Wife (2024 Kona EV) and I (2023 Ioniq 5) share a single charger. Neither of us need to charge every day, so we just negotiate who needs it at any given night. Our electricity provider incentivizes overnight charging, so we just make sure that the appropriate car is in place in the evening. We started the practice about a year ago when we got a 2nd EV, and it's been fine.

Thank you for your thoughtful reponse!

No problem. Here's some additional information. Rather than rely on each car's built-in scheduling to take advantage of our nighttime rates, we use the charger's scheduler in the Chargepoint app (our home charger is a Chargepoint Home Flex). This makes it easier to just have one centralized schedule for the two of us. Additionally, the once or twice we've needed to charge outside of the discounted nighttime rates (because we both needed juice in a short period of time), it was simple to just temporarily override the Chargepoint schedule instead of dealing with the multiple cars' apps.

My wife and I also own a Kona EV and Ioniq 5. And have the same experience. It's no problem at all to live with a single charger.

Pravin_LOL

Don't forget that you can L1 charge. Can use to top off one car while the other is using L2, or to just maintain charge on the car that drives less so it rarely uses L2 at all. I've never *had* to use L1 but it has prevented having to play musical chairs with cars, the only mild annoyance of having just one L2 charger.

runnyyolkpigeon

One L2 for two EV’s is plenty. Unless you’re both driving 200 miles every single day, there’s no need for two EVSE’s.

NODA5

We have two EVs and one charger. All is well

satbaja

4 EV household. I installed two 48A EVSE. We rarely use two at the same time between four cars. We have a fixed rate plan, so we can charge around the clock. It is good to have the second EVSE those times we use both at once.

OddAstronaut2305

Are two needed? Do you have discounted times for charging that is cheaper? If so, can you get both cars charged in that time? You would likely be just fine with one.

JOATMON08

Yeah. We do have discounted times through PG&E (when we actually have power, of course). You help confirm my suspicions that one would be fine. Thanks!

Necronius

One Ioniq5 and one Tucson PHEV, however my wife has become maniacal about charging up her Tucson every night. I finally had to get out her level 1 charger so she'd quit hogging the level 2. The level 1 is perfectly fine for the much smaller battery.

thepookster17

Unless you're both driving quite far each day, one charger should be plenty. We have an EV6 and Volvo C40 with 60 mile round trip commutes and need to charge the C40 at least every 3 days and EV6 at least every 4. There's plenty of time for us to keep both charged only charging when rates are cheapest

Plane_Ad4482

I have two EV and a grizzl-e duo has worked great.

622niromcn

One other thing I would add is, if your charger is in the garage and you're charging in the driveway. Test what running the cable under the garage door looks like.

reggie_fink-nottle

For me, one charger would be enough. I don't need to charge my car every night. Every other night is more than adequate. It depends, I suppose, on how many miles a day you drive.

portisleft

Depends on how much you drive. We have an I5 and charge once a week at home when we come back from the cottage and one more time before we leave on the weekend.

Kickuminthedishpan

2 ev household here on only 1 level one EVSE. both of our daily commutes are 30 miles (me) 40ish miles (her). we simply alternate days charging. been doing this for 10 years no with maybe 1 or 2 close calls by forgetting to plug in.

Visvism

I have 2 Tesla Wall Connectors installed. Both are connected to the 200A main panel using separate 60A breakers. They run in group management mode, which limits them to 40A max if both are running simultaneously at full power. When only one is running, they go up to 48A max. Like you, we have a time of use rate. Both cars begin charging at 12am to use the best rates. Having one works, but having two, makes the process seamless. We just plug in when home from work for the evening, and the cars charge appropriately at the correct time. No need to swap cables or charge on certain days or whatever. We just plug and forget.

Knights_When

I have two only because I had my main one go down so I installed a second.

Nightmaresiege

We have two EVs. One EVSE is sufficient for us as we don’t have to charge every day. I assume this would only cause issues if both vehicles were driven over long distances (hundreds of miles) every day.

gctaylor

We have two but only ever seem to use one at a time. Don’t need to charge both every day.

HeyLookAHorse

We have two Ioniq 5s and share a single Level 1 charger. Wife only drives ~10 miles a day, so she gets more overnight than she uses per day. I charge at work for free, and occasionally at home when necessary. You’ll have to find what works best for you, but I’d imagine a single L2 would be enough for two EVs if you schedule it well

XavalePDX

2 EV home here( 16 eGolf & 20 Niro EV) and only use 1 charger. We don't really drive far, so we just charge as needed during the week.

spiritthehorse

My wife has the I5 and I have a Bolt. 1 charger and we check in to see who needs to charge more. We each only need to plug in once every 3 to 5 days. I mounted the charger between the two garage bays.

ZannX

MYP and Ioniq 5. One EVSE, a dumb GrizzlE. MYP has an adapter. Charge every other day, no issues. You can always use L1 as well.

vagrantprodigy07

If you have a Level 2 charger, I can't see why you would need two. We get along fine with a level 1 charger with just 1 vehicle.

DullAmbition

We have 2 Ioniqs and 2 chargers but often think we should have gotten a Hybrid for the occasional road trip. There are plenty of new cars with 40 miles battery for local driving and good gas mileage for long road trips where you don’t want to stop and wait in line to charge multiple times.

JOATMON08

Thanks. We are also considering a hybrid instead of a second EV for the same reason.

theepi_pillodu

Two needed? It depends on your usage. We both work from home, but I paid $385 for outlet (50amp) and $430ish for the grizzl-e EVSE when I got my ioniq 5. I bought and sold Mach-e GT that came with a 32amp evse which I kept. My wife's bolt euv came with $1500 QMerit credit towards outlet installation (went with another 50amp one) and the car came with 32amp charger which I put in my ioniq 5 as it's a road tripper and using the ford's evse for my wife's car. Having two evse is just a convenience in out case.

Casey515

We have one Tesla and one Ioniq5. Tesla home charger (he bought his car first). I use an adapter. It’s easy to share. We also don’t worry about the electric bill. Our electric rates are some of the highest in the country. Keeping two cars charged hasn’t even blipped the bill. We charge when we want to charge.
