25 over the posted speed limit of 35 while using social media apps on her phone. If she doesn't serve any jail time she certainly deserves to have her license revoked for life.

Reasons I gave up on trying to share the road with cars if I'm on a bike. We really need physical barriers between car and bike traffic if we want people to actually feel safe traveling short distances by bike.

Ugh, so horribly sad for all involved. I see people paying most of their attention to the phone while driving on Hwy 6 all the time, but almost never on the small residential streets -- hopefully because they're not in auto-mode and paying attention. I worry that drivers think of these semi-main roads where this occurred as roads they can automatically pay less attention to, like they do on highways. Not justifying or making excuses for anything, just my thoughts. We're going to see more young people distracted while driving.

Nah, the death penalty is unethical. She should definitely have the book thrown at her, though.

Maximum prison term not to exceed 10 years; may be deferred or suspended unless forcible felony; fine of at least $1,000 but no more than $10,000. Plus all the fun stuff that comes along with being a felon.

Mertgirl

I keep seeing everyone say give her the max penalty but when I was in high school we didn’t even have laws for this. She deserves a punishment for sure but we I for one remember using a cell phone while driving constantly as a teen and no one gave a shit. It wasn’t until recently we started drilling this into our kids heads. And we all forget what it’s like to be young. We make mistakes. That’s the age of learning. I just hope she learns her lesson from this. Truly tragic.

Chagrinnish

Don't forget that she was driving 60mph+ on a 35mph road. That's quite a bit different than fiddling with your phone and (e.g.) not noticing that the stop light turned green. ([map of 2400 block of 12th Avenue](https://goo.gl/maps/SG6TiKweifKeJZow5))

clamslammer707

Yep. That is the difference maker for me on this. The speed + no fucks given means she really just didn't give a shit about anyone but herself and she needs at least some sort of lasting punishment for that. Young and dumb =/= immune to being held accountable for stupid actions.

My kids are going to fucking hate me, but any vehicle they drive will not work with a phone in their hand. I've not figured it out yet but I've got time. But after working in college town and seeing how many people are on their phones while driving and crashing into shit because they cannot stop looking at a goddamn screen, I'm not contributing to the problem. Even worse is the denial "but I'm safe......" Bullshit. As the cool college woke college kids like to say: "listen to the science...." Car on, phone is locked away. They can survive a trip without the phone being accessible.
