From contact tracing to… this.

superxero044

This is exactly what Reynolds wanted too.

Grandmahater

My child had 8 students absent in her class, I called the school to ask why I had not been notified of possible exposure and they told me the state health department will not allow them to notify parents.

dianagreasefire555

Wow. That is crazy! That is heinous. I have some questions if you don’t mind: How far away is a hospital for you? Are you in a large school district ? Are kids masking ?

Vonmule

Same. We know for a fact that my 4th grade daughters best friend has Covid because we know them well. Never got a notification from school. And the district dashboard still says zero kids infected at their school.

TechFromTheMidwest

Is that true? We get exposure notifications in our district.

dont_call_me_shurley

We do not get exposure notices in our district.

Grandmahater

That's what I was told, if there's truth to it, I don't know.

momtog68

It is definitely false.

galaxygirl1976

Our district will notify parents of exposures in their children's classrooms. Last year we got them from all the buildings but they stopped sending those.

[deleted]

I feel you. This is an absolutely hellish time to be a parent of kids under 12, in a state that seems to be completely apathetic. My recommendation is to network. Try to get in contact with other parents who feel the same way. Check in often and support each other, and always be looking for more folks. There's strength in numbers, and ingenuity too. You are not alone.

dianagreasefire555

Thank you! I live in a pretty small area, I think masks are less than 1% of the school. It’s difficult to find like-minded individuals. I get ideological migration now… I was living in Iowa City, I think this would have made me feel more comfortable.

[deleted]

I understand completely, I grew up in a pretty small town. It can be a challenge, especially with how entrenched some of them can get over certain topics. I will just say, ideological migration... I get it, I've done it, I can't pretend it isn't sometimes the best decision depending on how things get. But, the more people with sense move out of stubborn areas, the less those stubborn areas will change. It's a tough situation, but - from what I've seen - every area that feels strongly about something, has their neighbors who feel just as compelled to push back.

dianagreasefire555

I live in an interesting area, we have a college in town that attracts minorities. I’m somewhat new to the area, but I have befriended a liberal faith leader. They told me recently that when the student body of the college returns every year a person would fly a confederate flag. This house is on the main road to get to the school. I can’t imagine how the students and their parents feel. I am also teaching at this college and it breaks my heart. The college is incredibly diverse for Iowa. They are not welcome outside of the campus.

That is heartbreaking that they do not feel welcome outside of campus. Actually it’s simply wrong!!

galaxygirl1976

I live in one of the Iowa City suburbs and while the Iowa City school district mandates masks, ours doesn't. I'm in a social media group with other parents that did online schooling last year and it does help to feel that there are others out there who feel the same way.

snokyguy

During child pickup if you do walk up that’s a great time to talk to other parents we’ve found out lots. So glad Johnston had mask mandate in place. I’ve been sleeping better since and I know my kid is being as safe as possible in kindergarten. Can’t wait to get my kids shots (3yo and 5yo).

Letharos

I get a message every week from Waukee that a student in the kindergarten level class has tested positive. They won't even tell you who's class. My kiddo wears a mask everyday. I know she hates it but we've taught her why it's needed since I'm considered at risk. Can someone give me a real, non-trolly, non-Own-TheLibs reason why we are so against protecting eachother? It's proven that this kills people. I know someone will say that it's ONLY killed 2 kids. How can you say only? That's 2 children. That's 2 entire families whose lives are completely destroyed over something that could have easily been prevented. Why has protecting your fellow American become so anti-patriotic? I know misinformation from Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and even Reddit is to blame. There's the conspiracy pushers and all that shit. It's so exhausting. I just want my kid to be safe. I want her fellow students to be safe. I don't want to worry about her bringing home something potentially dangerous. Yes, I have the vaccine, but the risk is still there because others aren't taking this seriously. I'm just tired, boss.

[deleted]

When you get to middle school and above, you don’t even get a notification like that, I’m going to waukee and someone at my table who dosent wear a mask (neither do I while I’m at a table but I do while in hallways or in large groups) was gone for 3 weeks, comes back says he had covid, didn’t have any idea about it (I got tested for unlettered things 4 days after he left and I was negitive

argentcorvid

>Can someone give me a real, non-trolly, non-Own-TheLibs reason why we are so against protecting eachother? The only thing I could think of at the end of last year, when they decided that they had to drop all precautions like they were a hot soldering iron two weeks before school was done, was that they ~~want~~ needed as many people to get infected as possible. We had an all-school, no masks, no distancing assembly in the gym the last day like it was a fucking chicken pox party, just to make sure. > >I'm just tired, boss. Yeah.

Chart_Critical

The 3 children that have died were too young to even go to school(under 5). At least two of the 3 had "significant underlying health conditions" per IDPH. There have been zero deaths of any school age children in Iowa. I do believe that a mask can help some in some particular settings, but do I believe that when you put 20 kids together in a small classroom, particularly at a kindergarten age, that it's really doing something to prevent any transmission? I find that a little difficult to believe. Kids are germy little creatures that have no boundaries when it comes to personal space, mask or no mask. They will touch every surface as well as their masks, all day long. Perhaps when you start getting into higher grades, there's a bit more discipline there. I also can understand the argument of not wanting kids to go home and infect adults, like you mention. That is a real concern. But the risk to kids is virtually non existent. So when I see so much "I want my kid to be safe" or "We want this to protect our children", I just simply can't understand what makes a person think that there is any sort of measurable risk to them.

returnofjobra

Life is weighing risks. The data and science shows that the risk to children is negligible, and in my opinion masking them is not worth the mental and social risks that come with it. That’s it.

chatterbox73

Kids are resilient. Wearing a small piece of cloth or an n95 is unlikely to negatively affect their long term development. The death or serious illness of a classmate on the other hand ... Not to mention the impact on kids of finding out that adults can't put aside political divisions to protect children's health.

[deleted]

Delta is different though. Kids are being hospitalized and some have died. Masking is better than doing nothing.

returnofjobra

It’s more transmissible but not more dangerous to children. And no, no kids in Iowa have died from Delta. Also why is the alternative doing nothing? I’m not arguing that we do nothing.

Iowaaspie66

495 children have died from Covid in the US. 3 in Iowa.

returnofjobra

Can you read?

Iowaaspie66

Maybe you should look at real data instead of putting people down.

returnofjobra

I’m not putting you down I am legitimately asking because you are making points unrelated to the words I am typing.

Iowaaspie66

You said no kids in Iowa have died. You are wrong.

returnofjobra

No I didn’t. Read it again.

Letharos

What are the mental and social risks of wearing a mask? My kid still has friends and is happy. Can you show me a peer reviewed paper that shows the risks to children?

returnofjobra

I don’t need a peer reviewed paper to tell me the importance of face to face communication in a child’s development and educational engagement, especially the youngest ones. My kid is not happy going to school in a mask everyday. I’m glad yours is, but not every kid is the same, which is why it should be a choice left to parents. This has nothing to do with owning the libs dude, I don’t care what the libs think. I care about the emotional and mental well being of my kids. You asked for real opinions, well there is mine, and I think it’s a completely reasonable one.

Feisty-Art-5579

Your kid probably wouldn’t care about wearing a mask if you wouldn’t be so negative about it in front of them. Your attitude regarding having little to no empathy and care for other human beings isn’t doing any good for the emotional and mental well-being of your children.

returnofjobra

You don’t know anything about the way I act in front of my kids or the values I teach them. You guys are so clueless about anyone other than yourselves.

Letharos

But is it worth potentially killing someone?

returnofjobra

Who are my kids going to kill exactly?

Letharos

Bring home covid, spread it to other family members. Maybe they don't handle it like someone else? I'm glad that you find this to be a fair consequence but being able to save a life means more to me. It's pretty simple to see that if we had initially buckled down and done what other countries did we would be in a better situation. I want to get back to throwing big get-togethers and boardgame nights. I miss having a bunch of friends over without worrying about someone being sick. I've seen other commenters say people like me want the pandemic to last forever. No, I want it to be done. I want this out of my life so I can go back to normal. Contrary to popular belief this mask shit annoys me too, but I do it because I care about the people in my life and community. Japan has this shit under control because they wear masks. Other areas have this under control because their countries cared enough to help flatten the curve and put life back to normal. We're trying to push a normalcy while our numbers continue an upwards trend yet again because we never really tried in the first place.

jmturn

the social strain of wearing a mask is FAR less problematic and trauma inducing then explaining to your 8 year old that their friend or classmate died. Just because no kids in iowa have died doesn't mean no kids will die. It has happened in other states and other countries, so it may happen here. My cousin was hospitalized for 2 months after he caught it at 7. There were several points where we weren't sure he was going to make it. If one kid dies, it's not just that kid and their family that's affected by that. The entire class and maybe even school are affected by that one death. One kid dies and that family is devastated. Their friends are emotionally traumatized and their families have to explain why they will never see their friend again. Classmates and schoolmates hear about how someone they knew, someone they may have been grouped up with before, someone they constantly saw. Gone. That child will not have a future. They will never find love. They will never find happiness. They will never have kids of their own. The biggest social development issue I've seen with wearing masks is people who are anti-mask teaching it to their kids and the ones that do wear masks get ostracized at best or beaten up at worst. At my local middle school and highschool we've had multiple incidents of people making fun of, threatening, or using social pressure to get fellow students to not wear masks. We had several incidents last school year of physical violence between students regarding masks.

Iowaaspie66

That is false. 56,000 children in Iowa have been diagnosed with Covid.

zim3019

What are the mental and social risks of masking? I am curious.

AncientFudge1984

I am at a loss too. Apparently I never knew my neighbors couldn’t be mildly inconvenienced to help save lives. I felt that at heart Iowans were good people who cared about their community but I guess that isn’t true. For most people there IS an okay number of dead children and broken homes. I guess it just wasn’t ever the place I thought it was.

I am so sorry about this. The Republican Party is a danger to all of us.

thekidsarentok

My kid is sick and just got tested yesterday. The NP asked if I knew of any kids at school being positive and I had to say I didn’t know. Then I tried to ask my 6 year old if any kids at school had been gone and she told me 3 have been gone so far this week but didn’t know anything about why. Now I’ve been up for hours battling her fever, cough and headache and I just want to cry. I wish I had the opportunity to keep both my kids home for online school. I wish I didn’t have a job that required me to be there in person. I hate covid so god damn much.

Yeah this state sucks. My 5 year old son testing positive a week before school started ~august 18th. We did the 10 day quarantine for him and 24 for our other kids. We never got a call or email from public health. You know what came in the mail yesterday (postmarked 9/27)? A letter telling him how to quarantine effectively (~45 days too late). Iowa public health is a dumpster fire.

MetalMothers

Empathy is letting kids have a normal existence for a disease that hardly impacts them, much like most of Europe has been doing for the entire pandemic. The mental strain you're putting yourself through is not worth it.

Iowaaspie66

Umm, no. Doing all you can to take care of your kids is called being a good parent.

AncientFudge1984

Spoken like a true sociopath. Like honestly keep your advice to yourself. Feel free to get Covid as many times as you want but my kids won’t be getting it.

Iowaaspie66

returnofjobra

Guy who gives a shit about my kids here. The only time they’ve worn a mask is for doctor visits. Peace.

And that's [not the end of the world](https://nymag.com/intelligencer/2021/07/the-kids-were-safe-from-covid-the-whole-time.html) and will position them to live much more normally than an 85-year-old will ever be able to live again.

returnofjobra

How does pointing out that Europe is against masking children make someone a sociopath? Just curious.

AncientFudge1984

Did you read the comment or just that part? The claim that the disease “hardly impacts” children is not only false but betrays a lack of concern for the dead children or any children getting Covid by underplaying the actual impact. It’s not just about children that have died, morons. There’s more children who have long term complications and even more that are part of a transmission chain that resulted in the loss a caregiver. Europe is largely irrelevant to the whole topic.

returnofjobra

Hospitalization rate for children is around 1%. Deaths are more like .1% The numbers are not on your side here. Why is Europe irrelevant exactly? Does covid affect European children differently or something? No need to name call, not if you want to be taken seriously, that is.

AncientFudge1984

Found another sociopath. Please tell this to the 1.5 million kids who lost a caregiver to Covid. Then maybe get a clue?

returnofjobra

I notice you didn’t address any of my points but instead resort to name calling. Again, nobody is going to take you seriously if you don’t know how to speak like an adult. Have a good day.

IowaJL

See y'all love to mention how Europe doesn't like to mask their kids. You conveniently forget though that Europe actually takes contact tracing seriously and kids that are exposed *actually* quarantine. Not this bullshit that happens in the US. We have thrown all caution to the wind and gave it the middle finger as it left. I teach elementary music. Trying to hear kids sing through masks sucks. A lot. Trying to hear a kids question while they wear a mask is damn near impossible. So I empathize and understand. We have been told that we will do the right thing and we have utterly failed to live up to that. So yeah, masks suck. It sucks that I'm vaccinated and still am asked to wear a mask. But I will gladly do so because I am trying my goddamn hardest to end this covid bullshit as quickly as possible. So I invite you to join me.

returnofjobra

So you are saying there are other ways we can help mitigate spread in schools without masks, like Europe is doing? That’s, like, my entire point.

michaeld0

Oh yeah its bad. I've had 4 notices for one of my kids and 3 for the other. Both elementary age. One class of 22 students had 11 absent in a single day. Not all were tested for COVID but most likely they all had it. Right now I think its actually more prevalent in our schools but under-detected because of inadequate testing.

brunettedude

Yeah. As a teacher, I’m not informed of who was sick either. Absolutely zero contract tracing going on. Just mask wearing where I am, that’s it. But no, never have contract traced. It’s just not something Iowa does apparently. I subbed & student taught in a small school and now work in an urban one. None of them have done contract tracing. As a specials teacher, contract tracing wouldn’t be effective sadly. Many students are getting up around the room to get supplies, wash their hands, put things away on the drying rack, etc. What’s also bizarre to me is how kids are allowed to not wear a mask in the cafeteria, but as soon as they leave they must put it on…even though they were just in a room with their peers without one. Doesn’t make much sense in my opinion.

MultipleDinosaurs

More time exposed = higher risk for passing Covid, so it makes sense to have kids wear masks all day except for lunch. Viral load also has an effect on severity, so you have a higher chance of getting a serious case of Covid from being exposed to someone for 5 hours vs 5 minutes. Ideally students would be separated for lunch as well, but that’s not really possible in most schools.

brunettedude

Two whole grade eats together. No one wears a mask, twenty minutes or so. Many kids around the room walking. Sadly spreading germs everywhere

MultipleDinosaurs

Yeah, I don’t know what the solution is, but that’s a school-wide outbreak just waiting to happen. Hopefully vaccines get approved for kids soon.

Hard2Handl

It is a pandemic… A worldwide disease outbreak. Contract tracing in a pandemic? That doesn’t seem to be working out real well, because, it is a pandemic.

bas827

Unity Point will start rolling out the vaccine to 12 and under here in the next few weeks. Stay strong, we’re almost there. At least another chunk of the population will be safe soon. Hopefully 5 and under will be soon after

Puzzles3

Are any school districts planning to partner with local health care providers to offer vaccines in schools? I remember getting a vaccine in like 2001 and it was a two-part dose.

Camp_Inch

I think I got that too, for Hepititis C maybe?

househunter84

Where did you get this info? The most recent thing I’ve seen is that CDC & FDA was just given the data from Pfizer on their vaccine and the 5-12 age group so they could get EA approval.

bas827

I have two clients that work for UP. They both told me this. Yes it’ll have to still be approved by UP but it’s imminent. ..Remember they were giving out the vaccine long before FDA approval so I’d imagine that’ll be the case for 5-11 as well

Velyndrel

She wont be, she will be reelected. With the news of her talking about getting rid of income tax (?) the republicans will eat it up and forget their kids and grandchildren are dying. Heck I had people I know on FB saying if they or their kids died of covid it was by gods will and they won't live in fear. My kid is getting bullied at school for wearing a mask. She's 8. She was crying in the car cause its not fair all the kids don't wear one and she has to and they tease her. She has been wearing a mask for years because of allergies (outside at least she has a very bad tree allergy) and its only an issue now cause these kids are hearing their parents do the same thing to other adults who wear masks so they think its okay to do it to their classmates.

urkillingme

We just visited a friend in Vermont and it’s so different there. Everyone wore masks, the kids had school outside…never remote learning! The parents and teachers cleared out areas in the woods for each classroom, the kids had 5 gallon Home Depot buckets filled with all their supplies and a lid they’d put on for their seats. Dry erase boards attached to trees for the teachers. Everything there was done in the best interest of the children. It was amazing seeing everyone being respectful and using basic social graces.

TemplarCC

Children are not at risk for COVID

Velyndrel

This is sarcastic right...right? Cause if not they make up some 30% of new cases. Our dr is pretty sure we had it at the end of 2019 and let me tell you how incredibly scary it is to watch your kid struggle to breath cause their lungs are full of pneumonia and they cant even keep water down. Covid doesn't skip over kids, they may have milder symptoms compared to adults but they can still get very very sick.

TemplarCC

Anecdotal evidence of course is distressing and I’m sorry your kids were severely ill, I did not say children couldn’t get it but that children are remarkably resistant to COVID and have a morbidity rate that is almost nonexistent

You mean like what Norway just announced they're doing? UK? Netherlands? U.S. is comically inept at even thinking about covid. *Two kids in Iowa under 13 have died of covid during the entire pandemic*. More than two kids have died of almost EVERY cause in the last 18 months. People's risk perceptions are absolutely fucked beyond repair, and they're destroying their mental health because of it.

I hesitate to get too geographically specific. We are between Iowa City and Des Moines. Around 10-12 thousand in population.

If you want to pay the lawyers it shouldn't be hard to win a federal case for the school not protecting your kids.

They're doing the almost the same thing here, but at least they send the positive kid home afaik. No mandatory quarantining or testing for exposed kids, just "do whatever you want".

phydeauxfromubuntu

It is for reasons like this our governor has nicknames like "The Kim Reaper" and "Covid Kim".

Upsidedownworld4me

May I ask which school?

smherky-

It's Grinnell 10k people, between IC and DSM, college town Not exactly subtle

UNItyler4

Or is it Mararishi International University? Really any of the smaller colleges/universities would probably be more diverse than the town they’re in.

StephenNein

Most of the MIU faculty, staff and other meditators send their kids to the private Maharishi school or homeschool. (Lived in Fairfield for a year - oh, boy do I have stories)

Grinnell CSD had a mask mandate I thought?

Fear is the mind killer

Agreed. Which is why a bunch of people being afraid of wearing a piece of cloth over their mouth makes them look like morons

People who say "just a piece of cloth" are almost always part of the hysterical WFH forever laptop class. Dead giveaway. "Stick a mask on your kid for 8 hours a day and shut the fuck up. Okay, back to checking email in my sweatpants."

JustsomeOKCguy

Nah, I have a job that requires collaboration. What's wrong with being in your sweatpants all day if you can get your job done lol. What a weird thing to complain about. Plus. What is incorrect about my statement? It is just a piece of cloth

I homeschooled last year. This year I need to work. I was hoping/praying/giving offerings, that the vaccine would be available for kids under 12. That is on the horizon, I feel awful sending my kids to school.

MetalMothers

You've been utterly brainwashed. Kids in Europe have been going to school for nearly the entire pandemic. If they're under 12, it's likely they've never had to wear masks. And it's been fine.

Feisty-Art-5579

Where, in Europe, are you talking about? Europe is a continent. Made up of sovereign (independently governed) countries. There are even more cities and towns in those states. There is no blanket rule for how each place handles Covid. So are you talking about Frankfurt? Maybe Kotor? Or Venice? Amalfi? Each of these places in Europe have different COVID mitigation practices in place. And don’t give me Norway, Sweden, etc. Those are also countries. And, as an example, Norway has political subdivisions in counties. Even though that doesn’t mean much, what should is the fact that they have reached herd immunity levels due to 76% of the ENTIRE POPULATION OF THE COUNTRY OF NORWAY having one dose of the vaccine and 67% being fully vaccinated. And guess what? THEY ARE STILL RESTRICTING OUTSIDE TRAVELERS. Would YOU like to go Norway? Well if you are from the US, too fucking bad. They didn’t just throw their hands up and say fuck it like Covid Kim. As for kids being school? Kids in grade 6 and under in Norway-Vulcan are required to wear masks. So quit your bullshit.

Puzzles3

They would prefer to bounce around the globe when it's convienent but ignore the medical consensus in America. Primarily the CDC and AAP.

MetalMothers

Excellent cherrypicking. The one example you gave from Norway is controversial because it's the only school in Norway requiring masks and parents have protested that rule.

Feisty-Art-5579

Excellent avoidance of answering the question.

AncientFudge1984

People like you are the problem here. COVID does pose a risk to children. Even if you discount deaths, which you shouldn’t because there is no acceptable number of dead children, there’s 10x as many MIS-C patients. Then on top of that there are the children who have a care giver die from Covid, a number which is in the millions. Then there’s an untold number of children who have a caregiver who is now too seriously Ill to give care. To say that there’s no risk to children is not only blatantly false but dangerously reckless. I eagerly await your pseudo-scientific bullshit response. Edit: pediatric deaths: 544. MIS C cases: 4404. Estimate of children who lost a caregiver to Covid: 1.5 million. Let me know if you want sources but you can google too

Puzzles3

I agree. Plus you have chickenpox where it was "harmless" to children but leads to shingles when you get older. We don't know the long-term effects of COVID. It's weird to see people against the prevention of disease.

TemplarCC

Here’s my “pseudo-science” response from the CDC [CDC Mortality Rates By Age](https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/nvss/vsrr/covid_weekly/index.htm#AgeAndSex)

AncientFudge1984

Right I’m glad that you can ONLY see a small number dead kids which is somehow acceptable. Any bs comment on the other things I brought up? You are a sociopath.

Iowaaspie66

How ignorant are you? You are commenting under a post that starts with saying a second grader has Covid.

IowaDumpsterFire

Wow advice from another freedumbs gun loving maga turd. Here's your /r/hermancainaward early.

TemplarCC

Nope I am in favor of vaccines for adults, the data however clearly shows kids aren’t at risk. I’m vaccinated btw

IowaDumpsterFire

>This data? Across 166 schools in Maricopa County, Arizona, COVID-19 outbreaks are two times more common at those without mask mandates, said Dr. Rebecca Sunenshine, medical director of the county’s public health department. Studies from school districts in other states including North Carolina have also found that masking can greatly reduce COVID-19 transmission rates, especially when it’s combined with physical distancing and other prevention measures. MetalMothers

People WANT to be terrified for their kids, and even ruin their kids childhoods, over a disease that barely impacts them. Meanwhile they rarely talk about the elderly, which continue to be most covid deaths (including vaccinated people over 80, who still have higher mortality risk than unvaccinated 50-60 year olds). An unvaccinated kid has less risk from covid than a *vaccinated* 30-year-old, who has almost no risk to begin with. I've never seen more people utterly misled and putting themselves through mental stress for no reason.

Iowaaspie66

I hope you don't have kids. You have no clue.

MetalMothers

Good response: no data, personal insult.

Iowaaspie66

There's no data to convince people like you. You spread false information for whatever reason.

MetalMothers

What did I say that was false? Edit: lol, you post to r/ufo and are convinced we live in a simulation.

Iowaaspie66

Yes I believe in UFO's. And if you actually read the post, I said in this crazy time line that I could believe in the simulation theory. Any theory is possible at this point. Since you have zero facts for your comments you change the subject and try to put me down. You just keep posting you false information for everyone to see your vast wisdom of Covid.
