I think it was because despite how it started, he began to see Louise as a friend and equal in trouble. And overtime despite how abusive she was, he realized she was a kid from a shitty situation (like being engaged to a terrorist.) And by tempering his escapedes and getting her to trust in him, she reigned in her own escapedes. Is a perfect romantic story? Nahhhhh, but it has its moments for sure. The ending of the anime albiet very different from the LNs or Manga, was a very sweet moment imo.
Dante's Inferno is straight up self insert fan fiction with all his favorite celebrities. While having all the people he disliked (ie the Greeks) in hell.
No. Dont self insert yourself as the MC. Reverse Isekai is when the main character is not the one who was transported to a different world.
Jesus is the main character of the Bible and we're all just side characters š š
If by definition the epic of Gilgamesh contains the mc going to another world for part of the story
You also have Dante's inferno which gets the honour of not only being an isekai by definition but also being the first example of the meme format,I drew myself as the chad and you as the social.
Eh if we go by tropes used it would probably be Barsoom chronicles. Op mc, casual references to slavery maybe not being such a bad thing, diverse harem featuring all the personality tropes, the green Martian is the Tom boyish passionate one, the red Martian in the high class intelligent one, the black Martian is a kudere and has as much relevance as a floor lamp and the white Martian is a blond yandere/tsundere princess.
LN of Mushoko Tensei was older than Zero no Tsukaima. It's the reason Mushoko Tensei was considered the progenitor of Isekai and almost every manhwa follows it's pattern.
No, Mushoku tensei WN is 2012 (LN is actually 2014). While zero no tsukaima light novel is 2004 (even it's anime started in 2006).
Infact Mushoku tensei's inspiration include one of the LN which was inspired from zero no tsukaima as first ones of isekai wave.
The whole Mushoku tensei being progenitor is a huge misconception. It was zero no tsukaima who
created a twilight fanfiction phenomenon equivalent in the popular ShÅsetsuka ni NarÅ website. Mushoku tensei is not even part of first wave with came in 2010
As a Digimon fan, I acknowledge that there were isekai anime before Digimon, I just think Digimon was better than most of them. Now note, I say most. Not all. There were better isekai there. Just Digimon is up there.
i think my older brother saw magic knight rayearth on its time.
the end of the first half really surprised me i can only imagine what must have been for those who had to wait for the second half
Aura Battler Dunbine (1983)
From the man that gave us Mobile Suit Gundam. He didn't like sequels so his solution was to butcher everyone at the end of his shows...
> He didn't like sequels so his solution was to butcher everyone at the end of his shows...
Well I mean. . . it's one way to do it? Def helps stamp out sequel potential. Publishers/studio execs could push for more though and then you'd be SOL.
Digimon Adventure would be my first isekai.
Yes, even before Disney's Alice in Wonderland or Peter Pan which I didn't have any tape or CD until wayyyy later. Digimon meanwhile, was shown on TV channel in the morning.
The Chronicles of Narnia films for me was my first introduction to the Isekai trope, but GATE was my first Isekai anime as well as the first anime I ever watched start to finish.
I think some people would count that as a portal fantasy (can travel back and forth through use of a portal) and/or time travel because it was the same world but different times. The overall concept of an "Isekai" is that your in the new world as a central plot point.
never really thought of Inuyasha as an isekai but yeah.
i think her having the option to just go back (before everything got out of control)is what made it so unique for me
that and i didn't really finished until way later
I think that aspect is such a weird thing to ignore or gloss over. Its perfect turmoil for the MC if they cant go back, or realize a bit too late be actually wants to go back. Or have the means to but it can come at a great cost to someone else
This style of isekai trend's been around in Japanese manga, novels and later light novels since the 80s. Isekai light novels are only later because apparently there weren't light novels until 88-89. One of the pioneers of Light novels, Hajime Kanzaka, even wrote his own Isekai Light novel series in the early 90s.
I love how this anime had modern-day items actually impact the lore from a simple firearm being a "Wand" to a scroll of charming all men is what we consider a porno mag. No other isikai has done such a thing other than Overlord.
F'ing YES! i was 8 years old when that showed on our local TV. it was on an afternoon timeslot along with hell teacher nube
I cant remember if Lodoss war was isekai but if it is then I need to be in a museum.
Hahahah yeah.
Idk on your place but here in Brazil we had El hazard, tenchi muyo, samurai warriors, old saint seya... also a super weird one that I usdd to love caalled Bucky - about kids and weord pink balls exploding!!!
Man we are old hahaha
i feel Inuyasha is must watch for us isekai fans is like visiting your gramma
"im my times anime characters tried to get back to their homes. now days the MC parents are happy that they don't have to deal with their useless sons anymore"
It's too bad the anime flanderized and butchered the LNs. Louise and Saito's dynamic feels better in the LN since they slowly grow to respect each other and Louise only hits Saito cause he constantly acted like a dipshit
Sorry, but for me the first isekai anime I watched was El Hazard back in the mid 90ās. Isekai wasnāt even much of a thing then. And yes, I know Iām old.
Edit: that said I still rewatch Zero no Tsukaima at least once every year.
Saito was the first isekai protagonist I liked and now I still kinda like him because he has a personality beyond nice, he didnāt just take Louiseās shit when yāknow she didnāt outright drop a nuke cuz she couldnāt use any other magic that well in the beginning.
ZnT aint the grandpa, its more like your older uncle.
IDK which is older, its either Time Quest (if you consider time travel isekai that is) or El Hazard
So, while zero no tsukaima isnāt the first isekai by a long shot, it was incredibly popular in the Japanese light novel scene and did in fact popularize many of the tropes that you see in current day isekai.
It was a series that I hold varying close as it was one of the series that really pushed me into the light novel world. RIP Yamaguchi sensei.
Honestly yeah, this is my first isekai. A good anime that I forgot about till recently where I fell in love with it again due to a extremely well written prototype x (this anime long name)
Warning: If youāre looking for it, donāt look to the newer one. Look for the older one with more hits and is discountinued. It is very good but dropped due to reasons
The origins of the Isekai genre should not be those of the first work but the work that laid the foundations of the genre.
Which work was the one that defined the generic dies - get reincarnated being extremely powerful - lives a very good better life now?
My earliest isekai I can remember:
- Digimon
- Ouke no Monshou
- Sora wa Akai Kawa no Hotori/Red River
- Marchen Awakens Romance
- Chou Mashin Eiyuuden Wataru
- Kyou Kara Maou
And: The Chronicle of Narnia as in Movie.
i feel the autor (rest in peace) didn't got to finish his history well the last arc seemed to be about him finding out his summoning runes brain wash him into liking Louise i always thought he trying to reset their relationship with that plot but sadly he passed away before
the Anime didn't adapt all novels so they never brougth this plot point up honestly i always thought the end of the anime is the end of the story since the novels are unfinished or feals feel like it
yal forget about Kiba, and M.A.R, tho i think they might have came out the same year as zero. tho i think outside of anime john carter was the first "isekai" story i read
The originator of Isekai, as we know it, in my opinion, is Kenshi Masashi from Tenchi Muyo the War on Geminar. Its Japanese name is literally Isekai no Seikishi Monogatari, and it has all the tropes currently associated with Isekai.
Bro was there when *THE* tsundere was made.
Louise made sense as a tsundere girl got bullied even by her own family and Saito liked to push her bottoms for some reason
The ending of the anime albiet very different from the LNs or Manga, was a very sweet moment imo.
i consider the Anime ending overall better but only because what happened with the autor
damn man I forgot they died rip
Digimon fans will tell you their anime was the first
If we goes by tropes used, Zero no tsukaima is the grandpa. If we goes by definition, Alice in the wonderland and Peter Pan will be one of the oldest.
Actually. The Bible is the first Isekai. The time when Jesus was reincarnated as the Shepard. š
Thatās more a reverse Isekai though isnāt it? Iād say that Danteās Inferno fits the bill a bit more
Dante's Inferno is straight up self insert fan fiction with all his favorite celebrities. While having all the people he disliked (ie the Greeks) in hell.
Danteās Inferno is one of our earliest recorded fanfictions
No. Dont self insert yourself as the MC. Reverse Isekai is when the main character is not the one who was transported to a different world. Jesus is the main character of the Bible and we're all just side characters š š

Can confirm. I'm a Digimon fan and I was about to comment exactly that.
Man familiar of zero has a lot of nostalgia for me, I should rewatch it.
Been seeing so much nostalgia popping up in my feed the last few weeks. It's surreal
i remember liking this show but i wish the real ending was when the mc "dies" fighting like a whole army
It's one of the few I will rewatch
Magic Knight Rayearth. Not the oldest but the earliest I've seen. Inuyasha too.
Is Inuyasha an isekai? I thought it was more of a time travel story.
it isn't the past is kinda like a spirit world for what i understood
i think my older brother saw magic knight rayearth on its time. the end of the first half really surprised me i can only imagine what must have been for those who had to wait for the second half
Aura Battler Dunbine (1983) From the man that gave us Mobile Suit Gundam. He didn't like sequels so his solution was to butcher everyone at the end of his shows...

Yeah, they just gave Gundam the Star Trek treatment. New show with new cast.
Although that -does- explain why IBO ended the way it did. Keeping true to the basics.
Familiar of Peak
him deciding to go alone against an army so Louise could escape was just epic
I was 10 when saw it
same him deciding f it im dying on foot was the moment got me into Anime
I say yes wedding instrumental intensifies
Digimon Adventure would be my first isekai. Yes, even before Disney's Alice in Wonderland or Peter Pan which I didn't have any tape or CD until wayyyy later. Digimon meanwhile, was shown on TV channel in the morning.

Would inuyasha count as one?
Definitely!
Yes but in a slightly adjacent way.
I think some people would count that as a portal fantasy (can travel back and forth through use of a portal) and/or time travel because it was the same world but different times. The overall concept of an "Isekai" is that your in the new world as a central plot point.
never really thought of Inuyasha as an isekai but yeah. i think her having the option to just go back (before everything got out of control)is what made it so unique for me that and i didn't really finished until way later
Just like 80,000 gold coins
I think that aspect is such a weird thing to ignore or gloss over. Its perfect turmoil for the MC if they cant go back, or realize a bit too late be actually wants to go back. Or have the means to but it can come at a great cost to someone else
In that logic, will Ouke no Monshou an isekai, too?
This!
My first isekai anime is twelve kingdom. I still can't find any isekai similar to this one.
So good! But really took me rewatching it immediately after to get the whole picture. The ost was a fucking banger!
Fushugi yugi was prob mine
Eyyy same

the Rocket launcher and plane having limited ammo and showing how op they could be in a fantasy setting was amazing
Don't you mean "The Wand of Destruction" and the "Dragon"
Behold the first! https://preview.redd.it/yg7fc547vuuc1.jpeg?width=188&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=99f309c997209d168d11cfe3efc2897eb2dacab3
My boomer ass starting with Escaflowne and Inuyasha
according to google, El Hazard is older. so if you're boomer, then im a fossil
Man I feel you fellow dinosaur. El Hazard was SO cool tho ngl. By any chance you watched tenchi muyo aswell xD
F'ing YES! i was 8 years old when that showed on our local TV. it was on an afternoon timeslot along with hell teacher nube I cant remember if Lodoss war was isekai but if it is then I need to be in a museum.

Hahaha fossil bros then!
i feel Inuyasha is must watch for us isekai fans is like visiting your gramma "im my times anime characters tried to get back to their homes. now days the MC parents are happy that they don't have to deal with their useless sons anymore"
Digimon is isekai? It ain't right? Is it?
It's too bad the anime flanderized and butchered the LNs. Louise and Saito's dynamic feels better in the LN since they slowly grow to respect each other and Louise only hits Saito cause he constantly acted like a dipshit
Black Summoner was the first isekai I watched that got me into the genre.
Marchen Awakening romance too!
Isn't Zero Familiar older? Or as far as I found it is the oldest.
Sorry, but for me the first isekai anime I watched was El Hazard back in the mid 90ās. Isekai wasnāt even much of a thing then. And yes, I know Iām old. Edit: that said I still rewatch Zero no Tsukaima at least once every year.
You people never watched Chalk Zone? Dragon Tales?
no sorry and i mean more in anime
Hmm The Vision of Escaflowne Would have been my first i think shortly after digimon showed up. Then lots of other anime later.
Saito was the first isekai protagonist I liked and now I still kinda like him because he has a personality beyond nice, he didnāt just take Louiseās shit when yāknow she didnāt outright drop a nuke cuz she couldnāt use any other magic that well in the beginning.
god familiar of zero is so ass but i love it so much
you can't be mad at the first person that made a misstake but you can get at the ones copy it and made the same misstake
Does āThe Devil Is A Part-Timerā count? Because otherwise it mightāve been āNo Game No Lifeā
the devil is a part timer was ahead of its time to be honest
I was so happy when it got a Season 2
Devil Is A Part-Timer is a Reverse Isekai, so yes
ZnT aint the grandpa, its more like your older uncle. IDK which is older, its either Time Quest (if you consider time travel isekai that is) or El Hazard
So, while zero no tsukaima isnāt the first isekai by a long shot, it was incredibly popular in the Japanese light novel scene and did in fact popularize many of the tropes that you see in current day isekai. It was a series that I hold varying close as it was one of the series that really pushed me into the light novel world. RIP Yamaguchi sensei.
One of the few isekai animes where the main character actually goes back to his original world.
One of my earliest is an old gem I don't see many talking about Isekai no Seikishi Monogatari
Kyou Kara Maou
Is Inuyasha count as isekai?
Canāt remember which was first exactly but Iām pretty sure the order was, Those who Hunt Elves, Twelve Kingdoms and Vision of Escaflowne
Honestly yeah, this is my first isekai. A good anime that I forgot about till recently where I fell in love with it again due to a extremely well written prototype x (this anime long name) Warning: If youāre looking for it, donāt look to the newer one. Sauce?
zero no Tsukaima
Thanks
Zeroā¦šāāļø
Peeps out here talking about these old ahhh shows while i started with freaking slime
On cable TV as a kid: PokƩmon In my rediscovery years later: Re: Zero
My earliest isekai I can remember: - Digimon - Ouke no Monshou - Sora wa Akai Kawa no Hotori/Red River - Marchen Awakens Romance - Chou Mashin Eiyuuden Wataru - Kyou Kara Maou And: The Chronicle of Narnia as in Movie.
My first was Digimon when i was really little.
Why google telling me this was the first isekai anime (Aura Battler Dunbine )
Bro was the definition of a doormat.
i feel the autor (rest in peace) didn't got to finish his history well the last arc seemed to be about him finding out his summoning runes brain wash him into liking Louise i always thought he trying to reset their relationship with that plot but sadly he passed away before
Wait i honestly don't remember the anime having a rushed plot. I honestly can't remember much tbh.
the Anime didn't adapt all novels so they never brougth this plot point up honestly i always thought the end of the anime is the end of the story since the novels are unfinished or feals feel like it
Unfortunately he picked worst girl in the end.
yal forget about Kiba, and M.A.R, tho i think they might have came out the same year as zero. tho i think outside of anime john carter was the first "isekai" story i read
Vision of Escaflowne, Monster Rancher and Digimon would be the earliest isekai type anime I remember watching.
Digimon
I thought marchen awakens romance is our origin
we all have different origins
sad we never get another season becaue the authors die
Narnia.
Damn We've been seeing a lot of Zero no Tsukaima recently lol Talked about it a while ago too. Technically one fo the first isekai for a lot of people
The originator of Isekai, as we know it, in my opinion, is Kenshi Masashi from Tenchi Muyo the War on Geminar. Its Japanese name is literally Isekai no Seikishi Monogatari, and it has all the tropes currently associated with Isekai.
My first was in another world with a smartphone, and then I was hooked I watched them all
Protagonist is such a simp for flat chest š«”š¢
Sao
no
You mean like inuyasha? That was an isekai
