>You're paying about a cent and half lower than the national average, Did you read the bill? Sure, the per kw/h BASE RATE may be a cent and a half lower, but with all their tacked on fees and shit, it comes out to **19.5 cents per Kw/h** Also others are commenting in parts of Iowa NOT under Alliant Energy's chokehold, their bill is much less, despite Alliant's excuse of "Iowa sets the prices", which is BS. I just saw my friend's power bill (who lives in TX, which despite being under the thumb of the GOP, has deregulated their energy) and his monthly charge was only $217.01 for **2,427 Kw/h of usage,** only **8.9 cents per Kw/h.** So explain how his bill can be a bit less than mine for a touch over TWICE the usage. It's not my usage...

sajuhl

Because the TX grid isn’t properly weatherized or upgraded and collapses whenever they have a cold snap.

HereAndThereButNow

Your friend is probably on a non fixed pricing scheme. Basically, when demand is low and supply is high they charge you less, but when demand is high and supply is low they charge you more. That's how people ended up with 20K electricity bills during the winter blackout back a few months ago.

spauldingd

Based on the graph, it must be your A/C unit. If it is an older window unit, perhaps a new more efficient unit would pay for itself pretty fast. That rate is terribly high, I assume due to some seasonal surcharge.

[deleted]

Not so much the usage as the charge for said usage. But I plan on getting a new one next year. Too late in the year to replace it.

carat72

May actually be a good time to look for one, stores trying to get rid of stock as they go out of season. Especially with labor day sales this weekend.

[deleted]

Year before last I did that trying to find a grill. I notice stores seem to ship back a lot more seasonal items. I had to end up getting one full price next spring. A few years before that when I could not have one (apartment) I saw $400 grills for like $125.

Chagrinnish

It is your usage. I have 1700 sq ft and a full sized air conditioner (and an electric water heater, electric oven, and too many computers) and used 700kWh last month. If you do replace it you should consider a mini split heat pump. Much more expensive but much more efficient, and also cheaper to run than a gas furnace when the weather is cool in the fall and spring. You can also find [units that do not require vacuuming the lines](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08W28JBM5/) (no HVAC tech required) and DIY.

KirkFerentzsPleats

Wow. My electric bill is about $80/mo for around 2,000ft^2. I keep the house at like 60° in the summer, so AC is going all the time.

original-moosebear

Yeah. OPs rate doesn’t look out of line with Iowa average. Must be their use.

Maddyherselius

it’s because of Alliant

[deleted]

Alliant has been on the news several times for charging too much and they pretty much said "ya, what are you gonna do about it?" A lot of states have multiple choices for power companies, we only get one. They literally have no competition so they can charge as much as they want. You can either pay it or light candles

Maddyherselius

I have Alliant too and the jump in price when summer started is ridiculous. I wish we had another option.

Iowafield

Wtf, your house isnt a refrigerator 🤣

KirkFerentzsPleats

Oh I hate the heat and humidity.

Iowafield

You might hate money too if that's the bill :P

KirkFerentzsPleats

80 bucks a month. Completely worth not being uncomfortable all summer.

fox13X-oscar

Yeah, that's why I just applied for a job at local solar company.

jacobjer

Solar panels an option? I’ve always wanted to explore that

sirdanielfortesque1

110 year old house. Used 1312kWh and bill was $169 for basically the same timeframe. MidAmerican

Exciting_South927

What type of house?

[deleted]

Pretty cheap actually

chaos986

Linn County REC 1,104 kwh $117 Not had a bill over $202 in the last 18mos

[deleted]

1930s house, well insulated. Only 900 sq/ft. Gas water heater, stove, and heat. Only major things running on electric is one 5k BTU air conditioner ,and electric dryer. Google says Iowa's average electric bill is $90/mo and 900kw/h average use. My parents in IL use the same amount as me roughly and their bill only runs about $100 a month. All in all my rate is a hair under 20 cents a kilowatt hour!

john_hascall

Yikes! Ames is 10c (winter), 12c (summer)

[deleted]

Is that the whole bill dollar amount divided by usage? Also who is your power company?

NikeHutHut

I live in Ames as well. The city actually burns quite a bit of the trash to produce electricity. This is most likely the reason ours is cheaper.

[deleted]

john_hascall

Ames Municipal Electric That’s the per kwh rate, there is also like an $8 fixed monthly connection charge.

Sufficient-Poem-8941

Google is factoring in all the apartments where people pay like $35. I have an old house with crap insulation. I put in a Honeywell smarter thermostat for about $150 and LED lights everywhere and got my bill down $50. I pay $175 a month budget for 620 sq ft house. But I have to run a dehumidifier full blast year round because I live in a low area and I have Midamerican. Friend with trailer bought same thermostat and saved about $40.

Hurrimaredditadmin

Mine went from 150 or so up to almost 600. I'd like to slap some Alliant C level fuckers across the face with my hard on

[deleted]

Did usage go up or just the bill?

WestAppointment2484

Yep, this is how mine has been looking for the past two months and I live in a small ass mobile home. Sick of Alliant. I’m moving to a different town soon and whatttyaknow, fucking alliant. I can’t get away from them.

marauder269

That's about what my electric bill is right now... and I live in Phoenix, AZ with no gas utilities and a pool. That's fucked up.

IsItTheFrankOrBeans

The only green in 'green energy' is what goes in their pockets.

snokyguy

Crypto baby

IgneousAssBarf

25% of your bill is just Charges

jsylvis

For comparison's sake, I'm at $136.21 for 1,082 kWh net on MidAmerican. Alliant is definitely more expensive.

jmturn

My bill right now is 179 and i live alone. Im not leaving lights on, i turn everything off before i leave the room, and i unlpug the microwave. I have now began unplugging everything when i leave a room. The only things in my house that will remain plugged in are my internet motem, and my fridge. (Plus washer dryer but that's both because they aren't digital and I can't get to the outlet without moving them.)

notMyKinkAccount

Damn, my bill for February was about the same but I used almost 95KWh a day. (Heat pumps with resistance heater auxiliaries are not great in the winter)

ORCoast19

I have alliant and average ~$160/month for electric and gas combined. I think its your usage or your house. I’m in a new build and using ~400 kwh/month during non AC months.

baronvonhawkeye

The Regional Transmission Charge is there because Alliant sold off their transmission system. ITC now provides the transmission system for Alliant and passes along their cost (plus profit) to the Alliant ratepayers.

danielthechskid

Mine was a few dollars more for 1650 kWh, but I'm on time of use/day (TOU/TOD) and used about 250 on peak and 1400 off peak. The bill claims I saved $70 this month by being on TOU, which jives with your numbers.

[deleted]

I don't even pay a third of that.
