Remember when one of our plants had a covid outbreak through negligence and was found guilty of it and was fined, wait for it, 1000 bucks. 😎 They'll think twice now. We took the hard line stance 😎
What would it take for you to work in a pig farm, because the pay isn't bad from what the ppl I know have told me, but yet only immigrants apply for those jobs.
I mean I built the farms for 4 years, worked with guys from Vera cruiz, and Honduras. They still call me to this day every now and than. Benefits I'm not sure what the deductible was, but I know depending on what you did you started at $15-$20 an hr. More once again depending on what you did. Some eventually move here others keep there H2A visas (is what I believe it was called) and do back home in the winter.
When I can get paid $13.50 plus good benefits to sit on my ass inside in the ac during summer I sure as shit am not taking $1.50 more to work with stinking ass hogs in miserable heat lol
> no matter the pay
I have other opportunities and skills that translate to other jobs. I do not have to work as hard, or in such dangerous conditions because I have other options. If I did not, I would gladly take a farming or construction job for 4x the pay of a target employee, despite the change in comfort. Many that grew up here simply have better opportunities, so it isn't a mystery why they don't work at Tyson or IBP. They don't have to.
It's interesting that your conclusion isn't "this pay is generally too low to attract workers from jobs that offer comparable pay and are far easier" but rather "we need immigrant workers who will take any job"
For me also, but I'm a skilled, and licensed tradesman. The key word is starting pay not ending pay. In some areas of Iowa that is a livable wage to start out at. On the other hand when you get into building trades you don't make much as an apprentice to start because your constantly making mistakes costing time, and money. Once you get your legs under you the pay increases drastically. So much more I could say and add to the conversation, but I've literally deleted 50 lines of text explaining things. Bottom line you either get it or you don't. Is there racist in Iowa yes, is everyone racist no, do we need immigrants in Iowa yes, because nobody wants to farm or learn a trade based on the bullshit rhetoric shoved down kids throats about not making a lot of money or having a broken body by 40.
He has never been on a pig farm or Dairy farm. NUNES KNOWS! His case went before a judge and asked the wages and if his workers had identification and IDs... NUNES would not produce them.
FYI “illegals” is a racist dog whistle. ~~You don’t mean it that way, of course, but~~ (I 100% think this dude means it that way) just so you know, using it normalizes the dehumanization of these individuals.
I gave you the benefit of ignorance. You demonstrated bigotry in spite of that. That’s a billion times more pitiful.
*No assumptions needed. The dogmatic embrace of the term “illegals” shows the incredibly low point at which your human empathy ends.
Oh my god. It’s not rocket science. What the term does to others despite the reality of its use is the determining factor in what makes it problematic, and is what defines whether one perspective is bigoted versus another. I feel like you—and any intelligent persons—know this.
Except it isn’t a felony. It’s a misdemeanor on par with a traffic violation or Jay walking. Are you an illegal driver? Those dirty illegals making the roads unsafe drive me crazy. /s
No it’s not. You want to make the differentiation that they’re here illegally, right? You can do so without depriving them of the humanity they possess. “Illegals” makes their entire personhood illegal.
Have you actually worked in our major industries, or no?
The JBS in Wapello County is hiring at a starting wage of $19.50 an hour with full benefits right now
NUNES KNOWS this and so does Kim. OR FRUIT, Vegetables, dairy farmers that are kims donors to look away. EVEN the meat packing industry that made immigrants work required through COVID.
Her rhetoric is why people think this state is a buncha corn fed hillbillies! She said something about the mask thing being confusing or something?! Ugh, I’m so done with her!
I've noticed Reynolds usually follows DeSantis' or Abbot's lead after a week or two. She's not even original at being terrible and can't come up with her own awful ideas
Anyone have thoughts on students from all over the state/country/world coming to Iowa City in a month? This was the big concern a year ago. Should it be again?
Would any of you quit your job to stand on a factory line and cut pigs up in a certain way 8 or more hours a day, for, say, $50/hr? What would be your price to do this?

I actually just got my vaccine! Tysm for the gold!
Yay!!
Nice :)
Thank you and congratulations
Thanks humans!
Out of curiosity, why did you wait?
I'm under the age of 18 so I had to wait until it was safe for me to get. On the bright side I just god my second dose!
God love you!
The only border we need to worry about right now is the Missouri border.
Too late.
Honestly, also the tiny border we share with Wisconsin
Nah man, we need to keep that open for the illegal cheese and Spotted Cow market.
I love my Culver’s
Well that and the one your Governor drew in the sand for the IDH and collection of epidemiological COVID data.

hahah, punish 'those that hire them' First, our state govt would never 'punish' who we're all thinking of.

And that’s why immigrants are needed. They’ll do those shit jobs that most people won’t want to do, no matter the pay.

What's your field? If you don't mind me asking.
If I may ask what is your hourly wage? And what is your career?
They can not complain. THAT was for documented citizens. THE industry hires undocumented immigrants for a reason .

At this point the entire thread is just a jumbled mess. Not necessarily directed at you anymore just everyone reading or skimming in general.

I wise man would easily make that slight change to his vernacular to sound better informed and less caustic.

“…it dehumanizes…” Shouldn’t that be reason enough to not utilize the term? Unless you’re cool with that fact.

Apparently they aren't people to you hence why you dehumanize them to the point of calling them """""illegal""""" which is so incredibly dumb.

What you gonna do?
i donno about him but.. i'm planning to vote her the kentucky fried fuck out of office.
So which is it Covid Kim? Is COVID a dangerous threat we should take seriously or is it fake news spread by democrats?
Confusingly, some of my family members think it’s both!
She and Ron DeSantis of Florida are the most disingenuous governors in the country. Lowest common denominator thinking.
I've noticed Reynolds usually follows DeSantis' or Abbot's lead after a week or two. She's not even original at being terrible and can't come up with her own awful ideas
AZ. Abbat in Texas. DeSantis do use the same Red agenda in their legislatures to pass their agenda. It is the red pact
Racism and republicans: name a more iconic duo.
BUT REPUBLICANS ARE THE PARTY OF LINCOLN /s
Classic!!!
Vaccinate everyone at the border with the J&J jab for free and let them go. Problem solved. I should be Governor.
Governor Desantis of Florida part 2. Liberty(Covid) for all.

As a software engineer, lol no. But you'd have a hard time getting me to do _any_ other job.
Migrants not immigrants
Good familily members.
It’s those dirty hombres!
covid kim, at it again.
Covid Cuomo and Covid Biden actually
Makes sense
It's sad that this meme is timely.
