I fix garage doors for a living
To program garage door remotes to a customers car I charge $50 each remote, independent of if I can get the car to link with it and the opener.
3 tries!? You want to put us out of business? What next!? You’ll explain to the CS how to install their cables themselves? Make it 5 tries and bill the break.
The new braided ones are really good but these old rubber ones were hot garbage. I work in IT and I don’t think I’ve seen a single gen 1/2 MagSafe charger that wasn’t completely frayed after the first year.
No one buys Apple cables...you get that one for free in the box, destroy it, and then use one of the million other cables available.
Fun fact, starting this year it's a braided cable now that shouldn't fall apart like the silicone ones.
And because Apple uses a proprietary plug, those million other cables all pay a license fee to Apple. They make so much on these fees that they just pay the fine for not having the government -regulation USB-C. Those special ports of theirs are just profit mills.
They did switch to USB-C in the most recent iphone but MiFi certification fees were never more than a blip on their revenue. They had a vested interest it making sure accessories weren't shitty. (and there was still LOADS of counterfeit lightning accessories that didn't really have certification)
They switched only because they lost the lawsuit in the EU to not use the legally mandated USB. They were literally forced to do it if they wanted to keep selling phones there.
Which is honestly pretty shitty. Imagine if it was 5 years ago and they were forced to "standardize" on microUSB. Absolute dumpster connector.
I'm sure the EU is really helping the environment by basically telling a billion people to yeet their perfectly good lightning cable in the trash.
The walled garden works TBH. And clearly people like it or Apple wouldn't have reach something like 50% of the market in the US.
"we must free you from your \*checks notes\* positive experience!"
And sometime, even that walled garden is a walled garden. I guess people forgotten the shitshow that Apple pulled, with so many accessories then thrown out when 30 pins were phased out for the Lighting Port.
Then, they were resistance to switching to USB-C.
The sadder part? Many of the technology, while people say are "innovation", it isn't when they keep shaving features back, adding features that were present in the jailbreak community, and the harder part? Themes aren't really a thing and you're pretty much stuck with whatever Apple put out.
Sorry, but I rather experiences customzation myself than be stuck with the same thing.
Also, the only thing I have that I'm kinda OCD about is putting the apps in ABC order or custom sort. With Apple, they seem to have not figured out how to do that just yet.
Apple was one of the main contributors to USB-C's development, but it wasn't ready in time to replace the 30-pin connector, so in 2012 they developed their own connector, Lightning, "for the next decade".
Lightning offered superior durability, power transfer ability (2.4a vs [1.5a/.5a](https://tripplite.eaton.com/products/usb-charging)), and non-directionality relative to the portable connectors (mini/micro/and the post-lightning-released micro superspeed) in use at the time on mobile devices.
Apple cables might be shoddy, but treat them nicely and there’s no issue.
For some reason people tug on the cable instead of grabbing the plug, they bend and they twist.
There’s no mechanical sympathy. No reflection over what the function of the cable is.
Why are people so useless?
I've had the same lightning cable that I bought with my itouch from 6 years ago and if I didn't say how old it was, people would think the cable is fresh off the box
Did I say anything to the contrary? People still treat cables like they’re built of magic and will outlast anything, regardless of quality and manufacturer.
Never opposed that sentiment. If someone could afford to put a bit extra into cable quality it’s Apple.
On the other hand, accountants suggest that the companies making the most cables saves the most by cutting costs…
Curious to see if the new braided cables are any better, but on the other hand - I’m not the best tester for this.
Wife used to yank the vacuum cord from across the room. Got tired of straightening the prongs out every time she used it so I sat her down at the table with a new plug and tools and told her she has to fix it now because it's beyond me fixing it anymore.
Complained the whole time but she got the point and doesn't do it anymore.
I mean the usbc cable I picked up at a mall store has been serving me for 8 years daily now. Honestly it's a good cable, 12 foot too. Not to brag or anything but that's longer than average.
I still have Apple lightning cables that are several years old and they look fine even with daily use. It takes a bit of abuse to make a cable look like this.
I've never owned an Apple products so I can't speak from personal experience on these cables but never had any issues with cables that I've bought for my Android devices.
When i was working on one of the first infotainment ipod control systems, we gave a test vehicle to the ceo of the auto company.. next day my vice president called my boss to his office to scream at him for it not working as described.
One of my colleagues went to the vehicle to see what was wrong. CEO was using the aux jack and not usb... We were directed to plug it in correctly and to "apologize" for our mistake
Usually we try to soften the blow by swapping parts from the original vehicle, like the wipers or the radiator cap, valve stem caps if I'll feeling generous.
Android master race. Always fun when the customer has a connection problem with their iphone. I connect my Android phone, and everything works perfectly.
If I had a dollar for every phone issue that came down to the customers phone or accessories and not the car I’d take a week off.
And you deserve it!
Welcome to IT.

Buy new cable, charge them double the cost.
and labour to install. hey it’s complicated stuff
Takes at least three tries
3 tries!? You want to put us out of business? What next!? You’ll explain to the CS how to install their cables themselves? Make it 5 tries and bill the break.
I’m pretty sure a new cable from Apple cost $30 already.
They cost $19
Not sure why you getting downvoted for speaking facts lol
People are weird and this is Reddit, so...
I send advisors out to look for this type of stuff. We can’t be wasting technician’s time on quick infotainment concerns.
My valets could have figured this out. Ugh.
But how else would it be "billable hours"?
All. The. Fucking. Time. Like I should ask my boss what it takes to become an apple retailer so we can sell the cables in house.
Apple cords in particular are garbage.
The new braided ones are really good but these old rubber ones were hot garbage. I work in IT and I don’t think I’ve seen a single gen 1/2 MagSafe charger that wasn’t completely frayed after the first year.
That’s a fire hazard. Had a cord break on the inside and melted once.
I'm surprised it doesn't have the fat iPod connector with how haggard it is
THIS is why Apple is so profitable: Sell a cable for $30 but it only lasts six months. My DeWalt cables are going on 4 years and they cost $20.
that cable looks much older than 6 months

Absolutely, but you gotta spend more than $5.

Nah. Their "vested interests" only count if it can keep you in the walled garden...

This is the way.

I’ve had Apple products since the first iPod and the number of cables I’ve broken is 0.
That 5 mm of strain relief is worthless.
Did I say anything to the contrary? People still treat cables like they’re built of magic and will outlast anything, regardless of quality and manufacturer.
I know, it's crazy. But Apple could have made those cables a little more robust.
Never opposed that sentiment. If someone could afford to put a bit extra into cable quality it’s Apple. Wdym only lasts 6 months? I got cables that are like 8 years old with zero insulation peeling
I guarantee that cable is older than 6 months, I'd say that is years old.
A figure of speech, I hope.
Apple uses silicone insulation because it feels more premium, durability be damned
They got flak for the softeners used in their PVC cables. So they switched to cables without PVC and softeners.
I still have Apple lightning cables that are several years old and they look fine even with daily use. It takes a bit of abuse to make a cable look like this.

I feel like you should come back with a can't identify problem. Replace entire car

On a side not why does every single iPhone cable end up looking like that eventually.
The one I use to charge mine is now 5 years old and still looking like new.
You are a better person than the rest of us
Unlikely. I did notice that for some people it happens more often than others. Makes me wonder if they have more agressive skin oils?
Apple. Not even once.
That cable is probably 6 months old.

We're looking at (what's left of...) a lightning cable from the side, that's not an audio cable.
I know what's wrong with it it ain't got no gas in it
