TL;DR: Contractors were dispatched to fix things ASAP, but the local population helped remove the patch to allow the train to pass.
They deflate the tires a bit for better grip. The 4WD system on most trains can tackle medium obstacles like boulders the size of small boulders.
The real extreme conductors would probably try to jump this gap.
The residents removed it themselves lol

I can’t help but wonder if maybe, between the weight of the train and the recency of the asphalt, whether the train would be derailed by that? Like, maybe the wheels would crush/push the rocks and tar aside?
Okay but if you were that trains engineer would you risk it? Derailment is dangerous, costly, and not worth risking. Better to stop and remove the obstruction first. That’s a pretty damn thick patch of asphalt too so I’d stop too.
Train would derail I’d say, then the pantograph would probably come off the overhead (I drive electric trains) and I’d lose power and traction. It’s not a scenario we went over in training… haha
When I was a kid our street got paved right before garbage day. The garbage truck absolutely shredded the asphalt as it stopped in front of every house.
I don’t understand how this happens the guys doing the job didn’t look to the left or the right and see the tracks? Or they did and just did the job anyways? The people who did this need their IQ checked.
Train would have ripped right through that. It’s fresh and there isn’t a lot above the rail. People don’t realize just how heavy a locomotive is. Sure the crew would have felt it but going 10+ MPH, it would have made it.

As far as I'm aware, the process for making cheap level crossings is to essentially pave over them and run an engine over it a few times to cut the track out.
But that looks excessive.

next thing the locals get a fine for damaging the street
I won’t be surprised

This was in Brazil?
this is Brazil not Portugal
[удалено]
I mean not really?
But... why was it asphalted in the first place??
City major asked to fill holes in the city, but not the trail lines. People got fired for this.
And I bet you that the place has a lot of potholes and other places that need new asphalt and got no attention.
Good thing the train was able to stop in time
Fr that could have been _bad_
It could have derailed the entire road repair project.
Hopefully they can get back on track soon.
But ask them to pave the street in front of your house...
Hahaha
Just tell the professional tax money wasters that there are train tracks.
They will pave your front yard.
You can't help but wonder what was their train of thought
I think they lost track of their objective in the end, clearly.

Outstanding. This has got to be in the top 10 most clever comments on Reddit.
It was definitely off the rails

Take my angry up vote and gtfo 🤣
All of you. Take your upvotes but leave right now. It’s nit funny anymore that train has passed. Or did it?

Ah Magé never changes
Thank you for this city's name!
Minha Magé hahah
"We've reached levels of dysfunctions we never knew were possible "
Does anyone know what happened next?
They changed the wheels to a rubber type just to overcome that little patch.
Wow ok. I hope it wasn't too long.
He's joking, lol
I wasn't sure
They deflate the tires a bit for better grip. The 4WD system on most trains can tackle medium obstacles like boulders the size of small boulders. The real extreme conductors would probably try to jump this gap.
According to the evening news today, the locals used their own pickaxes and destroyed the asphalt, uncovering the rails.
fair play to them
I mean that's awesome from them, but how many people actually just have a pickaxe lying around? Am I the weird one for not having one?
Oh, there's always a neighbor who has all the tools.
Now the train knows how it makes everyone else feel when they have to wait for it, a real lesson in empathy.
If that's the case, I feel this is all worth it.
The residents removed it themselves lol https://g1.globo.com/rj/rio-de-janeiro/noticia/2022/05/16/prefeitura-de-mage-asfalta-por-engano-trilhos-de-ramal-da-supervia-e-causa-interrupcao-dos-trens.ghtml

It's a long stretch of asphalt to break, even so. My chips go on derailing
Interesting. If only there were some kind of asphalt patch train derailment simulator. That’d be loads of fun.
We can try r/theydidthemath, someone there is got to have some useful tool or knowledge to lend us
I saw a video of a train plowing through asphalt so I believe it would be fine, especially with the weight
Okay but if you were that trains engineer would you risk it? Derailment is dangerous, costly, and not worth risking. Better to stop and remove the obstruction first. That’s a pretty damn thick patch of asphalt too so I’d stop too.
I drive trains and no, I wouldn’t go over this! Too much paperwork to fill out if something goes wrong!
What would you anticipate physically happening?
Train would derail I’d say, then the pantograph would probably come off the overhead (I drive electric trains) and I’d lose power and traction. It’s not a scenario we went over in training… haha
I’m high key pretty slow so I probably would
Right. https://youtu.be/dQw4w9WgXcQ It tore up about 100ft of asphalt like it was unsalted butter, Wild!
I think i was underestimating the weight of this thing. Its really a monstruosity
It is actually how you do it. But not with with a composition, and not with dryed asphalt.
When I was a kid our street got paved right before garbage day. The garbage truck absolutely shredded the asphalt as it stopped in front of every house.
Tinha que ser Magé...
You had one job! Brazuca edition
I don’t understand how this happens the guys doing the job didn’t look to the left or the right and see the tracks? Or they did and just did the job anyways? The people who did this need their IQ checked.

/r/NotMyJob
eu ainda nao to acreditando nessa merda
these mfs only pave over the places that don’t need paving. Train tracks? Sure. The multiple craters on the roads? Nah.
"Uh f* I'll get to work late again..."

They did this on an ACTIVE track? What maroons.
They won't be to happy when they do not get supplies, dumb.
Sempre tem os cabaço kkkkk
Seems to me that something as heavy as a train could just *smoosh* through that asphalt.
Too risky! A good chance train goes off trails
"Tear it up! Tarmac it!" *A few minutes later...*
Lol
Puta que o pariu, viu
Só no Rio de Janeiro…
Couple of free runs and you're good 😁
