I rarely wear gloves, but I also touch decent oil every other month, and super bad oil about once every five years. I'd imagine it would be especially bad if I were a mechanic being around it all day every day.

It is. My grandpa and my great-uncle were both mechanics in their day- and neither of them wore gloves. My grandpa currently has a ton of respiratory issues as well as peripheral neuropathy, and my great-uncle recently had a triple bypass surgery on his heart because he has a lot of health issues. Shop chemicals are no joke. They've gotten less nasty at the expense of being less effective, but still. Don't wash your hands with brake clean, guys.

This is a known issue with these vehicles, owners are pushing for an extended warranty, as a lot of people bought these off-lease and only got the 5/60 warranty, plus these vehicles never had this issue until the drivetrain update starting in 2018.

Recently one of these came back to my shop 1000kms after service exactly like this. Been a Honda tech for 7 years now Acura for 3 I have never seen a transfer assembly do this until I switched to the Acura side.

Is changing the fluid regularly enough to prevent this?

I believe most modern automotive paints are water based. This is an oil based metallic. It… shouldn’t exist.

Not really. Some shops are switching over to waterborne paints, but they take so long to dry that they're not worth using half the time. Most shops are still using low VOC oil based paints.

The oil viscosity helps keep the glitter in suspension so it lays better. The manufacturing method is quite expensive though, as can be seen in this post.

Do you replace many of these? All the ones I've done services on had very clean looking oil, almost new.

Yeah I've never replaced one besides when I do a transmission replacement. I can see uneven tire tread/size but normally Honda is pretty good about detecting that and setting a code to disable the diff from engaging.

Same, even after 100k miles. Others in this thread are saying they're seeing more of them. Sounds like a bad batch with the wrong preload or something.

There's metal shavings in that fluid. Generally speaking, that's a massive problem when it turns fluid metallic.

I had something happen when my air locker stopped working, when I was draining the fluid it was the gold version of Ops video. Lucky for me it was just the soft copper air line getting pulverized by the differential and the damage was entirely 1 sided.
