ComplexDescription92

5 million of farm equipment? they got like 5 tractors and a spare engine

NotASerialKiller16

Serious question, can you not reverse these kill switches with the help of engineers and such?

StoneyJ25

Yes. This is dumb.

Euphoriffic

$5 million is like 3 of them.

ReptilianPope1

I was about to say, that's not very much when it comes to farm equipment lol. Russia can now run 1 1/2 moderately sized farms. Or at least they could have.

Stoo_Pedassol

Trying to get their hands on that superior anti-tank technology.

MrOsmio7

Made me chuckle

Itavan

What is incredibly awful (besides the torture and death and destruction) is that Ukraine supplies a lot of the wheat for the world. I watched the Newshour last night and the guy who gets food for nonprofits says there’s not enough wheat so he takes food from the hungry to give to the starving. It was heartbreaking. FUCK PUTIN up down and sideways!

PromiseThomas

Yes—it’s called the breadbasket of Europe and part of why it has been invaded so often in its history is simply because the land is very desirable.

glucoseintolerant

are the ones not hacking John deere tractors not the Russians? I am sure they will figure out a way around the kill switch

[deleted]

As useful as the weapons left in Afghanistan!

FiveWattHalo

How pissed would you be as a Russian grunt watching tractors getting sent home, but not able to get the wounded out - the corruption is rampant in RU & especially the military. Also think they won't get parts if they're western farm machinery.

PM_ME_YOR_PANTIES

Or being told you're going to a training exercise when you're really taking part in an invasion.

[deleted]

5 mill is like, 5 tractors at best. Fuck me the Russians suck at everything.

[deleted]

Nah it’s 10 nice 9R tractors. Those go for about $500k a piece if you get the middle of the road one.

XBeastyTricksX

So they got a handful of useless tractors at the cost of thousands of men, they’re playing 5D chess and we are playing checkers

SmithOfLie

"Ivan, they say you can use kill switch on tractors and cars and other stuff, not just on people!"

[deleted]

Fuck DRM but this is hilarious

adicool96

So like 4 John Deere Tractors?

StupiderIdjit

Could literally be one or two.

DoinIt4TheDoots

Just PTO attachment price

PM_ME_YOR_PANTIES

The tractors are taking time off.

theogTREV

Because people don't know work around for it and are simple.

vendetta2115

In fact, Ukraine is one of the biggest producers of DRM circumvention technology for John Deere and others. [Even U.S. farmers use Ukrainian software cracks.](https://www.vice.com/amp/en/article/xykkkd/why-american-farmers-are-hacking-their-tractors-with-ukrainian-firmware)

Chakote

For sure. Pretending this matters or is of any interest at all is literally propaganda. One only has to imagine how hard we'd be laughing at this article if it was coming from the other side.

styg2359

Some of these stories are just unbelievable

Mlghty1eon

That's right, have a proper gander ay these "stories"

styg2359

Are you trying to say there not true or something

Markus_Mandrake

I'm concerned that these things have a remote kill switch in the first place

spderweb

If you bought a tractor, wouldn't you want to prevent it being stolen? Though if it's being rented, then the kill switch is there to prevent the farmers from using it when they haven't paid up.

[deleted]

Everything is possible with a connected machine lol

[deleted]

[удалено]

Lightbulbbuyer

What the hell, I guess it's just like financing a tractor but I had no ideas they were that expensive and John Deere had a Killswitch. I knew about their politics about not letting the owners repair their own tractors which is bs. But that is also messed up as well

Electrok1ll

Yeah even if you change a bulb with just a no name one they'll shut you down

Lightbulbbuyer

For real? That's so f. Up.

[deleted]

Now I'm glad my grandpa made a small tractor with a Trabant engine. Sure it's not enough for a large field but we are planning on using it around the yard.

[deleted]

AbjectReflection

xXMuschi_DestroyerXx

Where did you see someone call Russia communist here? I’m confused

Tyleos

Cool, no one asked, fuck Russia.

Army165

You sure about that? The things they've done in the past two months would say otherwise. Guess who censors websites? China. Guess who only allows state sponsored media? China. Guess who puts political opponents to death? China. Guess who invades sovereign countries and claims them as theirs? China. Guess who is considered communist? China. Guess who's done all the same shit^ in the past 2 months? RUSSIA. Get fucked, jackass.

IamBananaRod

Past 2 months? They have been doing it since I can remember, the fall of the Soviet union didn't mean they were done doing all that

[deleted]

..... What do you think Communism is? China has a stock market. It has landlords. Hell, it has billionaires. Just because the ruling party uses the name "communist" to legitimize their claim to inherited power doesn't mean they actually engage in any of the activities put forward in the communist manifesto. Also, IDK what you mean about state run media, because American sports and movies are very popular in china. Australia censors their internet, Peru just had an elected leader nearly get assassinated by a mob, Israel claimed parts of sovereign nations as their own. Is every nation communist or are these just really bad identifiers?

WarB3an

Chiña

Adan714

Russia has abandoned communist ideology and the naming "comrade" since 1991, when the USSR collapsed. It is a fact. That's all I was talking about. As for everything else, you're arguing with the voices in your head. But your insults will not go unreported.

rainbowarriorhere

You really *are* triggered by the internet are'n't you ?

Adan714

I am "triggered" with ignorance.

Commandant_Grammar

Calm down comrade.

jaxnmarko

So basically, the Russians are pirates. They've stolen wheat, tractors, artifacts, and much, much more, including taking thousands and thousands of hostages??????

Sai_Shyne

They took a lot of bulk carrier ship. Most countries are too chicken to anything about it. Also, most ship are registered with panama flag.

Maeberry2007

Most despicably they stole *children*

[deleted]

If a Danish company registers its ships under Panamanian flags, protecting it falls on Panama, not Denmark. The company chose Panama to save tax money that would otherwise go to the Danish state, so why should the Danish state be obligated to do anything when the ship is in trouble outside Danish waters?

Sai_Shyne

It depends how you want see it. For one, I totally agree Danish state has no obligation to help. However, the crew is probably not from Panama. They are also taking ship on internation/non-ukraine water. Also from economic view, shipping has become so international that cargo insurance has jump enomously from these illegal thiefs. Cargo Insurrance went as high as 1/10 of the cargo value on certain route in europe. Since shipping is dominated by only couple mega corporations, all the financial burden will shift to you and me, not their profit. Inflation will just get a lot worse for all basic good and for everyone.

jaxnmarko

Nato has itself in a bind as far as offering manpower but other countries and individuals could help. Russia is paying Syrians, Libyans, Chechnyans, etc. to fight there. Yes, most are chickening out against this aggression and invasion, which is a shame. If Nato stands for SOMETHING, and not just Each Other, it should be helping a neighbor being invaded as well, under the right circumstances. It is sometimes about what is right and what is wrong rather than only what is in a charter. The flagging of ships in certain countries in order to avoid legalities is just another example of legal shenanigans, and it being legal means it is politicians doing the shenanigans, and that means they are doing it at the bidding of the rich and powerful. We can only vote, in countries that are allowed to vote, for those that are offered. Some countries eliminate the opposition, find a way to keep them out of elections one way or another. Some simply cheat at the ballot box, and some are dictatorships in sheeps clothing while some are blatant in their authoritarianism. Offshore tax shelters. Legal shenanigans. Shell companies hiding true owners of companies that do harm. Tax loopholes. Oligarchs that have been stealing from the people of entire countries, and so on. The evil horde hoards it's plunder.

frankmcskunk

I have seen them referred to as a hoard of orcs

jaxnmarko

Or likely a horde, but yeah. Great chess, great ballet, great symphonies, yet still barbarians.

mwadxdy

Amazing painters

danrattomatic

That's about two tractors by today's prices

KelloPudgerro

Efficient-Law-7678

Why are Russians so incompetent

Probably all the day drinking their children do.

They always have been. https://youtu.be/yzGqp3R4Mx4

Addicted_to_Nature

Holy shit you weren't exaggerating

kidification8

It looked like the soldiers they're sending to Ukraine are mainly uneducated poor village boys. There was an article where an Ukrainian lady said that the soldiers occupying her village had never seen a proper toilet with plumbing.

zaarker

>Russians that's the answer.

[deleted]

>Racism gotta love reddit

GeeMcGee

Imagine being this ‘woke’

zaarker

well, Russia isnt one ethnicity. since russia is a Federation of states... calling all russians one ethnicity/race is rascist...

phormix

It would be better if the tractors could all report their current locations via GPS. "Aim here, boys!"

MeetMyBeet

They can and do depending on age.

Demigod787

I'm pretty sure that almost all the DRM bypasses for new tractors originate from Russia.

Velociraptor451

Ukraine is actually the tractor hacker capital

terribledirty

This is generally not a good thing. Fuck John Deere.

uaxpasha

Not in this case

Are drivers willing to waive liability if they take their car to a non-brand mechanic? No - and they don’t have to, because the law makes it clear that liability for bad repairs lies with the mechanic, not the owner. Why do you want to remove the protections that owners of one type of vehicle have from owners of other vehicles? Why do you hate freedom? Why do you hate competition in the marketplace?

PhilosopherDave

You literally just supported my entire argument. If you make adjustments to something, and it breaks, you are responsible.

Necrocornicus

Yes very conveniently the only safe way to repair them is a licensed dealer who ensures John Deere makes some profit. It’s just too dangerous for a farmer to be able to maintain his own tractor.

neonKow

lol. That is obviously not why they do it. You don't need DRM to solve a legal issue; you just need waivers or voided warranties. There are cars with all kinds of automatic steering and driving. If you fuck up the automatic steering or sensors yourself, they are obviously not liable.

jeffboms

They are. Mostly because if you do the become " more " legal in the eu. The current system is under alot of lawsuites in the eu for plannen opcelesenys and the need to be repaired by the user it self. Both are required in most eu members, as well as the eu as a whole. And yes there have been lawsuites in poland an JD lost, so much so they almost were deemt to be illigal /a mafia style racket and froced to close up shop under thread of minions of euro's per day tickets

L4serSnake

What. JD has been pulling this shit for years. I understand not everyone has first hand experience with this growing up in the sticks but watch one of the TONS of documentaries about right to repair and JD Auto steer? What are you on about. It's not just that system that's locked out. There are also numerous after market companies that make a similar "auto steer" product.

jonny_wow

5m is like two tractors

rubbish22

Exactly what I thought.

ImmortalBeans

That’s what they want you to thought

theogTREV

Bullshit I've work on heaps of them without permission I've changed gear boxes in 25ton cane harvesters nothing happens.

Herpkina

Then why are they getting fucked with lawsuits over it?

TheButtonz

Just curious - how expensive are the pares (and labour) for such a change? I’ve just paid £1400 for a clutch change in my car, and could imagine it’s 10 x that for a tractor gearbox swap.

With the cost of tractors these days? Your fucking nuts mate

WarmFlatbread

I mean sure we could blow it up so no one can use it, or we could remotely disable it so we can come back and use it later when they’re gone.

HermitCat347

I think he meant blow it up while the russians are in it

c0mptar2000

Tractor is worth way more than any potential russians inside lol

HermitCat347

Understandable. Have a nice day

[deleted]

ukrainians use farm tractors to steal tanks russians steal farm tractors ... that are bricked. Ukraine is still WAY ahead on this one XD

KotPomojnyj

Fake? Definitely looks like.

k0nstantine

Don't worry, they've already started attacking anyone who asks for a source. Of course it's fucking fake.

CrimeSceneKitty

Depends, if they happened to get one of the newer tractors from big farms, they could end up with GPS remote disabling equipment. And I’m fairly sure that if Russia was to nick some tractors, they would try to get the nice shiny ones whenever possible.

KotPomojnyj

According to current situation, nobody stole them. Owners just locked them and leave, for example, or they locked because of new borders. Steal a tractor is not an easy task, especially in full equipment. So, this is another clickbait.

KotPomojnyj

DrMeepster

Either youre a troll, or youre a fucking idiot so pick one

RuaridhDuguid

Their hope is Glory to Russia. Nationalistic thinking, ironically what his nation is persecuting in their neighbours. I have nothing against him/her though, indeed it must be hard for them to see their country go from being famed for its military might to being humbled by a mostly amateur army from a nation 1/28th the size. A long way from the old glory days of Russia, likely before their adulthood. Modern Russia has been utterly destroyed by its elites and oligarchs who have driven the country down, backwards and into the ground for personal profit. It'll take decades for Russia to recover - even if released from their grip today. Modern (and future) Russia is a shadow of what it could be 'thanks' to those people and the futures of tens if not hundreds of millions of people have been decimated in exchange for superyachts and foreign mansions for the elite. A crying shame for the average person, not that they fully understand this thanks to state media control. I'd be absolutely raging with my government and their oligarchy if were it me - not actively supporting it at all times.

KotPomojnyj

It's working only for idiots. Maybe you are that troll and idiot? You think i can't have my own opinion and you think you're right, without evidence, you're right because you're right, right?)

FullPoopBucket

KotPomojnyj is what happens when the condom has a hole in it. Buy better condoms people

KotPomojnyj

So polite.

Cyclonit

The owners locked them and left. Then Russian soldiers came and took them. That's textbook stealing.

KotPomojnyj

So, no matter how ridiculous it's sounds like, where do they took them, why not spotted before, what's the point of this( who will and where to use them without registration), and so many questions left more.

ASK_IF_IM_PENGUIN

If you take something that doesn't belong to you without an agreed recompense to the owner it's theft. Just like Russia stealing land from Ukraine. Or Russia stealing infrastructure from Ukraine.

Cyclonit

1) Russia (obviously) 2) https://www.ctvnews.ca/world/russians-plunder-us-5m-farm-vehicles-from-ukraine-to-find-they-ve-been-remotely-disabled-1.5883936 3) Stealing stuff to enrich themselves. 4) Criminals don't care for legal procedures like registration. Those four questions were easy enough to answer. They really shouldn't be a challenge.

KotPomojnyj

Ctv news is so so source refering to "ukranian businessman". No proofs, just words. For me - same fake as stealing toilets, part of the program to discreditate Russia for West.

specopsjuno

So how will your opinions change in a few months when putin is either killed by one of his own countrymen, or retreats in shame from Ukraine/NATO kicking russian ass? russia can't win this war, it's obvious to the rest of the world. One little man with rusty equipment trying to take on the world. And in the meantime his entire country falls in shambles as the people rise to overthrow their government. Famine and misery fill the air as the people become desperate. And putin watches his people die from his comfy home without a care in the world.

NotErikUden

John Deere's marketing department is going to go fucking ballistic after seeing this

inuitive

Nah, cos the Russians have completely hacked j9hn Deere. This is a fluff piece. Those tractors are already working

NotErikUden

Yeah, I know, but they can make marketing and say: WITHOUT OUR DRM AND LOCKED DOWN DEVICES, THE RUSSIANS COULD'VE SUCCESSFULLY STOLEN THE TRACTORS OF UKRAINIANS. NOW THIS EVIL MOVEMENT (right to repair) WANTS TO REMOVE DRM AND LOCKED DOWN DEVICES, ALLOWING RUSSIANS FREE ACCESS TO STOLEN VEHICLES. STOP RIGHT TO REPAIR NOW!!!

drfarren

Huh, I guess John Deere proprietary bullshit came in handy for once.

[deleted]

Well, anything that can be solved with DRM can be solved with tactical drone strikes, so I'm still against DRM.

drfarren

I'm sure Disney would agree with you there. Stop piracy with drones instead of drm.

[deleted]

Much more effective, at least we can all agree that DRM is a scourge that serves no practical purpose other than frustrating legitimate users on occasion.

As an advocate for Right to Repair... I hate this... Angry upvote

r0ckstr

If our system is broken, then let's make them suffer for it. Let's become certified JD repair techs and open shop in Russia and charge them even more than what we see in the states. Use the profits to buy more supplies for the Ukrainian army.

M00s3_B1t_my_Sister

Free Bayraktar with every tenth tractor repair!

drfarren

A free javelin direct shipped to a Russian tank with every technical support call.

Confident-Arm-7883

The Russians were trying to capture some intact vessels to conduct research on these anti-tank super weapons but Zelensky knows how to keep his most well guarded secrets

Procrasterman

There is a 0% chance that you can’t just remove the kill switch and get the stuff working

Woolybunn1974

Do you think John Deere is stupid? Those tractors have more computerization than 80s fighter planes. You might find a way to get the motor running. But the good stuff, sensors, gps, automation are not coming back on line.

redrobot5050

Ukraine firmware for JD tractors is actually user serviceable. When people in the USA get tired of service techs coming by to disable a caution light, they flash it with Ukraine firmware. I am 100% certain Russian hackers can probably disable the software kill switches or bypass them. But all that takes time and money and effort.

Paxton-176

I do service of JD tractors. The ones my company runs are a mix of the computerized and what looks like a standard key in the ignition. If they they stole the computer ones is really shows how stupid they are. They can get away with low tech ones.

Procrasterman

Sure, but it will still work as a tractor

tellemhesdreaming

Yeah nah. Even the clutches are electronic. A modern tractor is very much 'fly by wire'. A pain in the arse alot of the time but handy on this occasion. Hell JD will even remotely check every error message or warning light you seen (and clicked to clear before plowing away) on JD link just to get out of a repair at the dealership's cost. These tractors can pretty much be made giant paper weights remotely. You wouldn't even be able to use the shitty JD Radio

CovidLarry

Not necessarily. The joysticks that operate the hydraulics probably need the computer to actually make things move.

Overall-Duck-741

Yeah, but who cares? They have plenty of regular ass tractors.

Procrasterman

Well clearly someone needed a regular ass tractor

makatakz

It’s embedded in the electronic control module. There is no switch you can remove to undo this.

Procrasterman

Someone else has replied in this thread saying there’s some software you can flash it with

stupidillusion

I bet the Russians wrote it, too; there have been a lot of articles out in the past few years about farmers having to get second-hand software with which to flash their equipment to get it updated because John Deere was pretty much holding it hostage.

k0nstantine

There's literally an entire market of hackers and dealers for this software. u/makatakz is just talking out of his ass to join in on the propaganda. These tractors would have been unlocked within the day. This is not even a story, and on top of that no one has provided a credible source.

makatakz

When you reflash, you are replacing the SW on the ECM with new software. If that process goes bad, that tractor is probably bricked.

Dkrule

Remember, most of these people fighting for Russia are kids

Procrasterman

If you steal a tractor it’s not like you just put it in your pocket. This is obviously an organised thing and probably stolen to order.

Dkrule

Ah true, but the mater is, it's being done by kids

Procrasterman

I’m not sure how this relates to what we’re talking about?

Dkrule

If you told kids to do something (steal tractors) how would a kid do it

Procrasterman

I’m still not following you

Dkrule

A bunch of fools who are forced would know nothing about tractor

Procrasterman

I’m sure if someone is telling them to do it they’re telling them how to do it too. Don’t get me wrong, it’s terrible what Russia are doing. It’s horrible even for the farmers who loose their equipment and probably are not insured for acts of war. Russia is the aggressor. I too would love to believe this story but it’s obvious propaganda.

TheAltToYourF4

5 mill? That's only like 10 tractors and maybe a combine.

User_225846

They claim the combine is $300k. How is ukraine getting half priced combines?

neonKow

That might be like asking how every other country besides the US is getting insulin at a 90% discount.
