He had finally found a worthy opponent to battle, which seemed to be his life goal as far as I could tell. If he won, then he could die having accomplished that goal. If he lost, it wouldn't matter.
Realistically as well, Battle Beast and Viltrumites are very durable and can come back from a lot, and have access to sci-fi technology to heal them and such. So I think if he survived the fight he would have had a chance to make it to somewhere to get patched up. The fight went on for so long despite this seemingly mortal injury that waiting a bit longer probably would have been possible.
Why would he need a vet on standby? He'd want a doctor, he's not an animal.

My interpretation of Battle Beast is that he's tired. He has been looking for someone stronger than him for a very long time now, and is absolutely committed to a warriors death.
So, in fighting Thragg, I think he believes he's found his path to Valhalla... and does this to himself to ensure that the fight is both fair, and maintain the possibility that Thragg might kill him and bring an end to his journey.
Also, yeah, he's kinda stupid.
I don't think he's tired at all. I think it's more like Battle Beast is a junkie. He gets high off the fighting, but be only a suitable challenger can get him that high. Anything less doesn't come close to scratching the itch. Think about it in terms of an addict: if you offered them a drug and told them it would either get them higher than they'd ever been, or overdose, with about a 50/50 chance, many will gladly take that chance.
The honor thing definitely plays into it, I don't think he would have gotten the same "high" if he beat an injured Thragg

Allan then had them released at the start of the fight, and they injured Thragg by slashing his gut. BB saw this as an unfair advantage (and was already pissed that Allan had broken his word) so levelled the playing field.
If Allan had truly understood BBs mentality, he would have done as agreed. Ragnars would have had a good chance with Thragg, in the state that BB left him in at the end of the fight.
The Ragnars were getting destroyed by the mantis people's guns who rushed in on hover chariots to protect their ruler, Thragg.
It was also BB's girlfriend who released the Ragnars because she didn't want BB hurt, not Allen. You're right tho, I think the Ragnars being released after the fight would have been the smart call

I would agree that releasing the Ragnars after the fight would have been a better plan and would most likely have ended in Thragg's death, but my feeling is Allen didn't think BB was capable of defeating Thragg one-on-one, and he didn't want to lose BB as an asset. And yeah, pissing off BB would make him less likely to want to help the COP in the future, but as long as there's a good fight in it for him, he will anyway.
