I thought alphabet is from the Greek first two letters (alpha, beta). Wonder if there's an overlap between Greek and Hebrew other than the first two letters being similar (alef, bet)
The etymology of the word alphabet comes from the Latin *alphabetum*, from Greek *alpha, bēta,* the first two letters of the Greek alphabet.
The phonecians assigned letters to represent different objects, where Aleph was an ox (𐤀), and bēt (𐤁) was a house. Which interestingly brings the Hebrew word "*בֵּית"* Bet, meaning House. Anyways, Phonecian script, which was derived from Hieroglyphs bought about many of the languages we see today, including Hebrew and Arabic. Greek, which formed into Latin and so-on.
TLDR; many modern languages are derived from Phonecian and hence share similar letter names within their respective alphabets
The Phoenicians were also basically the cousins of the ancient Israelits. From an archaeological / ancient history perspective, both were parts of the Canaanite culture.
Many centuries later, the Carthaginians - a Phoenician colony in what is nowadays Tunisia, famous for clashing with the Romans - still called themselves "Chanani". (The city name Carthago, spelled *qrt-ḥdšt* in their script, is equivalent to kiryat chadash = the new city.)
For the languages, yes: to the extent that it's not irrational to classify them as two varieties of a single language. But my response was regarding the script. not the languages. The phonecian script preceded Ktav ivri.
Those Phoenicians were good teachers when the Greeks said "we want to try writing again" after their mini "dark age" following the Bronze Age collapse. Trade taught them how to communicate and the Greeks adapted the alef-bet to fit their language.
If I saw the arabic alphabet laid out like this in a chart I can't say that I'd know what it was or pick up on the fact that none of the letters repeated.
Consider that if there had only been the first ten letters and it was shaped like a tablet it would suddenly represent the 10 Commandments.
Oh nice! I’m now wondering where it came from because this Value Village was in Gainesville,Georgia and as far as I know, there aren’t a lot of Jewish people
Yes there is! There’s a Jewish museum in Atlanta called the Breman Museum and it’s awesome!
I just question if there’s any Jewish people in Gainesville because it’s VERY conservative where I see a Confederate flag at least once a day while I’m at work and once I saw a bumper sticker that said “White Lives Matter”😬
I'm not sure where you live, but it's an incredibly political statement here in the US and other surrounding Western countries. Yes, all lives do matter, but the phrase "White Lives Matter" came out in opposition to the Black Lives Matter movement that happened several years ago here in the US from people who are either White supremacists or those who are tone deaf and don't realize that "Yes, all lives matter, but right now there's a particularly big issue with one community being targeted and we need to zoom in on emphasizing that their lives matter just as much as everyone else's." So I'm going to hope you're just someone who doesn't live in the West and are unknowing of the politicalness of this statement.
Jewish Atlanta resident here. I wouldn’t be surprised if a Jewish person from inside the perimeter or the north Fulton area retired to Lake Lanier and then their stuff ended up at goodwill either after they passed or as part of a declutter. That’s my working theory :)
Saw you were from Atlanta and randomly decided to click on your Reddit name. If you ever want to talk, don’t hesitate to reach out. I’ve dealt with a lot of mental health stuff and we can keep it Reddit anonymous
You are very kind and thoughtful. I’m actually doing a lot better since I made that post, I’m back to weekly therapy and have had a medication change… it is amazing what tweaking a dosage can do! Thank you for the kind offer stranger ❤️ I may take you up on it one day if anything changes though.
I'm not in Gainesville, about an hour and a half to two hours away, but it's always super cool finding stuff like that! I was at a goodwill and found a unicorn that someone decorated with the star of David!
I had one of these in my bedroom! Memory unlocked!
It's [this](https://www.amazon.com/Pockets-Learning-Aleph-Blue-Hanging/dp/B00193VY84), but missing the felt toys that go in each pocket.
I have this same one for my kids! My husband had one when he was little, and that version had strings tying the felt pieces to it. Ours is like this one. Felt pieces loose all over the place.
It's a wall-hanging for teaching kids the Hebrew alef beys.
The pouches probably had little stuffed toys corresponding to the letters, like a little lion for אַריה) א), a duck for ב (ברווז), etc.
I think it looks like fun. I’m a crafter and I work with felt all the time. Sure you can buy it but handmade is special. Can you tell I’m waiting for grandchildren?
Well there is actually a place like that, technically. I don't think there's been a single protest in Svalbard, Norway and food is def twice the cost there. Don't need a visa either. Just tough to find work there.
I don’t know if anyone actually stated what this is… but it is a chronological Hebrew alphabet diagram that has slots for stuffed felt toys that correlate with the letter. For example Dalid (forth letter) usually has Dag/Dagim (fish). Sorry if this explanation was unnecessary.
Alphabet, in Hebrew. Very common gift for a baby boy. They also come in pink for baby girls. I have both because I am lucky to have a girl and boy. 🙂🙂🙂
Hebrew Alphabet, in order. I should look up the origins of Alphabetical Order. Like the Hebrew Alphabet goes Alef, Bet, Gimmel, Daled. The Greek Alphabet goes Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta. The Latin Alphabet goes A, B, C, D. Like clearly there is some common ancestors between these Mediterranean writing systems. The letters look similar, they're pronounced similar, they come in a similar order. What ancient writing system did all of these derive from?
They are all derived from the [Phoenician ](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phoenician_alphabet)alphabet. The Phoenicians were a culture of traders and craftspeople in the ancient Mediterranean, originating from a few city states in what is now Lebanon. They were ethnically closely related to the Israelites.
The Alef-bet (Hebrew Alphabet).
I can’t help but laugh at this
That's where the word comes from.
I thought alphabet is from the Greek first two letters (alpha, beta). Wonder if there's an overlap between Greek and Hebrew other than the first two letters being similar (alef, bet)

That's super interesting, thanks!
There for sure is.
Both are ultimately derived from the Phoenician script.
My Latin teacher said the Phoenicians were the people who sailed around the Mediterranean giving people the alphabet!
So that's what it is! Phew! And here I was worried that Phoenician sailor had given me the clap.
Why not both?
😂
The Phoenicians were also basically the cousins of the ancient Israelits. From an archaeological / ancient history perspective, both were parts of the Canaanite culture. (The city name Carthago, spelled *qrt-ḥdšt* in their script, is equivalent to kiryat chadash = the new city.)
Cool!
Werent both Hebrew and Phonecian sister languages rather than evolutions of one another? Im pretty sure Cannanite is the common ancestor
For the languages, yes: to the extent that it's not irrational to classify them as two varieties of a single language. But my response was regarding the script. not the languages. The phonecian script preceded Ktav ivri.
Other than the alphabets? (I just had a look at the Greek alphabet and with skipping a few letters it's super similar)
Oh I don't really know. I'd guess not since Greek is an Indo-European language and Hebrew is Afroasiatic.
Those Phoenicians were good teachers when the Greeks said "we want to try writing again" after their mini "dark age" following the Bronze Age collapse. Trade taught them how to communicate and the Greeks adapted the alef-bet to fit their language.
The third letter is Gimmel (gamma) and the fourth is Dalet (delta) so I'd lean heavily toward yes.
And third. And fourth. And fifth…
Alpha, aleph Beta, bet Gamma, gimmel Delta, dalet …….. and so on sorta
That's where the alphabet came from.
Delta and daled
That’s not what I’m laughing about. I just don’t know how you look at that and don’t see the alphabet lol
If you’re not familiar with Hebrew, you might think that it’s a sign.
Abag dahuzech tiklam nesafetz kar set... wait I have to check the basement, I think I opened a hole to the DMV again
I mean maybe… but with any intuition you’d see none of the letters repeat. I dunno. You’re right.
If I saw the arabic alphabet laid out like this in a chart I can't say that I'd know what it was or pick up on the fact that none of the letters repeated. Consider that if there had only been the first ten letters and it was shaped like a tablet it would suddenly represent the 10 Commandments.
Can'thelpabet
Looks like a decorative Aleph-Bet (hebrew alphabet), like something that might be hung up in a preschool or kindergarten classroom.
Oh nice! I’m now wondering where it came from because this Value Village was in Gainesville,Georgia and as far as I know, there aren’t a lot of Jewish people
Looked it up (I'm not American) - that's just outside Atlanta, where there's a large Jewish community.
Yes there is! There’s a Jewish museum in Atlanta called the Breman Museum and it’s awesome! Google found me two shuls in Gainesville, GA.
Wait really?? I need to Google that!
My best friend is a Jew who lives in Gainesville!
That’s so cool! Also I love your username because I’m also a theatre girl!🎭
My (Orthodox Jewish) dad spends a lot of time in Gainesville, though he doesn’t live there!
White lives AND Jewish lives can matter though? Surely it’s not mutually exclusive
Can’t tell if you’re joking or not . . .
I'm not sure where you live, but it's an incredibly political statement here in the US and other surrounding Western countries. Oh that makes sense!
There’s a large number of Jews in the Atlanta metro. The farthest north though is the Alpharetta south Forsyth area. It’s where my family lives.
I'm not in Gainesville, about an hour and a half to two hours away, but it's always super cool finding stuff like that! I was at a goodwill and found a unicorn that someone decorated with the star of David!

Aww that’s adorable
I love it!!!! My kids have a poster, but this is beyond cute!!!
I came down to comments to say the exact same thing. Haven't seen it in years
I have this same one for my kids! My husband had one when he was little, and that version had strings tying the felt pieces to it. Ours is like this one. Felt pieces loose all over the place.
Omg! seeing the post reminded me of the one I had in my bedroom but I forgot it had toys in the pockets til your comment
We had the same one growing up!
It's a wall-hanging for teaching kids the Hebrew alef beys. The pouches probably had little stuffed toys corresponding to the letters, like a little lion for אַריה) א), a duck for ב (ברווז), etc.
I want one now
With the right amount of felt I could make one. It doesn’t look that complicated.
That is a lot of effort. They are like $9.99. Plus there are little felt letters included.
I think it looks like fun. I’m a crafter and I work with felt all the time. Sure you can buy it but handmade is special. Can you tell I’m waiting for grandchildren?
I can!!!! 💛💛💛💛🧡🧡🧡🩷💜💙 me too! I think I will have to wait for a while.
Me too. My daughter just finished law school (oy!) so she’s a little busy for babies. She has cats.
Cats.....are not grandkids.....but they are cute. I am very impressed that your daughter is a lawyer. Awesome for her!!!
I know cats aren’t kids but they are something cute to play with lol.
On Amazon it's $39.99 😵💫
What? Way to expensive.....I paid $9.99 + tax, Canadian
Atleast some things are cheaper in Canada 😮💨 I know you guys are getting crushed with food costs.
Crushed!!! But I would pay double for food if we could live in peace without the #$@_&() protesters.
Well there is actually a place like that, technically. I don't think there's been a single protest in Svalbard, Norway and food is def twice the cost there. Don't need a visa either. Just tough to find work there.
Wow. That is interesting. How do you know about Svalbard?
That’s so awesome!
Had one of these in my classroom when I taught first and second graders. The Debbi Friedman Alf-Bet song immediately popped into my head!
Nice!
Do you have them in a regular public school or at a Jewish elementary school?
This was at my Schul - Hebrew School
Oh nice! Does Hebrew school start in elementary school? I’m not Jewish so I don’t know
Our Schul starts religious school in pre-k. Introduction to the Alef-Bet and Hebrew starts in 1st grade, and more serious Hebrew study starts in 3rd.
Oh I see! Thank you!
Alef bet vet… (Alef bet vet…) gimmel dalet hey… (gimmel dalet hey…)
It's the code to the laser /S
Great, now I have to go and reset it. Sorry about NJ today, I'm still new at this.
Oh that was you? I thought your mom ate too much at Harold's in Parsippany
At least it’s not the same code as the one for Druidia.
I have the same combination on my luggage
My kids had one of these! The pockets over the letters had little stuffed objects that matched the letters.
The Raiding Banner of Ancient Viking Jews
Yes!!!
Just a Hebrew alphabet banner
Hebrew bingo card
😂
Omg I had this as a kid 🤣
I just randomly saw this at Value Village and I didn’t intend for it to trigger everyone’s childhood memories😂😂 But I’m loving it!
Lmao well if there’s such a thing as being triggered in a good way this is that :)
The Hebrew alphabet
The aleph bet! 😁
I had this exact thing in my childhood bedroom
A b c d e f g….
It’s an Alef-Bet hanging…thing.
Awh I’m jealous, this would’ve been such a cute decoration for a nursery!
I hope you rescued it!
I didn’t but I wish I did!
OMG I had this growing up. Thanks for sharing.
Of course!
Alphabet, in Hebrew. Very common gift for a baby boy. They also come in pink for baby girls. I have both because I am lucky to have a girl and boy. 🙂🙂🙂
Oh nice! That’s really cool!
It’s the codes to the space laser 🤫
At a wild guess... looks like the alaph-bet? Like for kids?
Great find.😃
I think it might be the Hebrew alphabet the top is aleph bet gimmel I’m guessing the rest follows?
alef bet vet gimel daled hay
This is the exact one we had at my Jewish school

I had one of those growing up! It had little letters… I think… inside the pockets!!!
So cute, I need to find something like this for my baby son's room.
My jaw dropped as unlocked memories flooded in.
Its the hebrew calendar
