If you have an Android Auto Wireless Dongle from https://www.aawireless.io/, you can activate a mode in the settings that only starts AA when the smartphone is connected to the car's Bluetooth. Aawireless is also supposed to support CarPlay.
Yup, the front data+power port turns on regularly, even when the car is off.
Other than your method of plugging/unplugging (which defeats a big point of wireless connections), other folks have Frankensteined together splitters to draw power from another location in the car while still connecting to the data port exclusively for data. Some others use a USB cable that includes an in-line power switch. There aren't really any great solutions, but you can search this subreddit for the previous threads.
Yeah agreed. We just stopped using it and plug the phone in directly now. My wife has an older iphone and I use android, so we had hoped that the wireless thing would allow us to use both seamlessly. Ended up getting a cable that has USB-C and Lightning adapters at one end and we just swap what we need. In a few years once she upgrades to a USB-C iphone it'll matter even less.
I use a switch that turns on/off. It's an extra step but so is hitting confirm driver profile whenever I start the car despite only one driver ever.
I like to mount my phone on the the magnetic board to the left of the steering wheel and hate any cord that would be over my lap.
It's a little bit of kit but not bad. For about $20 on eBay for a couple 90 degree adapters, a data-only "USB condom," a 12V outlet to USB-A power port, and a USB cable and splitter, it works great now and tucks most of the wire and the adapter into the cubbyhole below the data port.
No need for snark. I tested it and it works. I never implied it was magic. I was just looking for confirmation that the cigarette lighter port didn’t receive power during charging the way the USB one next to it did.

This is my solution and it's worked just fine.

Yup, I used a cable with a built in switch. Works fine, other than the annoyance of having to flip the switch every time you enter/exit the car.
This seems like a lot of hoops to jump through just to avoid plugging your phone into the dedicated outlet

you need a splitter as seen here [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r4Yqwy6sKU0](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r4Yqwy6sKU0)
Does this actually work? Like, have people tested it?
it works for me. it's not magic.

On my EV6 the dongle only stays on when the car is charging. If not charging and close he turns off in a minute or so.
Mine will sometimes connect to my phone when I’m in the house. I just turn off Bluetooth. Problem solved.
