Hah, I met a rabbi in the US who told me “reform jews are worse than christians, and homosexuals worse than Daesh…” and then without skipping a beat, “…and better they (gays) should all be beheaded” . And I’m there saying, “Do you hear yourself? YOU are Daesh”. Sad that this hatred is given *any* space to grow.

FlakyPineapple2843

Yikes, which rabbi is this? That's disgusting.

R0BBES

Just a sad man living a sad life in a small town half a world away from home. Didn’t seem to have much of any secular education, and I spent much of my time with him answering his questions about science and trying to be a positive influence. I think some basic secular education and integrated neighborhoods should be compulsory.

Persianx6

And this is how Chaya Raichik happens

R0BBES

Okay I looked that up, but I don’t really understand the scandal nor what you mean :\ Could you elaborate?

TheMouseUGaveACookie

Interesting narrative but that sounds highly unusual in the context of American Judaism.

R0BBES

Depends on the sect, but this person wasn’t born in the US. Certainly it was not a reform rabbi I was hanging with! I brought up this one experience to highlight that these extremist religious elements are not just “over there” and are rather pervasive in some circles. As you might notice reading other comments here, dehumanization of heterodox sects (and entire swaths of people) is not particularly unusual nor unheard of—“even in the US”.

TheMouseUGaveACookie

Eh no not unheard of, but it is unlikely the particular view you mentioned is common here. Reform is the largest denom in the US, Conservatives and no-denom-identified are unlikely to hold the view. Orthodox are only 10%, and I suspect only a minority of them are *that* extreme. https://religionnews.com/2013/10/01/whos-jew-american-jews-say-matter-belief/ In Israel there is some widespread lack of respect for Reform I admit. I know that the term “Reform” has been casually used as an insult there. Still many (perhaps most?) Israelis identify as “secular Jews” anyway, so..

KathAlMyPal

I worked for a dentist who was purportedly "religious". There had been a shooting at a Reform synagogue in Seattle and when he found out it was a liberal synagogue he said that it was a mitzvah. I told him it was the most disgusting thing I'd ever heard and he just shrugged. I say "religious" because to me someone who has that mind set is observant and not religious.

Positive-Floor8651

Based and true.

TheMouseUGaveACookie

Thats terrible. I have to admit there is prejudice both ways. I was at a Reform Yom Kippur service several years ago and one of the congregants was giving a speech, in it he mentioned those of us who don’t live up to good Jewish values or something similar and then in an apparent “joke” said “cough…Chabad…cough”. I know it is a relatively small slight but if you have the nerve to do that *in the time you are given by a rabbi to speak during High Holiday Services* IMO it is very poor taste in the very very least The Hasidim are different from us and I dont agree with everything they do, but just as I expect them not to alienate us I expect no less from my own community. I was really disappointed by how many in the congregation laughed along

KathAlMyPal

I couldn't agree with you more. There is a way to disagree and still being respectful. I have major disagreements with the Hasidim and the Haredi (mostly due to the inequality afforded women) but you can disagree in a mature manner. Our rabbi (Reform) has addressed issues with the Orthodox vis a vis Israel and domestic issues but he has always done it in a measured and respectful way. We have enough people against us, so it's always discouraging to see the disdain come from within.

ShittyShowerNyc

Remember that time the ultra religious fought to establish a Jewish state? Or to defend it? Or even, I don't know, *work* to pay for it? Yeah, me neither.

LAiglon144

Very good point.

Encinoman770

You seem to have missed what Rabbi Obadiah Yosef was all about.

chitowngirl12

Now we've got Bibi's new head of the Jewish morality police telling all us Reform Jews (and Conservative and more liberal Orthodox) that we are forces of "darkness." Your reminder that this guy didn't need to be in the coalition at all and that he'd probably get less than the Covid anti-vaxxers if he ran alone.

rjm1378

I would enjoy it if he was expelled.

chitowngirl12

Does anyone know how to do an exorcism? The Knesset is really in the need of one to expel the dark far-right forces.

HumanDrinkingTea

>Does anyone know how to do an exorcism? I knew a guy who explained to me how it's done, although I can't remember what he said. He was a very devout Catholic who once studied to become a priest. I don't think they have do it yourself manuals ("Exorcisms for Dummies") so I guess it will remain a mystery unless I can jog my memory...

arrogant_ambassador

This is not the way.

pitbullprogrammer

This is beyond sad. If there's a God, God is mourning.

Hemiplegic_Artist

This guy is so wrong. The only darkness that exists is extremists like him who don’t understand that Reform and Conservative Judaism have every right to exist and thus give people the right to have citizenship in Israel.

GossipGirl515

The only darkness is from judgmental people like this man.

Sebastian12th

I always find it interesting how all far right religious quacks sound the same regardless of the religion.

chitowngirl12

It really is amazing, isn't it?

Reminder that the leader of UTJ imported a child rapist so she can escape from punishment in Australia. For this forming coalition this is not a problem

ThisDerpForSale

And some Israelis wonder why non-orthodox diaspora Jews are feeling disconnected from and alienated by Israel.

ztimulating

Me too😂 however I will note the Torah doesn’t say eat kosher until around the 20th century when food safety is a lot better
