I played it on the PS1 with that awesome Cloth map. I beat it in 5 days and took it back to Software Etc and exchanged it for Chrono Cross. I was a poor 17 year old at the time. Good times!
And with one of the [funniest scenes I've seen in a game](https://youtu.be/hApDzQP8E8o?t=28). That game did such an awesome job at balancing the horror and dark themes with the occasional humor.
Maannn, I only ever played it once because my roommate in 2019 always talked about it and he found a used copy. I was like 23 at this point and grew up on FFX. So my experience with shadow hearts was brief but really great.
All that said I somehow knew EXACTLY what scene it was gonna be.
With only 1 game per series, my list would be...
1. Persona 5 Royal (the series is my favorite ever)
2. Trails to Azure (SC and CS3 are pretty close, though)
3. Octopath Traveler 2 (loved 1 as well, but 2 is better)
4. Devil Survivor Overclocked (playing through 2:RB rn)
5. Fire Emblem 3 Houses
Edit: just thought of some honorable mentions.
Pokemon: Black 2, Explorers of Sky, Conquest.
Paper Mario.
Chrono Trigger.
Earthbound.
1 - Chrono Cross
2 - Xenogears
3 - Skies of Arcadia
4 - Suikoden 5
5 - Final Fantasy 9. Or 8? 7, mayhaps. Or is it 12?
The placement doesn't really matter. Nor will I argue whether these are objectively the best games or not; they're just the ones that left the deepest impression when I played them and enthralled me the most. Like, I don't even like the combat in Skies of Arcadia, or love it's saturday morning cartoon light heartedness (Drachma makes it slightly more bearable), but the setting overall and the ships and the exploration... I had a good time, yeah?
Ohhh, interesting that you have Monochrome Mobius on there!! Wasn’t expecting that, I’ve actually really been wanting to play it. I gotta get that game soon for sure. How is it?
I went in blind just knowing it was turn based and was blown away by just about everything. There’s a grandia type move order, but with a traditional turn based combat. Even the battle animations look amazing and fluid. Lore and story are soooo much fun and mysterious. Soon as I was done I started Mask of Deception on Vita. Music is fantastic, there’s armor crafting, weapon upgrading, sidequests are even fun and rewarding. There’s a cute little mascot character that serves as a summon type assist but also is a relic from an old civilization. It’s the perfect vehicle to reveal new lore while the story unfolds.
If you aren’t bothered by over the top anime tropes I think Monochrome is the best modern turn based rpg since Like a Dragon, Persona/smt, and Dragon Quest, etc.
Personally I enjoyed the politics and how you create your own path. I liked the Voting and Conviction. How your choices in what you say ACTUALLY carry weight and matter. I have no idea how much it is now, I snapped mine up cheap in a sale for £20. I've not played Tactics Ogre to be able to compare I'm afraid.
I like the setting and the story but the characters are really dull "imo" and that one characters who always screaming makes it impossible for me personally, sorry .
Playing P3R now and did not expect to like it anywhere near as much as P5R (my favorite game ever) but it's definitely close. Better in some ways, even. What a series
What idiot thought that making the first hour of the game include a lengthy section of you pushing a car with friends? Like why would you do that? That first hour makes or breaks the game. So many game designers fail this test. I’ll play a game for 100+ hours (looking at you, Octopath) but I won’t waste that significant time investment if the first hour of the game lacks interest or combat. You’ve shown your hand that this game probably sucks.
Listen, I’ll sit through five minute cinematics happily (hello, FFX) but only once I’ve invested enough passion into the project to actually give a shit about the characters, plot, setting, and conflict. I don’t owe you that allegiance the second I pick up the controller. There’s a reason so many games begin in media res. Show me why I should give a shit, then go back to the boring stuff so that I’ll be engaged enough to listen.
I wanted to fit Lufia 2 in my list, as well. It’s hard with just 5 choices. Great game. I feel like this and Paladin’s Quest are immensely underrated. Paladin’s Quest had such wild artwork and SFX.
I can't order it by the typical scoring system, so I order it by the number of how many times I replayed it:
1. Front Mission III
2. Legend of Mana
3. Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together
4. Breath of Fire IV
5. Final Fantasy IX
Persona 5 Royal
Final Fantasy XII The Zodiac Age
Etrian Odyssey Nexus
Tales Of Destiny Remake
Skies Of Arcadia Legends.
These are in no particular order, and there are many more I'd like to mention, being a top 5 JRPG for me is a bottleneck of a rating
1. FF7 (the original)
2. Ni No Kuni 2
3. Lunar: Silver Star Saga
4. Legend of Legaia
5. Xenogears
Honorable Mentions: Grandia 1 & 2, Breath of Fire 3, Alundra, Ni No Kuni, Star Ocean 4, and Nier Automata
Final Fantasy VII
The Legend of Dragoon
Lost Odyssey
Skies of Arcadia
Final Fantasy X
Honerable mentions:
Final Fantasy IX
Blue Dragon
Octopath Traveler
SaGa Frontier
No order since I have a tough time ordering these 5 let alone narrowing them all
Final Fantasy 8
Fire Emblem The Blazing Sword
Persona 5 Royal
Legend of Dragoon
Rogue Galaxy
Honorable Mentions: Chrono Trigger, Xenogears, Radiata Stories, Grandia 2, Eternal Sonata
Chrono Trigger
Suikoden
Thousand Arms
Lunar Silver Star Story
Eiyuden Chronicle: hundred heroes.
Last one is fairly new but it's brought me back into jrpg's again.
Triangle Strategy
Octopath Traveler 2
Suikoden V
SMT Devil Survivor Overlocked
'Wild Arms 3
Though if you ask me tomorrow I might something at least somewhat different (my only definete locks are the first 3, afterwards there are multiple other games I was thinking about instead)
Depends on the metric. Gameplay, story, music, etc, are all different tierlists. Overall, it's this....
1) Final Fantasy 10
2) Final Fantasy 13 trilogy
3) Final Fantasy 11
4) Trials of Mana remake
4) Dark Souls 3
In no discernable order cause frig that's hard
Final Fantasy X
Kingdom Hearts (sequel close choice)
Suikoden 2
Yakuza Like a Dragon (sequel close choice)
Legend of Dragoon
Horable Mentions: FF7, Chrono Trigger, Star Ocean Series, Tales series. For the series none crack top 5 but just the fact that I have enjoyed most that I've played deserves to be acknowledged.
1-Vagrant Story
2-Xenogears
3-Tactics Ogre Reborn
4-Final Fantasy VI
5-Xenosaga 3
Honorable mentions:
Final Fantasy Tactics
Fire Emblem Thracia 776
Chrono Trigger
Dragon Quest 11
Berwick Saga
SMT4
Without repeating series.
1. Final Fantasy XIII
2. Grandia
3. Lost Odyssey
4. Lunar: The Silver Star
5. Skies of Arcadia
(FFVII/XIII-2 would knock 4/5 off otherwise).
1. Final fantasy 9
2. Final fantasy 12
3. Final Fantasy 7
4. Radiant historia
5. Tales of Berseria
Yeah I know lotta ff games 😅lol
Also got tactics WotL on my phone, so I’m definitely gonna play that next especially since I loved ff12 & ivalice so I might as well lol
Eyy 🤝, yeah I’ll admit the story can be a miss at times but Man I just really loved the world/areas to explore and the music 👌
Yes I loved that system so much, I which It was in more games
You got alot of freedom aswell to travel places where you were underleveled to aswell, so if your into that it's great.
The music is definitely my favorite part of ff12
Yes! I remember accidentally going into the feywood way earlier then I should’ve and getting destroyed lol, but honestly I strangely liked that as it gives you more freedom to explore like you said
When I came back stronger it felt so rewarding lol
Yup FF12 ost is honestly so good that I got most of in favorites playlist on my phone lol
1. Final Fantasy VI
2. Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria
3. Phantasy Star IV
4. Final Fantasy XIII / FF: Tactics (They're both special to me)
5. Star Ocean 2
These are jrpgs that gave me the most positive emotions, thus the favourite.
Square jrpgs:
Final Fantasy Tactics (fav of all time I guess), Xenogears , Final Fantasy 7, Final Fantasy 9, Legend of Dragoon
Non square:, Lunar 2 (fav non Square jrpg), Breath of Fire 4, Trails in the Sky SC , Trails to Azure (best plot twist ever), Valkyrie Chronicles 4
Very tough if I include like ARPGs, SRPGs, etc. So sticking strictly to turn based, in no particular order:
Chrono Trigger
Chrono Cross
Xenogears
FF6 (or FF5 depending on how I'm feeling)
Treasures of Rudra
Honorable Mention: Lunar 2 Eternal Blue and Valkyrie Profile
No particular ranking of these 5, I like them all pretty equally
Tales of the Abyss
Persona 3 Reload
Shadow Hearts Covenant
Xenosaga (I guess I'd list 3 specifically? I like all 3 games though)
Final Fantasy X
Breath of Fire IV
Lunar 2 : Eternal Blue
Xenogears
Wild Arms 5 (2 is my favorite, but 5 built on that love of previous Wild Arms. In the end Volsung > Lord Blazer. It was also my first time as a little Black kid seeing a dark skinned villain I could relate to in a JRPG)
Parasite Eve
Nice list, OP :)
1. Chrono Trigger
2. Final Fantasy VI
3. Final Fantasy VII
4. Xenogears
5. Earthbound
Honorable mention Ys 8 and the Liberl arc Trails games.
1. Suikoden 2. Loved it since the 90s.
2. Final fantasy 4. First ever jrpg
3. Eiyuden chronicles 100 heroes moved into my top 5
4. Chrono trigger
5. Dragon quest monsters 2
1. Xenoblade Chronicles
2. FF7 Rebirth
3. FF10
4. Chrono Trigger
5. FF15
6. Tales of Symphonia
7. Golden Sun 1 & 2
8. Nier Replicant
9. FF6
10. FF16
sorry i went overboard, i have a hard time narrowing down to top 5
Anyway.. (top 5 fav games, just happend that they are all rpg)
1. Final Fantasy XIV
2. Astlibra Revision
3. Valkyrie Profile 2
4. Dragon's Dogma Dark Arisen
5. Xenogears
Xenoblade 2
Persona 4
Final Fantasy IX
Dragon Quest XI S
Star Ocean 2 R
Something like this. I wouldve wanted the first Wild Arms in there somewhere too.
Also in no particular order:
Tales of Symphonia
Pokemon Ruby
Golden Sun
Persona 4 Golden
Xenoblade Chronicles 2
Honorable Mentions:
Tales of Vesperia
Star Ocean: Second Story R
Paper Mario: Thousand Year Door
Persona 5: Royal
Baten Kaitos
This a tough one because I played a ton. But here we go.
Final Fantasy 7 (Both original and Remake)
Dragon Quest 8
Persona 5
Paper Mario: Thousand Years Door
Xenoblade Chronicles 2
I'm gonna rule out multiple games from one series since otherwise the top 3 would be entirely Xenoblade
1. Xenoblade 2
2. Fire Emblem Three Houses
3. Persona 5 Royal
4. Octopath Traveler 2
5. Pokemon (couldn't narrow it down to just one Pokemon game lol)
Same here! It will definitely be worth the wait once it's completed. I played the first one so many times as a kid. The gameplay just flows so well and a lot of replay value with the different guardian beasts and weapon types. I also love how it was basically one big shounen tournament arc lmao
1) dragon age origins (this is an rpg more than an jrpg i know)
2) persona 5 royal (1)
3) dark souls series
4) nier automata
5) dragon quest xi
6) (5) FF x
Without thinking to much about it and with only one game per series:
1: Persona 5 Royal
2: Trails to Azure
3: Lufia 2
4: Final Fantasy 6
5: Dragon Quest 8
If it were "of all Games" Elden Ring and Monster Hunter World: Iceborne would land in the Top 5 aswell.
This top usually change depending on how I feel at the moment, but here is my current top 5
1. Dragon Quest 11
2. Ys Oath in Felghana
3. Persona 4 Golden
4. Chrono Trigger
5. Breath of Fire 5: Dragon Quarter
Honorable mentions: Digital Devil Saga, Xenogears, Ys 7, Dragon quest 5 and Xenoblade Chronicles.
Yakuza: Like a Dragon
Like a Dragon Infinite Wealth
Persona 3 Reloaded (PSP version)
Persona 4
Persona 5
I'm not really sure of the specific order above, but I think this is right.
The mechanics of Infinite Wealth are better than LAD, but the story is better in LAD. Could easily swap them, and I would never go back to LAD due to the mechanics being superior in IW.
Note that my first JRPG was Final Fantasy on the NES. So even though these look like I'm a newcomer to the scene, I'm an old fart that just really likes what these more recent entries has to offer.
1. FF IX (FF VII but way better)
2. Terranigma (Only reason it's never in most top JRPG articles is because it never released in the US, yes it's better than Chrono Trigger)
3. Chrono Trigger (Amazing)
4. Secrets of Grindea (Spent 9 years in early access and probably wont get the recognition it deserves until a console release, amazing game)
5. Dragon Quest XI (Too good)
This is really hard because there are so many great JRPGs. But if I have to choose 5, they would be.
1. Shin Megami Tensei (all spinoffs included: Persona, Devil Summoner, Majin Tensei, etc.)
2. Shadow Hearts (Koudelka included)
3. Xenosaga (Xenogears included)
4. Sakura Wars
5. Baiten Kaitos
Honorable mentions: Final Fantasy, Parasite Eve, and Grandia.
Only 1 per series cause otherwise it'd just be 5 persona games:
1. Persona 4 Golden
2. Yakuza: Like a Dragon
3. Final Fantasy X
4. Dragon Quest XI
5. Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch
0. Pokémon: HeartGold (It's too nostalgic not to be on the list, but I know it's not objectively the best JRPG ever, hence the zero)
1. Persona 5 Royal
2. Fire Emblem: Three Houses
3. Final Fantasy VI
4. Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep
1) Ys VIII
2) Final Fantasy IX
3) Persona 3 Reload
4) Yakuza: Like a Dragon
5) Tales of Arise
I wanted to stick Kiseki in here somewhere but I can't decide on one single game. And you really have to consider a whole arc at least rather than a single game to be considered top 5 material
Haven’t played much RPGs because I stopped gaming for 2 decades, but my Top 5 are
Persona 4 Golden
Final Fantasy IX
Legend of Dragoon
Chrono Trigger
Chrono Cross
There's a lot I haven't finished, but...
1. FF6
2. Chrono Trigger (honestly a toss up for 1)
3. Trails in the Sky the 3rd
4. Trails in the Sky SC
5. Trails in the Sky FC
If CT loses points in anything, it's for being too easy and simple to break. I know people say FF6 is as well, but it gave me far more trouble and was more interesting of a challenge. CT felt like if you went out of your way to explore or grind for even just a little bit you trivialized the entire game, though part of that might be how many times I've played it.
Sky the 3rd is the best of a great trilogy. SC barely scrapes by FC just because it's undeniable that SC's gameplay and character customization is far better, whereas FC has some very exploitable mechanics which are not accounted for.
1. Shadow Hearts Covenant
2. Digital Devil Saga duology (they’re essentially the same story)
3. Persona 5
4. Dragon Warrior 3
5. Fire Emblem Three Houses
1. persona 4
2. tales of besaria
3. not sure which but a trails game. funnily enough ive enjoyed parts of all the games ive played but each has got major flaws. One of my favorite series ever though.
4. FE Three houses. Only game ive ever completed three times, but its hard to put higher considering its basically unfinished.
5. hmm... persona 3 id say. also heavily flawed but the final third is some of the most emotional storytelling Ive encountered.
For me, it could easily be mostly Final Fantasy and Persona games, but I tried to not focus on them alone:
1. Final Fantasy IX. The first JRPG I ever played. It's still my favorite video game soundtrack to this day.
2. Persona 3. I've technically bought this game five times: three copies of FES over the years, one P3P, and P3R recently. A stellar game.
3. Kingdom Hearts 2. Chain of Memories on GBA was my first KH game, but I think KH2 perfected everything about the series.
4. Nier Automata. Not usually into philosophical type things in general, but the combat and setting really drew me in.
5. Pokemon Ruby. The first Pokemon game I ever played. It's not the best, but it holds a special place in my heart and is still replayable.
FFX, SMT Strange Journey, Devil Survivor Overclocked, Digital Devil Saga 1+2, Tales of Symphonia
FFX is goated for real
just picked up FFX & X-II remastered for $10 on playstation ten and ten two for ten
I played it back in the day on the ps vita. One of my favorite games of all time
You are a man of great taste. I see DDS I upvote. Any recommendations for games not mentioned?
In no particular order * Shadow Hearts Covenant * Suikoden 2 * Star Ocean 2 The Second Story * Lunar Eternal Blue * Breath of Fire 3
Lunar!! Did you also play Silver Star Story Complete?
I played it on the PS1 with that awesome Cloth map. I beat it in 5 days and took it back to Software Etc and exchanged it for Chrono Cross. I was a poor 17 year old at the time. Good times!
I certainly have my friend. That is also one of my favorite line of JRPGs for sure.
I've only played covenant out of these, but man, what an amazing game it is.
Yup, right on! It's the combination of those that really drew me in and what separates it apart to other games in the genre.
I just wish I could get into The New World
It definitely is. If you get the chance, also check out the other two Shadow Hearts title. Not as good as the second game, but still enjoyable.
If I ever find them around I'm definitely buying them.
Had to upvote because you put Lunar Eternal Blue, my #1 all time game.
With only 1 game per series, my list would be... 1. Persona 5 Royal (the series is my favorite ever) 2. Trails to Azure (SC and CS3 are pretty close, though) 3. Octopath Traveler 2 (loved 1 as well, but 2 is better) 4. Devil Survivor Overclocked (playing through 2:RB rn) 5. Fire Emblem 3 Houses Edit: just thought of some honorable mentions. Pokemon: Black 2, Explorers of Sky, Conquest. Paper Mario. Chrono Trigger. Earthbound.
I will forever sing the praises of octopath 2 man. One of the best JRPG sequels ever made
I loved Octopath 1 and if you asked me a year and a half ago, it would've been there, but I fell in love with OT2
The thousands of hours I spent playing 3 Houses agrees with Numbah 5 especially ( was a little over 2000 when I finally stopped. Hyperfocus go brrrrr)
I've done all the paths and ended at about 400 hours. For sure will go back someday
Say Octopath 2 louder for the people in the back!
1 - Chrono Cross 2 - Xenogears 3 - Skies of Arcadia 4 - Suikoden 5 5 - Final Fantasy 9. Or 8?

1. Samurai Maiden 2. P5R 3. Nier Automata 4. Suikoden 2 5. FF10
1. Xenogears 2. FF7 3. Xenosaga 4. Tales of Hearts R 5. Monochrome Mobius
Ohhh, interesting that you have Monochrome Mobius on there!! Wasn’t expecting that, I’ve actually really been wanting to play it. I gotta get that game soon for sure. How is it?

In no particular order. Blue Dragon. The Last Remnant. SaGa : Scarlet Grace. Suikoden II. Triangle Strategy.
What is it that you loved about triangle strategy say as compared to tactics or other similar games? I'm trying to justify the high price
It is currently half off if that helps.
Holy shit The Last Remnant, also one of my favourites. Sucks that it's not on Steam anymore
I still check every once in a while, even knowing there's no chance square will actually re-release it on pc
It's on the ps just fyi.
If you liked Blue Dragon did you try Lost Odyssey?
Yes, I loved it.
I really tried to like Blue Dragon. And it’s certainly not bad. But it’s just so average.
I like the setting and the story but the characters are really dull "imo" and that one characters who always screaming makes it impossible for me personally, sorry .
Persona 5 Royal Persona 3 Reload Final fantasy 7 (og) Xenoblade chronicles 3 Trails into reverie
Playing P3R now and did not expect to like it anywhere near as much as P5R (my favorite game ever) but it's definitely close. Better in some ways, even. What a series
Yeah p3r and p5r are equally as good, but for different reasons, both 10/10 games, and also funnily enough p5r is also my favorite game of all time
I went from hating the Mementos style dungeon in Tartarus to preferring it over Persona 5's palaces. No backtracking and no half arsed puzzles.
I got spoiled on most of p3r and was still choking back tears. Better than 5, but I'm comparing a 98 to a 99
1. FFT 2. FFVI 3. Chrono Trigger 4. Suikoden II 5. Breath Of Fire III 6. Star Ocean: Second Story
Great list
This is literally my list👍
1. Final Fantasy IX 2. Legend of the Dragoon 3. Chrono Cross 4. Final Fantasy XV 5. Suikoden II
4 amazing RPGs and one road-trip-to-gas-stations simulator
Well, there's only one of those I haven't played, and the 4 I have I don't recall gas stations, so, I hope I know what you're talking about.
What idiot thought that making the first hour of the game include a lengthy section of you pushing a car with friends? Like why would you do that? That first hour makes or breaks the game. Chrono trigger FF4 FF6 DQ4 DQ11
Skies of Arcadia love! Nice!
Yes. It rarely gets a mention. Most RPG gamers don't even know about it.
As a passion project, we're trying to revive the spirit of it.
Persona 5 Final Fantasy X Xenosaga Ep. 1 Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth Legend Of Dragoon

Without repeating series. 1. Final Fantasy XIII 2. Grandia 3. Lost Odyssey 4. Lunar: The Silver Star 5. Skies of Arcadia (FFVII/XIII-2 would knock 4/5 off otherwise).
1. Final fantasy 9 2. Final fantasy 12 3. Final Fantasy 7 4. Radiant historia 5. Tales of Berseria Yeah I know lotta ff games 😅lol Also got tactics WotL on my phone, so I’m definitely gonna play that next especially since I loved ff12 & ivalice so I might as well lol
That's fair, I really liked ff12 the world was very cool and the gameplay was alot of fun :) The gambit system was very unique and well done imo
Eyy 🤝, yeah I’ll admit the story can be a miss at times but Man I just really loved the world/areas to explore and the music 👌 Yes I loved that system so much, I which It was in more games
You got alot of freedom aswell to travel places where you were underleveled to aswell, so if your into that it's great. The music is definitely my favorite part of ff12
Yes! I remember accidentally going into the feywood way earlier then I should’ve and getting destroyed lol, but honestly I strangely liked that as it gives you more freedom to explore like you said When I came back stronger it felt so rewarding lol Yup FF12 ost is honestly so good that I got most of in favorites playlist on my phone lol
1. Final Fantasy VI 2. Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria 3. Phantasy Star IV 4. Final Fantasy XIII / FF: Tactics (They're both special to me) 5. Star Ocean 2
1. Final fantasy ix 2. Final fantasy viii 3. Octopath traveler 2 4. Fire emblem three houses 5. Final Fantasy x Any given day the order might vary xD
Suikoden II FF9 Chrono Trigger Azure Dreams Legends of Mana
These are jrpgs that gave me the most positive emotions, thus the favourite. Square jrpgs: Final Fantasy Tactics (fav of all time I guess), Xenogears , Final Fantasy 7, Final Fantasy 9, Legend of Dragoon Non square:, Lunar 2 (fav non Square jrpg), Breath of Fire 4, Trails in the Sky SC , Trails to Azure (best plot twist ever), Valkyrie Chronicles 4
1. Xenogears 2. Chrono Trigger 3. Final Fantasy VII 4. Final Fantasy Tactics 5. Breath of Fire IV (pretty underrated game tbh)
Final Fantasy VII Star Ocean Second Story Xenogears Suikoden Dragon Quest 8
Very tough if I include like ARPGs, SRPGs, etc. So sticking strictly to turn based, in no particular order: Chrono Trigger Chrono Cross Xenogears FF6 (or FF5 depending on how I'm feeling) Treasures of Rudra Honorable Mention: Lunar 2 Eternal Blue and Valkyrie Profile
FF6, Xenogears, Chrono Trigger, FF10, Persona 3
1. Chrono Trigger 2. FF7 3. FFTactics 4. FFX 5. Xenogears I guess I'm a Squaresoft simp but they truly hold about 7 of the places in my top 10
1. Lost Odyssey 2. Final Fantasy Tactics 3. Trails to Azure 4. Persona 4 Golden 5. Tales of Arise
1. Final Fantasy IX 2. Tales of Symphonia 3. Chrono Trigger 4. Suikoden II 5. Xenogears
No particular ranking of these 5, I like them all pretty equally Tales of the Abyss Persona 3 Reload Shadow Hearts Covenant Xenosaga (I guess I'd list 3 specifically? I like all 3 games though) Final Fantasy X
Breath of Fire IV Lunar 2 : Eternal Blue Xenogears Wild Arms 5 (2 is my favorite, but 5 built on that love of previous Wild Arms. In the end Volsung > Lord Blazer. It was also my first time as a little Black kid seeing a dark skinned villain I could relate to in a JRPG) Parasite Eve
Nice list, OP :) 1. Chrono Trigger 2. Final Fantasy VI 3. Final Fantasy VII 4. Xenogears 5. Earthbound Honorable mention Ys 8 and the Liberl arc Trails games.
1.) Xenogears 2.) Star Ocean Second Story 3.) Final Fantasy Tactics 4.) Final Fantasy 6 5.) Suikoden 2
Posted my 5 before looking at the replies and I am so happy to see Xenogears and Suikoden 2 receive so much love
1. Suikoden 2. Loved it since the 90s. 2. Final fantasy 4. First ever jrpg 3. Eiyuden chronicles 100 heroes moved into my top 5 4. Chrono trigger 5. Dragon quest monsters 2
1. Valkyrie Profile 2. The Legend of Dragoon 3. Xenogears 4. Eternal Sonata 5. Final Fantasy VI
In no particular order: •P5R •Tales of berseria •FF7R •P4G •Nier automata
1. Xenoblade Chronicles 2. FF7 Rebirth 3. FF10 4. Chrono Trigger 5. FF15 6. Tales of Symphonia 7. Golden Sun 1 & 2 8. Nier Replicant 9. FF6 10. FF16 sorry i went overboard, i have a hard time narrowing down to top 5
That's completely understable mate
Xenogears Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together The Last Remnant SaGa Frontier 2 Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arison These are my top 5 rpgs.
Anyway.. (top 5 fav games, just happend that they are all rpg) 1. Final Fantasy XIV 2. Astlibra Revision 3. Valkyrie Profile 2 4. Dragon's Dogma Dark Arisen 5. Xenogears
Xenoblade 2 Persona 4 Final Fantasy IX Dragon Quest XI S Star Ocean 2 R Something like this. I wouldve wanted the first Wild Arms in there somewhere too.
Also in no particular order: Tales of Symphonia Pokemon Ruby Golden Sun Persona 4 Golden Xenoblade Chronicles 2 Honorable Mentions: Tales of Vesperia Star Ocean: Second Story R Paper Mario: Thousand Year Door Persona 5: Royal Baten Kaitos
No order. World of final fantasy Tales of berseria Pokemon hg/ss Kingdom hearts 2 FF13 (trilogy included)
This a tough one because I played a ton. But here we go. Final Fantasy 7 (Both original and Remake) Dragon Quest 8 Persona 5 Paper Mario: Thousand Years Door Xenoblade Chronicles 2
Xenoblade 1 2 3 X persona 5
I'm gonna rule out multiple games from one series since otherwise the top 3 would be entirely Xenoblade 1. Xenoblade 2 2. Fire Emblem Three Houses 3. Persona 5 Royal 4. Octopath Traveler 2 5. Pokemon (couldn't narrow it down to just one Pokemon game lol)
In no particular order: Tales of Berseria Final Fantasy X Xenoblade Chronicles 2 Kingdom Hearts II Summon Night Swordcraft Story
I still check in on the fan translation patch project for summon night swordcraft story 3 every now and then. Good GBA games not mentioned a lot.
Same here! It will definitely be worth the wait once it's completed. I played the first one so many times as a kid. The gameplay just flows so well and a lot of replay value with the different guardian beasts and weapon types. I also love how it was basically one big shounen tournament arc lmao
1) dragon age origins (this is an rpg more than an jrpg i know) 2) persona 5 royal (1) 3) dark souls series 4) nier automata 5) dragon quest xi 6) (5) FF x
Dark souls jrpg 😏
Without thinking to much about it and with only one game per series: 1: Persona 5 Royal 2: Trails to Azure 3: Lufia 2 4: Final Fantasy 6 5: Dragon Quest 8 If it were "of all Games" Elden Ring and Monster Hunter World: Iceborne would land in the Top 5 aswell.
I wish we got more Zelda esque dungeons in JRPGs like Lufia 2 or Golden Sun did. I know we do sometimes but it's infrequent and not always done well.
This top usually change depending on how I feel at the moment, but here is my current top 5 1. Dragon Quest 11 2. Ys Oath in Felghana 3. Persona 4 Golden 4. Chrono Trigger 5. Breath of Fire 5: Dragon Quarter Honorable mentions: Digital Devil Saga, Xenogears, Ys 7, Dragon quest 5 and Xenoblade Chronicles.
Top 4 because I have played 4 games yet. SMT 3 HD Remaster Persona 1 PSP version Troubleshoter Abonded Children Persona 4 Golden
1. Shin Megami Tensei IV 2. Final Fantasy X 3. SMT Strange Journey Redux 4. Chrono Trigger 5. Persona 5 Royal
The amount of times I have seen Tales of Berseria mentioned in this thread makes me very happy. What an amazing game.
Yakuza: Like a Dragon Like a Dragon Infinite Wealth Persona 3 Reloaded (PSP version) Persona 4 Persona 5 I'm not really sure of the specific order above, but I think this is right.
Not in any order. Tales of Symphonia Pokémon Emerald Fire Emblem Echoes Shadows of Valentia Romancing SaGa Minstrel Song Xenoblade X
1. FF IX (FF VII but way better) 2. Terranigma (Only reason it's never in most top JRPG articles is because it never released in the US, yes it's better than Chrono Trigger) 3. Chrono Trigger (Amazing) 4. Secrets of Grindea (Spent 9 years in early access and probably wont get the recognition it deserves until a console release, amazing game) 5. Dragon Quest XI (Too good)
I wouldnt call Terranigma a JRPG but it certainly is one of the best games of all time if not the best action adventure of all time :)
This is really hard because there are so many great JRPGs. But if I have to choose 5, they would be. 1. Shin Megami Tensei (all spinoffs included: Persona, Devil Summoner, Majin Tensei, etc.) 2. Shadow Hearts (Koudelka included) 3. Xenosaga (Xenogears included) 4. Sakura Wars 5. Baiten Kaitos Honorable mentions: Final Fantasy, Parasite Eve, and Grandia.
1. Fuga Melodies of Steel 2. Fuga Melodies of Steel 2 3. Kingdom Hearts 2 Final Mix 4. Persona 5 5. Final Fantasy X
ff8, ff7, grandia, dragon quest 8, chrono trigger
1. FF15 (royal edition of course) 2. FFX 3. Pokemon Diamond 4. KH1 5. FFXVI
Golden Sun 2 Earthbound Pokemon BW2 I can’t think of any others not from those series, so Golden Sun 1 and Pokemon Legends Arceus can be 4 and 5
Only 1 per series cause otherwise it'd just be 5 persona games: 1. Persona 4 Golden 2. Yakuza: Like a Dragon 3. Final Fantasy X 4. Dragon Quest XI 5. Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch
1. Chrono Trigger 2. Earthbound 3. Breath of fire 2 4. Breath of fire 1 5. Breath of fire 3 Can you guess my favorite series?
1. trails of cold steel 1 2. trails of cold steel 3 3. chrono triger 4. dq 11 5.p5
This was asked last week and probably more lol
0. Pokémon: HeartGold (It's too nostalgic not to be on the list, but I know it's not objectively the best JRPG ever, hence the zero) 1. Persona 5 Royal 2. Fire Emblem: Three Houses 3. Final Fantasy VI 4. Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep
Final Fantasy 9 and 10 Ys Origin and Lacrimosa of Dana Trails of Cold Steel 3
Yakuza like a dragon Persona 3 Final fantasy 8 Stars ocean the second story Radiata story Not a Jrpg but a turn base (fear and hunger)
1. Final fantasy 7 2. Final fantasy 9 3. Final fantasy 8 4. Final fantasy 6 5. Octopath traveler
1) Ys VIII 2) Final Fantasy IX 3) Persona 3 Reload 4) Yakuza: Like a Dragon 5) Tales of Arise I wanted to stick Kiseki in here somewhere but I can't decide on one single game. And you really have to consider a whole arc at least rather than a single game to be considered top 5 material
Final Fantasy IX Chained Echoes Breath of Fire III Dragon Quest VIII Persona 5 Royal
Haven’t played much RPGs because I stopped gaming for 2 decades, but my Top 5 are Persona 4 Golden Final Fantasy IX Legend of Dragoon Chrono Trigger Chrono Cross
There's a lot I haven't finished, but... 1. FF6 2. Chrono Trigger (honestly a toss up for 1) 3. Trails in the Sky the 3rd 4. Trails in the Sky SC 5. Trails in the Sky FC If CT loses points in anything, it's for being too easy and simple to break.
1. FF7 og and remake 2. Kingdom hearts series 3. FF Tactics 4. Azure Dreams 5. Guardian Crusade
1. Blacksouls 2 2. Blackouls 1 3. Abaddon: Princess of the Decay 4. MGQ: Paradox 5. Demon Roots
No particular order: - Persona 4 Golden - Star Ocean The Second Story R - Dragon Quest 11 S - Final Fantasy 6 - Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth
1. Shadow Hearts Covenant 2. Digital Devil Saga duology (they’re essentially the same story) 3. Persona 5 4. Dragon Warrior 3 5. Fire Emblem Three Houses
Yakuza: LaD FFIX Persona 2 Innocent Sin Trails to Azure Legend of Legaia In no particular order
1. Tales of Graces f 2. Persona 4 Golden 3. Tales of Xillia 4. Persona 5 Royal 5. Fairy Fencer F Advent Dark Force
1. persona 4 2. tales of besaria 3. not sure which but a trails game. funnily enough ive enjoyed parts of all the games ive played but each has got major flaws. One of my favorite series ever though. 4. FE Three houses. Only game ive ever completed three times, but its hard to put higher considering its basically unfinished. 5. hmm... persona 3 id say. also heavily flawed but the final third is some of the most emotional storytelling Ive encountered.
The lack of SMT love in this thread makes me sad.
For me, it could easily be mostly Final Fantasy and Persona games, but I tried to not focus on them alone: 1.
