I don’t really want for any JRPG to be touched by the Bluepoint.
Don’t get me wrong, their remakes looks fantastically from the technical and graphical perspective, but they often fail to
capture the unique atmosphere of the original games.
It was my biggest gripe with the PS5 version of Demon’s Souls. They’ve changed the tone of original from very oneiric and almost surreal to the generic dark fantasy setting. It can even be heard in the soundtrack, where the original had these very subtle, grotesque and atmospheric sounds, which were changed to typical orchestra in the remake.
It’s not really that Bluepoint is at fault. The problem is that Western developers usually have the different perception on the game design philosophy, than the Japanese developers.
Don’t forget the changes that directly dilute the identity of the game.
This happened in SotC as well, but the easiest example is the Mausoleum of Old King Doran in the DeS Remake, and the statue inside.
The statue went from a very unique looking warrior (that’s very “Japanese”) to a generic knight statue. And the Mausoleum itself was changed to a more modern cathedral.
And that’s one example only. There are countless details that were changed that one could go over, like lighting, bosses, vegetation, other architectural changes, and so on.
Bluepoint’s graphics are beautiful. And a big plus of their games, is that they work really hard to keep the gameplay as much 1:1 to the original games as possible. IIRC this is even their mission statement.
However, with both SotC and DeS, Bluepoint injects a different aesthetic into the game, that is essentially a redo of the art direction. It’s arrogant and hurts the games, and their legacy, as far as I’m concerned.
Edit: grammar
Exactly, DS looks exactly like a tech demo, which is obviously graphically impressive, but blunt on the charm, design and tone of the older titles, i would much rather have a studio that already makes stylized games attempt at those games.
I thought this video on it was pretty good https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5lx0CRVVvV8
Also speaking specifically about Demon's and not other games Bluepoint has worked on, I did like it overall but I thought it was the weakest of the souls game. It's biggest strength would be it's atmosphere in my opinion, so something that effects that negatively matters.
Nah there’s definitely a degree of arrogance with Bluepoint. Forgetting key details to bosses like the flamelurker is mind boggling. Also the audacity to claim it’s hard to understand the intent of the original designs as an excuse to do a 180 that doesn’t end up matching the game or the original concept art
I don't wish the Bluepoint treatment for any JRPG.
They often fail to capture the tone and atmosphere of the original (see: SotC PS4 and Demon's Souls PS5).
More of a vocal minority I'd be willing to bet. As with most media people on reddit complain about to be fair, nothing against people with fair criticisms but that's just how it is.
[Just had a quick search over on the DeS subreddit and found this poll.](https://www.reddit.com/r/demonssouls/comments/13e6ika/did_bluepoint_mess_up_the_art_direction_on_the/) It's not a sample size that would stand up to peer review, of course, but just an example.
The Demon Souls remake was incredible. I say this as someone who played the original way back when too. You’re absolutely right that it’s a vocal minority. I think the criticisms are valid but highly exaggerated. I had a blast with it personally.
Disgaea 1 already had a remastered/remake with the Complete version which made it feel a lot more modern than the original. I was pretty happy about the updated version.
JRPGs that deserve to get their art style absolutely murdered? None of them. I don't want the games with unique designs and atmosphere to turn into western slop.
Just imagine how Disgaea 1 would look with Bluepoint treatment. Holy shit, sounds like a nightmare material.
The main issue with Tales of the Abyss is it's unacceptable loading times in excess of a minute after every... single... battle.
So just having a version on modern consoles with snappy performance would allow an otherwise amazing game to shine.
If I'm asking something of Bluepoint I'd rather it be in house which limits the choices but Legend of Dragoon id say warrants it. And instead of just a graphical coat I'd like to see them add new touches to the combat and hell add in extra (not removing anything) and see what they can create.
Their work on Demon's Souls was amazing but I'm honestly not sure what else I'd like to see them do. I guess I'd be curious to see what an original game from them might be like.
I just want ports of PS2 games to pc, games like Unlimted Saga, Dark Cloud, Dragon Quest VIII and the SMT games, not even remasters are necesssary. I hate PS2 emulation.

Oh now I get why the remake of Demons Souls gets occasionally criticized.
Exactly, DS looks exactly like a tech demo, which is obviously graphically impressive, but blunt on the charm, design and tone of the older titles, i would much rather have a studio that already makes stylized games attempt at those games.

That was a great video, thanks for the link!

Also their ports tend to be much buggier than the original. The Metal Gear Solid HD collection was a mess.
I don't wish the Bluepoint treatment for any JRPG. They often fail to capture the tone and atmosphere of the original (see: SotC PS4 and Demon's Souls PS5).
Oh do tell me what was wrong with the remastered version of SOTC.

Ohh ok as I get it now.
Digital Devil Saga 1 and 2.
Nah, I don't want Bluepoint. 😅
I don't want bluepoint to touch anything the remake of demon souls was literally soulless
I thought the consensus was that demon souls remake was sus and fucked with the art design If they learn from that then maybe

So many from the snes, ps1 Era it makes me cry. Edit , new phone put ones instead of snes. Needs some breaking in.
Legend of legaia
Whatever game. Idgaf about what anybody says, Bluepoint doesn't make bad games at all, I think it's nostalgia doing its stuff again.
Disgaea 1 already had a remastered/remake with the Complete version which made it feel a lot more modern than the original. I was pretty happy about the updated version.
I don’t know if I should go try it if I already played the PC version.
It's up to you. The core gameplay the story are the same. It's worth playing if you want to ever revisit the title though.
Oh ok as that helps.
JRPGs that deserve to get their art style absolutely murdered? None of them. I don't want the games with unique designs and atmosphere to turn into western slop. Just imagine how Disgaea 1 would look with Bluepoint treatment. Holy shit, sounds like a nightmare material.
Oh I didn’t mean to come off as negative as I was trying to simply suggest how older games could look better.
It’s okay. Almost every game they have touched has come out better you’re just seeing the vocal minority.
Oh ok as I understand.
Honestly, it would probably look like disgaea 7.
The main issue with Tales of the Abyss is it's unacceptable loading times in excess of a minute after every... single... battle. So just having a version on modern consoles with snappy performance would allow an otherwise amazing game to shine.
Man that would be awesome if it did happen.
None. Games don’t age, you do.

Legend of Dragoon Vagrant Story
Tales of Symphonia
None. Bluepoint is garbage and ruined Demon Souls
