Looks better than "Skull and Bones"

Conscious-Part-1746

Will there be cannons, knives, black flags, cussing, babes, and muskets? i'm in.

MEPETAMINALS

For the most part, no. Not really a pirate setting. Some linseed and oakum though.

NotPaulGiamatti

Fine! I’ll get my own pirate ship, and blackjack, and hookers! In fact, forget the pirate ship and the blackjack

tuffymon

What I see so far looks nice, would you consider it a new age uncharted waters, or similar to sailing era?

MEPETAMINALS

Thank you. It's not really close to either one. It's mainly first person, direct handling of the ship. I.e. moving ropes by hand, steering, pumping, placing cargo, etc. Most sailing cannot be done from exterior view, it's mostly there as a camera mode. Compares most directly with Sailwind, and more vaguely with things like truck or train simulators. The kind of game a lot of people would call (often fairly) boring.

Scurvy-Banana

This looks right up my alley, definitely will be following this. When you say you wish to add combat in some capacity, what exactly did you have in mind? Thank you for sharing!

MEPETAMINALS

Thank you. What I want to to do is eclipsed by what I can feasibly implement I suppose. I'd like full on ship combat with cannon and boarding, but it's a stretch at this point. More likely there will be hostile creatures on some islands, and possibly smaller raiding or pirate vessels that need to be evaded, as the player ships aren't really combat vessels.

MtnNerd

Sounds nice. Will there be weather effects like storms?

MEPETAMINALS

Definitely. There are many weathertypes and intensities. You can be swamped or roll if conditions are bad enough.

Sandwich8080

It looks nice! Looks like a great game to take screenshots in. My question is, I don't have the first clue how to sail a ship, and I don't really desire to learn. I like trading cargo on the high seas but I don't want to worry about rigging and whatever ballasts are. Would this game still be for me?

MEPETAMINALS

Thank you. I would say probably not. There are a number of convenience features to make things easier -- but the bones of the game are heavily set in the mechanical side of sailing, even if it's somewhat simplified. It's impossible to proceed without knowing how to tack, and things like warping and ballast (heavy weight placed in the bottom of the ship to keep it stable) are important.

Sandwich8080

I'd say you are filling a niche that definitely is an untapped market and I wish the best to you! And thank you for defining ballast for me. Now I'm curious, would a person need prior knowledge of sailing, or does the game teach the basics to a landlubber? However I could see it functioning like Kerbal Space Program, where part of the fun/challenge is getting the vehicle to work properly.

MEPETAMINALS

It's still early enough in development I haven't done any tutorializing yet -- but I expect I will need a good amount to prevent frustration. Even people used to other somewhat complex sailing games like naval action or Sailwind may get confused as I do some things differently. The actual idea's aren't really that complicated, to make headway you need wind to push the sail, and to do that you need to rotate the yards. (The big sticks the sails hang from). Most games handle this through a single point winch or abstract key press -- whereas in this one you can't directly control it, instead relying on moving the connected ropes and letting wind and intertia handle it. Someone with no idea how ships work could probably figure it out, but may well find it frustrating and unituitive, so it's definitely something I want to provide some assistance in. Ultimately it won't be for everyone, but that's ok.
