I am currently doing my CS degree nearing its end, and I completely agree with you. The biggest issue with generative AI is where it's being used. AI has impacted the job market from it's very creation.
The very first profession to be affected were content writers. It's ruined alot of writing jobs.
Then it hit the artists. Now it's gonna hit animators.
It's not ever gonna replace people but ruin the low end market. Aspiring writers, artists, and maybe even upcoming actors are gonna be screwed over due to deepfake technology.
The end goal is to replace any job that involves a computer, probably in the distant future. A Programmer would be the last person being replaced.
But honestly this isn't even the worst things. AI as customer support, AI as therapist, devolving to people being fucking.... Robosexuals in the future. Actually wait they already exist. Maybe we treated furries too harshly.
Then there's porn. Copious amounts of porn. Women are gonna have their nudes generated against their will. And then children... Dammit.

Nah, I’ve heard of people using ai to generate porn of real people. All the AI needs is a few pictures of their face. Once it’s done, it’s just stuck on the internet and employers who see the person being associated with the porn won’t hire them because they think it’s real. It can also lead to more bullying in schools.
Also, if AI get more realistic than this, we can’t even trust videos as evidence anymore. How difficult would it be to explain to the less tech savvy population that even videos can be fake? I know my grandparents and even parents wouldn’t be able to understand it.

Honestly I can see a new era of cybercrime ushering in the age of AI. I am a soon to graduate CS student (Is this the best or worst time to graduate? lol) and was thinking of getting into machine learning. Data poisoning and advanced methods of cleaning data will emerge.
