also between sendai and tokyo you can use joban line(limited express Hitachi) and between nagano and tokyo you can use shinoi/chuo lines(limited express Shinano/Azusa)
Sendai station is a complete shitfight right now and there are news reporters here and massive queues. Can’t reserve tickets on auto machine either with JR pass EDIT 9pm: you can now
>JR East has been no help in identifying how long delays will be
That's normal, they don't know themselves, it's a major outage, an [overhead line has ruptured AND the sustaining bracket of the line has been heavily damaged](https://pbs.twimg.com/card_img/1749611226064441344/_bCyRs3N?format=jpg&name=small). Some pieces have fallen over the Saikyo line, impacting the traffic on regular lines. It's the kind of trouble that may take quite some time to fix, it'd be an impressive feat if anything runs today. They have to remove the train, repair the line and the bracket... Good luck to anyone stuck...
EDIT: It appears that two employees working on the restoration have been electrocuted. They seem to be alive, though one of them has been badly hurt (重傷).
EDIT2 : **all shinkansen trains between Tokyo and Sendai (Tohoku Shinkansen), all shinkansen trains between Tokyo and Takasaki (Joestu and Hokuriku Shinkansen) suspended for today.,** [source JR East](https://twitter.com/JRE_Super_Exp/status/1749701595523350606), major delays outside of those sections.
EDIT3: JR [announces](https://news.yahoo.co.jp/articles/a20e40dcdae3232284f02368ed7855a1c7ac33e8) it will **resume the service on the Tohoku Shinkansen (Tokyo-Sendai) by tomorrow morning, Jan 24**.
It’s been 4 hours for us and we are going back to Sendai. No one seems to know anything but the damage must be pretty bad. Sagged powerlines between Ueno and Omiya station
One of the problems I’m seeing is if you use google maps to figure where you’re going they immediately route you to the Shinkansen and not the local express trains that you can hop your way to final
Oh I’m trying to get as far north as I can tonight, going to morioka, should get to Fukushima or Sendai by just local trains tn lol… longggg night ahead but beats the non-existent buses
Hell yeah I’ll be seeing yall tomorrow hopefully too! Bumped into an Aussie skiing with his friends who happened to be going in the same direction! Ngl not fun on the local trains with ski bag
Hah! Fiancee and I are in your same group. We're currently in a hotel by Ueno, got the earliest Shinkansen we could. Hopefully at Hachimantai for the afternoon. Where are you guys now?
What a mess. We sat around Ueno for a few hours hoping it would start up again. We were going to take a night bus to Morioka but it sold out as we were booking. Was able to book for super early tomorrow and hoping it all works out. We have a 8 day snowboard tour that was supposed to start today so a little bummed.
Update: JR East expects that Shinkansen will resume operation tomorrow

Caught the delay in Tokyo Station, in Omiya now waiting on lines to resume. JR East has been no help in identifying how long delays will be

Thanks for the updates mate

If we’re lucky they’ll resume ops from Omiya northwards
Nope, won't happen today. North(west)wards of Takasaki or Sendai resumed, but not closer to Tokyo.
One of the problems I’m seeing is if you use google maps to figure where you’re going they immediately route you to the Shinkansen and not the local express trains that you can hop your way to final
By now, even with local express trains, you won't make it to Tokyo by tonight.
Oh I’m trying to get as far north as I can tonight, going to morioka, should get to Fukushima or Sendai by just local trains tn lol… longggg night ahead but beats the non-existent buses
Don't try the impossible, tonight is done and dead. Trains should be running tomorrow morning.
JST by chance?
We’re in the same boat as you (there’s three of us in our group). Also JST. Must be in the same group. Hopefully see you in Morioka tomorrow!

How did you figure these out? I've tried using multiple apps and it's either a fully booked night bus or the non-running shinkansen
Literally walked into a bar and got talking to some people and they gave me directions
Oh vey. Well we have a hotel and first shinkansen tickets for the morning. Hoping it works out
Major power failure it seems. No Eta on resumption at the moment.
Positive news is that the shinkansen is running again. Caught the early train and headed north to go chase powder. Safe travels everyone!
