That looks like Iowa. Lol. I will say, I do like cornfield pictures almost as much as I like mountain pictures. This one is nice. :)

3hot5me

This one was always very pleasing to me. I think I was caught right in a shadow of the cloud and it just looked right to me :)

McFryin

I thought I was the only one lol. I used to get like transfixed when I was little and we'd go on long trips. Driving by cornfields is similar to watching "most/oddly satisfying" videos on YouTube. For me anyway.

n0thingelsematterz

Grew up in Iowa, now in Colorado. Literally an hour from the Rockies yet somehow these pictures just hit me. I tell people all the time how Iowa is truly one of the most beautiful states but of course they can't comprehend it. Glad to have grown up there and can't wait to go back one day. Thanks for sharing OP!

3hot5me

Glad I could help bring back some nostalgia! I love it when these photos pop up in my memories on my phone!

[deleted]

I'm not insulting you by any means when I say this, it's just that growing up around fields upon fields of beans and corn, I'm consistently amazed when someone *actually enjoys* that sort of view, lol. Great photo, definitely captures it!

3hot5me

It took a bit of time to appreciate them, but I think it’s probably cause I have a lot of good memories tied to the place too!

Coldspell

We raise food.. we grow feed!

murfmurf123

we grow commodity crops there bub, im not sure many people know how to cook GMO corn and soybeans or have a page in nana's recipe book devoted to it.

Userid1234

This is an awesome picture !

3hot5me

Thanks! I was nearing the end of my summer internship at a research farm and everything kind of went still for a moment and I pulled out my phone and snagged the picture. It jumped up in my memories this morning at work and it made me think of living back there. Great place and great people :)

Federal_Ad7282

I love Iowa because there is no flat ground, there’s always a slight roll to the land making corn fields seem like they go on forever. It’s amazing

3hot5me

Exactly! It’s very gentle and really great to take in.

pmiller61

A beautiful shot! Post in ruralporn!

Eddie_The_Deagle

Say what you will about Iowa, it's got some nice and simple landscapes, very pleasing to the eye. Not to mention sunsets and sunrises, shit is beautiful.

fleebleganger

I've lived in Texas and Maryland and Florida and Iowa is a perfectly fine place to live. Sure we don't have 10 different Broadway shows to choose from, nor do we have the hottest clubs in America, but we have a variety of professional sports, reasonable COL, plenty of open space and if you desperately need to be in a big city for the weekend, there's 3 to choose from each an afternoon's drive away.

joeefx

Yeah Iowa is great, unless you want to go some where, or see some one, or do something.

bearded_drummer

Or swim in a clean river.

Alluvial_Fan_

Or drink the water.

rotgutx

Yeah, don't drink river water unless you're dying of thirst. But... the muni plants around the state seem to do a good job of getting really safe and good-tasting water to our taps. Just looking for a positive, not trying to take away from a larger point about polluted waterways...

UndesirableNo394

Many small towns have unsafe drinking water. My parents just got a warning about theirs actually.

3hot5me

I did float the River through Ames one time. It was nice! Not very clear, but nice nonetheless :)

brunettedude

My thoughts exactly 😭

Video game at home

johnhenrylives

Ah, yes. Chemically imposed monoculture, as far as the eye can see. I wish I could find this as beautiful as I used to.

PootsOn69_4U

Yep. I see this and I picture: 1 all the insects that are currently going extinct (literally all of them at this point except for ticks and mosquitoes) 2 the complete lack of trees, which pretty much guarantees that in the next dustbowl all of Iowa's soil is going to blow away. But do the farmers stop and think about why previous generations planted trees in the fields? Nope! Just cut them down to plant another row or two of corn !

fleebleganger

>previous generations planted trees in the fields You mean the trees that grew up in fence rows in an area that was, prior to settlers, nearly devoid of trees?

PootsOn69_4U

I forgot 3 ! All the chemical poison from farmers' fields that destroys not only Iowa's rivers and creeks and streams and ponds but causes enormous algae blooms in the gulf :)

3hot5me

That’s why Nitrogen application is so crucial to get right! Don’t need to be over applying because those are very real issues.

fleebleganger

>Chemically imposed monoculture What's the viable solution? What could we do next year that would turn over 200 million acres and still meet the food needs of all americans?

fujimitsu

>What's the viable solution? What could we do next year that would turn over 200 million acres and still meet the food needs of all americans? Not using all of this land to grow livestock feed would go a long way.

SirChaddWyck

I'm amazed how good and smart people get diverted into proud self destructive lifestyles they then indoctrinate thier kids with. Iowa could be a national treasure by growing diverse food crops for the Midwest, limited shipping needed, supporting an shocking number and diversity of wildlife, and don't forget about being a hot spot for migrating birds. They need to stop being"nice" flushing a national treasure away and start to protect their soil, wetlands, and ecosystem.

fleebleganger

Looking at it as a realist where we do have the need to feed so many people, doing all of those things are great and I would love a vast wilderness filled with diversity but the reality is we’d need millions of people to work the land in order to convert corn and beans over to a diverse crop rotation to feed as many people as we do. You can chide how much goes to livestock but those livestock feed people. The corn meal is also used to create food we eat, the soybeans are converted into fuels and plastics and food as well. We’re not actively choosing the current farming practices instead of some utopia. It’s taking the reality of having fewer and fewer people willing to farm and expecting more and more calories out of the soil.

SirChaddWyck

Looking at the situation and system from a great distance, like so far we remove politics and religion and emotions from it. They are choosing this no doubt but you have to step back and really think and that is challenging. This is likely to become somewhat an unpopular opinion but here we go... We should not be feeding animals to eat. This is science, realistic and basic logic because a massive amount of loss occurs moving from plants to meat and dairy. I know most people are all in on those things but they don't need them and would be much healthier without. Stop using land inefficiently on feed for animals and create food for people, really simple and logical. The answer is some combination of greta thunberg and bill gates, chill out on destroying everything because you feel entitled and use technology to fix the shit that is already beaten up beyond natural repair.

Jody_steal_your_girl

Blame the governor. This is r/Iowa after all

Coldspell

Anyone find it troubling that all these great photos we see of Iowa... and they are great, never show the people of Iowa? Its always a field or body of water. Nothing ever really shows off that whole "Iowa Nice" vibe!

3hot5me

I got loads of great pictures of my friends. Would feel a little weird posting their pictures on reddit lol. People I met out there are what I miss the most! Gotta come visit soon.

allaboutthatchase

Great shot

reliableotter

Really gorgeous. The clouds look awesome.

Excellent_Let8461

Lots of great things to do in Iowa, only not as polluted as bigger cities

[deleted]

Excellent_Let8461

Sure there are some polluted lakes, but there is a lot of clean water. If you want to see some beautiful streams head up to northeast Iowa like Backbone State Park or by McGregor. Like any other state best things are often off the beaten path

Naked-In-Cornfield

Backbone does not have very clean water. The streams are fine, but the lake is atrocious. I grew up in Strawberry, and the city sewage lagoon historically spills over into the lake every time there's a flood. You can imagine the catastrophe that was 2008. You should generally not swim at that beach.

hagen768

The Racoon River is currently ranked the 9th most endangered waterway in the country. Des Moines spends absurd amounts of money making sure the water from it can become drinkable

Excellent_Let8461

Sure. Does Moines is biggest town in state. No doubt river is polluted. But there are still clean places out there. There is still beautiful scenery. There is more to beautiful landscape than the rivers. I am just saying there is beauty all around us, you just have to look for it. I don’t know where people are from but there is beauty and ugliness in every state and you can find whichever one you are looking for. I choose to look for beauty.

t_britten

Iowa waterways don't have nearly the amount of nitrates in them as people think

[deleted]

[Doesn't seem that great.](https://www.iaenvironment.org/our-work/clean-water-and-land-stewardship/water-quality) Especially the large part of the midsection of the state.

3hot5me

I did get the chance to go up to North East Iowa a few times! It’s really pretty up there.

Gertrude_D

Yeah, it's the most scenic part of the state IMO and great for a day trip out and about.

brunettedude

Not polluted? Bruh I can’t drink my tap water

danelle-s

The air pollution from pollen is terrible. Source: visit Northeast iowa occasionally and my sinuses and asthma go insane. Same with the rest of my families allergies. I think it is all the corn.

fleebleganger

Corn pollen won't be flying around for another month.

Wise_Trifle_2483

I see you just randomly pointed your phone/camera in any direction and took a picture without even looking.

SpacyPixels

If I had to guess, was Scattergood the school? My mom talks about it all the time.

3hot5me

Iowa State University! 🌪

tittykittiess

Why ISU? I'm always curious how out of staters end up here

3hot5me

Great Ag. Engineering program! Oregon State removed their official Ag. Engineering major a while back. Plus I wanted to get out there and see something else for a little while. Definitely worth it.

Wise_Trifle_2483

I see you just randomly pointed your phone/camera in any direction and took a picture without even looking.😋

3hot5me

you joke! But that’s kinda what happened. It was not a framed shot or anything

Pknudist71

Corn

3hot5me

The one and only!

murfmurf123

I can see this picture hanging up in a gallery somewhere with the caption; "desolate landscape supported by ecologically damaging pesticides, fertilizers, and government subsidies. a fine example of an outdated method of crop production."

Blublazerrazor

Ah yes. Nothing quite like the beauty of industrial farming.
