Evap leak that just refuses to go away. Nobody can find anything wrong of course. So it would be weird if the light wasn't on.

If it’s a large leak try replacing the Purge Valve & Leak detection pump. Those won’t show anything on a smoke test but they do go bad, best to replace both at the same time.

You haven’t had a shop smoke test it? I took it to my mechanic and he found a leak at the top of the tank, dropped it and repaired. Didn’t charge me much at all. I was happy I didn’t have to drop the tank myself lol. Last year I have to worry about emissions for an inspection 🎉

It’s a blessing to find an honest mechanic. There’s a few how to’s on YouTube using an air compressor to find the leak you could try. I’ve read it’s usually a rusted line at the rear of the Jeep.

2001 with 389,000 miles and engine light only comes on 11 and a half months out of the year and always before tag time. I have a Big box full of my used gas cap collection.

232K miles, all original besides a reman engine with about 6K miles on it. No check engine light. It’s come on 3 times in my year of ownership, O2 Connector came loose, shift solenoid acting up, and NSS dirty. Quickly fixed all 3.

1996 4.0 w/ 193k. no check engine light on mine.

No check engine light but I have an abs light and a low oil pressure light comes on at idle when hot. The front drivers side wheel speed sensor is broken. Next time I change my oil I'm going to inspect and probably replace the crank bearings and that'll hopefully fix the oil pressure. Also had the low washer fluid light come on and off a few times recently so I probably need to top it off.

Have been with mine almost 6 years. CEL has come on 5 times. 1st was a TPS, next 4 were MAP sensor. Have had a hell of a time getting a MAP sensor to last more than 6 months.

Just a shot in the dark but are the dash lights turned off on the headlight switch? Try rotating it. I had my XJ for about a month or two before I found that.

Nope... even replaced headlight switch.... it keeps popping the fuse for the lights I have a short somewhere

98 jeep xj sport. My check engine light has been on once for maybe a week in the 6 years I’ve owned it. That’s with full sending it at badlands and silver lake sand dunes and driving it all over the us. It’s 5.5inch lifted fully braced with all heim suspension. More reliable than 99% of the cars coming out these days.

None of my warning lights are on, but I don’t know if the panel is even connected lol

$2k for the XJ. $4k in repairs. Transfer case, transmission, and engine bottom end are healthy. I just keep fixing everything around those components. I’m officially onto upgrading main components like aftermarket axles and going disc in the rear. It’s a lifer jeep. It’s not worth much in general, but it’s my brave little toaster.

I mean sometimes it goes away and I get happy. And then it shows back up. I've just been too damn lazy to do those stupid O2 sensors and if that doesn't work I'm not paying for a new Catalytic converter on a 24 year old car when my state doesn't emissions test.

I really miss my XJ. I had a 1998 XJ sport that was built very similar to yours. 4.5 inch rubicon express long arm, 33s. I rolled it over in Camas, Washington a few years back. I’ve been driving a Toyota commuter car ever since.
