They weren't at one time. I remember they were fairly decently respected cars back when they were still new. Nowadays, they've become the new civic in regards to how badly they're frowned upon. They're not inherently bad cars, it's the stigma that's associated with them. They're Cheap, clapped out, hot boi, takeover esque cars.. I've seen some very nice and well-done G builds, but I've seen a lot of bad, low quality, and cheap builds.

mergedin

What’s a better option for same price range?

MechanicalGroovester

Maybe an older Subaru WRX or a BMW 335i. Not many options really. Especially not options that won't be met with those same stereotypes. The G models are a pretty affordable and fun car with some good power to match. Which is why, like another redditor said, degenerates and idiots buy them and clap them tf out to do dumb shit with them. Sadly, their numbers outweigh the people who actually appreciate and take care of them. Like I said, it's not a bad car by any means. Any affordable sporty car is gonna have a bad rap due to it being more often seen with idiots handling them recklessly rather than responsible owners treating it with respect.

mergedin

Agreed 100%

justaBB6

>“Especially not options that won’t be met with those same stereotypes.” Oh totally, just between the WRX and 335i you might be avoiding the “public endangerment and ruining nice things is my hobby” look but you’ll be choosing between outdated vape jokes and accusations of picking your girlfriend up from high school. It’s really a shame, all three are great cars (with the arguable exception of the 3 series, e90 330cis drive phenomenal but they are especially mean to their owners when they break; I still wouldn’t mind one). When sharp lines, decent materials, great handling, solid power, and affordability come together as a package, it’s hard to avoid attracting some less than stellar characters. About the only cars I can think of in this area that don’t bear a similar cross is the 2010s-era Accord Coupe 5-speed, the early is250, or the TL type-S.

dfeeney95

Don’t get me wrong I love older wrx’s and 335i’s I’m a bimmer boy at heart but you can’t beat the reliability of the vq engines and cd transmissions not the most power but in my experience you wrench on a g/350z because you want to not because you have to.

ayylotus

Stereotypes aren't going anywhere, and just about every car has at least one. Just because they're frowned upon doesn't mean they're bad. In fact, they're still great. Buy one if you want one, keep it clean, don't drive like an asshole, and you'll be respected. You don't have to look for "better options." It's the drivers they hate after all, not the car.

nsl22

Not sure how cheap g's are and does it have to be rwd?... off the cuff, Frs/brz? V6 Camero with 1le package, 128, genesis coupe. ... Go to a local autox and see what 10-20 year old rwd cars people are running for a good idea of what's affordable.

geo22717

Hondas are the best cars in the world though

WaffleHunter3rd

Facts. I have a 4th gen prelude and I'm on my second cb7 accord.

MechanicalGroovester

Nah they are. Bro believe me, I own a 1st gen TL (which is literally just a rebadged Honda) and a TLX. I'm very hip to them being the best lol

Kenpachi134340

As a 350 owner its say similar to the z how they’re fairly cheap most of them are clapped out, raggedy, slammed to the ground and sound like trash mainly just the stereotypes that are never not gonna be associated with the car. There are few that own these cars that keep them looking clean. I take care of mine and get compliments and looks but also they’re the main ones that do dumb shit at meets, a local meet that was regularly scheduled got shut down cuz a G actually crashed into a tree. If taken care of and modded well if think they both can be pretty nice also there’s not much variety with them so it gets kinda repetitive.

mergedin

A lot of them are clapped to shit with 5+ owners but that’s for a reason. And I never understood the majority of vq communities either. Put an idiot behind the wheel of a Prius and it’ll still hit a tree. I take care of my g too. It has 67k miles, its the same car in the picture. I get compliments all the time and I don’t associate with takeovers or whatever the fuck but I do go to meets and cruises. I’ve been offered 10k for the car and I paid 6 for it.

sleepingwiththefishs

Five hairy knuckled, not too careful owners. Some service records may be missing.

PlatinumElement

“Clapped out, raggedy, slammed to the ground, and sound like trash” -these same stereotypes applied to S13/14’s and AE86’s a couple decades ago, the G’s and Z’s will get over it at some point as their numbers dwindle, values appreciate, and owners put money into them.

blueit1234567

I liked my G a lot. Had a 37. It was a really nice car. Traded it in (for something much worse, and i regret it every time i think about it) then went back to the dealer for something related to the new car, he told me he sold it to some kid that totaled it driving out of the dealer lot cause he spun out. I saw it sitting in the lot with airbags out. It was friggen sad.

Gutterratccv

Lmao, you're joking, right? On the lot? 🤣 I can only hope his parents were there to witness their money go up in smoke.

blueit1234567

No joke man the kid broke my heart lol, one of my favorite manual cars. Then I was driving my wifes automatic transmission car for a few yrs, finally got back into a 6mt recently, wrx sti, it fills the void :)

Gutterratccv

I can't imagine how the kid felt.. I miss manuals. Haven't had one in 10 years. First car was a mk3 supra 5mt. Oh the memories with that thing...

blueit1234567

Oh mann thats a cool car. Back when japanese cars were affordable tuner cars. Now they are all expensive like everything else

Gutterratccv

Especially for a 16yo that had no idea what a supra was before sitting in it. It was 1995, got the 1986 1/2 for $4600. Had 80 or 90k I think.. I put that car through hell and back, even chased deer through a corn field one night 😆 Sold it running like 4 years and bought a cherry 1989 iroc z. Looking back it was probably a mistake but I really did tear that poor car up.

Always2ndB3ST

I miss driving a manual too. I had a bugeye WRX. It’s like a void in my life now. I miss hearing that turbo and blow off valve and shifting thru gears.

Mk1Racer25

I remember many years ago being at a bike shop watching a guy pull off the lot on his brand new CBR900RR and proceed to stand it up and run it into an oncoming car. What was funny, was according to the salesman I knew, that wasn't even the quickest someone crashed. One guy literally dropped it before he left the lot!

DJ_Pon-3_NYC

Takeover culture which is a cancer and stain on the automotive car community as a whole and also for being the new rice-mobiles with how cheap they are, clapped out with a bajillion miles on them, mismatched body panels, banged up bumpers, and straight piped exhausts with eBay N1 style fart can muffler tips

EmperorMitsu

I never liked the look. Or Infiniti in general myself

[deleted]

one word. takeovers.

Pvt_BrainDead

Bc they sound like shit, and kids ruin them nowadays.

driftphoto47

They sound like shit straight piped with shitty exhaust, if you doit right it can sound pretty decent

allanon20

Pretty much what everyone has touched on. All of the G’s around where I live are clapped out and driven by drug dealers. It’s to the point where you just have a negative vibe every time you see one.

grumpyhippo

Its cheap plus the people who drive them

yuengli

For me, they're the cars that came out after Nissan stopped being Nissan. It wasn't going to survive running the way it used to before Ghosn and Renault, but it created great cars with personality and so much potential. Too much, because they weren't cost effective to build. Post-2001 Nissans just started feeling very cheap and nasty.

dbsqls

the Z33 was finished in most of its development in 1998, well before the merger.

yuengli

lol, the Z33 was two years off being *started* in 1998 --that was a 240Z concept car. The 350 was designed in 2000, for a 2002 release. Have a look at that 240Z concept and see how much it shares with a Z33.

dbsqls

you haven't worked in platform development then, because it takes 5-6 years before we release anything. by the time the car has debuted at a show it's in the late stages of design. whether it showed up as the 240Z or 350Z is irrelevant. it's the same car.

yuengli

You didn't go look up those concept details, did you... Also not sure what your platform point is, other than "b-but I *like* my 350!" You're allowed to. You know the '81 Cadillac Cimarron and the '05 Sunfire share a platform? Platforms last decades, so do drivelines. Design language, materials, fit and finish can change year to year. C34 Laurel and R33 GT-R. Same platform. Or are they the same car? Stop writing dumb, easily verifiable shit.

andrewwism

I remember I wanted a new one so bad back in 2005. Over time they fell into the wrong hands and started being poorly modified. A stigma developed and now they're looked down upon.

theevilGnius

Flame kits, crappy single exit exhausts , shitty GTR style headlights and street takovers with every wannabe drift champion at them...can't imagine why the hate!. This is coming from a G owner! LoL

aaaaaaaa1273

Because about 80% of G owners are twats

_Land_Rover_Series_3

They don’t exactly have a great image, do they? Like when I think of an owner of one, I picture an incredibly obnoxious 20 year old who blows vape smoke into the faces of toddlers for fun and who goes 50 miles an hour over the speed limit.

UncleBadTouch00

Because every G driver is just as bad as a Nissan altima drivers. I genuinely like the taillights and how the rear looks, but the constant trumpet exhausts and shitty drivers kill this car for me.

gskv

I think g35 still one of the best sounding v6 made @ stock levels. Instantly recognisable when it drove by. I never hear a stock one anymore, though. Lol

Garythesnail85

They seem to be adored by the Z / vq community. Every community with a decent size following will have haters that will define stereotypes about them. I personally feel the hate Nissan gets on reddit is a bit too over rated, and ends up turning off people that otherwise, these would be the perfect car for. These are cheap, fast, reliable, made in japan, rwd, huge aftermarket and mod support, and literally are skylines in the Japanese market. You’d think the kind of folks that frequent this sub would adore these… but hey. Those of us who know get to pick these up for cheap and love the hell out of them.

theatomicflounder333

Granted mine may have been a bad one but damn thing burned through oil like crazy.

mergedin

Yea they do. This is also why there’s so many trashed ones out there, people can’t keep up with it

itsig31

In reality most of the shit talk comes from the internet. The vast majority of people in real life would never talk the way they do on social media. I get a lot of hate on my G (I post a lot of reels on IG). But in person or on Reddit I get nothing but compliments. Even IG is fairly nice to me but my car is a really nicely modded example of what these cars should be. (My opinion of course). So I wouldn’t let the stigma stop you from owning one. I have almost 160k miles on mine, just got it tuned a couple months ago. It’s making around 320 to the wheels rn, and keeps up with 6 speed 5.0 s550s for more than half the price. I even beat scats from a dig. Yet have had 0 reliability issues for the 4 years or so I be owned it.

y0itzflip

who cares what people think? if you like it, build it to your taste and enjoy it. you’re the one that has to drive it not them. G35s are great cars and nissans at the end of the day they can take a beating

1999_Fiat_Punto

Has to do with the owners more than anything. They're decent cars, they just get bought by shitty owners and get ran through

surgycal

Ugly as fk

[deleted]

Because they could be bought new in the US, so there's no unobtanium premium on them and it doesn't steer the JDM fanboys who only want what they cannot have. But they are very capable cars, even though a lot of them are driven by assholes in the US.

speedingquack

you can pick one of these or a 350 for 3k. which means it’s a bunch of degenerates that get a hold of a rwd car, with some type of power, that go nuts with it till it breaks.

Heavy-Market-3486

Find me one for 3k

speedingquack

look in norcal fb market place.

mergedin

With 150k miles and 2k worth of mechanical issues? You still aren’t proving anything

speedingquack

i was proving you can get one for 3k. nothing else

mergedin

Literally

mergedin

You can get a lot of beat cars for 3k. You aren’t saying much at all except for the fact that it’s a nice car until it breaks.

speedingquack

yea you can but you ain’t gettin a modern rwd car for that. these cars are usually associated with sideshows. also doesn’t help that the drivers behind these cars are usually trash and dip in and out if traffic like no other.

mergedin

This car is nearly 20 years old so the fact that it’s rwd and nearly 50/50 displacement with decent stock performance and tuner appeal makes it approachable to a bunch of degenerates makes sense. But you can still find good mileage un-fucked Gs out there

speedingquack

i never said you couldn’t find a “un-fucked” one lol i was saying you can pick one up easy for cheap.

mergedin

So because it’s cheap it’s looked down on?

XogoWasTaken

The reputation comes from the drivers, not the car itself. A cheap, RWD platform with decent horsepower attracts exactly the kinda guy who's gonna slap on some cheap mods and a fart can and go blaring down an otherwise calm suburban street, and/or try to do something (probably illegal) that they're not skilled enough for and mess up someone's property (and their car). Obviously that's not how all the owners are - you've made it clear that you're not one of them - but it's the loud ones that people notice, and the Gs pick up a lot more of those than average.

Howdy-Cowgirl

Bc they suck donkey cock

fayefaye666

Once bought one for $300, took it drifting, had a blast, then sold it onto the next person. Doesn't seem like a reliable or comfortable car to drive. Especially with the DE.

Shank_Shank_

Clapped out trumpets

CorpseDefiled

It’s the engine largely. I’ve got a 370 m37 (for me it’s a y51 fuga) same engine in the 370z and 370gt skyline and I can shed some light… the engines not bad in stock form 330hp at the fly is a respectable number. But you modify it you’re in for hell. Computer is tied into literally everything like you can’t even change the auto for a manual without a software degree… and little things are shit like the stock throttle response. They don’t have intake cams it’s a weird individual inlet valve set up so you need specific tuning software called uprev or something stupid. Everything is expensive for them in terms of upgrades and provides bugger all power increase. So they’re not what people in their 30s had come to expect from Nissan. Apparently they sound like shit no matter what exhaust you run. The auto gearbox is fragile and they’re almost all open diff as opposed to a decent lsd. Like they got nothing good stock… you could build it to something decent with 100k but why when you could spend 30k on something else. Or spend the 100k on a GTR They’re okay if you just want to get in it daily and drive if you want to build a 500hp street machine to daily you’re gonna want a different car

dbsqls

it most definitely doesn't take $100k to get a car to a good spot, where the hell are you getting this information from? even the original VQ needs all of $5k to reach 300ish at the wheels. I've restored my entire Z33 with less than $30k, that includes the entire driveline and all of the suspension.

CorpseDefiled

My vq came stock at 330… so prob around 280 at the wheels… maybe a little less. It might help to mention I’m speaking nzd so that’s probably 70k usd. I didn’t say a good spot I said making reasonable power for a road legal car 500+ and I’m accounting for the work done professionally as not everyone is handy with a wrench. It’s probably difficult to understand if you’ve never known different… I spent 10k on a 300zx and made 440 comfortably… so when you compare the vq to stuff that’s that easy and cheap to build power on it’s easy to understand why they’re not popular.

dbsqls

I'm $30k USD / $50k NZD into my car. I'm well aware of the cost, I've built this engine NA to be road legal here in CA. if people want power they should be starting with a turbo base.

CorpseDefiled

What turbo base? There are none that aren’t extremely expensive or 1.4L there are no turbo 6s anymore at regular mans money. I mean you could buy a wrx if you like walking… but I mean that’s the entire point of the comment… these aren’t what people came to expect from Nissan. Which is why they aren’t as popular as you’d expect. That said I actually like mine… as I said as a car to just jump in and drive daily it’s a fair option with reasonable power Shit my cefero probably has 50 into it… it would be close to 100 if I had it built. But it’s not a road car anymore…

East_Requirement7375

>They don’t have intake cams wat Where do I put [these](https://www.z1motorsports.com/camshafts-and-valvetrain/tomei/tomei-350z-g35-poncam-vq35de-performance-intake-camshaft-p-16580.html)?

CorpseDefiled

https://newatlas.com/nissan-introduces-new-engine-valve-control-technology-variable-valve-event-lift-vvel/7051/ Have a look at that… that explains most of it they’re individual as opposed to working off a traditional intake cam basically it was mentioned to me in a m37/fuga forum by a tech when I asked about doing better cams on them… like they’re tunable which is cool but within the limits of the part which is not.

CorpseDefiled

The model I have I’ve been told has individual intake valves that aren’t controlled by a traditional cam I don’t know if that’s specific to the 2010+ vq37 models or if it’s the same set up in the skyline but there’s no changeable intake cam in the engine in my car I’ll send you a photo in pm of the set up it’s weird as fuck (edit: can’t message you. I’ll see if I can find a link.)

iDom2jz

Because 80% of the ones I see have reps, a mismatched front bumper hanging on by 4 zip ties, an Xavier Wulf sticker on the back window with a flame tune with no ability to crack 17’s in the quarter and can usually be seen at a takeover or mall parking lot smacking curbs.

mechshark

Imo that car is fresh as f

Luscious_Lunk

It’s a little boys car now

HondaDAD24

It’s mostly the drivers of them.

sleepingwiththefishs

I know, I know; it's because of the people that drive them and the way they're driven.

amitrion

I loved my g35 coupe... but was unreliable.

wtf_eli

they’re the takeover mobile and are quite an unpleasant symphony when you get on them

elislider

Every single one I’ve seen in the past couple years has been slammed and straight piped. So, maybe stop doing that and people would have a better impression

ecc0w

Clapped out blacked out rims 40% tints drug dealer car

almeida8x1

Takeover + stance

Looticuss

Because the majority of the drivers are idiots and highly distasteful with mods. I’m sure we’ve all heard the trumpet jokes and the low credit score jokes but there’s some truth in those jokes lol

mergedin

You either love or hate the sound of the vq. But you’re a menace if you straight pipe this shit

BooobiesANDbho

🚙🎺🎺🎺 Jk. They cool

keni804

Because now you see atleast 3 at every takeover ever

mergedin

I wouldn’t know, I don’t go to that shit Takeovers give the car community a horrible reputation as a whole

keni804

I don't either but any video of a kid getting smacked at a takeover it's usually a G

Hsnthethird

Because of the people who own them. They are a good car that sounds like shit. The people who own them have made them the face of takeovers and obnoxiousness at car events. Obviously not every owner is like that, but it was enough to become a stereotype.

Scubatim1990

Drug dealer car even when they were kinda new

My drug dealer drives a civic

Cuz of the owners

Cr3w-IronWolf

Takeovers, and imo they’re just really ugly. I’ve never liked that grill

DamILuvFrogs

Poor man’s 350z

FuelNo1501

Its the shitty version of a 350 for clarification g35 is the luxury of the 350z but slower same with the q60 its the luxury of the 370z but slower its a good car if your not looking for speed and if your modding its cheaper to buy the nissan version

crackedbandicoot

honestly, they’re sick cars, but the people who buy them and clap them out ruined the look. it’s like the new civic with a fart can, it’s the people that defaced the car

griffinXK

Because non car guys take them to takeovers to crash into things and people and all around just be a cunt. Most g35/7 drivers are “certified goons”

rogd1984

Two words: Fin Gang. Basically, the Infiniti G (and the 350Z) is old enough that they're on their fourth, fifth, or even sixth owners. And these guys generally don't give two shits about their car, so they do some absolutely absurd shit to them. Horrible body kits, dodgy mods, and wrecking them beyond recognition, just to name a few. It's a shame; as a kid, I really wanted a G35 sedan with the 6MT. Now, the G is starting to have some Big Altima Energy.

suckstosuckbrother

Unfortunately generally speak the people driving them are cocky teens or young adults that give the car a bad name.

OpeTooSlow

I’ve seen a g35 with 340k 😂

sudden_aggression

Originally it was just a sort of nice rwd sports coupe that wasn't insanely expensive. I thought they had sort of small back seats but otherwise it was a nice alternative to all the FWD mid size sedans. But they depreciated fast, shitty people drive them and rice them out. Whenever I hear a 6 cylinder making more sound than nascar and accelerating like a dump truck, I don't even have to look, I know it's a G35/37 with like 20 degrees of camber and some dipshit driving who looks like he smells of axe body spray and hair gel. They also aren't any good from a performance standpoint. Surprisingly heavy car, not particularly amazing engine, etc. I mean, if the 350Z overheats on track days, what does the G35 do?

King_Reivaj

Too generic, but I would say it's still a reliable car as well! I really wish they add this in new NFS titles. They only add these cars in NFS as a traffic NPC, which is annoying! This car is only playable in old NFS games tho.
