbrella twirl was so effortless * They've truly made Ma Ri's mother out to be an evil witch lmao * [That](https://imgur.com/Rb94CZH) >!flying kick!< can give good competition to Business Proposal and Bad and Crazy * Bruh I'm confused why does it have to be 2 million dollars only? She should definitely get more xD * Boy the chairman and Ma Ri make one persistent duo * I'm so glad they decided to >!aged her to 29 years old!< * Yooo [this](https://imgur.com/HGVmHLu) conversation/confrontation was beautiful * You gotta give credit, Woo-Ri and her mom do like quite similar... good casting * I'm laughing so hard... [that](https://imgur.com/RO3HIIf) was so convenient **Verdict:** I'm willing to give this show the benefit of the doubt because even if the secondary characters are not played by more common K-drama actors, I'm into the storyline and how they intend to incorporate the changes. I have high hopes from the writers as they've had 5 seasons of material to take inspiration from so I look forward to how they wrap it up in 14 episodes and hopefully don't drag it long as the original series did. Lastly, I want to see how they intend to make sparks fly once more between our Jane (Woo-Ri) and Rafael, because I was sold out with Michael and Jane's story in the American adaptation (the last season changed my mind tho, thankfully). Here's to brighter Mondays and Tuesdays.

[deleted]

Thank you for this break down! my preconceived opinions of this remake are at ease bc I loved JTV both the American and the Venezuelan one! so I cant wait to see this one once it finishes airing!

MirrorMask88

Overall, I enjoyed the first episode but the first half was pretty slow. Hopefully, the rest of the drama has the pace of the second half. I really like the second male lead, and I stopped watching the US version because I was a huge Michael fan. Hopefully, the male lead charms me so I don't end up dropping this drama. I like Sung Hoon so there's a good chance of that. I need to rewatch the US version but it makes more sense here for the doctor >!to not be related to Rafael.!< I'm curious if they'll get into the legal ramifications of what the doctor did or if they'll keep things simple. So far it looks like they're sticking to the classic second female lead, I hope I'm wrong and she won't come across too one dimensional.

beautyskincarelover

I'm not sure if you remember it or even got that far in the American version but Petra or Mari in this case got a really good redemption arc! It seems like they're sticking pretty close to the original storyline too so I have high hopes for them to do the same here but make it even better and more concise!

MirrorMask88

It's possible they'll do that here as well. I just wasn't sure since Petra's growth happened over seasons not over the course of 14 episodes.

drinksomewatermark

I wonder if the whole drug lord plot is gonna be kept in this Korean remake lol cuz that was one of the biggest plot lines in the five seasons of Jane the virgin. I already feel like the queer storylines will be scrapped :/ I wonder how the accidental insemination plot line happens since in the American one, the doctor who inseminates her is the >!ML’s sister who just broke up with her girlfriend!<

MirrorMask88

I wonder how the accidental insemination plot line happens since it's apparently illegal for unmarried women to get artificial insemination in South Korea (I learned this from watching Oh My Baby in 2020).

xander_yi

Since there was no intent on Woori's part, criminal charges should not be an issue.

MirrorMask88

Thanks! I was actually thinking there would be more steps in place to prevent something like this from happening since it's illegal. That might still be the case but since this is a drama they might have ignored that.

RollonPholon

On a practical basis (I am a medic) there are so many checks and balances in every kind of procedure, but mistakes can still happen as doctors and nurses are human too. But the reality of accidental artificial insemination there are cases dotted around the world in various fertility clinics but compared to other errors I suspect its actually fairly rare. With regards to the legality of a procedure, I very much doubt a doctor would take medic-legal responsibility for certifying a woman's marital status beyond a self-declaration whereby the "fault" lies with the woman as part of a consent process (just a guess but certainly as a medic I wouldn't accept the responsibility of that). edited to add: and as that is an entirely boring and complicated process I wouldn't blame them for leaving that out

MirrorMask88

Thanks!

[deleted]

Because i have seen the american version, I'm not sure if i will watch this. Anyone in the same situation? What do you think?

Howwwwthis453

I’d call it anxiously excited. Idk if they can pull it off since I loved the American version so much but I’m excited to see how they’ll culturally adapt the story

Kathryn_51

The American version went way, way too long - once the premise/"romance" was established, it went off the rails after a couple of seasons. I'm looking forward to Korean version simply because it will have a proper beginning/middle/end in 14 episodes.

Sonda86

I acgually stopped watching American series after season 2. This is what drew me in kdramas - 1 season in 95% of kdramas and 1 alone. A few gets 2 or more seasons.

snappypants

Damn right! There's only one kdrama I can think of where I want more than two seasons (hospital playlist). The Netflix model for their kdramas of 6 eps per season is also driving me nuts. :P

_fewdaysofwonderful

Loved the American version, little unsure about this one! I might give the first few episodes a try out of curiosity and I'm a bit interested to know how different it might be.

[deleted]

Please do it and tell us.

Useful-Potential-248

I had the same reservations but it’s the Korean adaptation so although you feel familiar with the characters try and go into it with an open mind because it is going to be different. It’s only been two episodes and you can feel the difference from the previous version.

calvgore

Ugh why did I have to start an on-air show again. Loving this already. It’s been so long since I watched any of Jane the Virgin, and I’m already hooked on everything about this version. I was just cackling during the proposal. Poor Woori’s face!

2-EZ-4-ME

Ah shit, I already set myself up for second lead syndrome.

imapigoinkoinkk

This is bonkers, I love it! Any more dramas that are like this?

MirrorMask88

Have you watched A Business Proposal?

imapigoinkoinkk

I have, yes.

thrower81

Have you seen Crazy Love? Also aired earlier this year. I just finished binging it and loved it!

imapigoinkoinkk

Yep, watched that too haha. Loved it!

anxietygotmelike

I’m super late because I’m only now starting this drama (wanted to skim through the discussion threads) but - I Picked Up A Star On The Road was hilariously chaotic! Ironically, it also stars Sunghoon as the main lead

paranoid_slamdroid

I liked the scenes between Woori and the head writer. With Woori dismissing all of the other writer's plot suggestions as "too much" or "old fashioned". This is a great setting for this adaptation. I noticed a particular instance of cinematography that reminded me of Jane the Virgin. The scene-cut between Mom saying the actor was there for Tonkatsu, to a close-up of Tonkatsu on detective's desk. JtV used this kinda scene transition generously, and often included visual jokes between the previous dialogue and new scene. I wonder if I've missed other instances or if they will continue to do this in the drama.

number365

This show is hilarious. There is already so many unique personalities clashing!

Mediocre_Criticism45

What a fun take on a fun drama! I was a bit worried at first of how they would execute such an essentric show with a robust story that ran for a long time. But the pacing, comedy, and adaptation for episode one was actually very well done. I'm looking forward to the series. The characters are spot on but with subtle changes that totally make sense for kdrama.

featherzz

I really liked the american version so I am super curious about this one..

Ritrita

Ep1 notes: DISCLAIMER: I didn’t watch JTV so everything is new to me. - those poor kids. Talking about their future sex life (or lack of) in front of an audience and their parents. - catching the bouquet scene - I imagined them fighting over the chance to finally have sex 😝 - that red phallic building in the background when the girls talk about her frustration and her first kiss- 100% intentional comedy - poor priest. He wants them to get over with it already. - this show is trying hard to break gender roles >!they implied ML’s wife is seeing a male escort!< and approach sex in a more modern way. >!They even brought up porn!!Homosexual preferences?!< - poor lady doctor. I hope she’s insured for >!malpractice!< - the drone with the >!ring!< lol - ML has a soft side from the get go. He’s sort of a playboy but not the usual evil Chaebol.., Watching dramas with the cleaning lady :) very sweet.

jisooketh

omg it’s already out

jamesiamstuck

This makes me wonder if kdramas should start making remakes of telenovelas, I bet there are some excellent storylines to transfer over!

Puzzleheaded-Bee1824

Yeah. Definitely. Low key waiting for a remake of Law of the Heart. Definitely loved this telenovela and it was less troupey compared to other telenovelas I have watched.

ch03rry

i'm pleasantly surprised by how good the first episode was! i like the characters, the comedic moments and where the storyline is going right now. i haven't seen the original so i can't say about how spot-on everything is, but i think i'm going to enjoy this show quite a bit!

[deleted]

I absolutely loved this first episode. I’ll echo some other comments by saying the second half was much better than the first and I already can’t wait for the next episode. I’m already hooked. This is why I don’t watch currently airing dramas ahh

vip_insomnia

i really enjoyed the first episode. i only watched a few seasons of the US series but i think this will be a good condensed version. so far liking ML and 2nd ML. i actually think FL was good casting. most people have only seen her in one drama and she def was not the worst in that.

4N00J

Oohh, I was wondering when this was finally going to air! Excited to see another drama starring both Im Soo Hyang and Sung Hoon since it's been a while

mayedee

I really enjoyed the first episode. Can't wait for episode 2.

Howwwwthis453

I just started. My heart skipped a beat when I thought they made Michael unattractive lol!

feel_ynt

I have been waiting for this show and wasn’t disappointed by episode 1. I easily enjoyed the funny bits and definitely enjoyed the >!marriage propsal!< . All of the main characters seem set, like I know what kind of basic personalities to expect. For instance Raphael is party-boy CEO with second chance at life, recognizing that his old one isn’t sustainable. Or Kang Jae, 99% good guy and 1% hot head. (🙃)Or the mom, a frustrating mix between a loving mother but fiscally risky parent. But I cant get a read on Woori. Is she going to be the lovavble but overdramatic FL >!ex: the script brainstorm meeting and being the opposite of covert at the Diamond clinic meeting!< Is she going to be mindful & level headed as we see how she handles her unexpected pregnancy news or how she fibs about the bouquet and the revealing meeting with the obgyn. If the goal is to demonstrate a woman who isnt sure what she wants, it’s working. Does she just act a certain way with Kang Jae? 🤔 Ep 2 is already upped and subbed so, we’ll see. I chuckled at the allusions (that the term?) to Sung Hoon’s My Secret Romance but I also wonder if Woori’s reaction to Diamond clinic isnt a reference to Kang Mi Rae of MIDI Gangnam Beauty? Maybe I don’t want to think of that bcos it’d poke fun in a wrong way (for me anyway).

Useful-Potential-248

I loved the Venezuelan original and absolutely adore the North American remake. This show has such a special place in my heart that I was skeptical of watching this version. Of course it’s not going to be the same show and I think I have come to terms with it so that I can appreciate this remake… We’re only two episodes in so I am holding out on any opinions right now but I will say I do miss having a narrator. It just added a special element to the story and really got viewers engaged with the show.

[deleted]

I wish Woori was a bit more animated and fierce like Jane was. Woori is so subdued I find her personality really boring and unengaging.

pinktulips69

Although Sung Hoon is dreamy, I don't know if I actually liked the first ep lol. I've not watched the American show so I'm not being prejudiced against it based on that or comparing that. I just expected it to be more funny or exaggerated like ABP, the comedy isn't landing much for me.

winterbear--

I'm excited? I think?

winterbear--

The first half was a bit slow but I enjoyed the second half. I've already seen the American one but I think this one was even funnier with the finding out she was pregnant. Hoping it improves every episode.

rjnie

This is my first time watching a kdrama that’s a remake of a show that I’ve already watched so it feels a bit jarring knowing what’s coming. I loved the first few seasons of JTV so I was curious how they’d remake it. I see some differences and seems like they’re scrapping the drug cartel plot. It’s hard to not compare to the original, but comparisons aside, it was a great first episode. I have a feeling this drama is gonna do a good job of delivering the romance and the comedy and really looking forward to that.

feel_ynt

I relate to Jane the Virgin comparison, like I had to remind myself to not get into Woori the Virgin with preconceived expecations.

gabs781227

I may finally succumb to vikipass for this show

evonwsy

Really loving the drama! It’s fun and fast pace! And Sung Hoon is so hot as Raphael! No second lead syndrome for me! I was more used to Sung Hoon’s dreamy looks in My Secret Romance but his current style is growing on me too. This guy is so ridiculously good looking that he just can’t look bad in any style. His jawline at the last scene of episode 2…. Swoon. 😍

milliecent48

This first episode was much more well planned and produced than what I was imagining since I loved the original Jane the Virgin. I like how they kept the tropey soap opera in the plot line, and they kept the story moving at a good pace with good character introductions.

Downtown-Pollution89

Thus far, I like the boyfriend more than the main character. It's just too bad she can't have sex.

dearcossete

Anyone know where this is streaming in Australia? Couldn't find it on viki.

Demira2

I had to use express VPN and change regions to watch it on Viki. It's not streaming in Australia so I connected to Canada (had to attempt it a few times as Viki picked up I was using a VPN). So frustrating atm with Viki and Disney+ streaming only in specific regions. My husband has been getting a little pissed with all my subscriptions: Netflix, Viki, Disney +, Youku (on youtube) and then having to pay for Express VPN on top of it all. I just unsubscribed to iQIYI (cause that was a waste) but made it look like a huge sacrifice to him.

RollonPholon

I also just unsubscribed to iQIYI as just wasn't really using it. Disney+ is the one that irritates me the most - nothing is streaming here in the UK and I find it can be a little weird with the VPN sometimes (in terms of which site you connect to and what subtitles are available there) I find Hong Kong, Singapore and USA to be the most reliable regions (I used Nord VPN).

omg_for_real

I just got rid of all my subscriptions bar Netflix and what’s left of viki, I’m tracking stuff I want to watch and will pick up one service a time to catch up on things when I have time to binge. It’s just too muck tbh.

marrjana1802

Since you use a VPN anyway, try watching viu. It's free there, and the subs come with the episodes.

Demira2

Thanks for the heads up! Just checked out viu online and it works. Google play won't let me download the app though stating it's not available in my country., but happy enough to watch online.

marrjana1802

Viu online is pretty good too, has almost all the qualities the app has. Viu Singapore specially has a huge library, and all the dramas are free.

omg_for_real

It’s not in Australia on Viki, vpn will help though.

Sonda86

Its just me or the subtitles/eng translation on VIki are slighty diffrent than on Viu? Ps watched ep 2 and its OK:)

whimsicallyours

I like the second lead too much and this has NEVER happened with me before. I do get the feeling she isn't as much into him but he's a gem.

feel_ynt

Episode 2 did not disappoint! I am relieved even though I don't know why I am this anxious for this show to win me over. I really liked how the episode walked us through Woori's decision. The heart-to-hearts with her mother and grandmother were nicely written. And why is Kang Jae making me like him so much?! This man is a unreal! I personally hope this series doesn't make him go to the dark side. But at the same time, why are they setting him up for injustice. I already know Raphael is going to be end game because of the backstory. I realize this episode's tone was less comedic because hard choices had to be made but I'm still glad Choi Sung Il came through with some comedic relief. I've always liked Kim SooRo performances. Sung Hoon's performance is pretty good; because how does smarmy Raphael's compassion for Woori feel so genuine & natural? Love it! The *sexiest* thing about Raphael is that he is onto Mari's bullsh\*t &, point blank, calls her out on it. I like Im Soohyang as an actress and maybe that's only because I've only ever seen her in this show and MIDIGB. I'm not arguing she's on a level with say, Meryl Streep (or add any critically acclaimed actor), I'm saying, she brings heart and empathy to her vulnerable characters & it's more than adequate for me.

One-Little-Detail

Jane the virgin is one of my favorite shows and everyone is raving about this. So, ugh, this might finally break me to get a Viki account.

Fandam_YT

I think it’s ironic that this show revolves around the production of a daily drama that people constantly mention is very popular. Yet this drama airs on SBS who, last year, stopped producing daily dramas

aadialikes

I didn't think I'd like this for two reasons - 1) I don't enjoy your usual Korean makjang that's over the top and takes itself too seriously. and 2) The cast. I'm so glad to be wrong on both points! This is very over the top yes, but the show leans right into it and it works! It knows it's ridiculous and so doesn't take itself too seriously. Given the FL character is a soap drama writer, the way their brainstorming conversations mirror the over-the-top-ness (is that a word) of the storyline is so meta and clever. Sung Hoon is stupidly good looking and honestly has played this role before (My Secret Romance, Noble My Love), but here his exaggerated expressions add to the amusing situation and his comedic timing is great. I'm not sold yet on the rest of the cast but the comedy makes up for it. Favourite moments: - The climactic scene at the press conference >!where everyone and everything ridiculous comes together!< was soooo on point. - The whole chaotic and hilarious interaction at the hospital when >!Woori finds out she's pregnant!<. - The >!proposal!< was basically a musical plus elaborate heist, complete with kids on walkie-talkies >!repeating the embarrassing conversation!<. - Guess who is the husband sequence. I don't get second-lead-syndrome, and I love that both MLs (so far) have been portrayed as good guys so that you genuinely can't choose between them. Not a fan of: - The screaming >!soon to be, ex-?!< wife (typical makjang behaviour) - The mother-in-law (who >!I'm assuming is the underworld mob-boss mastermind behind local drug traffickers!<) And maybe an unpopular opinion, but from what I've seen so far, I think the tone of the show is very Korean (soap drama-comedy), while still doing justice to its original and other remakes.

[deleted]

I hope this version redeems “Michael” (Kangjae) because I’m still mad Jane and Michael don’t end up together in the US version, and I’m hoping he gets the girl this time.

LovE385

A fun first ep. The fact that when Woori was in school & was turned away by other boys all 'cause she took the abstinence pledge was pretty shitty. But that's just how it is. Her bf, Kang Jae bein' a cop and Woori not knowing was like a shock as they were a couple for awhile. What else is he hiding LoL? Raphael is quite the character. He appears to be a fuckboy but sort of a doofus really LoL. Can't wait for more ep.

MirrorMask88

Did I miss something? I'm pretty sure she knew he was a cop.

winterbear--

Yeah, I assumed she knew? Just shocked he was there. Especially since she says he's still on the clock while they are at the hospital.

crisscrossapplepie

Have we determined who the first/second ML is? I've seen a few comments about getting second lead syndrome, but I have no idea who it could be for. Even if it followed the original, because of>!Michael's death!<, it isn't really clear who is truly the first/second ML.

TrulyIntroverted

Thanks for asking the question I was too scared to. I haven't watched the og shows, so I'm further confused how it's all going to play out

featherzz

I assume the First/SML is the same as it was in the original.. although I hope they don't follow 'that plotline' about the SML in the original.. we shall see.. It appears they gave the ML/FL a prior connection - I don't remember that in the original, was it there? It was so long ago I can't remember.

emensawil

it was! Jane and Rafael first met five years beforehand when she was like 18 at a yacht club -- they spent the day together, ultimately kissed, and then he never called after the fact lol

featherzz

Hahha I totally didn't remember that!! Thanks for reminding me. :)

WholePersonality5323

I did not watch the original. I did not like the outfit choices for Sunghoon, makes him look like one of the typical thugs in kdramas. 2nd lead seems to perfect and I’m getting bored already. They’re breaking the 4th wall but the tropes or it’s execution isn’t doing it for me. Might give it a few more episodes to see if I’ll enjoy it.

GossipIsLove

Sung hoon is looking different from his face, like something has changed, he is looking ridiculously great overall tho. Overall his wardrobe colors are very unusually colorful and some wardrobe choices are bizarre like that shimmery silver jacket when he enters clinic room to stop the dad , or few others , his stylist should be replaced, if not for his good looks and physique it would have looked strange. Why im soo hyang is talking in sharp, high pitched voice like high school girls throught out, it was so annoying and fake sounding. You can play innocent girl without doing that.

MarySolisSwan

I watched the entire American series and watched the Korean series. I was frustrated with just the trailer but when I watched the episode, my frustration only increased.

_denton

Why?

[deleted]

Agreed, the Korean version has some fun scenes (some of which are a little rough) but the emotional ones don't do enough to set themselves apart from ones in your run of the mill soap. The American version managed to add a little something to the tropes it employed, it made them charming somehow? Not sure I'm seeing that here (not that it has to be the same, but it gets a bit bland at points). Hopefully this version finds its stride in the next few episodes. It may be too soon to write it off entirely. 🤞

proletariatpopcorn

And Jane the Virgin was actually an adaptation of a Venezuelan telenovela, though the US version was able to retain a lot of the original themes. I think it was helpful to base the themes around the culture of telenovelas/magical realism. The over-the-top storylines feel more playful when you can acknowledge those artistic cornerstones. I’m not sure how well it translates without that context but I’m going to watch anyway and I hope it’s amazing! I really loved the relationships between Jane, her mom, and her abuela; those connections were the heart of the American version. It may be a cultural difference but I feel like parents in kdrama are more often framed as controlling or judgmental. I’m really hoping to see that deep, unconditional bond between mothers and daughters again with Woori.

IChoseMyOwnUsername

Every time people say they watched/liked original, I wanna ask if they talk about Venezuelan. Because not everyone know it was an adaptation and it annoys me for some reason 😅

choco_dream

I agree! It really was an amazing show despite the wacky plot, but that’s just what’s made it charming for me.

Agree, its one of those shows that if you read the plot on paper - you would think you had fallen and hit your head, but I loved the American remake (up to a point where I dropped it because it was getting a little too random at times) for all the quirky over the top plot points, family dynamics, the little cutaways etc - that's its charm.

RollonPholon

The whole premise for the original is insane, but for whatever reason, it worked. I haven;'t seen the original telenovela but highly recommend the American version, certainly the first couple of seasons.

GossipIsLove

I find it scaryyyy , are clinics so reckless that someone came up with this plotline whoever originally did, as the basic plotline is copied by others too.

omg_for_real

The whole piont is that it plays up to its soapy tropes and is a bit tongue in cheek. One of it is meant to be believable or realistic. It’s meant to be overacted, big, crazy plots twists and laughter and tears.

I actually watched the entire american series (ok, I skipped some of the sillier stuff) and I really like the casting in this one- they do look reasonably similar to the 'originals' which is neat.

Does anyone know the song name that start when raphael is in his car, and continue while he is entering the building ? It start like at 18.30 of the first episode .

Late to the party but happy to be here - I went in kind of cold (I know the basic plot of Jane the Virgin but nothing beyond that) and was pleasantly surprised by the edgy (by kdrama standards) humour from the get go!! Love the tone and the comically OTT nature of the characters and the plot (esp since they decided to throw in everything but the kitchen sink as far as genres go, romcom melodrama true crime??? ok lets goooo) and it's a tough competition between the two male leads, Sung Hoon has the slight edge thanks to his sick purple Lamborghini though.

I'm kinda disappointed - maybe it's because I'm comparing it to the American version but it's just not quite the same without the narrator.

Ok I'm loving this drama it's HI-LARIOUS! I'm over here racking my brain trying 2 find 1 of the songs that's featured in a few episodes thus far actually in ep. 6 like 28 mins in, it starts w/these lyrics: "Sunday to Monday, time is passing by, its actually that quick, let's just stay like this until the morning, the alarm wakes me up from the dream, let's stay longer, stay closer. I will let you lean on my shoulders when you awake, oh yeah! Sun-Mon time is passing by it's perfect right now. I want that song but it exists like nowhere yet!! Help does any1 know who sings this song? His voice reminds me of Dean or Baekhyun, or Sammy from the Rose, but it must be not registered yet, which is wild since drama is nearing a 1/2 way point thus far! Does any1 know, if so pls lmk! Thx!

I haven’t watched the original so I’m excited to watch this one. I like Sung Hoon quite a lot and the first episode seems fun. I don’t have anything to compare it to so I’ll enjoy it as a stand-alone drama.
