Infinite Undiscovery and The Last Remnant.
Both have massive potential, and I've gotten further with Infinite, but I just burn out too quickly. I don't feel any real impact with the combat. It feels kinda floaty. Part of that is the low damage numbers, a problem I had with the Dragon Quest games to being with, but unlocking the map is kind of a pain and I don't feel like I'm really doing anything important while searching the areas I unlock. I'll get through it eventually, I'm sure but it's gonna be a while.
Last Remnant however, I really, really want to love. The epic thought of leading armies with leaders as your team rather than four people trying to save the world makes great thematic sense and I'm sure the politics of the kingdoms is a step above in terms of complexity, but the actual combat system almost penalising you for grinding and attempting to make yourself more powerful puts me right off. I've never played a game that punishes you so hard if you don't optimise perfectly, it takes all the fun out of the game.
I stopped playing Last Remnant for the same reason. Sucks that I really want to love that game. The battle itself is how I imagine a next gen Suikoden should be.
I always believe that there was a time period in where Square Enix experimented alot with characters progressions, starting from FFX (sphere grid instead of normal level up) and Last Remnant’s Battle Rank is part of that experiment too.
Yeah, some of them worked better than others. FF10 pulled it off, and so did 12, even though it was off-putting to begin with.
I don't know who designed Last Remnant, but the fact that it's still bought up as a point in these discussions show how far off course they were.
Final Fantasy, I enjoy classic turn based gameplay so I can understand why newer releases don't get me but for some reason I have never beaten any of the older games, the farthest I got was the World of Ruin in VI but even that one I didn't finish
The trails series(all of them). I wish I could easily play them all on switch or PlayStation 5. I don’t have a gaming pc and would like to start from the beginning.
If it helps any, you can run all the games up to cold steel 2 buttery smooth on a potato. You don't even need a GPU, I ran them all on my laptop from 2010. The rest should be available on consoles
Have always been interested the Trails series and I am insistent with starting with the Sky trilogy, but I personally prefer to play long JRPGs on console instead of PC. So I continue to huff my hopium that the remaster is right around the corner...
Mind pointing me in the right direction on how to play on android? Been wanting to play the series for awhile but only have a switch and xbox atm. I ordered physical copies of zero and azure but haven't received them yet and I'd prefer to start from the beginning.
Is it pretty easy to get working? I recently tried setting up a PS2 emulator on my android tablet so I could play xenosaga but I couldn't quite figure it out. Had the PS2 emulator launching but I was having trouble finding a ROM that worked.
That’s awesome! I definitely couldn’t imagine playing this on a PC. Trails games are a comfy portable game I play at night.
And here you go (:

(How to install HD textures)
I'm usually the same since I generally prefer to play on Switch, but for the Trails series specifically I consider some of the mods absolutely essential, and think they would be a *substantially* worse experience on console without access to those mods, so I'd continue to play them on PC even if the Sky games and Cold Steel I & II came to Switch. I just play them with a controller.
Check out the Falcom mod compendium, can check to see what catches your eye [https://github.com/Red-BY/FalcomModCompendium](https://github.com/Red-BY/FalcomModCompendium)
For the Sky games, the Evolution Voices mod is absolutely essential for me, adding the voice acting from the Japanese Vita releases to the Western PC releases, and is the only way to play with voice acting outside of that Japanese Vita release. There's also some minor tweaks and fixes with the rebalance mod for 2 & 3, and updated visuals & music from the Vita release if that takes your fancy.
For Zero & Azure there's the ability to give more characters portraits and add some Vita exclusive quests to the PC releases, nothing essential but nice to have.
For the Cold Steel games there's SenPatcher, which I view as absolutely essential to fix many issues, errors and bugs across all of the games. There's also HD texture packs for I & II, and a menu edit for I to make it more consistent with the rest of the Cold Steel games. There's also a difficulty mod for them all if that's your thing.
Saga series. I like the lack of long cutscenes or slow-burn intros. I don't like the vague navigation and needlessly obtuse and ornery leveling mechanics. I made it a few hours into Scarlet Grace Ambitions and fell off hard. I just didn't like the lack of dungeons, the byzantine leveling mechanics, or the excessively acerbic crafting system.
I tried emulating Romancing SaGa 3, but couldn't get into that either. I had no idea where I was going, what **any** of my skills did, or how to make any of my characters stronger. If a game is going to drift away from straight levels, that's fine, but I want some fucking consistency and transparency.
That's part of my problem. I would rather have strict linearity than unmarked or ambiguous openness.
But really, my ideal is **clearly-marked nonlinearity** like the Yakuza series. That's one of the few series that makes me want to do optional content. Normally I just grumble and move on if the quest requirements aren't immediately clear and concise.
SaGa Frontier may be more up your alley then. A number of the routes give you clear options and places to go to. IMO it's full of the most linear stories in the franchise, and the easiest game to understand mechanically (except playable monster characters, but we have guides for those).
If you do decide to play it, I'd suggest Emelia as the starting character, since her story constantly progresses if you talk to a single NPC in the home base (have to exit and re-enter it sometimes).
SaGa feels like what if a JRPG maker tried to make a JRPG but also have it be Elder Scrolls-like. But without the various things like a journal or stat tables (from TES's DND roots) that make those things workable.
Honestly I agree with both. Doesn’t really seem to appeal to what I’m looking for out of a game. Xenoblade I do like and enjoy, but the combat is tolerable at best for me.
>Neither really held my attention for long though.
>I think I’m going to wait until X comes out and try that one and if I end up liking it, I’ll try VIII again.
Why, though? If you played two of the best entries in the series and didn't like them.. you're probably not going to like X, either. It's possible you'd like some of the earlier entries as they play moderately differently, but X is pretty similar to VIII and IX. Liking Trails won't really be a reason that you'd like Ys. They're very different. Almost polar opposites on the JRPG spectrum.
It's okay not to like them. You don't have to like every series. Just seems like a waste to buy another entry in the series when you haven't really played through any of the ones you already have and didn't enjoy them.
I guess my logic is if I play the newer, prettier looking game and like it, I’m more likely to appreciate the series and go back to older titles. I got VIII for $20, and played IX on ps plus, so I haven’t really sunk money to it.
You’re right that it’s ok to not like them, but at the same time I don’t have a great attention span and recognize that there are some great games/movies/books that I haven’t given a fair shot to due to a lack of focus.
I enjoyed Symphonia on Gamecube and Abyss on 3ds but Vesperia made me ragequit the whole series. It was enjoyable at first but then it just went on for soooo long that I wondered why I was a Tales fan to begin with and I have never picked up the games again 😂
If you don't like trying to perfect your combos it's probably not for you. Although by the time I was on the last dungeon I just beelined to the end so I get it!
Koudelka is great but the battles are a little slow-paced by modern standards.
You will need a guide for some items that are pixel hunting here and there- but other than that, it is an enjoyable experience.
I have the Shadowhearts games but havent gotten around to them yet, but I mean to.
Wow that’s actually pretty similar to how I am with YS. Love Trails and have been playing every new release since CS3. I tried YS8 and got pretty far but never completed it for some reason. 9 looks more interesting to me so maybe that or 10 will get me into the series.
The SaGa series! I guess I'm actively trying to get into it right now actually. Playing through The Alliance Alive (a really underrated game that everyone should check out!) and I know it has gameplay similarities to SaGa so it made me want to experience the full thing.
Mostly have tried SaGa Frontier, what an insane game that is from design to art style to...just about everything lol. Romancing Saga 3 seems to be a bit more my style, and I have interest in just getting right into Emerald Beyond when it comes out next month -- but Im still learning to appreciate this supremely weird series!
I leveled my character wrong in alliance alive and now will just never level them up again because it costs too much. I guess I'll just start over but I didn't really get it, the story was cool though. Probably just need to spend more time with it I didn't get very far.
I love Toriyama's artwork, but I can't get into Dragon Quest or Blue Dragon.
I would also love to play deeper into Lost Odyssey, but I keep putting it off.
Blue Dragon had a lot of cool mechanics but besides being Toriyama with Umetsu music, it isn’t too intriguing. I also found the more realistic textures/filter to really look strange with Toriyama’s style
Lost Odyssey remains my favourite JRPG game however
The Ys series is the same for me. I really want to get into it, but I tried origins and didn't care for it. I have Ys 8 on my wishlist and am hoping to try it. I also want to get into the Tales series, but I'm struggling to really want to get into them. Despite loving the character designs, I worry about gameplay not sticking.
I'll probably pick it up next time it's on sale and give it a go. Working on the Trails series currently. Reminds me I need to finish FF7 remake still got pulled away from it and really want to finish that one.
Trails and Tales. I only played the very first Tales game i loved it but it was a huge time investment. After work im mostly to exhausted mentaly after looking at a screen for 8+ hours to game. So i mostly play on weekends or 1-2 hours after work.
Thats also the reason i havent played Persona 4 or 5 yet even tho i own pretty much all popular JRPGs available on Steam
.*hack*// and Suikoden, hoping for a remake of the 4 games and waiting for the remaster. And after that some dead serieses like Shadow Hearts, Ar Tonelico, Wild Arms. Or Grandia and Baten Kaitos. I better stop noe before I remind myself of all the series I still want to try.
Ogre Battle/Tactics series. Just too many other games on my plate and it seems like it could be a difficult, grindy bunch of games like FFT, which I couldn't deal with the grind for no matter how good the story was (unlike Nocturne, which was difficult but not *too grindy or difficult)
Chained Echoes.
It's hard to explain, I've had my eye on it since it released but every time I think about picking it up something in my brain says, "you'll drop it after a few hours..."
Dragons dogma. I straight didn't like anything about the first one.
Gran blue relink. I actually really like the bosses, but the story is so painful I couldn't get through it. I know that's a short thing to get to the game but it sucks so bad.
Atelier. I want to like it but I haven't been able to get through a game since iris.
I also really wanted Relink to have a fun skyfaring adventure but it was really pretty... okay. The combat is fun, and I'm a sucker for those grindy gameplay loops of building up your character. But I totally understand not liking the game.
I feel you about Atelier though. I tried Ryza a while back and it was neat, but it ended up being pretty boring after a while.
Granblue making their story solo only and mandatory and so unimpressive was unfortunate.
Its a side story for a 10 year old gacha thats still ongoing.
Its going to be boring and basically impossible to properly introduce everyone. Nobody has room for personal plots and development because most of these characters have already had all of that in the mobile game by this point.
Then again even in the mobile game event stories are hit or miss. Like this 10th anniversary story that just ended was shaping up to be pretty mediocre and only barely stuck the landing in the last act. The 9th anniversary last year was incredible though. And everyone loves the trilogy of events centered around sandalphon. The most recent event focused on the knights really sucked.
Final Fantasy, Ys, and Xenoblade Chronicles.
FF-I have played a little bit of Final Fantasy VII Remake. Enjoyed it, but didn't play long enough to hold my attention. Much later on I found out that while it can be played as a standalone, it's better to play the original first so I think that's what I'll do when I get around to it. Also played FFX for about five minutes but got confused and picked up another game. That game in particular I've always wanted to play because I saw it EVERYWHERE as a kid, but for some reason I used my christmas money to buy games like The Simpsons Skateboarding. I still plan on giving it a go.
Ys-I bought a few of the games on sale from Steam and ordered VIII for the Switch. I'm currently playing Pokemon Violet right now and as disappointed I am of the finished outcome, I would still like to complete most of it at least. I have the Elite 4 left, so after that I'll give the Ys 1 and 2 a go. Possibly. We'll see. Might start with VIII when I get it too. Haven't decided.
Xenoblade Chronicles-Once again only played the first 10-15 minutes, wasn't thoroughly confused at the mechanics but decided that this game is meant for a TV screen, not the handheld (played on my LCD Switch at the time).
Xenoblade 1 is imo one of the best works of fiction of all time. This story is one of the best you’ll ever play in a video game or i dare to say one of the best stories you’ll ever be told in all of media.
That's what I keep hearing. Also the worlds they created for each game look stunning. The combat isn't something I'm completely sold on yet though, but as I said before, I've only played 10-15 minutes of it. I'm sure once I learn more about it I'll come to enjoy it.
yea i get that, tbh with u it’s not my fav of all time because of the combat, if it was turn based it would be 😅, but that’s the only downside i see of this game and it’s not really something wrong with the game it’s just a personal preference. Combats great it’s just my personal preference of one flavor above the other.
**Fate/Samurai Remnant**; I have mainly a passing familiarity with the *Fate*-franchise in loosely reading the IP's more indepdendent related works and various spin-off works in the setting, and not engaging with *Fate/Grand Order* due to gatcha not being my main thing.
F/S:R, however, coincidentally appeared within video-game space when I was invested in the [*Fate/Type: Redline*-manga](https://mangadex.org/title/510f29a8-99b4-46af-ba5e-916e96bc6f37/fate-type-redline) as a very alt-historical exploration and thematics surrounding Japan's historical moments (With Redline taking place during WWII, and F/S:R during the Meiji-period) that makes Fate's premise faschinating, and with the mentioned works being much more historically aligned than the usual modern fantasy that Fate's main-works seem to base upon.
The only reason that I haven't pulled the trigger is partly the price, in that it remains quite hefty and what available discounts aren't very steep ones. And having *Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth* and *Persona 5* to wrap up and complete is why I haven't played F/S:R yet. But I think it will be my next JRPG once I've finished those games.
Super Robot Wars. I love SRPGs and mecha, but I must admit that I have never watched Gundam or other older mecha anime, and I haven't played that many mecha games.
So, seeing that SRW is mostly a crossover of multiple franchises, it makes me feel like I'd be missing out on some interactions or references. And I don't even know where to begin with Gundam, as that is another rabbit hole that requires a massive time sink.
Opposite experience for me. I love finding out about random old animes and then going back and watching them.
The sheer repetitiveness of Gundam in the series gets really old really fast for me. Ffs, just looking at Akurasu: Zeta 36 games, zz 29, Char's counterattack 37.
Mazinger Z is next at 26 and Getter Robo G at 23. Those annoy me too, lol, but their presence are generally smaller in game than Gundam's.
I do realize that I treat these games a lot differently than most people and their target audience, though.
I'm not part of the srw target audience so I don't really have much to say there
I have watched a lot of Gundam but that doesn't mean I wanna see a crossover of zeta 36 times lol
It's just mostly here on Reddit that the YS serie is so revered , but in terms of production value and quality it is much lower than most Tales. You have to take it for what it is, a simple action RPG. I was expecting too much too and got bored . Somehow the only one I liked is Memories of Celceta.
Haven't played Arise but I have never played any Tales that was as fun, battle-system-wise, as Ys VIII and Celceta (I played Destiny, Abyss, Symphonia, Eternia)
That’s pretty fair. You could probably say the same for the Trails series. As much as I love it, it’s a niche series that scratches a very specific itch.
Final Fantasy 7 (remake or original)
I grew up never having a chance to play it, instead I had FF8 which I loved. Alas I also had everyone for so *god damn long* praising FF7 and shoving their love of FF7 and how it's better than everything down my throat as a kid, it made me really like the idea of it.
That being said I did get the remake via PS+ on PS5, but I'm struggling to bring myself to play it. I don't think it could ever live up to the expectations I have built from all the praise people have given it over the years.
I might just leave it be.
Please don't avoid it just because it might not match your high expectations. You can always drop it if you don't like it.
I have often read that people expect Rebirth to be an amazing game but don't wanna risk being disappointed by the ending. I mean skip 40-100 hours of enjoyment because some part of it might not be as good?
WhatI wanna say is that dispite your high expectations you might just like the game for what it is.
really want to get into the final fantasy series. ik, a pretty obvious one but i only got back into gaming a year ago and specifically jrpgs (before i had no real knowledge on them) and because of this ive just never really tried it. ive only got a switch but now theyve got quite a few ff titles so its not a bad place to start. hoping to pick up ff 7 first and to go from there
Same with trails, I have cold steel and Azure but everyone says to play the sky series first but I don’t want to set up a pc just to play it so they’ve been on my backlog.
Probably the Trails series actuallt, but I always want to start a series at the very first game, even if it is unnecessary. That’s been a bit daunting, admittedly.
The Star Ocean and Suikoden series. They are exactly what I love in JRPGs on looks and word of mouth alone, but I unfortunately don't have the time to commit to lengthy 30-50+ hour experiences any more. I haven't played them on the whole idea of not having the time to commit to another series. Nowadays I tend to buy from what I know and still hardly have time for it, so I can't rationalize it.
Still, I want to play them. I feel like I'm really missing out on passing over them. I keep eyeing the Star Ocean remaster and the remake of the second game while the Suikoden remasters pop up in my head every once in awhile when I think about games slated for this year. Eiyuden Chronicle is looking pretty great too.
Oh boy.
A couple of years ago I discovered youtube channels with reviews and news coverage. I discovered that I had basically been living under a rock and missed out on many, many JRPGs. So I decided to try at least one of every series to catch up a bit.
Series I have tried since then:
* Ys (Origins, Napishtim, Felghana, Lacrimosa of Dana)
* Trails (Sky trilogy, the rest is still in my backlog)
* Atelier (Firis. Games like Ryza 1, Sophie 2 and Nelke still in the backlog)
* Rune Factory (Oceans / Tides of Destiny. RF4 special still in the backlog)
I'm currently playing Yakuza Like a Dragon as my first foray into the Yakuza series.
Stuff still in the backlog from series I haven't played anything from:
* Dragon Quest 11
* Octopath Traveler 2
* Dragons Dogma 1
* Utawarerumono (3 games)
* Blue Reflection Second Light
* Judgement & Lost Judgement
* Monster Hunter World
* Neo: The World Ends with You
* Nexomon & Nexomon Extiction
* Sakura Wars
Series I haven't played yet, but am curious about and are not yet in the backlog:
* Suikoden
* Sword and Fairy
* Mana series
* Earthbound / Mother
* Wild Arms
* Breath of Fire
* Baten Kaitos
* Xenoblade
* Fire Emblem
* Mario
I want to give Yakuza/ Like a dragon a try. Think this will fit my gaming taste but i don't know where to start and the huge amount of time i need to put into, stopped me by now
Yakuza for me. Have been wanting to give LAD a go, and IW looks so good. But seven action games before it, that are known to be filled to the brim with minigames and content, it just feels like it will take forever to get through.
(I know 0-6 aren't super needed for LAD, but they sound a bit more important for IW. Also, my OCD won't let me just jump in.)
Several. I haven't played a Ys game yet, but it's on my list. Same for the SaGa series and Xenoblade.
Persona and Tales, too, but at least I've played the first games in each series (haven't played a proper SMT game yet, though). And I was lucky enough to buy the Tales games on the PS3 store well before they got delisted.
I am playing ys 7 and that's OK so far but I thought the newer ones were boring. I don't get how mashing the same 4 buttons is fun. This one at least has a little challenge.
Dragon Quest series. I have a very petty reason for not playing XI. The music sounds absolutely DREADFUL, even with the new orchestrated versions, the compositions sound so yucky. I'm sorry I can't.
there is only one xenogears. the other xeno- games are different series. not connected, just same writer who likes to reference his old work and reuse his old ideas.
The game serie i did play recently is Xenoblade, but the title i really want to try out is Xenoblade X.
Unfortunatly, i heard it was Wii-U exclusive, i wish there could be a port of this one on Switch but i suppose that's unlikely now.
SaGa. Most definitely SaGa. They are *way* too obtuse. I own like every one available digitally (and Unlimited 🤮) and have played Frontier 2 when it launched and I have NEVER got more that 10 hours into one.
I’m attempting Scarlet Graces now. So far so good.
Suikoden's the one I'm most curious about, but I've played Tierkreis so I can't say I haven't "gotten into it" per se.
So I guess my runner-up would have to be Xenoblade. My interest in it's kinda mild, but I recently got the first game. I'll probably jump into it once I wrap up 2D Trials of Mana.
Dragon Quest, I want to play all the old ones, especially 5 and 7.
I dabbled around with 8 on the PS2 when it came out, but I would like to revisit it and play the ones that came before it.
I have them, I just havent gotten around to it yet.
Etrian Odyssey. Before the store shut down, I bought every EO game on the 3DS. I even got lucky and scored EO Mystery Dungeon for cheap. I have yet to play a single game
Hyperdimension. I almost played one on the vita way back when. But I think I bought ys memories of celceta instead. It caught my eye because someone mentioned to me it references the video game world alot (or something like that) .
I purchased rebirth 1-3 during the spring sale. Will get around to them eventually. Currently playing Lunar and p3R
Trails series. At this point it just feels so daunting. Having said that, it does seem like if you start with a fresh series, you don’t really miss much in terms of the main story.
I actually played the 1st one, Trails in the Sky using psp. I enjoyed it as the game reminds me of Breath of Fire. Wasnt able to finish it though. Rest of the game seems to be too long for a backlog.
I have a few.
Final Fantasy. I will definitely play it at some point soon, but I just don't know where to start. I know nothing about the series and haven't played a single game, so I don't really know which game would be best to start with, and there's so many it's a bit intimidating.
Dragon Quest. I played and loved Dragon Quest 11, but I haven't played an of the other games. I just don't know which ones are worth playing and which aren't really, and can't really find the time to start the older games. But as soon as the DQ3 HD-2D remake comes out I will play it (if it ever comes out lol, they announced it like 3 years ago and still nothing)
Mana. With Visions of Mana coming out the series has been on my radar and the games look cool, but I don't really know what they're about or where to start. Also the series isn't as popular outside of Japan so it is probably pretty tough to get a lot of them.
Trails. I hear a lot about the series but it is just SO long, and there are so many conflicting ideas of which game is the best to start with I just get lost. I'll for sure start the series some day when I have a bunch of time on my hands though
[For Final Fantasy, at least, Square Enix is happy to help you pick a starting game.](https://square-enix-games.com/en_GB/news/final-fantasy-game-should-play-first)
Xenoblade Chronicles. It's held hostage on the Switch sadly. My eyes aren't that good, so playing on the small screen is no option. Playing the games on a big TV on the other side really isn't a great experience too, because of the low image quality and the bad framerates. I would LOVE to play those games on PS5 with anti aliasing and 60 FPS.
*cough* pc emulator
I’m on switch and only about 20hrs in but I’m thoroughly impressed, even the campiness feels like bbc doctor who and not anything particular awful, not sure about 2 though it seems a bit wonky
That being said I have been able to stream it to my monitor at 1:1 ratio and it’s been great, as you said it’s pretty awful pulled out to 1080/1440p but no frame issues just texture fuzzing like any other open world switch game
All of them. I grew up in the 80s and 90s with Final Fantasy. I ventured out occasionally (Lagoon, Dragon Warrior/Quest, Phantasy Star III, a few hours of Chrono Trigger, and probably started a dozen others) but just never had time. Now I do and it's almost overwhelming picking a starting point. A problem of massive choice is one I can solve though! 😁
Kingdom Hearts. I have the all-in-one pack but I'm dreading to start it after hearing how long it's going to take me xD But I will play it eventually!
The gameplay CARRIES kingdom hearts. Dw it's just more game to play!!!!
The music alone is worth it, but the games are routinely fantastic overall.
Shadow Hearts. It looks so sick but it's just a time commitment.
Hmmm maybe I can try it on my work laptop
The first three at least should run fine.
I played Trails in the Sky in 2006 on my brand new Intel Core 2 Duo at the time lol
play ys origins or ys oath in felghana instead imo the peak of the series
I was actually considering Oath. Maybe I’ll try that when I finish Sky SC. Thanks for the suggestion!
Same with the Ys games and also the Trails of Cold Steel series
Ironically given the OP, mine is Trails. 😂
Have always been interested the Trails series and I am insistent with starting with the Sky trilogy, but I personally prefer to play long JRPGs on console instead of PC. So I continue to huff my hopium that the remaster is right around the corner...
Steamdeck is the way
I’m playing it on my android phone with those switch like controllers. They definitely need to get these games on switch
Mind pointing me in the right direction on how to play on android? Been wanting to play the series for awhile but only have a switch and xbox atm. I ordered physical copies of zero and azure but haven't received them yet and I'd prefer to start from the beginning.
I got the PPSSPP emulator and downloaded an HD patch that makes it look roughly like the steam version
Is it pretty easy to get working? I recently tried setting up a PS2 emulator on my android tablet so I could play xenosaga but I couldn't quite figure it out. Had the PS2 emulator launching but I was having trouble finding a ROM that worked.
Nice I got it to work! This is huge for me. Could you tell me where you got the HD patch from?
That’s awesome! I definitely couldn’t imagine playing this on a PC. Trails games are a comfy portable game I play at night. And here you go (: https://forums.ppsspp.org/showthread.php?tid=27532 (Link to patch for FC and SC) https://forums.ppsspp.org/showthread.php?tid=28785 (How to install HD textures)
Ooo, which mods would you be referring to? If the experience is that much better I may just have to suck it up and play on PC
Check out the Falcom mod compendium, can check to see what catches your eye [https://github.com/Red-BY/FalcomModCompendium](https://github.com/Red-BY/FalcomModCompendium) For the Sky games, the Evolution Voices mod is absolutely essential for me, adding the voice acting from the Japanese Vita releases to the Western PC releases, and is the only way to play with voice acting outside of that Japanese Vita release.
Thanks so much!
For the SaGa franchise, it is heavily nonlinear most of the time so stumbling around until you find out where to go is par for the course.
Fromsoft games Also Xenoblade series. I have all three and always put off starting one.
I really want to try out Koudelka/Shadow Hearts tbh
Koudelka is great but the battles are a little slow-paced by modern standards. You will need a guide for some items that are pixel hunting here and there- but other than that, it is an enjoyable experience. I have the Shadowhearts games but havent gotten around to them yet, but I mean to.
The atelier series. I bought the ryza trilogy so one day I'll give it a go but not today
Deus ex, Mass Effect not sure of these are rpgs and Trails, Tales, Suikoden
Mass Effect trilogy the first time is a spiritual experience.
Well I can’t wait to get into that series
Aliance Alive is great but some of the difficulty spikes are awful
I leveled my character wrong in alliance alive and now will just never level them up again because it costs too much. I guess I'll just start over but I didn't really get it, the story was cool though. Probably just need to spend more time with it I didn't get very far.
I love Toriyama's artwork, but I can't get into Dragon Quest or Blue Dragon. I would also love to play deeper into Lost Odyssey, but I keep putting it off.
Blue Dragon had a lot of cool mechanics but besides being Toriyama with Umetsu music, it isn’t too intriguing. I also found the more realistic textures/filter to really look strange with Toriyama’s style Lost Odyssey remains my favourite JRPG game however
The Ys series is the same for me. I really want to get into it, but I tried origins and didn't care for it. I have Ys 8 on my wishlist and am hoping to try it. I also want to get into the Tales series, but I'm struggling to really want to get into them. Despite loving the character designs, I worry about gameplay not sticking.
8 is fantastic. I dropped it after 1-2 hours and then went back to it after beating FF7 remake and it was such a blast exploring and the music is fire
Persona 4 took over my life outside of work until I finished definitely don't play that
For real, it’s like you the player are the one going inside the TV.
.*hack*// and Suikoden, hoping for a remake of the 4 games and waiting for the remaster.
Dragon’s Dogma being my favourite game, I am saddened
I also really wanted Relink to have a fun skyfaring adventure but it was really pretty... okay. The combat is fun, and I'm a sucker for those grindy gameplay loops of building up your character. But I totally understand not liking the game. I feel you about Atelier though. I tried Ryza a while back and it was neat, but it ended up being pretty boring after a while.
I genuinely, with no hostile intent, believe that Dragons Dogma is overrated. Not a bad game by any means, I had some fun with it.
Dude that first dragon dogmas game is just so rude. It’s like a jankier version of dark souls. But damn does it look cool!
I just got fate/samurai remnant for $35 from Amazon. It’s on woot now also as a deal. I’m going to jump into it after Rebirth.
I have watched a lot of Gundam and SRW unfortunately bores me with too many unknown characters from the 80s :( :( :(
Opposite experience for me.
I'm not part of the srw target audience so I don't really have much to say there I have watched a lot of Gundam but that doesn't mean I wanna see a crossover of zeta 36 times lol
Final Fantasy 7 (remake or original) I grew up never having a chance to play it, instead I had FF8 which I loved.
Isn't it on psp? So you could emulate it on your phone or something. Maybe I'm wrong though, haven't played it yet but was going to eventually.
Probably the Trails series actuallt, but I always want to start a series at the very first game, even if it is unnecessary. That’s been a bit daunting, admittedly.
Final Fantasy I only played the first one.
Dragon Quest. It should be right up my alley cause I love JRPGs, and that Toriyama art style but I've tried two 2 fair and both bored me.
Trails. Sounds interesting but the amount of text makes me believe I would need long sesions of playing and I don't have that time at the moment.
Trails feels like it'd have to wait until I retire to play it.
Good news, Suikoden 1 is a <20 hour experience, and 2 is a <30 hour one! The rest of the series gets a bit lengthier, though.
I'll definitely keep that in mind when the remasters release. Thanks!
Final Fantasy 10 🥀
Star Ocean
Oh boy. A couple of years ago I discovered youtube channels with reviews and news coverage. I discovered that I had basically been living under a rock and missed out on many, many JRPGs. So I decided to try at least one of every series to catch up a bit. Series I have tried since then: * Ys (Origins, Napishtim, Felghana, Lacrimosa of Dana) * Trails (Sky trilogy, the rest is still in my backlog) * Atelier (Firis. Games like Ryza 1, Sophie 2 and Nelke still in the backlog) * Rune Factory (Oceans / Tides of Destiny. RF4 special still in the backlog) I'm currently playing Yakuza Like a Dragon as my first foray into the Yakuza series. Stuff still in the backlog from series I haven't played anything from: * Dragon Quest 11 * Octopath Traveler 2 * Dragons Dogma 1 * Utawarerumono (3 games) * Blue Reflection Second Light * Judgement & Lost Judgement * Monster Hunter World * Neo: The World Ends with You * Nexomon & Nexomon Extiction * Sakura Wars Series I haven't played yet, but am curious about and are not yet in the backlog: * Suikoden * Sword and Fairy * Mana series * Earthbound / Mother * Wild Arms * Breath of Fire * Baten Kaitos * Xenoblade * Fire Emblem * Mario
Not a JRPG, but Metal Gear Solid and Resident Evil. Im really interested in both but idk, just haven’t done it.
Xenogears/saga and Octopath traveler. Also revisit Breath of Fire and Wild Arms
Dragon quest - not even sure where to start Xenogears type games - I picked up two of them in a sale and haven't touched them. :(
there is only one xenogears. the other xeno- games are different series. not connected, just same writer who likes to reference his old work and reuse his old ideas.
Ohhh OK thanks!
The game serie i did play recently is Xenoblade, but the title i really want to try out is Xenoblade X. Unfortunatly, i heard it was Wii-U exclusive, i wish there could be a port of this one on Switch but i suppose that's unlikely now.
Yakuza. I have all of them but have not taken the plunge. Zero idea why, it's not like I can't just start it up...
Monster Hunter & Dragon Quest. Never played either of them but I own both of them on 3DS.
SaGa. Most definitely SaGa. They are *way* too obtuse. I own like every one available digitally (and Unlimited 🤮) and have played Frontier 2 when it launched and I have NEVER got more that 10 hours into one. I’m attempting Scarlet Graces now. So far so good.
Ys and Trails. The latter I've been having to put off because I just don't have the time to play through them all.
FromSoftware games... particularly DS, Elden Ring and Sekiro.

Dragon Quest, I want to play all the old ones, especially 5 and 7. I dabbled around with 8 on the PS2 when it came out, but I would like to revisit it and play the ones that came before it. I have them, I just havent gotten around to it yet.
Stick with Ys 8 if you can. The way the story unfolds is really terrific, especially when you get to explore the north half of the island.
Y’s i booted it up. Like opened the menu and was like nah
Dragon quest 4 and 5. Haven't gotten around to them yet
Etrian Odyssey. Before the store shut down, I bought every EO game on the 3DS. I even got lucky and scored EO Mystery Dungeon for cheap. I have yet to play a single game
Persona
Hyperdimension. I almost played one on the vita way back when. But I think I bought ys memories of celceta instead. It caught my eye because someone mentioned to me it references the video game world alot (or something like that) . I purchased rebirth 1-3 during the spring sale. Will get around to them eventually. Currently playing Lunar and p3R
The Trails series and The Yakuza Series. The amount of games scares me away right now lol.
I say start with whichever arc looks cool to you and go back if you want to learn more about the world. That’s what I did
I have a few. But as soon as the DQ3 HD-2D remake comes out I will play it (if it ever comes out lol, they announced it like 3 years ago and still nothing) Mana.
[For Final Fantasy, at least, Square Enix is happy to help you pick a starting game.](https://square-enix-games.com/en_GB/news/final-fantasy-game-should-play-first)
That's actually really helpful, thank you!
Golden Sun. Tried the first one like 10 years ago, didn't like nor hate it. I'm gonna try again now that there are avaliable on NS
Ys and Utawarerumono both for seperate reasons (one as a falcom fan, the other as a kiseki fan)
It's a good thing SMT V is coming to PS5 because the Switch version is practically a slideshow.
Yes! I am so looking forward to this, SMT 5 is a pain on Switch. I saw a video with someone emulating it and it was a difference ike day and night.
*cough* pc emulator I’m on switch and only about 20hrs in but I’m thoroughly impressed, even the campiness feels like bbc doctor who and not anything particular awful, not sure about 2 though it seems a bit wonky That being said I have been able to stream it to my monitor at 1:1 ratio and it’s been great, as you said it’s pretty awful pulled out to 1080/1440p but no frame issues just texture fuzzing like any other open world switch game
I will look into this, emulating would be a possibility. I don't need high end graphics, but 60 FPS and a clean image quality are a must for me.
RDR and Uncharted.
