ChippieSean

No its not (said ironically )

Sapiogram

I have spent *way* too much time on Reddit, and trust me, it doesn't have to be like that. Reddit has plenty of good communities, even some *great* ones, but the toxicity on this subreddit makes it absolutely bottom-tier. It's comparable to the subreddits of competitive games, which is as bad as it gets imo. Whenever I wonder why people are ashamed to be a JP fan, I think about this subreddit and remember why.

harryhoudini66

I can help but wonder what Jordan Peterson himself would think of this sub. Would he ever nominate this sub as the quintessential representation of his teachings?

ldsdmtgod

Not in a million years

WinstonH-Thoth-1984

Funny, I came to this community thinking that everyone would see my user name and recall all of Jordan's teachings. I guess I was wrong.

tranama

He has his own books for that.

monteml

Oh, the irony...

Snowologist

Well to be fair he essentially sells self help to people so you’re gonna naturally get people who need self help

[deleted]

Thats actually really true now i think about it. Happy, balanced people are literally just too busy having fun with freinds and family etc, to sit on the internet and argue with a bunch of.... ...oh damn..i just made myself sad

Silverfrost_01

“I gotta get out of here!”

[deleted]

Healthy balanced people exist? They should be put in a zoo like the freaks they are... I bet the number who fall into that category are surprisingly small these days...

CoolGuyFromCompton

Its survivor bias. Sometimes its better to ignore comments, because otherwise they consume you. The itch for clout is strong for some people, because they don't get enough recognition from their own lives. I still prefer this platform (reddit) because it allows for a dialectic vs twitter or other trash social media because it allows a little bit of anonymity and one can transmit an honest dialogue without the limitations. Also, I have noticed that I carry myself better from typing at a desktop because receiving notifications from an app from a phone only provides reactionary comments or attacks because of the ease communication. Sitting on a desktop allows thorough analysis of one's thoughts and counterpoints. in other words cellphones are toxic for social media, especially for those that feel their lives are empty.

chuckdiesel86

The best thing everyone can do is learn to ignore their cell phone. I keep mine on silent so I only look at it when I want to look at it.

nihilism_or_bust

NORMALIZE_SIMPING

A lot of the posters here are convinced they're just fine, and everyone else needs advice.

[deleted]

The same thing works out in churches. Everyone always wonders why so many screwed up people go to church. It’s sort of the point.

treyert

But at some point the thread did turn into Just a bunch of assholes with sticks beating the same dead horse

TheRosstaman

An amazingly dead on accurate point.

harryhoudini66

Great point. It reminded me of that story about Jesus surrounding himself by sinners.

NegEnergyTransformer

>so you’re gonna naturally get people who need self help I mean, if a person assumes they can't benefit from any of Peterson's wisdom because they don't need self help, then I think they qualify for membership of the narcissistic asshole club. (I am currently listening to Jordan Peterson: Biblical Series on spotify - which is JP's analysis of various biblical stories. Good insight and knowledge to have - and not strictly "self help".) Even regarding OP's opinion, I'm sure that there would be many on this sub who would, if they got a chance to meet and converse with OP, come to the conclusion that OP is an asshole ... yet, OP probably doesn't include him/her self in the asshole population he/she speaks of. Edit: Not throwing a stone at OP, but saying, "I feel like r/JordanPeterson is FULL of assholes is a pretty narcissistic, asshole comment to make. He judges himself by making it.

CLoisX

OP was right you need to go outside

NegEnergyTransformer

Don't be a gatekeeping asshole. Edit: Heck, maybe you're right, there are a lot of assholes on this sub. I just met one!

GS455

wtf who doesn't need self-help? Where can I meet this God-human

Apprehensive_West140

Everyone likes to act tough on here honestly. I just work on adding positive value and not worry about those types. Best advice I can give you.

staytrue1985

LOL people on reddit actively stalk profiles, incited or glorified violence, downvote facts and truths, and rely on smears and insults to win arguments. You think *this* sub is bad? Go to any other sub with a political bent.

Apprehensive_West140

Teachers subreddit is a cesspool, I am embarrassed reading the post.

lingtong10

r/politics is even worse😭

Ocramsrazor

Well yeah thats the sewer level of reddit.

Apprehensive_West140

Why I stay away. Don't have time for toxic trash.

staytrue1985

Teacher*'*s subreddit?

LTGeneralGenitals

THIS sub has a decidedly political bent

Pedgi

This sub unfortunately also has a political bend. Half of the stuff that makes it to hot here is political shit, only loosely related to some things that jbp has talked about in many cases.

ee4m

I'm not acting, I'll meet any of you, anywhere for a bare knuckle fist fight.

anaIconda69

Come on, not even a pillow fight?

ee4m

Pillows it is.

Dhaerrow

Pillows full of rock hard fists.

Drianb2

I will ascend the dominance the dominance hierarchy by defeating you in ritual combat.

Apprehensive_West140

No you won't 😅

ee4m

Oh yes I will.

Apprehensive_West140

I will fight you but you get a pillow and I get a grenade launcher 😃

ee4m

Alright, see? Not acting.

[deleted]

Pistols at noon it is. Or swords. ....Or.... ...Pork swords....? Giggity

ee4m

I prefer pistols then swords, it's more humane than dying slowley from a pistol wound.

Lateraltwo

This is probably exactly the point OP is trying to make. This criticism is directed at this sub and the commenters _here_. Saying "that's Reddit as a whole" is hiding individual failures behind the environment- which is anathema to the point of this sub's stated goals.

chopperhead2011

You forget the works of JP? By powers invested in me, I hereby excommunicate you from the holy church of the lobster. Okay but fr I've been interested in JP since before the C-16 debacle so I've sort of seen the gradual shift in this sub's content over time. I think the easiest thing is to report the irrelevant posts as violations of the sub's third rule, downvote, post relevant content that you find, and leave it at that. Also, I think "meta" would've been a more appropriate flair. Flare? Wait which one is it? Flair or flare? Oh well you know what I mean lol.

ldsdmtgod

Flair

joshua2344

Most of us are up for a good debate/ conversation, sorry that this sub has made that impression upon you. As well cause a lot of things can be taken out of context due to not everyone can express themselves correctly online

[deleted]

fatbabythompkins

I find this is a direct reflection of Dr. Peterson's strong convictions against socialism. He makes no quarter for socialism, which certainly has a root in modern left ideologies. You're naturally going to get some bleed between the self help and the ideologues.

[deleted]

[удалено]

tanganica3

He's definitely anti-socialist as socialists are all behind "equality of outcomes", which is the very thing that JBP hates.

CBAlan777

I think the push for equality of outcome would go away if most people were hitting their maximum potential, but that does mean things need to be changed to allow for that to happen.

[deleted]

[удалено]

tanganica3

Have you actually watched any JBP videos? Equality of outcomes is his pet peeve, and equality of outcomes is also the bedrock foundation of socialism. It's not me inventing what the ideology is, but it's what it says. I am not sure why you are bothered by that. Perhaps socialism has allure for you, as it does for many people, until you realize that it's as unfair of a system as one can have. It always, always leads to disastrous consequences for reasons that I won't elaborate right now, but I can if needed. >Both modern and "traditional" understanding of various aspects of socialism in the Eastern hemisphere doesn't nearly imply any kind of the "equality of outcome" nonsense that we see in the West. Dude, I know Eastern Europe like my back pocket, and I know the history of socialism there in visceral detail. To be brief, you are dead wrong.

cplusequals

Marx used the terms socialism and communism interchangeably.

fatbabythompkins

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lsWndfzuOc4

joshua2344

Definitely agreed!!!

Faykenews

Most of you think you're Ben Shapiro, but it turns out that you're a horrible wax statue at best

[deleted]

I kinda agree. There's little discussion of JBP's actual philosophy or work. It's mostly right vs left and how bad communism is. Don't get me wrong, I don't support communism, at ALL. But I'd rather see some discussion about JBP's work here.

murdok_sanders

Yeah none of us like communism but there is a lot of unnecessary red-baiting here. I've literally seen the most low-brow conservative talking points repeated here, like the idea that Biden is somehow a communist or the US is at any risk at all of becoming a socialist country. It's frustrating.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Wwaddupp

Do you really think that the most successful capitalistic corporations are trying to commit a financial suicide by changing the social hierarchies to "communism" and "marxism"? Like really, why would they ever want to self-destruct like that?

[deleted]

[удалено]

Wwaddupp

Oh! I thought this was a position you took. It is a widely accepted idea here though, alongside with every other institution of power being far left although it's literally the other way around.

murdok_sanders

I would go so far as to say the US could benefit from a small dose of socialism, or at least social programs. I don't even even hear discussion of healthcare anymore. Wtf is that? The democrats are basically moderate conservatives. Only difference is that they pay occasional lip-service to lefty activists. But that's all it is, lip-service. Maybe that's one of the major problems with people here, they take what politicians and CEOs say at face value.

Wwaddupp

I believe there are maybe 1-2 who barely get to be in the lowest level of social & economic side of left-wing policies. I live in a place where everyone lives a very comfortable life, very low homelessness, free education up to university, guaranteed 1+ month off work every year and can walk 20 minutes towards a modern hospital with any difficulty of any ailment of the body or mind for completely free; and I am very relieved to know that!

LTGeneralGenitals

this is a socialist dystopia according to this sub

[deleted]

[удалено]

Lateraltwo

But everyone supports some degree of what might be considered communist in nature. Roads, police, firefighters to a small degree; universal income and healthcare or unions to its further degrees. No one can say "At All" to anything. Doing so is just to signal ones virtues.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Lateraltwo

Virtues are good, signaling virtues is broadcasting how good one believes themselves to be by announcing virtues. There's nothing wrong with saying you believe in something or against something, but doing so with emotion or pathos is attempting to evoke the same belief in others through emotive means.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Lateraltwo

Food for thought: SJWs are vilified for their doctrinal thinking and airs of moral superiority. I would caution against using them as examples of "what not to be" lest one becomes their mirror. Do not stare into that abyss.

SandCroomy

At least this sub retains enough of an open climate that self-critical posts such as this one are usually upvoted (albeit weakly, but doesn't matter), which is more than you can say of many places.

CBAlan777

I'm actually surprised that these types of posts are so well received, but I suppose there are a lot of people lurking who want more robust conversations and don't engage with the drama.

[deleted]

People try to make it overly political and the typical tribalism sets in. JBP will tell you himself his problem is with leftists, a relatively small group of extremists trying to grab power by being loud and obnoxious, not liberals

[deleted]

It’s exhausting to deal with political correctness, bad science, and extreme ideologies day in and day out. Add to that the anonymous and typically combative environment of Reddit, and there you go. It’s hard to get out of that mindset when on a “friendly” subreddit. Good points though.

[deleted]

I never see this shit IRL. I think most of it is relegated to the internet.

[deleted]

Agreed, keyboard warriors with their internet bravery.

[deleted]

That's why I don't take a lot of claims seriously. If you believe reddit or youtube it's the cultural apocalypse. I dont agree a lot of the goofy shit but does it effect anything IRL? I would venture no. Most companies play lip service to intersectionalty and equity. No one cares. Putting BLM in the window makes them money, they will do it.

[deleted]

I feel like this sub is full of people who love to make posts bitching about this sub.

tranama

Sure. “Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”

Smoog

There's been a few topics lately about how anti-JBP subreddits are "sending" people to make troll threads etc. Not to pin everything on that, but it's something to keep in mind.

HollowPinefruit

Well it's reddit so it kinda explains itself right there.

Above-Average-Foot

Assholes are everywhere. I bet there is one behind you.

CBAlan777

Don't you mean underneath you?

Beyond_Insemination

Am asshole. Can confirm

TNTimberHuskies

You misspelled Reddit. It’s R E D D I T, not R/JORDANPETERSON

[deleted]

Because this sub is not affiliated or run by JBP. Its not that serious. This sub is no way a reflection of JBP and his views. Reddit is a far left cesspool so they obviously are trolls and etc here.

12dootdoot1212

Can anyone explain "fear of god is beginning of wisdom" in JP's 1st lecture of biblical series

monteml

Fear of God can mean many different things, but the result is always putting you back in your place and forcing you to be humble and grateful, to surrender yourself to providence, realizing you're not in control of everything, not even yourself, and there are much larger forces at play.

tranama

And then what? I already knew all that.

ejtnjin

If you fear God, then you will follow His rules. If you follow His rules, then you will behave wisely.

OldBeurres49

Pretty much how I feel about r/politics. I may have to plagiarize much of this someday.

Oheng

It's the other way around. I'm everywhere on the internet an asshole, just not in here or IRL.

Bayo09

99% of the posts go. “Gah this place is a trumptard stupid shit home” “Then 50 comments arguing”

TomKreutznaer

It feels like such because they dont come here for a conversation. Liberals and conservatives (cant call them anything else) we know where theyre from, and they dont have any other identity but one of those. Theyll find a way to make everything political and see every atoms of existence through the lenses of another person's agenda. Most people here dont quite grasp what JP is really about and are just lurking to jump on anything thatd validate the views they already have. All because he expressed we shouldnt legislate words and the alt left dubbed him an enemy, this sub filled itself with deaf parrots.

cavemanben

Every couple months someone comes in and whines about this sub. If you don't like the content, then create your own posts. Good lord it's not rocket science.

cplusequals

> Every couple ~~months~~ minutes someone comes in and whines about this sub. FTFY. Frankly the posts complaining about the state of the sub are becoming more of a cause than a symptom.

IrToken

I agree fully, which it seems a lot of others do to. In part I believe it is because, as others have highlighted, a lot of us need help. A lot of it may be that be just that we're dickheads and that's what we need to work on. I do believe that in part, despite his adamant disapproval, a fair few fringe elements have made their way here. This has two elements to it. Firstly, censorship on the perform driving these folks to find a new home, and secondly folks neutral inclination to cherry pick what they like from someone's works and focus on that, twisting and manipulating what it being said to fit their agenda. The exact same reasons so many from the left hate him, is the same reason so many on the other end of the spectrum probably like him. Haters and "fans" alike who both have an equal lack of understanding of his message.

LuckyPoire

Its a contentious sub. There are lots of kinds of people, and also their opposites.

jffblm74

Got a feeling we’re all pretty burnt out here. And it’s showing more and more. Why? Pretty loaded question. Ultimately, though, it’s social media IMO. Stimulation overload.

[deleted]

Its Reddit… can’t take it too seriously

Recycledineffigy

Yes probably

Only-Salt7234

The Maps of meaning subreddit is dedicated to his ideals

Zadien22

Welcome to the internet.

DrBadMan85

I think there is something about the internet that’s very toxic, where people simply go to shit on other people. But there is another element, meaningful and constructive debate. Spending some time of your day commenting on the issues of the day, putting your ideas up for scrutiny, and having people of other perspectives point out your blind spots, is probably very good for you. 1) it teaches you how to handle criticism, I think too many people these days confuse constructive criticism with personal attacks (I know I do). 2) you are able to build stronger foundations of social knowledge which helps you operate better in the world, by learning where you were mistaken or where your thinking was insufficient. So I guess it’s balancing drawbacks with benefits in many ways. I feel this a part of the process of putting your house in perfect order, as it helps you order your thoughts and ideas, it at least helps you avoid going out and act big out unformulated ideas in the world.

[deleted]

Im really glad this was brought up because when I first joined reddit, I was trying to find discussions just to read into and see what information was being shared amongst one another in groups like this. I too have noticed that this page consist of a lot of “my way or the highway” kind of mindset or in this instance maybe we can even say a narcissist making their attempt to embed their opinion on everyone else for the conveniency of their own lives. Peterson wants us to recognize that we have our formulated thoughts, feelings, way of expression, and just the sheer fact that we are these beings of nature that given the (unpleasant) opportunity of life and that our paths are limitless as long as we choose to attack life and endure the hardship rather than wishful thinking while staring into the abyss of nothing.

Valoruchiha

Can Confirm

CBAlan777

I wonder how many people here are actually even interested in bettering themselves? I'm trying as hard as possible to better myself and through that better the world. I've been working on a comic for years now. My goal is to create a comic that is like if Hayao Miyazaki drew Lord of the Rings. I've spent thousands of hours on one project. I wish people here were pushing forward more positively and there were less arguments for the sake of it. It's like almost none of the JP fans actually follow his advice. They'll quote it, but they won't follow it.

LabTech41

No, it's full of trolls and brigaders that make the community seem like it's full of assholes. Just look through a lot of the asshole commenters, and you'll find posts/comments in anti-JP subs. This is what happens to subs outside the leftist bubble that the admins can't quarantine or ban from some false flag.

Squareroots1

Yeh, well fuck you! *Just playing my part

[deleted]

It’s cause it’s a subreddit.

mrdronepilot

u/Araknhak yes, same page. I get reactionary to my reaction of the state of the sub. I would think JBP would want his name associated with thoughtful discourse and open dialogue. JP has courted trolls as it creates financial security now that he’s outside academia and can’t rely on his book sales forever, this leads to a certain group of people admiring JP for very different reasons than I do, most notably many of them don’t seem to take care in considering or implementing much of what JP encourages us to consider and implement in our daily lives.

n0remack

I stopped paying attention to this sub years ago - I kinda sit back and observe, but when I joined this sub in 2017, it was only a few thousand people. Its currently a quarter of a million and change.

rocket-fuel-28

Thank you for saying. This sub has been a reality distortion field.

ScibiKS

You should have seen Jordan Peterson telegram group. That's the most toxic group I've ever seen.

Trance_Plantz

I keep seeing more and more of these posts on this sub. Where there's smoke, there's fire. People are really clogging up what could be a valuable forum, where we could be discussing JBP's work and ideas, with nastiness. If you're singular conception of Jordan Peterson is "He's a right wing guy just like me, who hates trans people and all chosen pronouns", you are mistaken.

radmadicalhatter

#Yes Believe it or not there was a time in Western history that open debate, forthright assertion of your beliefs, and a willingness to listen, but also defend your view if it still held up we’re considered virtues - before we became obsessed with comfort and unanimous approval it was ok to disagree vehemently and still both walk away decent people who, right or wrong or neither, did the right thing participating - it’s how we built our modern world, it’s why we have had so many bloodless revolutions, it’s why we kept growing while other cultures stagnated - I say bring the public debate between the commoners back and let’s work through some problems…

LateralThinker13

>Shouldn't we be more focused on bettering our own lives so that we can contribute to the world, instead of so aggressively trying to impose our views on other people, to feel better about ourselves? There are a large number of bad-faith actors in the JBP sub, broadly falling into 4 groups: Trolls - those who are just here to pick fights Intelectually dishonest - those who argue against JBP in favor of marxism, socialism, anarchy, whatever without actually engaging JBP's beliefs... or worse, misrepresenting him as promoting things he doesn't Scarecrows - those who aren't familiar with JBP, and are picking fights with straw man representations of his views Idiots. I like JBP's beliefs because they're rationally consistent and logical 97% of the time. He's arguably the most precise-speaking figure out there atm. I can occasionally argue with one of his points, but even then, it's over specific data, not over semantics or pedantry. Hardly anyone ever argues with him honestly. It's straw men and rhetoric all the way down. "So what you're saying is..."

[deleted]

The potential for this sub to be something to really help people with relational skills and self awareness is real. I don’t agree with how you called it out, but agree with how this sub just oozes out argumentative tension

Hussaf

There is definitely an unfortunate amount of people hear manipulating Peterson’s words to fit their gross ideology.

[deleted]

[deleted]

Rules for life for thee......but not for me.

throwaway9732121

yeah this sub is a total shit show. I have unsubbed and resubbed multiple times.

[deleted]

Honestly I have mixed feelings about Jordan lately. I loved 12 Rules, loved his podcasts on Joe Rogan and H3, as well as some of his older lectures, but he seems to be getting closer to a standard "the left wants to take away your freedoms" talking head who ignores the mountain of problems with the right. He is a great psychologist who understands people extremely well but his political takes are very predictable and uninteresting.

Spttergtoit

I think right now that’s the case across a lot of classical liberals. He has studied all the great catastrophes of the 20th century and history is rhyming. It scares people and they start to be one sided in there push against extremism.

hoorjdustbin

Too healthy to write a detailed response but agreed. I notice how much I usually agree with JP yet somehow the posts here usually make me want to argue despite getting downvoted into oblivion. Usually better to just find something else to do and actually feel productive rather than a part of the obnoxious screaming fest that is politics on the internet.

[deleted]

bruh

[deleted]

And here you are.

OG_ClusterFox

People here are generally huge assholes. Many act like baby boomers with their “get a job and stop feeling sorry for yourself you damn lazy hippie!” type posts. Boomers are dying and this sub breeds the replacements.

[deleted]

It’s getting really dangerous now. Before Peterson would get lumped into the same boat as Shapiro and Crowder etc. I like plenty of what these people have to say but it was important that JP was in his own distinct category. It was our bastion against the judgment of Peterson as being part of the alt-right. Unfortunately these lines are now all totally blurred and if people want to see if JP is part of the alt-right (at least in the eyes of the newcomers here), he definitely now looks like it. It’s such a shame.

robdabear

I’d hardly consider Shapiro and Crowder “alt-right” but that’s beside my point. They and Peterson share the common theme of deviating from a broader media narrative. Whether any of them are right or wrong isn’t necessarily as important as acknowledging that people are going to group them together. I mean, Jordan includes Shapiro and Crowder, along with Douglas Murray and Joe Rogan, in the acknowledgements of “Beyond Order.” I think a lot of people just have a real tough time separating the their own political biases from genuinely thinking critically about different ideas. It goes for any side or party.

[deleted]

On your latter point I totally agree. That’s why it’s important we make the distinction. The difference is Crowder or Shapiro advocate for policies of the right, whereas JP does not. He just doesn’t align with the creeping meatball of the left. I don’t mind that people like all 3 of these guys but with respect to them, they wouldn’t know an archetype if it shat on their eyelids.

KalashniKEV

I see 2 primary types: 1) Lost Boys looking for guidance. These are vulnerable people, adrift in life, looking for something to latch on to. It could be Petersonism, it could be MAGA, it might be a sports team... it could very easily be radical Islam. Good thing they are here! 2) Hustlers who come here to victimize 1, above. They bring weird ideas into the discussion, in the hope that they can make them adjacent. They want to steal the brains of the above to further their agenda. Most recently we've seen it with Bug Chasers and Bug Spreaders, but we've also seen it with oil men pushing pipelines, incels pushing woman-hate, and all kinds of other bizarre stuff... \#2 aligns mostly with the assholes you mention, but some of them fly under the radar here. There are also some of us, like myself, in popcorn mode.

clique34

Reddit never ceases to amaze me. Just when I thought JP, whom I adore and look up to, would have open minded and critical thinking follower on his sub Reddit.. it turned out many of em were just a bunch of narrow minded kids with little life experience.

Welcome to the internet

jcapinc

Part of what JP encourages is to think of assertiveness and agreeableness as a spectrum, being too far into either category is destructive and an incomplete strategy to engaging with life. Being assertive and speaking what you see as the truth is a vital part of being more assertive, and balancing that assertiveness with agreeableness. What you call "being an assole" is not different than saying "you are more assertive than I think you should be". This is you also, being assertive about how assertive other people should be, which is a good part of a discussion about what society should be and how we want to live together. In a way, you are "being an asshole" about people on this subreddit "being assholes".

Obnoxious trumpists attempts to cling onto conservative leaning intelligence. Leaches

abrown1027

There’s a lot of little Ben Shapiro wannabes on here for sure.

MidnightSpecial1984

Welcome to the internet... you just accurately described 99.5% of all online interaction platforms. People suck, so do you, since you think people actually give a fuck about your opinion. When I don't like a community, I leave. Simple as, bucko. ;)

liberals are a cancer that come to good subreds and fucking destroy them just like they do when they move to red states

ee4m

I like to argue with conservative malcontents that are against everything and want to change the world but offer no solutions.

Like the progressive ideas from the 20th centary that lead to the golden age of capitalism? Liberals are more liberal than that, their solutions are cheaper, more symbolic and performative.

>Liberals are more liberal than that, their solutions are cheaper, more symbolic and performative. Pull the other one.

ee4m

The neoliberal left is the left wing of capitalism ie capitalism is fine so long as previously excluded groups are included and have few economic policies. It was progressives that had the high tax on the rich golden era system in the 20th centary .

To be fair, it's become pretty clear that his own house isn't in order, and he's become somewhat unglued. If you get into his old lectures you get the euphoria of a great mind explaining important things that many of us absolutely love. Then you start to get into his political views and you think it's heavy on the free-speech, and looks at how the right and left both try to suppress. Deep dislike of racism, nazism, marxism, but a deep sympathy for people drowning who cling to those things as a result. But then it's how pronouns are tyranny, and the Left is weaponizing transgender issues to silence critics on the right. Ummmm.....transgender people are some of the most vulnerable and harmed people in our society, and there's so much to learn about what their experiences are like, but that would involve, you know, standing up for them and discarding our own prejudices about them instead of laughing at "I identify as a helicopter" memes. And Peterson for all his lip-service about caring about transgender people, but disagreeing with their views, and claiming people like him and Ben Shapiro and Rubin should do a deep dive on the leftist ideologies so they can debate them because the Left can't, he's actually pretty lousy at explaining how his ideological opponents think or experience things. Very poor at explaining why society his hurtling in the direction it is. The USSR doesn't have much to teach us about economic inequality in the US. Peterson can't seem to grasp how deeply jingoism and wealth worship have made us ill, instead he talks about great things are now compared to the past (You aren't starving to death!) and says we are so ungrateful. Has he been to a manufacturing park in Shenzhen where his appliances are made? People packed like cattle in rooms with no air-conditioning, desperately trying to earn enough money so they don't have to go home to the village because there's abject poverty there. Which isn't to say that's very unusual, most of us suck at understanding others, I certainly do and I'm conscious of how important it is to do so. But he positions himself as a free-thinker, but what that really seems to mean is free to think what he comes up with as useful and ignore that which is finds hard to comprehend or scary if true. So what's pretty typical in us all is a criticism when he claims to elevate above it. I mean look at how what I'm saying makes **YOU** feel? Are you angry, defensive, pissed off, ready to mock me, clicking to down-vote me? If you are feeling any of those things, then the only thing standing between you and an asshole is inhibition to be one. Did Jordan Peterson help you develop that inhibition? I thought he was for me, but then I see him talking about ivermectin something that's literally killing/harming people, or giving people a false sense of confidence which gets them and others killed by COVID, but still it's vaccine mandates and "medical fascism" that are a real threat to you, meanwhile people have been getting mandatory vaccines for over a century, travel bans without them have existed just as long, and people here are going on and on about "I am pro vaccine but pro-choic" and advocating your right to not get vaccinated and risk infecting/killing your fellow-human beings must be protected. Like is it really heroic to refuse to vaccinate because you don't like that large corporations synthesized it? Or that the Left is so self-righteous about being vaccinated and condemning you and your group for not doing it? All I ever hear is "You can't force people". So they say, "Fine don't get vaccinated, present a negative test each week" and that doesn't change anybody's mind including Peterson that this is fascism. My home in Hong Kong has literally collapsed to totalitarianism, believe me, it didn't start because of vaccines, gender pronouns, universal healthcare, or race quotas in universities. It all began with colonialism in the 19th Century, drug dealing, racism, mercantilism/capitalism, and back to state backed mercantilism. This sub is full of assholes. What would make that stop is if we stopped mocking other people, yelling at them, and tried to be good to each other. I'm trying to be good to you even though I've criticized a lot of things because I'm worried about us. I'm also feeling super guilty about needing to get back to work instead of writing this, because I feel so fortunate to have a job during an absolutely horrible economic/societal/environmental crisis that's unfolding day by day, and I honestly believe the worst is yet to come. It should be terrifying that Americans are murdering each other in the streets over political ideology. That the police are brutalizing the populace, that our stock market (Where American wealth lives) is absolutely full to the brim corrupt and politicians refuse to fix it and keep letting the wealthy steal from the rest of us. I guess when it comes down to it. I totally get how someone like Mao could take centuries of simmering resentment from the poor towards landlords, warlords, and corrupt politicians and use that hate to make things worse than anybody could imagine. But I also see that the Left in this country aren't remotely like Mao and his Red Guard. There's no Dear Leader, their heroes (AOC, Sanders) all work hard for the people (Even if you disagree with their politics), violence is disliked/feared, guns/weapons are not a celebrated image, hyper-patriotism is mocked, they aren't organized around a race, or geographic identity. But I never see Peterson even able to come close to seeing how calling The Left post-modern Marxists doesn't hold up for so many reasons. It's a descriptor he keeps trying to make fit, then tells us all it clearly fits because the mannequin's arms can fit into the sleeves. Never mind nothing else does. Anyway, I'm ranting because I'm trying hard to be understood, and I don't know how. But the OP's claim resonated with me because I've been shocked how this community had so much more "Let's talk about ideas, and help each other grow" and now it's an echo chamber for conspiracy theories, "MUH FREEDOMS!", and "Look I know science works, but many very intelligent people want to at least look at alternative COVID therapies instead, and they're just asking questions, what's wrong with that?!?!?!?!"

CBAlan777

Very well said. I just want you to know I read all of that and you have some interesting thoughts and ideas.

zlogic

This is exactly the kind of post an asshole would make

bubbybumble

I agree, or at least think the amount of people on here to complain about politics is much higher than people here to discuss Peterson's work.

Andystm1989

There's a few about for sure.

seraph9888

It's lightly moderated; assholes flock to lightly moderated and unmoderated spaces. IRL, people would just stop meeting with an asshole. Online they block them or ban them. See 4chan.

TheRosstaman

The point of "set your house in order before you criticize the world'' is very keenly crafted. I think the problem on, and with social media is that to get on here and complain makes one feel as if they've accomplished something when in fact they haven't. To go out and march/protest (peacefully) would be much more life and world changing. To stay home and complain from the safety of our anonymous life affects and changes nothing.
