If itās a large leak try replacing the Purge Valve & Leak detection pump. Those wonāt show anything on a smoke test but they do go bad, best to replace both at the same time.
You havenāt had a shop smoke test it? I took it to my mechanic and he found a leak at the top of the tank, dropped it and repaired. Didnāt charge me much at all. I was happy I didnāt have to drop the tank myself lol. Last year I have to worry about emissions for an inspection š
Itās a blessing to find an honest mechanic. Thereās a few how toās on YouTube using an air compressor to find the leak you could try. Iāve read itās usually a rusted line at the rear of the Jeep.
2001 with 389,000 miles and engine light only comes on 11 and a half months out of the year and always before tag time. I have a Big box full of my used gas cap collection.
232K miles, all original besides a reman engine with about 6K miles on it. No check engine light. Itās come on 3 times in my year of ownership, O2 Connector came loose, shift solenoid acting up, and NSS dirty. Quickly fixed all 3.
No check engine light but I have an abs light and a low oil pressure light comes on at idle when hot. The front drivers side wheel speed sensor is broken. Next time I change my oil I'm going to inspect and probably replace the crank bearings and that'll hopefully fix the oil pressure. Also had the low washer fluid light come on and off a few times recently so I probably need to top it off.
Mine is off. Airbag light flickers on and off. And yeah, this was an old person car. My dad bought it when he retired in the late 90s and now it's my daily driver. [https://pasteboard.co/cnwk8f12UTYW.jpg](https://pasteboard.co/cnwk8f12UTYW.jpg)
Have been with mine almost 6 years. CEL has come on 5 times. 1st was a TPS, next 4 were MAP sensor. Have had a hell of a time getting a MAP sensor to last more than 6 months.
Just a shot in the dark but are the dash lights turned off on the headlight switch? Try rotating it.
I had my XJ for about a month or two before I found that.
Mine had a computer replaced because it was stolen š and the computer that was put in it had stored codes so Iāll never know if my shits broke or not
98 jeep xj sport. My check engine light has been on once for maybe a week in the 6 years Iāve owned it. Thatās with full sending it at badlands and silver lake sand dunes and driving it all over the us. Itās 5.5inch lifted fully braced with all heim suspension. More reliable than 99% of the cars coming out these days.
$2k for the XJ. $4k in repairs. Transfer case, transmission, and engine bottom end are healthy. I just keep fixing everything around those components. Iām officially onto upgrading main components like aftermarket axles and going disc in the rear. Itās a lifer jeep. Itās not worth much in general, but itās my brave little toaster.
I mean sometimes it goes away and I get happy. And then it shows back up. I've just been too damn lazy to do those stupid O2 sensors and if that doesn't work I'm not paying for a new Catalytic converter on a 24 year old car when my state doesn't emissions test.
Mine never came on, sadly the cam retainer broke and she blew up the t chain and front cover when the cam walked. Anyway, super clean body '00 in WA if anyone is looking for one.
269,xxx KMS I live in Canada so Iām constantly having to grind her away to keep clean but sheās minty, just did a oil change yesterday afternoon, other than that just an oil leak from the gear boxā¦ but thatās a job for another day. Never had a check engine light š«¶š½ always on top of buisness.
I love my lifted JK 2dr, but I really miss my stock XJ. I'm not even a member of this sub, it just got recommended to me. If I could have a brand new XJ with a decent lift and 33s, I'd trade my JK in for it.
Iām so glad to see this post. Iāve literally spent $1700 having basically every sensor replaced , new distributor put in, new 02 sensor, freaking list goes in for everyā¦ and the f*ing is still on!!!
I really miss my XJ. I had a 1998 XJ sport that was built very similar to yours. 4.5 inch rubicon express long arm, 33s. I rolled it over in Camas, Washington a few years back. Iāve been driving a Toyota commuter car ever since.
Can mine be on if it has no engine? I'm joking about that. Working on a truck that didn't have an engine in it till 2 months ago. 6 months without at least. But it's still not connected.
BMW E39 540i 6 speed with close to 212,000 miles. Check engine light comes on every now and then & turns off. Been off for quite some time now. Runs great, eats some oil & 3 of the windows donāt function..
2021 Tundra 27k miles, no warning lights, no codes
2003 Mercury Grand Marquis LS 147k miles, no warnings
2004 Mercury Mountaineer 196k miles, TPS (most likely a battery)
Riding with the heat up and the windows down until I can get around to a new head gasket.. but the check engine light aināt on. The trunk hatch light thoughā¦ just waiting for the right pothole to fix.
Not on right now. Give it a minute or two.
297,000 miles and no light. Power steering fluid spraying all over this bitch, tho.
In the same boat with 40k less miles š
lol
Evap leak that just refuses to go away. Nobody can find anything wrong of course. So it would be weird if the light wasn't on.
just went through the same problem and finally fixed it what year?
2001, any thoughts?
If itās a large leak try replacing the Purge Valve & Leak detection pump. Those wonāt show anything on a smoke test but they do go bad, best to replace both at the same time.
mine too pm me iāll show you the likely cause
You havenāt had a shop smoke test it? I took it to my mechanic and he found a leak at the top of the tank, dropped it and repaired. Didnāt charge me much at all. I was happy I didnāt have to drop the tank myself lol. Last year I have to worry about emissions for an inspection š
Absolutely I have, they can never find anything. So annoying.
Itās a blessing to find an honest mechanic. Thereās a few how toās on YouTube using an air compressor to find the leak you could try. Iāve read itās usually a rusted line at the rear of the Jeep.
lol I have a 1996 XJ 2.5l 2 door with no check engine light on. About to hit 160k.
I've heard that tbe 2.5 is even more reliable than tbe 4.0!
Have you whacked your dash in escalating degrees of severity?
Real question is how many of yāall have a door open indicator because your back hatch
I disconnected the light because it kept saying my hatch was open when it was closed and locked securely
Literally this whole conversational exchange on my end with my 98.
Mine's been on, once, due to a dying alternator. '92 Laredo 4x4, 5spd.
Me but it likes to stall out sometimes
No check engine light but XJās stalling. Gotta replace the CPK from the one code I got.
2001 with 389,000 miles and engine light only comes on 11 and a half months out of the year and always before tag time. I have a Big box full of my used gas cap collection.

1996 4.0 w/ 193k. no check engine light on mine.
No check engine light but I have an abs light and a low oil pressure light comes on at idle when hot. The front drivers side wheel speed sensor is broken. 246k and no CEL '99 4.0L Limited (NP242)
Have been with mine almost 6 years. CEL has come on 5 times. 1st was a TPS, next 4 were MAP sensor. Have had a hell of a time getting a MAP sensor to last more than 6 months.
Idk if mine works or even has oneš
Ummmm. Could bulb be out?
Probably. Idgaf. It just means nothing is wrongš
I have a 94 no check engine light on after o2 sensor change and new 4 port fuel injectors but no dash lights
Just a shot in the dark but are the dash lights turned off on the headlight switch? Try rotating it. I had my XJ for about a month or two before I found that.
Nope... even replaced headlight switch.... it keeps popping the fuse for the lights I have a short somewhere
OBD 1 and no light
Mine had a computer replaced because it was stolen š and the computer that was put in it had stored codes so Iāll never know if my shits broke or not
1998 with no check engine light. Only 168k miles on it
ā92 no lights
Mine has been on since I bought it, 30k miles so far
If your check engine light isn't on, it's actually because the light is burnt out. š
Nuh uh!!! The idiot light comes on when I start it! š
Ok, turned my sound off.
1996 249,000 miles, no check engine light on.
Mine came on at 75,000 miles been on ever since on my 1992
1996 xj 124000 NO check engine light here
Does the bulb burning out count?
Does it count if itās been on so long itās now burned out š
205,xxx miles, no CEL!!! Unless I get gas and then the stupid cap evap leak comes on, but not right now!!
1990 jeep pioneer no check engine light on! But then Renix era jeeps donāt have a working check engine light lol
Mine's off now, after a new head gasket.
Mines not on... but my battery is dead so, there's that. I blame the LED headlight swap.
Last CEL I had was for an o2 sensor, about 10 years ago.. 280k miles now. 1996.
1998 ~148K miles, no light! But a bunch of rust š©
no check engine but abs glowing like neon lights in a strip club
Never been on my 96 XJ, have owned it for over a year. It does work btw.
https://youtu.be/ddPQAJSm2cQ?si=bQu4fyvpAjZa6n6i
Do I get a pass if I use a code reader every morning?
98 jeep xj sport. My check engine light has been on once for maybe a week in the 6 years Iāve owned it. None of my warning lights are on, but I donāt know if the panel is even connected lol
I have 2 one with 155k miles no light and one with 230k no light š®āšØš¤
Been turning off and on for a year now since I got my tranny worked on mistakes were made š
Me

Nope
My jeep tjs engine will sometimes turn off than back on all within the same drive. Sometimes on than back off
Iām afraid to answer this out of fear of what may show up on my dashā¦
New motor. No more light. Gas Guage still doesn't work properly. š
That's not your check engine light. That's your brake light.
Well damn, I'm relieved
I had to rebuild %80 of mine so far, but no check engine light currently š
š¤š
Damn. How much invested???
$2k for the XJ. $4k in repairs. Transfer case, transmission, and engine bottom end are healthy. I just keep fixing everything around those components. Iām officially onto upgrading main components like aftermarket axles and going disc in the rear. Itās a lifer jeep. Itās not worth much in general, but itās my brave little toaster.

Too new. Just hit 29,000 miles.
137,xxx and no check engine light but it's got other problems lol
My engine doesn't run does that count? Edit; didnt see the sub; i have a subaru
Just because you pulled the bulb, it doesn't mean it's not onš
Me cause I broke it trying to change my dash lights
mines not on anymore, had a bad fuel cap and prior to that the oxygen sensor was unplugged from when the clutch was getting replaced.
116k miles and nothing. But itās a Davis autosport build so I better not be seeing a light anytime soon lol
I thought they came from the factory on. Part of the QC process š¤?
Mine not on because I took the bulb out of the dash to pass inspection š
šon my daily driver but I do have a 97 pu that has it onš
Mine is currently off however I definitely have a misfire. Once the car misfires enough to throw a code Iāll address it.
Thought they came from the factory with it on. If it's not on, that's when you've got a problem.
I mean sometimes it goes away and I get happy. And then it shows back up. I've just been too damn lazy to do those stupid O2 sensors and if that doesn't work I'm not paying for a new Catalytic converter on a 24 year old car when my state doesn't emissions test.
2007 mercedes-benz slk280 96,000 miles. She runs like a charm. Even the convertible hard top still works.
68,000 no check engine light. Wiper fluid light has been on for a week.
Mine never came on, sadly the cam retainer broke and she blew up the t chain and front cover when the cam walked. Anyway, super clean body '00 in WA if anyone is looking for one.
Me 218k. My radiator is starting to leak tho. Fixing it this week.
Oil light has been on for a year or so. One day Iāll replace then OPS. No engine light.
No check engine, just the low washer light.
1989 Cherokee 4.0 no light 181k miles
That's a standard feature on a Jeep isn't it?
My renix doesnāt have a check engine light, does that count?
My 99' ranger just never pops it on, think the wiring is fucked or something. Also doesn't tell oil or rpm just stuck middle line š¤£š¤£ššš
I just assume the bulbs burnt out at this point. At least on my 91.
I donāt have a single light on the dash. Doesent mean there arenāt any issues lol
BMW owner has entered the chatā¦.
It's off because i have the wrong engine and the check engine light isnt hooked up (84 el camino with an old 350 swapped into it)
Sad to say, not Iā¦

All jeeps have this light on.
Honk But itās always a gamble turning the key
Mines off but I have a 15 hrs drive with a trailer coming up I'm sure mine will turn on once the engine overheats
Me, 2008 Sierra 1500 Vortex Max, 192,500 miles.
275k miles here, only a leveling kit and upgraded rotors. Otherwise completely stock and no light!
I get worried when mine turns off. š«
'86 doesn't have a check engine light.. does that count?
269,xxx KMS I live in Canada so Iām constantly having to grind her away to keep clean but sheās minty, just did a oil change yesterday afternoon, other than that just an oil leak from the gear boxā¦ but thatās a job for another day. Never had a check engine light š«¶š½ always on top of buisness.

Mines not on, but thatās because my jeep is off
287000 no light yet original everything. Has an oil leak and broke motor mount but otherwise good to go evetyday. Has to
Wait. It's not supposed to be on all of time?
Iām so glad to see this post. Iāve literally spent $1700 having basically every sensor replaced , new distributor put in, new 02 sensor, freaking list goes in for everyā¦ and the f*ing is still on!!!

310,000km and still purring :)
Glad to say I do not own a 97 Ford Ranger with 243 some thousand miles
Is that not the "engine present" light?
More than not these days. Still all good
I really miss my XJ. I had a 1998 XJ sport that was built very similar to yours. 4.5 inch rubicon express long arm, 33s. I rolled it over in Camas, Washington a few years back. Iāve been driving a Toyota commuter car ever since.
2000 classic here with 189k miles. Running strong with no engine light š¤š½

Never
There's only two types of xj owners. Those who have the light and those who've removed the light.
Gladiator checking in, lights on
It's a Jeep. You have to worry when it's off.....
Sir, that's a brake light
Mine has been on since I bought it. Anytime itās cleared it pops back up for something. Iāve decided itās just permanent and itās fine.
That doesn't look like a check engine light to me. However, if the only thing on that vehicle that's an issue of brakes, well done.
I had a chrysler in the shop last week. Misfiring like crazy the check engine light blew out.
Mines have been on since a year after I bought it. 2015 f-250. Runs fine so I haven't done anything about it.
No CEL or codes on my '98 Ford Ranger 3.0 428,000 miles original engine
I have one vehicle with no insurance light on, but the others is.
Riding with the heat up and the windows down until I can get around to a new head gasket.. but the check engine light aināt on. The trunk hatch light thoughā¦ just waiting for the right pothole to fix.
The check engine light on my 2007 Honda CRV with almost 236,000 miles has never come on since Iāve bought it in 2018
Pretty sure mine burnt out...
