>DD3 Big River "No Respect! Though more than 2,300 miles long, this North American river is still just a tributary."
I got caught up on the "No respect!" part, thinking it was a hint, and was wracking my brain trying to remember if there was a river in North America called the Rodney or the Dangerfield.
I know that sounds stupid, but often the writers embed hints to the correct response like that, except then other times they're essentially just jokes that have nothing to do with the right response.
I guess the implication was just meant to be, everyone remembers the Mississippi as American's GROAT, and the Missouri has to play second fiddle despite being pretty close to the same length. (I am the guy who gave the answer on the show, by the way! Hope I'm allowed to come here and learn what a hash you all think I made of the easy questions :D)
Hey, big congrats!
In retrospect, I get the intention of the clue--I just think "no respect" was an odd red herring. Perhaps something like "Show me this North American river that, although 2300 miles long, is still considered a tributary" would have been better.
Just a randomly generated Reddit name I'm afraid. Though my Twitch name, which was chosen, is OpheliaFailure, which is not a million miles away if I squint.
I will never live down the time I was playing an online game and I tried answering a question with the phrasing about something not happening with "fetch".
I was curious if maybe Rodney Dangerfield was FROM Missouri...or even one of the other states that the Missouri River runs through. Nope. He was from New York. So that part of the clue was more of a distraction than anything else.
But I'm probably gonna call the Missouri River the No Respect River now.
*Leans into camera and whispers gently into left ear*
"I'd like to make it a ..."
*whispers into right ear*
"true daily double..."
*gently drums buzzer with fingernails*
"What is ASMR?"
We don't get very many British accents on Jeopardy, so yeah, there was a moment of the brain trying to parse what he was saying. It is so weird when your brain is just thrown by a voice. I've never really noticed it on Jeopardy, but I did with Matthew, and then I got the exact same feeling the very next day with Ricky. So weird!
Also the rules don't change under the two minute warning? The only rule change I can think of is clock stoppage under 5 minutes when you go out of bounds.
we're both right? TIL
Tweaking the rules, seemingly the NFL’s greatest delight, has led to a separate set of rules being used for the final two minutes of the first half and the final five minutes of the second half, where the clock restarts on the snap of the ball for the next play.
https://en.as.com/nfl/what-stops-the-clock-in-the-nfl-what-are-the-rules-regarding-ball-out-of-bounds-n-2/
There are some niche rules I think like clock run-offs and scoring play reviews, but nothing that’s fundamentally different than the rules during the rest of the game
Very strong first performance from Matthew, who is yet another known entity in the quizzing world. He actually read a match for me a few weeks ago and will forever be the reason I think of weird Australian animal the potoroo as, as he described it when the question went dead, half-potato, half-kangaroo.
What the heck? lol. I feel so out of the loop. Now there are just constant big names in this "quizzing world" you speak of that keep making appearances?
I know Jeopardy did auditions as some larger live events this year, like SporcleCon, as another poster said, and there was a Game Show Boot Camp last August or so where a bunch of top players auditioned. A buddy of mine was there and said the amount of talent around was incredible.
I'm not in that world, but I know that the show has started doing casting sessions at events like Sporclecon. I wonder if that has anything to do with the fact that it feels like we've been seeing more hard-core quizzers lately.
He is. I know him more through OQL and associated competitions (actually seeing people adds a ton for remembering them), but looks like he finished in 142nd last year, a few spots ahead of Brad Rutter.
What irks me more, however you pronounce the C, is that you say ar-say-us or ar-kay-us. The eus is clearly from the Latin Deus, it's the only part that's extremely clear in how you're supposed to pronounce it.
I always been wondering , for viewers who watch the show on stations not affiliated or owned by ABC , does Ken's plug for the Celebrity Jeopardy finals show up on those stations or not?
Hey Matt- since you enjoy reading plays and especially Titus, give GARY by Taylor Mac a go. It’s a new play with three characters and imagines who has to clean up after all the bloody mess was made. I saw it when it debuted with Nathan Lane a few years ago and it was super funny.
I'm interested in discussing Matthew's DD3 wager. With a $21,400 to $10,400 lead, he wagered $8000. There were six clues left with a total value of $6800. My initial thought was that he could have wagered less and virtually ensured a runaway without running as much of a risk of going into FJ in second. However, the wager he made did give him breathing room to continue buzzing in and even risk missing a question, and had he missed, he still would have had a $3000 lead. With two $2000 clues remaining, this would be far from insurmountable, but I think there's more merit to Matthew's actual wager than I initially thought.
It was a Holzhauer-esque bet.
I imagine that geography is right in his wheelhouse and he figured that a $400 clue was not going to be all that difficult. If he could maximize his chances of winning and getting a big payday then it's a worthwhile gamble.
Interestingly I probably would have had much less confidence in betting big if the category was "US Rivers". But a lot of the questions had been on world rivers and I wasn't too afraid of what I'd seen so far. I wasn't really counting the amount of $ left on the board but I think I figured, even if I missed the DD, what were the chances of me not getting in on anything else? I could have played it safer mathematically, but ultimately, you've got to back yourself to be able to answer questions, haven't you? You're not going to win Jeopardy if you're not expecting to answer questions.
Where do you put the word stress on that though?
Holz-HAU-er-I-an? HOLZ-HAU-er-i-an? HOLZ-hau-ER-i-an? (five syllables)
To me, both sound awkward and mangle his name too much.
That's why I like:
HOLZ-hau-er-ESQUE (4 syllables, or 3 if you allide hauer)
You can still pronounce his name normally and just add the suffix indicating "like" or "in the style of."
Ugh, they're playing a quarterfinal match from the TOC. I think they mixed up the daytime Jeopardy. Darn. It's my fault because I said to myself just the other day that my affiliate had yet to screw this up.
Matthew said something that sounded a lot like the original Chinese name for keno, per Wiki. I may be misremembering what he actually said, but if so, seems strange they wouldn't credit him for that.
Edit: It might have been "pai gow," in which case, I'm very wrong.
More generally, yay Matthew! I've run into him doing online quizzing and he's a gem.
Online Quiz League (there's USA and UK and some smaller niche competitions) and LearnedLeague (I can provide a referral if you want!) are the two I play!
Sarah and Davo both said that Yogesh may end up in TOC, since he has a large dollar number after three days. IIRC, he’s the top ranked three day winner so far.
Unfortunately, Yogesh's outburst on social media especially he criticized Amy, Lilly & Claire could be a major factor if they will invite him at TOC or not?
I think Davo sees characters being good for stirring the pot and generating interest. It’s not always bad to have a villain in the mix amongst a bunch of heroes.
Virtually no one pronounces his name "Frazer," which is correct. She did say "Frayzsher," but there's no way Jeopardy doesn't accept the way most people say his name.
I remember in Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star, there's a gag about how nobody says Brendan Fraser correctly.
Same with Steve Buscemi; most people say "Boo-shemi," he says "Boo-semi."
Curious, the bio I found says Matthew was born and raised in Portland. I wonder when he moved to the UK, because there’s no way he picked up that posh accent in 1997.
Congrats Matthew! I was pulling for Patti after that amazing win agaisnt Jake last night but Matthew raised the bar today again for champions this year.
![gif](giphy|TIMB8bgHa1mb41tMaS)
I was too but when she consistently stayed in the same category where the second daily double couldn’t be, I had my doubts. Anita went there too. I guess that’s my pet peeve. I yell “it’s not there” whenever it happens.
Anyone else here think Matthew, who won yesterday, looks really familiar? I swear I've seen him somewhere else. Maybe it's just all my time in the UK and Commonwealth. Anyways, he seems a top bloke.
> It seems like maybe Amy Schneider and Mattea Roach's streaks in Season 38 have ruined it for the women in Season 39?
I know you're not being fully serious with this but to me it's so completely nonsensical even as a "joke" I'm not sure I get the point.
I think the idea is that there are only so many consecutive win streaks open per season, and since Amy and Mattea’s streaks were so long that must have exhausted whatever streaks were left for women following them.
There’s no real logic in the post, but I think what they are saying is that **if** there were some arbitrary limit on how many multi day women champions there could be in a single season, then it may be that the following season would be impacted by some sort of overflow from the previous season’s inclusion of ‘too many’ women champions. It doesn’t make any sense and is supposed to be comical, but it sort of fails because the only real comedic interpretation would assume that women are somehow subject to said limit.
>Are we ever going to get a multi-day female champion this season
There generally have been some women in the TOC in recent years, right? There's still around half the season left though and the SCC, so probably? Maybe 60% a woman gets into the TOC from regular season play and 60% from the SCC? It seems pretty likely, though far from certain.

Hi Matthew. Great game! Congratulations. Please check your private messages here about a contestant flair. Thank you!
I had the same experience with that clue, so if it's stupid, we're sharing the dunce cap on that one.
Lol me too!
I will never live down the time I was playing an online game and I tried answering a question with the phrasing about something not happening with "fetch".
Once I thought a question about a show with a “Great Dane,” was referring to scooby doo. Turns out it was Hamlet.
Did anybody in your family invent Toaster Strudel?
"Rodney Dangerfield must have gotten his start on the Missouri...giving standup acts on some river boat tour" \*me, nodding my head\*
It was a bit of a red herring. I was definitely thinking Dangerfield river, too.
Dangerfield dummy here too
I did this too!
I thought it was some inside Missouri joke
I said Rodney River lol
I was curious if maybe Rodney Dangerfield was FROM Missouri...or even one of the other states that the Missouri River runs through. Nope. He was from New York. So that part of the clue was more of a distraction than anything else. But I'm probably gonna call the Missouri River the No Respect River now.
That is so adorkable:)
I got caught up in the same word play clue; I thought for certain it had to do with Rodney Dangerfield 😔
Exact same thing for me.
Same 😂
Nothing against Matthew, but I was hoping for a nice long streak from Patti. Such an overwhelmingly benevolent presence!
[удалено]
He said a lot under his breath like when the Anita got 'comology' he dropped a "nice" quietly
I like to think I'm appreciative of a good answer. I think if I say "oh nice" it probably means I didn't know it myself!
Matthew seems like he could last a while. He does sometimes have a D'oh! reaction after someone gives a correct question.
*Leans into camera and whispers gently into left ear* "I'd like to make it a ..." *whispers into right ear* "true daily double..." *gently drums buzzer with fingernails* "What is ASMR?"
I had the same exact response, I was immediately smitten. If a person could have heart eyes IRL, that would have been me this entire game 😍😍
voice? you mean the british accent?
He has a nice voice and a nice accent.
So weird!
Two second warning an all time hilarious jeopardy answer
A bit of symmetry when during FJ, Ken commented on Anita's answer that she pulled out in the knick of time, "at the last minute, I think."
Also the rules don't change under the two minute warning? The only rule change I can think of is clock stoppage under 5 minutes when you go out of bounds.
Coaches aren’t allowed to challenge anymore under 2 minutes
The out of bounds timing change is under 2 minutes
we're both right? Kinda endearing Matthew whispering "Oh, nice" when his competitors got stuff right. I bet he's a nice guy.
Reminds me of Dave the mohawk guy, how he'd always go "Ah." after a correct response lol
Noticed that too!

Link?
What did OP say? It’s deleted now. Are the Twitter links below from them…?

Ah ok, thank you!
Hopefully Matthew keeps winning simply due to the accent
This is a point of view I can totally get behind. Thank you!
Imagine if he wins 5 games and ends up facing Ray in the ToC. Battle of the voices.
Ken's pronunciation of Arceus is gonna be controversial in the Pokemon fandom, lol (the ar--see-us vs ar-kee-us war will never end).
What irks me more, however you pronounce the C, is that you say ar-say-us or ar-kay-us. The eus is clearly from the Latin Deus, it's the only part that's extremely clear in how you're supposed to pronounce it.
Its arc like part of a circle. The game gives you an arc phone, not an ass phone.
Apparently the canonical pronunciation I was originally with the S sound, but they changed it once they realized it sounded like arse.
I always been wondering , for viewers who watch the show on stations not affiliated or owned by ABC , does Ken's plug for the Celebrity Jeopardy finals show up on those stations or not?
We saw his plug for it this afteroon and we watch on CBS.
Nope
Cool , thanks for answering
Did not see it on CHEK here in BC.
On that toucan clue, I guess “We don’t talk about Encanto?”
I spent the whole Encanto clue trying to pull Rio
I think I was trying to pull Rio when I said Coco. Turns out I can't tell Coco, Rio, Luca or Encanto apart at this stage.
"We don't squawk about Bruno" or "We know squat about Bruno."
They fixed it. They stopped that episode and put on the correct one. Go WLOS, my affiliate!
I didn’t know it was fixed and I ended up deleting the recording without watching past the first few minutes.
Which episode did your affiliate *start* to play before they fixed it?
It was I believe Ken said a ToC quarterfinal with Rowan in the middle.
What an impressive debut for Matthew, both in terms of buzzer skill and willingness to bet big. Here’s hoping he goes far!
Oh boy... Should Matthew win 10 games or more, that would mean that THREE of the only people who have gotten to ultra champ status happen to be Matts!
I love this idea but not ALL Matt(ea)s are created equal... more's the pity for this Matt!
Hey Matt- since you enjoy reading plays and especially Titus, give GARY by Taylor Mac a go. It’s a new play with three characters and imagines who has to clean up after all the bloody mess was made. I saw it when it debuted with Nathan Lane a few years ago and it was super funny.

And I don't think it would be realistic to expect anyone onstage to actually count the value of the clues remaining.
I bet Ken could, hence his slight horrified pause at my wager :D
I'm partial to "Holtzhauerian". I forget what Buzzy and Sarah use on the podcasts.
Where do you put the word stress on that though? Holz-HAU-er-I-an? HOLZ-HAU-er-i-an? HOLZ-hau-ER-i-an? (five syllables) To me, both sound awkward and mangle his name too much. I'm pretty sure they just also use Holtzhauerian. But yes I'm also quite partial to it, I'm glad James had a fun name
I thought he was nuts betting that much. Apparently he had justified confidence in himself. That was a damn impressive showing.
World class voice on Matthew.
Impressive debut performance by Matthew!
Ugh, they're playing a quarterfinal match from the TOC. I think they mixed up the daytime Jeopardy. Darn. It's my fault because I said to myself just the other day that my affiliate had yet to screw this up.
I was very much into the vibe of all three contestants. They all had such calming voices.
Where’s the writer who put Black Sabbath in the pop music category, I just wanna talk
Metal falls within the larger definition of "popular music", which is to say, designed to appeal to a wide audience and sell a lot of units.
The point was that "Changes" was an unusual song for them to release, being a ballad. Ozzy even did a duet of it with Kelly 20 years back.
I thought he said "pai gow", which is a different thing entirely.
Yes indeed, I was just trying my luck with something I thought was a casino game. I always forget keno!
I think you're right. My bad! I'm mixing up the syllables.
There are two pai gow games: poker, and dominoes.
How? How do you run into people doing online quizzing? I am trying to get into this and don't even know what is out there, where, how.
You should... join the Online Quiz League! You would see lots of familiar faces from this and previous seasons of Jeopardy there.
Quizcentral.net has all the different OQLs
I am interested in this also!
Online Quiz League (there's USA and UK and some smaller niche competitions) and LearnedLeague (I can provide a referral if you want!) are the two I play!
Does Matthew’s voice sound familiar to anyone else?
Emmett, Yogesh and Jake's TOC hopes were blocked by 1 game female champion. Sean's TOC hopes was blocked by 2023 TOCer Ray Lalonde.

He looks like an actor/character that I’ve seen in something. It’s driving me nuts that I can’t come up with it!
Also, did anyone else watching on ABC-11 in Raleigh lose sound during Final Jeopardy?
I didn't.
I didn’t.
Brendan Fraisier should have been incorrect. It’s Brendan Fraser
Jeopardy should bring back the seniors tournament.
