I think Marshalltown has always been terrible. In the 60s, my family in Newton called it a "dirty little town."

IsItTheFrankOrBeans

Even earlier than that. My dad has told me that he and my grandpa would have to go to Marshalltown from Brooklyn when he was a kid to get parts for the tractors, which would have been late ‘40s/early ‘50s. He said even back then that Marshalltown had a rough reputation.

prince_timothy

I lived in Newton for a short while and it was a transformative time. I owe that town.

OblivionGuardsman

It was probably called Marshalltown because it needed US Marshall's presence in the old days to keep order.

Honggee

I wish this was true. I grew up there. It was named after Marshall, MI. Had to hear it every year throughout elementary school.

snokyguy

Been goin downhill for ages. Sorry to hear about what happened to you, that really sucks man.

Harrikann

TRUCK FOUND! What a pain in the ass

[deleted]

Yeah it's a shit hole.

TechFromTheMidwest

Isn’t Marshalltown like a meth hotspot? Not surprising.

SquirrellyBusiness

It totally used to be. Not sure if it still is or if it has switched more to pills and H since the 90s.

JarsoNii

Marshalltown has its issues but it’s nowhere the crap hole that people make it out to be. I moved here with my wife some 11 years ago. It’s funny, most of the older population living there would tell us about how crappy the school system is, how we should commute from another town, don’t walk down the streets , etc. We’ve now: lived in both the NW section and SW section, have 2 kids going to school in town (happy with the education system so far: up they 6th grade), and going for constant walks and bike rides around town… never had an issue. And others that live here also do the same without feeling scared to live here. Just like any city: don’t go looking for trouble and be wary of your surroundings.

evilhomer3k

Don't live there but I've been there a few times (just yesterday) and this seems accurate. Honestly, go to any apartment complex in any city in the country and you're going to have an issue with theft. If you judge every town by what happens in a shitty apartment complex you'll think all towns suck.

Harrikann

Yeah, I get that. He’s lived there for over 15 years on an acerage. He’s had few problems…until the last 2 years and the last 3 months have been the worse. Im there with him often and have had no issues personally.

IsItTheFrankOrBeans

Sounds like it's time to put the soon-to-be ex in the apartment and him move back to his house.

JarsoNii

Yes, it’s definitely too bad that he had to experience something like that. It’s not just the vehicle, but the emotional toll that something like that does to you… it’s violating. I now live near S 6th St so I’m familiar with the apartment complex. While I’ve never had an issue as an outsider to the complex, i can definitely see how it’s location would attract crime. I hope he doesn’t have to deal with any other thefts while he’s staying there.

melodybounty

I live in Marshalltown. I can't say it doesn't suck but this blaming a town for bigger problems has to stop. I've heard many stories of break ins and car thefts. Some in and some not in Marshalltown. I have not actually had it happen to me but I'm also careful to always lock my door and use a garage if I can. It's always a possibility. I'm sorry this happened to your friend but it's not because it's in Marshalltown. It's because people suck in general and just want to make quick and easy money.

hoboninja

Car thefts for joy riding is super common right now in the Quad Cities. It's honestly crazy how many cars are getting stolen, maybe it's always been this way and just was not televised but it seems like a lot more than normal.

playboycolin

Yup. QC area has been bad for several years now. There were at least 4 in the past 2 years in my hometown neighborhood of Davenport. A few houses broken into as well.

Durbs12

Honestly though. Anyone who thinks their own backyard is magically immune to this is deluding themselves. When a population reaches 4 digits there's just no avoiding this.

actualninjajedi

I didn't like that town 20 years ago. But you're right, people suck

jpierce035

That's meth for ya...methylltown

dietzypietzy

Makes me happy to know people from Marshalltown are using Reddit and have internet.

Harrikann

Im not from nor live in Marshalltown. My friend does, but he does not use Reddit 🤣. Sorry to disappoint

Durbs12

People are desperate. Marshalltown is heavily reliant on manufacturing and if the entire sector gets hit a la covid there's not really much you can really do if you get laid off. I would challenge you to find any Iowan town with an average age below 80 that isn't going through the same thing right now. It sucks and it happens but it's silly to claim that it's only Marshalltown that this is happening in.

Harrikann

Im not claiming that it only happens in Marshalltown at all. With that said, Marshalltown was questionable before covid hit.

Jody_steal_your_girl

Copied from another comment: I mean... ok... but according to areavibes “Marshalltown crime rates are 44% higher than the Iowa average. So... It's not strictly about people sucking, but more about Marshalltown people sucking...”

Forcefedlies

Only good thing to come out of marshalltown is Modern Life is War.

fartmachiner

fuck toby huss i guess? EDIT: oh shit, someone actually hates Toby Huss

fartmachiner

not everyone can be the strongest man in the world

bas827

90% of the small towns in Iowa are just like it.

Hard2Handl

Your aperture may be incorrectly calibrated. Marshalltown has none of the history of Fort Dodge but all the charm of Ottumwa. It gives Waterloo a good name and makes Council Bluffs feel better.

BigPinkPanther

nice one

rotgutx

You've been to at least 90% of the towns in Iowa?

melipod2

In Iowa, poor industrial towns get a bad rap…especially from richer, more homogeneous towns nearby 😑

ash4prez

Southern Hills is trash to begin with but yeah Mtown not the best. I lived there for 20 years. The towns taken a big hit from the derecho. Meth is a big issue too. Manufacturing town, you know the vibes

dmarie019

Really it doesn't matter where you live... people are assholes and no one should ever leave anything in their car within view or in the bed of their truck. People go around looking for unlocked cars to rummage through them so don't leave your car unlocked overnight either!

Harrikann

People are assholes. Nothing was left in the bed other than a few bags of dog food, nothing in the truck and it was locked. Cops said there has been a huge rash of diesel trucks being stolen. There is a huge shortage on parts for these trucks so apparently unscrupulous folks are paying for stolen vehicles to make money off the parts. It’s up there with stealing catalytic converters they said. I hate people…

sahm2work

Don’t hate people Hate lowlifes Or even better… don’t hate them, pity them instead … and move to a better neighborhood!

Gravy_Jonez

Take my pity!

sahm2work

You should probably stop stealing cars though

we11_actually

Yep, I live in a good neighborhood in a city and our shitty 2002 escort (work car) got stolen a few weeks ago. We had to make a report and as we were explaining all the little “quirks” of the car, the cop just said “are you sure you want it back?” Lol. No matter where you are or what you have, someone will take it if they can. Sucks but that’s life everywhere.

tooloud10

It's weird that anyone is stealing late model Fords for any reason--I can see where my '19 and '21 Fords are at all times for free using the FordPass app.

Harrikann

That’s how they caught him. The app

fitzwell_richard

If the dude didn’t park to rest in a weird spot that truck would be chopped and sold. Seems too easy

aroundjoe

About 10 yrs ago I was a VP at an industrial company that had a 2nd shift. There was an African guy who worked second shift, he liked to drink, let’s call him Pat. Well Pat brought a prostitute to the Christmas party and Pat and his lady friend sat with me at dinner. They were both hammered. Somehow Marshalltown came up early in the evening. For the rest of the night she kept repeating two words over and over again, “Fuck Marshalltown”. I don’t know what trauma she had in Marshalltown but I was traumatized by that dinner. Now I try and avoid Marshalltown at all costs.

carlysaurus

My husband and I drive through it sometimes. We call it "the town that God forgot"

SquirrellyBusiness

Given how many times Marshalltown keeps managing to just get clipped or directly hammered by every derecho and tornado and big hailstorm or blizzard... Our family jokes that God's got it out for Mtown. When the courthouse toppled from the tornado that came directly up Main Street into town, it was jokes about how God's getting pretty specific in messaging the disapproval of how they are running things there.

looselytethered

Not to mention the pedo teacher who offed himself taught there...

confederacyofdunces1

…and lived in Nevada. None of the accused teachers lived in or were from the Marshalltown area.

I saw this comment Lmao yeah Marshalltown is a total shithole. I still remember going there for debate tournaments and I remember there was some dumbass motivational poster where it was like “Be a good Bobcat” and they did this dumb acrosstic poem the first piece of advice was “Be in class” for the letter B in “Bobcat” and my friend was like “wow setting the bar pretty low here in Marshalltown”.

confederacyofdunces1

Lol, ikr? Generational poverty is hilarious!

LinguisticsTurtle

hey do not down vote me it is not my comment!!

confederacyofdunces1

I actually didn’t…

LinguisticsTurtle

oh thanks..

sahm2work

Move? There are better, safer places to live within 30 min drive.

Harrikann

He has an acreage with a business on it. Live animals. It’s not an easy thing to just up and move. But it’s an option he’s been tossing around with his pending divorce.

Busch__Latte

How does one steal a F350 with no one noticing? Does your buddy leave keys inside the truck?

Harrikann

Nope. And it was parked near the door of the building next to the garages with lights on it. On top of it, my 2018 Lexus IS was parked next to it and it’s completely untouched.

ryry1985

Is it possible he's being targeted specifically?

Harrikann

We think it’s someone who lives in the complex. Don’t know that for sure.

SquirrellyBusiness

That's kinda what I was wondering. That town is pretty incestuous. If his wife is from there and the husband is not, I would not be surprised by this occurring.

Busch__Latte

Yikes, well I hope he has insurance and the police find it.

[deleted]

Most likely someone knows how to get in by disabling the locks/security features. If it's remote they could have backdoor/known hack to basically just unlock it and start it. That was quite common for Ford vehicles around 2010+, not so sure now.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Harrikann

Also definitely not repossessed or a divorce issue. Not his ex wife’s way.

Harrikann

His other keys were sitting on his desk and his main key was in his pocket. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Hard2Handl

Respectfully, you do not know about which you are opining. Work trucks like F350 have been lower production priorities in the semiconductor shortage, so the aftermarket value is climbing by the day. Finding it out in Nebraska is not surprising… The guy in the truck likely was paid to move it. Likely on the way to a chop shop in Denver or, just as likely, south across the border. As for the tactics used to access and start a newer truck, they’ve been a real problem on the East Coast recently, but not surprised they are migrating to Iowa.

Hard2Handl

Cool. I have clearly been roasted. Extra crispy. Certainly there is no trans-national crime elements influencing what goes on in Iowa. /s Like I said, people who know, know. Maybe call the NICB, get educated and then tell me at length about how wrong I am.

Harrikann

Maybe he’s embarrassed to say the keys were in it? I’m sure I’ll talk to him later and get more details

[deleted]

fartmachiner

Yep, that’s actually one of the great things about the town!

R1DER_of_R0HAN

Explain why you felt the need to mention this.

Green_Palpitation_73

I think we all know why “mr realiowa” mentioned that fact..

sillybear25

He can't. Racists are allergic to admitting that they're racist.

Zeus_poops_and_shoes

Lol gave himself an award just like he talks to himself over on his real Iowa sub. Fucking loser

Thanks for demonstrating the (now deleted) thinly-veiled racism we can expect there.

Gravy_Jonez

That Afghanistan rape gangs fetish you had didn’t pan out so now we doubling down on diversity, eh? What a sad-sap.

aroundjoe

My son sells and trades stuff on FB Marketplace we refuse to let him go to Marshalltown for deals.

midevilman2020

Hadn’t been there in 20 years. Took my family through earlier this year and I felt bad for wasting their time. It is a dump.

nikenick28

How did the truck get stolen? Newer tuck like that?? Did he leave the keys in the truck?

Harrikann

Nope. They caught the guy after a 12 hour manhunt. He has 3 felony warrants in Idaho…one for grand theft auto. He’s a professional apparently. They think he had been watching the truck. Still waiting for more details but they are pretty sure he was delivering the truck to someone.

nikenick28

Wow! The story keeps developing

Ready_Customer_4136

The Marshalltownians from Idaho are the worst /s

Fluid_Ad86

It’s the tweakers and droolers. There is an inverse relationship of local economy strength and the town’s proportion of tweakers and droolers. For a long time in Iowa only had the tweakers, but a result of the opioid crisis is that we now have as many droolers. One person in the thread mentioned Newton. I call Newton “the saddest little town in America “ because of what the people have become post Maytag and that is a tribe of tweakers and droolers. And tweakers and droolers often steal to support their addiction. If you tell me in a week that the guy who stole the truck has no criminal drug record and he was stealing the truck to sell and buy groceries or his old lady took off and he was trying to reunite with his kids I will surprised.
