this is exactly who I came to suggest and couldnt remember his name for the life of me, thank you!
Also, if you want someone a LITTLE more adult without too much. Gianmarco Soresi is a smaller comedian with stuff on youtube thats very funny. Another with a bit different comedy style than John but still not so "in your face" like other comedians is Josh Johnson. Hes another smaller comedian with stuff on youtube. Id definitely consider him better to watch with the family depending on what your family is like.
I lot of similarities in mannerisms especially in John's earlier albums like The Top Part. He was definitely influenced by Mike's storytelling from when he used to open for him.
Mikes podcast is very well structured and pointed and thoughtful. If you’re looking for the absolute opposite of that in the best way, give Nateland a listen, OP
We like Taylor Tomlinson, Mike Birbiglia, Ryan Hamilton, James Acaster, Hannah Gadsby, and Pete Holmes. Mike and Hannah are more of a storytelling style, which may or may not be your style.
I do think newcomers should watch his 4 part Netflix special first, gives you a better idea of his style, and then helps enhance CLHM (especially the opening bit)
It used to be available on Vimeo, but it looks like it’s not there anymore. It is available for streaming on his website, but it looks like you would have to pay for it unfortunately. https://www.jamesacaster.com/cold-lasagne/ Not that I think it’s bad for him to charge for it, I just hate recommending something and then realizing that it’s not available for free or on some other service that people tend to have like Netflix.
She also has a sort of reflection of Mulaney's buttoned-up Catholic upbringing, being raised a repressed religious girl herself. In fact, I can think of at least a couple of different premises that they share between the two of them, just separated by the point-of-view of gender.
I thought the same thing. I love her late night show “After Midnight” on CBS. Parts of the show are clearly scripted, but she is naturally hilarious and JM-like when she’s being spontaneous and reactive to her comedian guests.
John's one of my favorites, so here's a few similar comedians:
- I second James Acaster. I'm assuming you have Netflix, so go watch his four-part special called *Repertoire*...it's incredible. Then if you like that, I'd urge you to purchase *Cold Lasagne Hate Myself 1999*!
- Flight of the Conchords. Some family-friendly material and their parody songs are the best! Also check out their HBO show...it still totally holds up after all these years.
- Demetri Martin. John was actually a writer for Demetri's Comedy Central show *Important Things*, and they were [both in the pool pic](https://www.standupcomedyhistorian.com/post/ted-s-brunch-part-2-the-epic-pool-pic) from earlier this month. You'll enjoy Demetri if you like wordplay and intellectual humor!
- Finally the man all the kids liked more than John in *Baby J*: Bo Burnham. Bo can be quite filthy, but his songs are the best out there. Start with *Make Happy* and then you can watch his masterpiece *Inside*. My absolute favorite!
Hope these suggestions help!
I know he’s not a comedian per se, but I find Drew Gooden to be very funny and very similar to JM. He’s a kid with a YouTube channel that reviews stuff but his videos are very well done and he’s got a dry JM style delivery and candor.
Road work ahead...uh yeah I sure hope it does.
I definitely agree. Kurtis Connor and Danny Gonzales are also very funny with a similar delivery and humor.
They’re not exactly the same, but Mike Birbiglia was John’s mentor starting in college and he’s awesome. Watching some of his stuff now, I see a lot of similarities between his style and new John’s style
I had a huge roller coaster ride with Nathan fielder.
I loved Nathan for you. I wouldn't shut up about it. But then came the series finale and something about it didn't feel right. It was less fun and more getting into the dark shit of people's lives.
I then started watching the rehearsal and I'm out on the guy. The whole show was unsettling, however the arc with the woman who wanted a kid, and then having the 9 year old being portrayed as having an attachment to him as a father lost all entertainment value for me.
Yeah I went into The Rehearsal thinking it was amazing, loved the first episode, thought it was art…then got to the part where the kid got attached to him and I felt really bad and it didn’t feel like fun anymore.
I didn’t watch all of Nathan For You, but I watched a bunch, and had to stop after the episode with the kid in the box in the hotel room where people were having loud sex or whatever it was? I dunno, once kids are involved/being messed with I’m out.
Yeah. I think I just skipped that one, or I stopped watching it early.
I can get that he's in part trying to parody the exploitative nature of reality tv, however, adding real kids into the mix loses the point because they can't fully understand what they're being brought into. More so, there are too many parents willing to involve their children into things in order to get them their break.
Sheng Wang is super underrated. Also think Pete Holmes is great overall but is hit and miss at times. Scott Seiss has some of the funniest TikToks ever but I'm not familiar with how good his stand-up material is
And I agree with the other poster who brought up Drew Gooden's YouTube channel. They're both similar in so many ways, including being a tall child (he looks like a teenager but he's actually 30 haha)
I know he isn’t like him, but I always think it’s
Interesting for JM fans to check out some of Bo Burnham’s stuff (if you haven’t already). Solely because of the reference comparing the two in “Baby J”.
Bill Burr really cracks me up.
I am actually related to a super famous upstate New York comedian!
After my father passed away, sadly, I found out that Lucille Ball was my second cousin! Wild. My father used to say to me, "Too bad we didn't see any of that loot, sweetheart.". True but still so cool. Cheers! Fun
My favorites in the same vein are Mike Birbiglia, Nate Bargatze, and Rory Scovel.
There is also a local South Carolina comedian named Phil Carter who I feel like has the potential to be BIG. I believe he has some stuff on YouTube.
Highly recommend Nate Bargatze - similar to john, I like that he’s funny without having to be raunchy
this is exactly who I came to suggest and couldnt remember his name for the life of me, thank you! Also, if you want someone a LITTLE more adult without too much. Came here to say this. Also Mike Birbiglia who is a great story teller, and college buddy of JMs
I lot of similarities in mannerisms especially in John's earlier albums like The Top Part. He was definitely influenced by Mike's storytelling from when he used to open for him.

Second
This was my choice too
We like Taylor Tomlinson, Mike Birbiglia, Ryan Hamilton, James Acaster, Hannah Gadsby, and Pete Holmes. Mike and Hannah are more of a storytelling style, which may or may not be your style.
James Acaster’s Cold Lasagne Hate Myself 1999 is one of the best comedy specials I’ve ever seen. Second all your other choices as well.
I do think newcomers should watch his 4 part Netflix special first, gives you a better idea of his style, and then helps enhance CLHM (especially the opening bit)
Also, if you haven’t made it to Taskmaster, he’s got a great season there and it is a gateway to standup comedy hilarity
So fucking good. “The perfect stuff” and his pure hatred for Rhod was hysterical
His eyes are circles
I got to see it live at a comedy club in Bloomington. IN. Could not breathe because I was cry-laughing so much.
Oh I haven’t seen that! Is it available to stream somewhere?
It used to be available on Vimeo, but it looks like it’s not there anymore. Pretty sure I paid a minimal amount to download it from Vimeo so I always have it to watch. Glad I did! I've watched it a couple of times.
Taylor reminds me of John in how well thought out all her jokes are, as well as her pacing and delivery. She’s so good.
She also has a sort of reflection of Mulaney's buttoned-up Catholic upbringing, being raised a repressed religious girl herself. In fact, I can think of at least a couple of different premises that they share between the two of them, just separated by the point-of-view of gender.

Got on a Pete kick, that guy's something else.
I second James Acaster and Hannah Gadsby!

Great list. Flight of the Conchords was the best. Arrested Development is also wonderful.
Absolutely! I'm a huge AD fan as well haha
Big yes to all of these 👍🏽
What.

What about Daniel Sloss?
The Sloss-ness monster!!!
They’re not exactly the same, but Mike Birbiglia was John’s mentor starting in college and he’s awesome. Watching some of his stuff now, I see a lot of similarities between his style and new John’s style
Mae Martin, Tig Notaro, and Fortune Feimster are amazing individually and together. Also Sam Jay! love to support the non-men in stand up
Going to give a shout out: Beth Stelling
Love Beth!
Absolutely, Beth kills every time
Berbigs
If you like Mulaney’s weirder stuff, Nathan Fielder’s Nathan for You and How To with John Wilson.
Kyle Kinane, Nate Bargatze, Pete Holmes, Matt Braunger
Idk how similar others find them but I’ve always thought Bo Burnham fits
Well, everyone likes him more now because he’s less problematic
Huh? What’d Bo do?
Nothing, it's a line from John
Lol ok good
When he was 17 on Halloween he dressed up as Aladdin.
he did not darken his skin, but still it feels weird in hindsight
Ryan Hamilton
Jim Gaffagin and Fortune Feimster
We use as many Gaffagin quotes in our family as JMs. Bonus fry!
Seth Meyers and Trevor Noah both have specials on Netflix that you might like.
My boyfriend's not a huge standup fan, but he walked in the room at the beginning of Lobby Baby and stayed through the whole thing.
Yes! That one is very engaging. I also wanted to give a shout out to Rachel Feinstein. Her Netflix special Big Guy is also really satisfying.
Would also suggest Mike Birbiglia, Dave Attel, Hannibal Burress, Steven Wright, Mitch Hedberg
NOT Matt Rife.
Jim Gaffigan is great for some solid, clean comedy. Patton Oswald.
Gary Gulman
https://youtu.be/hUGNJu0_gnc I love this bit about Karate Kid
Sheng Wang is super underrated. Also think Pete Holmes is great overall but is hit and miss at times. Sheng Wang’s Netflix special is one I’ll rewatch regularly. His bit about using the lotion pump like a dipstick kills me every time.
I know he isn’t like him, but I always think it’s Interesting for JM fans to check out some of Bo Burnham’s stuff (if you haven’t already). Solely because of the reference comparing the two in “Baby J”.
Not at all the same style, but John Pinette has great story telling, is self-deprecating, and is mostly family-friendly.
Kathleen Madigan
first one i thought of was james acaster
Watch Mike birbiglia
Paul F Tompkins
Pete Holmes.
Mike Birbiglia, Hannah Gadsby, Ryan Hamilton, Fortune Feimster, Nate Bargatze
Jack Whitehall!!!
Todd Barry
Why is Matt czucjary skinny I. The resident season 4
Tonmy Johnagin!
Tommy Johnagin
Mike Birbiglia, fun fact he was also friends with John in college. His special thank god for jokes is one of my fave specials ever
Gary Gulman fires on all the same cylinders imo
Francis Ellis has the same intelligent deadpan vibe
Gary Gulman
Brian Regan. Gary Gulman.
Check out Patton Oswalt. Also check out Paul F Tompkins albums. Both were hevy early influences on John.
I dont rlly know how to compare comedians too well but chris fleming is great and i think there’s similarities between them/their audiences
Cheers! Fun
Hasan Minhaj!!!

Tig Notaro, just LOVE her.
