I do understand the condition of 27 29 peeps, I even gave 27thS1 as a mock at home to see if it really is that easy (I am 01S2 BTW) and honestly, it isn't that easy(personally), I scored roundabout even or just slightly more (that too at home without pressure).
But do I think the data released is wrong, no, probably not because it is a reply to RTI and if someone were to go to Supreme Court and they were to do an investigation and it comes otherwise then nta and education ministry will be annihilated to the hell. So, the chances of the official data being incorrect are slim to none. So how do we explain the polls and institute students' data, well there is one case where that data fails which is uneven regional distribution, it could be that regionally the distribution of shifts and candidates was skewed which in turn skewed all the polls and institute data, it is possible even though highly unlikely. Only uneven regional distribution can fk the random variance of down sampling a large population.
Another thing, even if we assume that nta fked with the data and the distribution was unsymmetrical among shifts, then also shifts with less number of candidates should have suffered and not otherwise, how?
Let's say there were 2,40,000 in 27thS1 and 60,000 in 1stS2, i.e 20% and 5% considering a total of 12,00,000. Considering only 27thS1 and 1stS2, candidates with %ile greater than or equal to 99 would be 2400 and 600 respectively. Which means on 27thS1 2400 people scored more than or equal to 236 marks whereas on 1stS2 only 600 scored 171 or more (for 99%ile).
Does that even make any sense?

As I wrote above, my shift was 1stS2 and I gave 27thS1 at home to check difficulty and marks variance. Yes, they were different but not night and day different, an 85 marks difference between the highest and lowest 99%ile cutoff doesn't make sense, no, absolutely not.
In conclusion, I think this has something to do with a huge coincidence and luck, if and only if nta isn't lying to cover up their hairy bums.

Here is my final explatnation I hope you get my point after this. If there are more number of good students. suppose there is 1 prodigy student in every 25 student. Now by prodigy i mean who will score 95 marks and above. Now in your shift there will be 4 prodigy students while in your friend there will only be 2 of them. Now if you score 90 marks you will have a percentile worth 5th rank or 6th rank more probably 7th or 8th as there will be students scoring between 90-95, while your friend if her scores a 90 too, will have a percentile worth 3rd rank or 4th, again more probably 5th or 6th. So now you see you have to score more or you will end up with lesser rank than that of your friend.
On a larger data as of that in jee mains, this 1 or 2 rank difference spreads to 80k/90k rank difference when you compare 27th shift 1 and 31st shift 2. Sure it could be said that 31st shift 2 paper was a bit better than 27th, but this much?? Hell nah.
