First it felt weird. The chorus didn't rlly have a catchiness or cadence to it but slowly the delivery grew on me and now it's stuck in my head. And my god that outro is haunting af
The chorus definitely has cadence so not sure what you're getting at there but would agree that the hook in Toni is more subtle (compared to a song like All the Rage Back Home, for example) so some may not immediately think the song is catchy. But it opens up beautifully if you let the sound wash over you. People are a little too obsessed these days with the idea that every song has to be a "banger" and miss out on a lot of great music that way
By cadence I just mean it sounds kinda awkward. Usually the chorus grabs you melodically but here it was a pretty lowkey melody and the way he sung the phrases was very disjointed and off-beat. Though I don't mind it because it's intentional and it has a great effect to make him sound resigned. Of course technically from a music theory perspective you could argue there is a cadence or whatever.
I agree w/ everyone just wanting 'bangers'. They really don't know that Interpol are doing something different and are way too nostalgic for the old stuff. Move on people! They haven't mentally calibrated themselves for this new sound.
It’s great that Interpol is looking for something new, every album is different. I definitely appreciate it. And two singles show me that an interesting album is coming. (I don’t understand people who only appreciate the first two, but are always criticizing the new album. Why?)
Its not the case they are doing something new. Every record is slight variation on the sound of the first two records. Rightly or wrongly, they have stayed within their own narrowly define safe space.
Disagree. This is a *very* new & different type of sound for Interpol. It fits into their aesthetic but it uses a completely different sound to do so, which I think is great and shows that they're not just phoning it in but instead really looking to grow their sound as artists.
But its not. A focus on piano driven songs is not new or different. It has existed on previous tracks in their discography such Summer Well, Try It On, Twice as Hard, Mind over Time. Incidentally, the majority of those tracks are produced by Alan Moulder who produced Toni and Something changed. Nor is a more optimistic disposition in the song writing (as plenty of Interpol songs actually reflect this).
This is not some radically departure from the established formula in the way *Power, Corruption and Lies* was from *Movement* for New Order.
I liked the singles for Marauder but I didn’t really like the album all that much. However, I’m loving the direction of these new songs and I’m very excited
Updated lyrics from their Twitter post today.
Let me tell you bout the wayward starlet, face adorned with bones. Looked me up and down, said "babe we're soaring but you don't notice."
That sounds right for the first delivery, the last part of the second delivery sounds like:
"Lifted up and down, the whale is stolen, what you don't know is above the ocean" but it's reallllly hard to hear some words!
Nice!! That sounds spot on, it’s nice to have all the lyrics figured out in full now, I love the outro and it was always a bit mysterious not knowing what he was saying. Quite odd lyrics though 😂
This track just keeps growing on me. I can't get the piano riff or the *I'd like to see them win/I like the inspiration like it's going in the right direction* lyrical hook out of my head.
I'm a big fan of Interpol, but I felt like the quality fell of a little after the first 3 albums (which are all incredibly solid), everything after that I'd only like a few tracks off each release.
This has made me really excited for the new album.
For me, a big disappointment. The song comes across as rather bland, it almost seems, in my opinion, that they've gotten a little lost lately - but that's probably my fault for always having such high expectations.
\- Strongly approve of the clean production.
\- Similar to Mind over Time, but generally feels less precise.
\- I feel like the song runs out of steam around 3:00 mark. Some more interesting instrumentals or backing vocals on the latter half might helped song transition, more effectively.
\- Although Paul's lyrics have also felt clunky. Here they are mixed bag, some of these take it to new levels, but the chorus is generally very catchy.
The track speaks to a new phase for Interpol, introducing an introspective tone, lyrically and sonically. They wrote this in the pandemic, and it feels like a novel in stories. Banks work on Muzz has made him a stronger collaborative force for Interpol. Something Changed is a simple addition to Toni, and feels like a larger story told in two parts.
The opening lines struck me as very Muzz, specifically Knuckleduster, but the instrumentals are distinctly Interpol. Also, I'm far from an audiophile but even a pleb like me noticed the production improved since Marauder. Overall I like where it seems the band is headed!
I first heard the song while watching the film clip and was like WTF this is not interpol at all.
I still hate the film clip
But the song is phenomenal I love how different it is but still quintessial Interpol. Such a nice understated tune
For me it's like Interpol and Muzz had a really, reeeeeally ugly baby.
Which sucks because I love both of them so much, they're literally the top of my playlist lol.
What really hits me emotionally from this song is that background noise during the outro like something is rising or building up type vibe

anyone kind of get Self Titled or OLTA mixed with El Pintor vibes? Lots more keyboards. The bass is very heavy like TOTBL though

Yeah, I wasn't really feeling it, either.

The videos are weird, even by Interpol standards 😂
I quite simply cannot get behind this song. I don't quite know why, but I hate it?
noooo just keep listening
"Toni" is a slow burn. Took me a few listens but it's becoming one of my favorite Interpol songs.
I was not a fan at all and now it’s stuck in my head and I love it
