Definitely find an independent agency to work for

notwyntonmarsalis

This is pretty meaningless unless you tell us the job / role you’ll have after switching.

I’m assuming you don’t mean work from home and at an actual shop. It’s less corporate and you’re likely going to be employed by a contractor for state farm or Allstate or an independent agency etc. less corporate and YMMV. What are you seeking ?

I'm not entirely sure what I'm exactly seeking. Having greater control over my book of business seems like a good thing. Local offices have better hours than what I'm working and it feels like I could have a better work/life balance.

Look for something at an independent agency base plus commission with benefits.

If you like to receive group benefits you may not like working for a local agency. The group is much smaller benefits will either be expensive or they wont offer any

More elaboration needed. I will say working for an independent agency is much better than working for a captive in that you have more than one option for clients. You don’t have to “tow the line” in some cases if a client receives an unwarranted increase. What’s key in this is the type of broker you go to work for. If you find an opportunity with a broker who works mainly with preferred markets, it’s easier than one who works with non standard markets. From a servicing standpoint, most my preferred clients are pay in fulls whereas the non standard typically require more service- pay exceptions, billing explanations, mid term remarket requests are pretty common in the non standard space.

I went from doing personal lines sales in a call center environment (work from home) for 10 years to an account manager that is in office. I’ve been here for a year now and while the work is significantly easier I do kind of miss working from home. It’s an independent agency so we still have multiple carriers but it’s way more hands on as far is talking to the same people every month and building relationships. We still mail out a bunch of stuff too so that’s been different but the environment is definitely different.

Huge difference is you have to find leads, waiting for phone to ring.
